Mallory Hacker is an Assistant Professor for Neurology in the team of David Charles, who is Professor of Neurology, Vice-Chair for Business Development and Strategy, as well as the Medical Director for Telehealth at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2006, after a stay at Alim Louis Benabids team in Grenoble, France, David started to investigate the question of whether subthalamic DBS could lead to slowing of motor progression in patients with early stages of Parkinson's Disease. In a one-of-a kind trial, he collected data on the first patients which were published in 2014.In subsequent follow up trials, many of which were first-authored by Mallory Hacker, Class II evidence that supports this hypothesis could be established. It was a great joy to host Mallory in my lab in Berlin in 2022 and we have looked at the effects of lead locations on patients enrolled in the pilot trial. This is what convinced me that there might be something: The few patients that did not progress at all in their motor symptoms after two years were all precisely stimulated at the optimal location within the STN, while the ones that did progress, were more off target. Indeed, these same optimally placed patients had lower stimulation amplitudes and received less medication – but still had a clearly better outcome. Since the original trial, David and Mallory have been hard at work in trying to secure funding for a phase III pivotal trial, and we discuss how difficult this process has been, but also, that there is hope on the horizon, regarding the next steps!

When asked about the greatest challenges of scaling his business, David Charles echoes what we frequently hear from successful entrepreneurs: The biggest lesson is their own personal growth. In Part II of this conversation with David, we get to hear about how he launched his brand and what it took to get started. Currently, he serves as the Co-Founder, CEO, and COO of MOOD, a surging e-commerce dispensary that produces legal, high-quality THC products tailored to set your mood. Mood only sources their plants from small family-owned cannabis farms. Their product is a cannabinoid that still provides mood altering properties without giving its user a feeling of being overwhelmed. It's cannabis and technically not marijuana. And customers are raving. Today's episode centers around David's journey since he founded Mood, and we have so much to learn from him. The biggest journey of entrepreneurship is a personal one It's no secret that Mood is a massive success. In their 1+ year in business, they have already upgraded their 5,000 square foot warehouse to a 30,000 square foot warehouse to accommodate their needs. Mood hit a million dollars in just their second year in business, shocking David and Jake and exciting them about their prospects for the future. But the biggest growth journey of all? It's personal. David admits that while he had launched many businesses, none have been as successful as Mood - leaving him feeling green and excited to learn as a leader. He grows each day into the role of CEO, COO, and Co-founder, with an understanding that entrepreneurship is never perfect. For David, it's about evolution. Divide and conquer One of the most major pieces of advice David dispenses to other entrepreneurs is: divide and conquer. While people question him for dividing labor in his company, David stands by it. He hired a warehouse specialist and speaks highly of her work helping them scale the business. He also hired a client relationship specialist to interact with farmers across the United States who is experienced in the industry. Even the Co-founders enjoy a division of labor that makes sense for their respective skills. When others question his hands-off approach to leadership, David laughs. He's here to encourage, foster growth, and give his staff the tools they need - not to control their every move. Much of their success can be attributed to this divide and conquer strategy of growth. Next steps: scale and sell For some people, success means doing the same thing for their entire career. But not for David Charles. As an experiential entrepreneur, he knows that he doesn't want to stay in one place for too long. He takes the lessons he learns and avoids stagnation by trying something new. Now, he dreams of scaling the company even further and selling it to a worthy successor. He strives to set goals that will ensure the company's success - long after his nomadic lifestyle takes him in a new, exciting direction. Enjoy Part II of this conversation with the unstoppable David Charles… Quotes “Financially, I was in no place to fund an inventory-focused business with a warehouse and tons of equipment. His approach was, you do most of the work. He told me to do the marketing and he would be an investor. But then Jake went from being an investor to being in the trenches as voraciously as any Co-founder I've ever seen.” “The industry is dominated by con artists and low quality operators. The industry as a whole is just not very professional. But it was really important to us that this time, we were going to deliver the best quality product for our customers.” “We did a million our second month. Who wouldn't get psyched about that?” “We work with 30 to 35 small organic farms across the USA.” “There are a lot of people who are aware of the immense benefits of THC, and they just don't know where to get it. But now they can access this product legally and safely.” “We're shooting a documentary about each and every one of the farms we work with. We want to tell that seed to shelf story!” “There are ways to be compliant and lawful, while giving people the kind of experience they desire.” “We'd like to fundamentally quadruple the size of the company. We've nailed it, now it's time to scale. It. Then we'd like to exit the company when we've taken it as far as we can take it.” “I'd like to get involved with charity. I'll be able to make a difference in any way we want. I'd love to help animals, and I'd love to get a goat farm.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the website for Mood at https://hellomood.co/ Connect with David on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-charles-b105911a5/ Read an interview with David on imensch at https://ideamensch.com/david-charles/#:~:text=David%20Charles%20is%20a%20growth,tailored%20to%20set%20your%20mood

