In mythology Fate is often represented as three women who spin the thread of life, measure it, and then cut it at the time of death. This podcast is an overview of the subject, looking at the relationship between fate and free will, the function of time and reason with regard to fate, and specific mythologies of Fate including the Greek Moirai, the Keres (Spirits of Doom and Violent Death) and the Nordic Norns.

"Hi, this is Nigel, the showrunner and lead writer for Among the Stacks. Among the Stacks is a podcast set in an infinite library outside of time and space, which contains every version of every story from every universe; and it follows the Head Librarian, S., who, all of a sudden, one day wakes up and all of their colleagues have disappeared, and so they have to delve deep into the secrets of this infinite library to try and find out where they've gone. What you're about to hear is one of our pre-season episodes, a prelude called 'You know they're playing it somewhere, but you have to find it', which we're really proud of. We think it's probably one of our strongest episodes, the sound design and the acting in it is just fantastic. We wanted to try and do a story where something was hunting was hunting two people, but you couldn't see them, they were only being told it by a mysterious voice on a radio. Going into it, just be warned, there are content warnings for Conflict, Disagreement Between People, Threat (both real and implied), Being Hunted, sound effects of Glass Shattering, Screaming, Being Isolated, Distress Calls, Vocal Distortion, Static, Repetition, Fear of Death, Character Death, Descriptions of Harm, Animal Cruelty mentions, and Gore sound effects. We really hope that you enjoy this. I don't know what else everyone else is saying, but we just hope you enjoy it. We hope that this gives you a taste of what Among the Stacks is, and that you like that taste. Thank you very much, on with the show!" cw: "Vocal Distortion, Conflict, Disagreement between People in a Relationship, Threat (Implied and Depicted), Loss of Bodily Autonomy (Implied), Being Hunted, Isolation, Glass Shattering (SFX), Screaming, Distress Calls, Static, Repetition, Death, Existentialism, Threat, Character Death, Descriptions of Harm, Gore (SFX), Animal Cruelty (Mention and Depiction), Missing Children, Loss of a Child, Parental Neglect, Profanity, Book Burning (Mention), Memory Loss, Destruction, Falling, Existential Dread, Unreality, Cults, Chanting, Alcohol Use, Drug Use (Implied), Fighting, Monsters, Gun (Mention), Knife (Mention), Being Held Against One's Will, Loss of a Loved One, Animal Death, Torture (Implied), Discussion of Violent Death" Transcript can be found at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cRyEbT8PnxIdsdSQYDzyvVMVBUYnc76xlSEG16nxVI8/edit?usp=sharing https://www.amongthestackspodcast.com Socials: https://www.tumblr.com/amongthestackspodcast
The wind was not at the back of our next guest. Ever. She never knew her biological father. She grew up trapped in abuse and poverty. Her large family lived in a hot, isolated stretch of California dotted with Joshua trees, few people, and even fewer opportunities. When her mother was bedridden with cancer she became her caregiver, all the while working to support the family and caring for her younger siblings. By age 20 she was orphaned. Rather than sink in self-pity she (and her new husband) adopted her younger siblings. The marriage didn't last, but her devotion to her family did. Her younger sister/daughter Aryanna was never able to rise above her harsh beginnings and turned to unhealthy behaviors early in life to cope. Sadly, that eventually led to her violent death by a homeless man inside a deserted mobile home in San Diego. She was only 28. While Aryanna perished, her son did not and our guest is now raising him. Our speaker's compassion, determination, and sorrow come through as she tells us of the loss of her much-loved and much-missed sister, Aryanna. Please join Alexa Hansen as she shares the story of the homicide of Aryanna who was burned alive.https://www.jancantyphd.com

