Today's episode of DWSC is a delight in so many ways, the main reason being our guest detective, writer, actor and comedian, Susan Harrison, who comes armed with a neat trick to deal with a criminal who may have mistaken you for a child, and just as much of an understanding of numbers as Taylor and Hannah. **We then hear about a woman who, if born in a different time, would have been either doing the sums on Countdown, or in charge of ALL the banks - either way, it's a huge loss to the current era. Then, this week's listener crime poses far too many questions about what can (and should) fit up one's butt, and why some people take their love of Marmite to a whole new level. **Maths is impossible.Check out our Patreon page, for invites to our live zoom records, shout outs, ad free and early access to eps and LOTS MORE!Come and see Taylor and Hannah LIVE at their Christmas show in Brighton!Tickets are now on sale for their double header Christmas Show at The Brighton Komedia on 16th December 2024All details can be found here -Drunk Women Solving Crime - The UK's hit true crime comedy podcast Hosted on Acast. Another weekend, another senseless loss of a young life.Zion Purukamu, 16, died at Christchurch Hospital after being stabbed at a 17th birthday party. Two teenagers aged 14 and 17 were also stabbed at the Fendalton property remain in a serious but stable condition in hospital. It's understood that an Airbnb had been rented for the party, and trouble started when gate crashers turned up and were turned away.  The property had been rented through Airbnb, listed by Christchurch Holiday Homes, which makes you wonder if enough checks and balances are done on who's renting properties on the books.  One of the company's directors, Susan Harrison, believed the guest who booked it had a legitimate account, which meant they were over 18.Police have spoken to the Airbnb renter.   The property's rules include not having guests after 10pm.Harrison yesterday said they thought it was strange the booking was for two people in a large house, but a staffer had passed the property earlier in the evening and not noticed anything untoward.  The mother of a girl who attended the party said it was a girl's birthday party and the house had been rented for that purpose when uninvited guests showed up, some of whom were kicked out. It brings back very raw memories of when a couple of young teenagers were stabbed in our neighbourhood when my daughter was a teenager. She was desperate to host a party for her best friend when my then husband and I were going away for the weekend, and we were adamant it wouldn't happen. Not because we didn't trust her - it was just there had been ample tragic evidence that things could get out of hand through no fault of their own. There was much flouncing and huffing on both sides and in the end we compromised on hiring an apartment that was part of a hotel complex that could host six young people and that had security so nobody could just wander in to the party. It's tricky though. And a tricky age. And if people are hell bent on breaking rules, they will. But at least make it hard for them. Relying on a staffer doing a drive by to ensure all is well probably isn't gold standard security. And it does make me very nervous about renting out property to just anyone.

Susan Harrison has been with The Showstoppers for about seven years now. Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is on at The Other Palace at the moment but also at the Lyric Theatre in the West End one Monday a month. Last month it celebrated its 1000th show. The show is different every night. The audience make suggestions for the setting and the cast take it from there. It works so well and I really can’t recommend it enough. Susan and I met at the Museum of Comedy in London, which is in Bloomsbury, underground, below a church. While we were there I tried and failed to describe that it reminded me of The Court of Miracles from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Of course as soon as I left I remembered what it was called. “Match me, Sidney." James Wong Howe had just won his Oscar for his black-and-white cinematography for “The Rose Tattoo” when the star of the film, Burt Lancaster, hired him to shoot his next picture, “Sweet Smell of Success.” Howe and director Alexander Mackendrick knew right away that to tell this story properly, they really needed to film on the streets of New York City at night. So they did, and in the process created a stunningly gorgeous and dark film noir that feels like it truly lives in the city, not on some Hollywood soundstage. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Black-and-White Cinematography of James Wong Howe series with Mackendrick's wonderful 1956 film, “Sweet Smell of Success.” We talk about the chiaroscuro look that Howe captured in this film, and also look at the deep focus and camera movement and how it all helps tell the story. We chat about Ernest Lehman and Clifford Odets, the writers, looking at what they each contributed to the wickedly brilliant dialogue. We discuss the cast — notably Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Susan Harrison, Marty Milner, Barbara Nichols and Emile Meyer — and what they bring to the table. We touch on Walter Winchell, the figure on whom Lancaster's character was based. And we talk about how the film was received at the time — poorly — as well as how opinion of it changed over time.