David Charles grew up in his father's chocolate factory. Now, he makes a different kind of candy – infused with cannabis for the medicinal and energetic benefits of his consumers. David is a growth marketer, storyteller, and serial entrepreneur. Currently, he serves as the Co-Founder, CEO, and COO of MOOD, a surging e-commerce dispensary that produces legal, high-quality THC products tailored to set your mood. The team at Mood hand-selects cannabis strains for their degrees of varying cannabinoids and terpene profiles, enhancing naturally occurring profiles by adding additional cannabinoids and terpenes to further promote a given mood. The result is a cannabinoid that still provides mood altering properties without giving its user a feeling of being overwhelmed. And while it's cannabis and technically not marijuana – it enhances the life and mood of the user, naturally. Mood has been in business for just over a year. Since then, they have experienced massive growth and they have already upgraded their 5,000 square foot warehouse to a 30,000 square foot warehouse to accommodate their production needs. Before David helped found Mood, he tried a lot of other business ventures. He was born with an entrepreneurial spirit, and never let setbacks, failures or mistakes discourage him from growing as an individual and leader. Today's episode centers around David's story before he founded Mood, and it's a fascinating one. As business owners, we can learn so much from how David sees entrepreneurship: as a masterclass, an experience, a series of lessons, and ultimately a grand adventure. One size does not fit all David Charles is a smart and successful entrepreneur. But he did not enjoy school, or prescriptive learning. Unlike students who simply did what they were told and memorized facts for tests, David struggled to engage. But when he found something interesting, he became obsessed to the point of losing sleep and staying up all night to read and learn. Like some rare students out there, David just was not an average student or an average person - he was an exceptional learner, despite his struggles to get good grades. This theme carried through into adulthood. Whereas many of his peers would get traditional jobs or follow traditional paths, David refused. Instead, he began setting out to make money in his favorite place: the internet. Throughout his life, David loved the internet. He loved that he could learn practically whatever he wanted, and whenever he found a gap in knowledge, he set out to find the answers. From his business researching pheromones to his consulting company, David forged his way through every lesson he could learn until he found what he was looking for. Lessons were hard won David started a business with a Co-founder, his friend Jake. While they admired and respected one another, they were young and inexperienced. Now, he laughs. After all, they had no background in launching and scaling companies - and they were on the road to some hard earned lessons. When their venture collapsed, David reflected on his mistakes as he got a job and picked up the pieces. He realized that he and Jake both avoided conflict to the point of sabotage, never discussing essential topics because they were too afraid to seem negative or difficult. It was a vital moment in both of their lives, and they parted amicably. The right business at the right time David and Jake had not seen one another for years when David was living out his dreams of joining a telehealth company. He was on the brink of becoming part of their full-time marketing staff when Jake called him up. After a long time, he was calling him to tell him that he saw an opportunity, and he wanted to give their business relationship another shot. He told David about the edible cannabis industry, and David jumped on it. It was a serendipitous time to make the leap, and the rest is history. Tune in next week for Part II of The Experiential Entrepreneur with David Charles… Quotes “I was a horrible student in high school. I just didn't enjoy prescriptive learning. If a teacher assigned a book, I would either not read it at all, or I'd read a few pages, find it interesting, and stay up all night reading it. I didn't do much of what I was supposed to do, but I was a voracious learner.” “I went through a real dark night of the soul. I sold the nice trappings I had accumulated, just to pay my rent.” “I wanted to do something real. I had to humble myself. I had to say okay, I have been involved in these businesses that have turned over many millions of dollars. I'm a smart and experienced guy. But I don't have a next step. Right now, I have to get a job.” “The people who were starting telehealth companies were not marketers. They were tech people or medical people. But they didn't know how to market. I could win on marketing alone.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the website for Mood at https://hellomood.co/ Connect with David on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-charles-b105911a5/ Read an interview with David on imensch at https://ideamensch.com/david-charles/#:~:text=David%20Charles%20is%20a%20growth,tailored%20to%20set%20your%20mood

David Charles runs The Resource Center (TRC) for the AIA St. Louis Chapter, a collaborative space for designers and product representatives to discuss projects and gather resources. One of TRC's most recent education sessions covered “Aging in Place,” the idea that a space can be designed to adapt with its occupants as they age to provide a safe and comfortable environment regardless of age or ability. Unfortunately, this isn't the case for many people's homes and they have to downsize or move into an age-friendly environment. Other topics covered in this most recent episode of Build Green, Live Green include transitioning back to doing business in person, no matter how exhausting or invigorating, and how groups like TRC can continually support the A&D community as roles and workflows are altered to fit the times.