Acts 12:20-23 Now Herod had been very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; but they came to him with one accord, and having made Blastus the king's personal aide their friend, they asked for peace, because their country was supplied with food by the king's country. 21 So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. 22 And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died.- More than 2,000 years after Herod the Great succumbed at age 69, doctors have now settled on exactly what killed the king of ancient Judea: chronic kidney disease complicated by a very uncomfortable case of maggot-infested gangrene of the genitals.- Herod Agrippa I is the grandson of Herod the Great and king over almost all his territory with the exception of Decapolis.- God swiftly brings King Herod low, striking him with an angel, and publicly destroying him for not giving the proper honor to God. God sees all that we do, even perceiving to the depths of our thoughts, intentions, emotions, and heartsHerod was a bad manWe are first introduced to the man known as King Herod at the beginning of Acts 12, where he makes great persecution against the church and against her leaders.Acts 12:1 King Herod “laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church”Acts 12:2-3 he killed James the brother of John with the sword…[and] proceeded to arrest Peter also- Herod is ultimately a slave to the fear of man; his track record has proven that he was selfishly sadistic.- He persecutes the church to ultimately please the Jews and bring glory and praise to himself.- King Herod retreats to Caesarea in Acts 12:19, but not after putting his guards to death after allowing Peter's escape.Acts 12:22 the people were shouting, ‘The voice of a god, and not of a man!'Pride- How many of us on a daily basis succumb and give into pride and self-exaltation?- If it were not for God's grace and mercy in Christ, many of us would look just like Herod.- We must repent of our pride and fear of man and turn to Christ that we may have life.Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.Pride in the context of this verses refers to an arrogant attitude that manifests itself as independence from God and contrasts strikingly with humility. The proud person pursues his or her own way, but the humble one obeys God's Word. Delighting in the Lord and humbly following His commands makes us sure-footed so that we will not slip or staggerPsalm 37:23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; This is a public episode. A Violent Death, Not SuicideA 2019 coroner's report on the death of a 27-year-old Inuit woman determined “This is a violent death”, not suicide as initially ruled by the Montreal Police, the SPVM.Siasi Tullaugak was found hanging from the small balcony of a Chomedey Street apartment on August 29, 2017. Within 24 hours, another Inuit woman, Sharon Baron's body was found hanged in a closet inside her apartment in Dorval. In both cases the Montreal police considered the deaths of the two Inuit women as suicides. People who knew the two women said they suspected foul play, but when they tried to communicate this to the police their information was brushed aside. In the case of Baron, the Quebec coroner eventually ruled her death a suicide. In a March 2018 report, Dr. Louis Normandin wrote that Sharon Baron hung herself with a computer power cable, concluding that she died of compression asphyxiation of the neck structures following the hanging, finally determining, “It is a suicide.”Tullaugak's coroner's report was filed over 14 months later, even though both victims died within 24 hours of each other. In May 2019 coroner Karine Spenard wrote, “Siasi Ikidluak Tullaugak died of suffocation by hanging”, then concluded “This is a violent death.” The report goes on to say that it is not the role of the coroner to pronounce the civil or criminal person responsible in such matters, and, as this is “still an open file at the SPVM”, the analysis of the event remains open.In 2017, the Montreal police's Aboriginal liaison officer, Carlo De Angelis insisted police had thoroughly investigated the cases, “… investigators have done the legwork on this. They've looked at all the information that was gathered.”Both Tullaugak and Baron were known to frequent the Cabot Square district on the edge of Montreal's west end. The park is well known for drugs and sex trafficking. On March 26, 2019, another Inuit woman, Donna Pare was reported missing. Pare was known to frequent Place Emilie Gamelin, another area known for drugs and prostitution. She has not been seen since December 2018.The SPVM's media relations division declined to comment on the matter, instructing that all questions be put to the police force through an access to information request. For more information visit the website: https://theresaallore.com/2021/07/24/cops-dont-know-shit-theyre-just-frontin-siasi-tullaugak-wkt5-11/

In episode Twenty of Frontier War Stories Boe yarns Libby Connors author of Warrior: A Legendary Leader's Dramatic Life and Violent Death on the Colonial Frontier. Billy Barlow Gubbi Gubbi headman and resistance leader, was born in the 1820s, the decade when British officials authorised the invasion and occupation of what would become the city of Brisbane. At some point during the 1840s Billy Barlow had joined Dundalli and the Aboriginal men of Bribie Island in their fight against the European invaders. Bribie Islanders were at the centre of the Aboriginal resistance around Brisbane from 1843 until at least 1859. Their success in removing white settlers, missionaries, timber rafters, and cattlemen from their country was remarkable. The markings on a spear found in the plundered hut were identified by police as belonging to Barlow and a warrant was issued for his arrest in August 1852. The reward notice described him as ‘a good looking man' (NSW Government Gazette 1852, 1248) with a long nose and a missing front tooth. Most of the description above found on Indigenous Australia website which is hosted by the National Centre of Biography at the Australian National University. Episode thirteen of Frontier War Stories is broken up into two parts, this is Part 1 of Dundalli Day. In Part 1 Boe yarns with Libby Connors about the 5th of January 1855 the day Dundalli was was hung at a site which is now The Brisbane GPO on Queen Street. Libby Connors is Associate Professor of History at the University of Southern Queensland. In 2015 Connors received the Queensland Premier's Award for a work of State Significance for Warrior: A Legendary Leader's Dramatic Life and Violent Death on the Colonial Frontier.
