Dr. Eric Helms, PhD., CSCS of 3D Muscle Journey and barbell athlete shares his path from FAI to hip labral repair and femoral acetabular impingement (FAI) surgery in both hips at the same time. After years of battling the idea of surgery and failed attempts to continue getting stronger, Eric decided to have surgery on both hips due to pain and repeated setbacks in training. For many of us, having surgery is a major decision. We question: What surgeon will perform the procedure? When should you do it? What will the recovery look like? How long will it take to be back to normal? What will normal look like? Do the risks outweigh the rewards? There are so many questions, fears, and doubts that could go through our heads. The reality of it is that surgery isn't a quick fix but when it's the correct treatment, it can address symptoms and improve function, sports performance, and quality of life. Even in that case, there is still a lot of work to be done throughout the rehab process but it is possible to recover, return to barbell training, AND get stronger than you were before. Listen to this episode of the PRS Podcast to learn about Eric's never-before-shared full journey of FAI with labral tears. He shares his journey from training with pain and stalled progress, to a bilateral hip surgery and significant recovery, back to getting under the bar and finally hitting PRs instead of roadblocks in his training. When it comes to eating to promote muscle hypertrophy, muscle repair/recovery and maintenance of mass and function, protein has been an obvious focus. Indeed muscle mass and quality are dependent on the continuous remodeling of skeletal muscle proteins. This is related to the amount of muscle protein balance, i.e. the net difference between muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and muscle protein breakdown (MPB). Because of this, MPS has long been used as a proxy measure for muscle repair and/or growth of muscle. Protein feeding increases MPS, with the amino acid leucine having a specifically strong impact on MPS. Therefore both the dose of protein and the amino acid profile of the protein have been looked at to assess which protein sources are “superior” for muscle mass and function. This has typically led to viewing animal proteins are better than animal proteins. But many assumptions are layered into conversations on the topic. In this episode we explore some important points that are often neglected. Is MPS as reliable as we assume? Does the amino acid profile tell us everything about the anabolic effect of a protein? Does dose and timing matter as much as we think? How does the picture change when we look at whole foods or mixed meals? I've looked up to Eric for a long time and it was an honor to finally be able to sit down and chat. Eric is a scientist, competitive lifter/physique athlete, a part of Team 3DMJ, co-creator of the Muscle and Strength Pyramid ebooks, and about 163 other things. He's impressive, to say the least. But even more so, he's a very chill and humble guy who articulates his thoughts better than most. I got to cover a little bit of his background, but I really wanted to deep dive into why he thinks the way he thinks and how we—the listeners—can apply his thought processes into making our own lives better. I also asked him how the everyday person can know what's true or not when it comes to diet and exercise information since you hear people talking about the Keto diet one day and the Vegan diet the next...who's right? Eric breaks it all down in this episode and I can't wait for you to hear it. Enjoy! Our fourth episode takes a look at the final macronutrient: fat. We spend a few minutes discussing the documentary “Transformer” about Janae Marie Kroczaleski…and our small part in it. We also discuss streaming services and how hard it is to get everything we want to watch in one place these days. Then, we jump into fat. We know that fat has the most calories per gram of the three macros, and that people on ketogenic diets eat a lot of it. Beyond that, we have a lot more questions: Why does fat make everything delicious? Is oil just liquid fat? Do you burn more fat when you eat more fat? Are there really good fats and bad fats? Eric Helms, PhD. helps us figure these things out. Our ideas about the question start around 12:45. Eric runs down the facts starting at around 19:13. Eric has a BS in fitness and wellness, an MS in exercise science, a second masters in sports nutrition, a PhD in strength and conditioning, and is a research fellow for AUT at the Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand. Huge thanks to Eric for being our expert. We’re kicking this new show off by asking seemingly basic questions about diet and nutrition. First up, “What is (dietary) protein anyway?" After a quick catch up session, we talk through the “facts” of what we think we know about this question – which, of course raises even more questions like... How much protein do you really need? What’s a complete protein? How many essential amino acids are there? Then, we bring in Eric Helms, PhD. to give us the low down. Eric has a BS in fitness and wellness, an MS in exercise science, a second masters in sports nutrition, a PhD in strength and conditioning, and is a research fellow for AUT at the Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand. Our ideas about the question start around 10:10. Eric runs down the facts starting at around 20:25. Huge thanks to Eric for being our expert.