Merry Met virtual traveller! It's here! It's finally here! Season 3 has arrived and the podcast has had a bit of a makeover. I really hope you will like the new format which includes me taking you on a ramble, singing and of course lots of folklore and a story. For this episode patrons chose, 'Beneath The Snowy Thorn' and so I'm taking you on a tour of my local hedgerows, singing the ballad of Thomas De Rhymer, talking about the folklore of the flora and fauna of UK hedgerows and telling the story of Yallery Brown. On occasion there are dark folkloric characters explored in this podcast and so, as always, I would recommend that you should listen through first before listening with younger members of your household. David Charles has been keeping bees since 1962. Before bee suits David and his fellow beekeepers tended to their bees armed only with some net curtains and a pair of bicycle clips. And what characters there were in those days! What are the best plants for bees? Did beekeepers really use sulphur to kill their bees to get the honey? What happens when you are stung on the hand by a mass of bees? A fascinating potted history of beekeeping. Some bee-tech but all explained in our show notes and a lovely listen!

It has been 15 years since David Charles and I worked together at BSSP. David has since gone on to jobs at AKQA, 72 and Sunny, and opening the Los Angeles outpost for KesselsKramer. He started off in Brazil writing comic books before making his way into advertising with the dreams of becoming a filmmaker. At AKQA and KesselsKramer he got the chance to direct spots and hone his skills. This all was put to good use when he came across an amazing opportunity while working with the team at Airbnb. Post the Trump election the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus announced it would be protesting by touring the South by Bus. After winning over the chorus and Airbnb David went on to make the documentary Gay Chorus Deep South which has picked up a ton of accolades on the festival circuit including the audience award at Tribeca. The film was recently purchased by MTV. In the episode, we talk about David's journey from advertising to filmmaking and the process involved in making his first documentary. We also talk about how the film served to explain the essence of the Airbnb brand and the power of long-form filmmaking to tell brand stories.

The Book of Mormon has important things to say about how we say important things, according to David Charles Gore. He's author of The Voice of the People: Political Rhetoric in the Book of Mormon (Maxwell Institute, 2019). Gore says it's not enough to be in possession of the truth. We also have to know how to share it in ways that actually reach other people's hearts. The Book of Mormon seems to be a cautionary history in this regard, calling readers to develop what Gore calls an “ethic of mournful wakefulness.” Gore's Maxwell Institute Guest Lecture is available here. About the Guest David Charles Gore (PhD, Texas A&M University) is associate professor and department head in the Department of Communication at the University of Minnesota in Duluth. Gore regularly teaches courses on the history and theory of rhetoric, including its application to globalization and Stoic philosophy. His work has appeared in Philosophy & Rhetoric, Argumentation & Advocacy, Dialogue: a Journal of Mormon Thought, and a variety of other venues. Having discussed the lessons he learned from his visit to the National Association of Black Veterinarians Conference in part one (Ep 15), David Charles considers the influence role models could have on BME students and the next generation of vets in the UK. – David Charles is senior vice-president of the Association of Veterinary Students UK and Ireland, having served as its president from 2018-19. He graduated from the University of Bristol in 2019 and works at Oakwood Veterinary Group in Norfolk. Earlier this year, he presented at the first National Association for Black Veterinarians Conference in the US to discuss barriers faced by current and potential BME veterinary students on both sides of the Atlantic. According to the latest data, Dr Charles is one of 3% of vets in the UK from black or minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds – and he said studying to become a vet in such an environment can be “challenging”. “First of all, there is the lack of BME role models in the UK for vets, vet students and aspiring vet students,” he said. “It’s very common to go through five years of training without being taught by, or seeing practice with, any BME vets. “Some students feel a sense of isolation at veterinary school – especially those where either half or the whole course is spent in a rural location, away from the mixed demographic and societies of the main university, such as those at Langford (the University of Bristol), Leahurst (the University of Liverpool) or Sutton Bonington (the University of Nottingham). “Another concern is the lack of support for BME applicants and poor guidance from vet schools for many students, while access to vet school taster courses run by universities can be difficult. “The inevitable result is often a perception that the veterinary profession is inaccessible or unwelcoming for BME school students.” The full story was published in the 16 September issue of Veterinary Times.

The documentary Gay Chorus Deep South chronicles one community’s response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws in Southern states and the divisive 2016 election. The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarks on a tour of the American Deep South. Led by Gay Chorus conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the tour brings a message of music, love, and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers travelled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma. They performed in churches, community centers, and concert halls in hopes of uniting us in a time of difference. The journey also challenges Tim and other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain, and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. The conversations and connections that emerge offer a glimpse of a less divided America, where the things that divide us - faith, politics, sexual identity - are set aside by the soaring power of music and humanity. Director David Charles Rodrigues joins us to talk about the expectations and realities that comes with traveling to communities with the hope of changing hearts and minds. On today's episode I have one of my longtime friends, musician David Charles back on the podcast! Dave was previously on the podcast on Episode 1! Back when I was trying to decide if I should start a podcast, I knew Dave would be the perfect person to talk to as he had been touring with Neon Trees as their tour guitarist and we had a history in music together. All these years later Dave is finally back on the show. Even though we just live a few streets away from each other, we rarely get to catch up and usually only run into each other at comedy shows or when I see Dave waiting to cross the street (listen to the episode for context). Dave and I talked about what we've been up to, the awkward social pressure of having adult friends, the people we see around our neighborhood, The Simpsons, Norm MacDonald impressions, and a lot of other nonsense. A huge Thanks to Dave for coming by and hanging out on the podcast. Make sure you follow Dave on all of the links on the website, download is solo albums, and look for him on tour with Neon Trees! Thanks, Dave! Enjoy the episode.
Today we continue our history of American cemeteries by exploring the ideological, religious, and artistic origins of the rural cemetery movement in America. We explore the development of Perl Lachaise in Paris and how that idea was adapted to fit the growing United States. This episode will explore what made rural/garden cemeteries different, and why they continue to capture the American imagination almost 190 years after Mount Auburn was founded. David Charles is a graduate of Pottstown Senior High School located in Southeastern, PA. Growing up as the middle child in a subsidized housing development, David has first-hand experience with the obstacles that many youth face on a daily bases in many situations. He grew up knowing what it was like for the adults in his life to work to make ends meet and not have enough time in the day for family engagement. David has also traveled to areas such as California, Florida, New York, Atlanta, and Germany and met many lost children in his travels. While he pursued his music career, he worked to help many youth musicians who crossed his path in subtle ways. He understands the plight of the young man who has a hard time believing that making better choices equates to a better life. The understanding and dream David had then and stays steadfast to today is the motivation behind the creation of S.T.R.I.V.E. Initiative (STRIVE – Strengthening Tomorrow Requires Initiative & Vision Everyday). Currently, David is the Executive Director for STRIVE Initiative. STRIVE is a 501(c)(3) certified nonprofit organization. The goal of STRIVE is simple – to assist under-served youth in realizing their full potential. STRIVE operates as an organization with a purpose to enlighten, aid and enhance the lives of youth in under-resourced areas through character-building programs including arts, recreation, physical activities, education and civic activities. STRIVE is currently working with local school districts to conduct educational programs for at-risk students undecided about their future that may choose an unhealthy way of progression in their lives David’s personal mission continues to be sparked by his sincere commitment to help area youth develop lifelong changes to improve their life and the lives of others. The long-term commitment of STRIVE, under the direction of David, work to support community revitalization through personal development of our precious youth. The younger generation has the potential to be leaders, so it is crucial that they have proper resources and motivation. David has also assisted the psychiatrist at a private nonprofit for more than eight years; empowering participants to find a pathway back to a lifetime of recovery. www.spiritofgheel.org David is also featured on media sites; broadcasting to over 50,000 schools nation wide with physical fitness content.

I am happiest at work when I am surrounded by creative types and talking about creative endeavors. The LA Design Festival has come and gone, but for the past few weeks, I have been culling throughout the content from the event and putting it together in ways that I want you to hear and see it. Sometimes, that means changing the order and this is one of those times. Following is a conversation for anyone who considers themselves a “creative”, an artist, designer, architect or any other title that says, “I engage in creative endeavors.” The following conversation was held at the LA Design Festival and focuses on the origins and process behind creative thinking by four decorated practitioners of the art… Participants include; Liam Young, the Australian born architect, founder of Tommorow’s Thoughts Today, a think tank that explores imaginary urbanisms. Young has taught at Princeton, currently at Sci-Arc. David Charles is a creative director and filmmaker. He has worked on 72andSunny, he’s the ECD of the LA office for Dutch shop KasselSkramer and he is a Sundance New Frontiers. Kerri Elsmly is the Chief Creative Officer for experiential design studio, Second Story and Toby Past, the award-winning Group Creative Director at Sapient Razorfish. Toby’s brand creative work is extensive and includes work for Acura, AT&T, Disney Entertainment among others. This conversation is being presented to you before you hear the their panel on the subject of Design Thinking. The panel conversation was great and we will be presenting that, soon. But this conversation is about the process that goes into the creative thought process. Issues that you deal with every day from ideating an issue, trouble shooting, problem solving, falling in love with your own ideas versus letting them go and dealing with creative block. If you are a creative thinker, you deal with these issues daily. This is how some of the best in the business from different disciplines approach those very same issues. #design #Art #creativethinking #LADesignFestival Convo By Design - http://www.ConvoByDesign.com #ConvoByDesign Snyder Diamond - http://www.SnyderDiamond.com Miele USA - http://www.MieleUSA.com Vondom USA - http://www.Vondom.com Music provided by Electric Sol Artist: Electric Sol Song: Your Love Makes Me High www.electricsolmusic.com Convo By Design is presented by Snyder Diamond, always first with what’s next in the kitchen and bath. As Opera North revives its acclaimed 2015 production of Kiss Me Kate, the humorous reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Taming of The Shrew by Bella and Sam Spewack, Judi Herman speaks to the show's musical director and orchestrator David Charles Abell. He discusses the Spewacks, the brilliant Jewish husband and wife team, revealing the role the Spewacks played in getting Cole Porter onboard to write the musical that revived his career and is arguably his best and most popular work.
A tour which began from a desire to offer solace and inspiration to communities under attach became, also, an inspiration to those who participated and to people across the country. Capturing the imagination of many communities, the Lavender Pen tour attracted a full concert of people dedicated to capturing the tour for history. Most important, a film was envisioned to tell the stories of the tour as it travelled the southern U.S. As bridges were built between the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, everyone traveling with them ultimately felt themselves pulled into the embrace. How does a filmmaker like David Charles, tasked with telling the story yet drawn into the story himself, decide what should be included? And how does his own life experience affect his view? What happens when the director becomes part of the action?

Interview starts 36:45 David Charles Plate is back to continue this conversation about the synchronities between movies and music, and dates and times as well. Some mind blowing stuff here that is really hard to believe. What is at work here…? A higher order or intentional creation of this mystery. Did Kubrick get Trump elected, what dates are connected to when Alex Jones and John Ronson infiltrated Bohemian Grove? We also get into the latest synchronization of ABBA and Waterloo the movie, and the dates between movies and events, The Golden Bow, The Outsider, The Scape Goat, The Prophecy of Zohar and 911, Tarot, Numerology, Pink Floyd, and many fascinating books and movies. code 5021756 http://thesyncbook.com/davids-digital-collage/ In the intro Graham talks about the latest CSETI outing, and brings forth another weather modification segment. Interview starts 33:40 David Charles Plate joins us for a great, long chat about his fresh research into translating the Zohar Prophecies, Synchronicities and matching classic albums to movies. We chat about the upcoming translation "tears of the soldiers”, "prayers of the small children”, and "young scholars”… could be very appropriate to what is going on lately in this sociopolitical climate. David talks about some crazy synchronicities, uncanny resonances around movies and events like 911 which is the day the Zohar predicted. We also chat about Pink Floyd and matching those classic albums to movies. Secret - not so secret societies and the occult goes along with all of this of course. David was the co-host of Always Record on Syncbook. We are meeting up near Spokane Washington with some friends if anyone is interested. Hello and apologies for the delay in uploading this episode which was actually recorded last Sunday. Events and internet access have conspired against me.
