If you're a longtime listener, you know by now that I don't pick the books we do every episode, the guest does. Mostly that's so the onus of reading or rereading fresh for the recording session is on me; people normally choose books they love or have recently finished in order to not have to read 400 pages of Victorian Sadness again and again. And I admit, I have rarely said no to a book that someone chose to discuss. But I almost said no to this one. I hadn't read it since college, I didn't get it, I was too uncomfortable. But I should've known that my guest wouldn't lead me astray. You all are in for a phenomenal episode. This episode was recorded just as the Coronavirus pandemic really took off, and so Esmé and I talk about the collective anxiety of it, herd immunity, the 24-hour news cycle, how this time is impacting people with chronic illness and mental illness, and how this time illuminates the fact that we, as feely humans, are not meant to be individualistic; we’re meant to be connected and together. The survivors we work with every day embody the true meaning of courage, hope, and determination. They inspire our unrelenting commitment to end violence in our families, communities, and world. Visit: www.sfaws.org Founded in 1979, Communities United Against Violence (CUAV) works to build the power of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) communities to transform violence and oppression. We support the healing and leadership of those impacted by abuse and mobilize our broader communities to replace cycles of trauma with cycles of safety and liberation. As part of the larger social justice movement, CUAV works to create truly safe communities where everyone can thrive. Visit: www.cuav.org The California chapter of Survived and Punished is a collective of about 15 people who are survivors (including survivors who are formerly incarcerated), community organizers, attorneys, victim advocates, policy experts, and scholars. They are building relationships with survivors who are incarcerated at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, the biggest women’s prison in the U.S. As part of this process, S&P partnered with TGI Justice Project and CCWP in 2018 to launch a survey to hundreds of survivors in women’s and men’s prisons in California. Feminista is a writer, community activist, social worker, public speaker, and one of our extremely longtime faves. She wrote her latest book—out now—to capture the current moment of black feminism on social media and in digital communities, and serve as her personal contribution to feminist theory and history. There is a unique existence being both black and woman in this world. And black feminism is the refusal to choose one or the other. It is the declaration that I am both, and I will not choose one or the other, and that all of my liberation work, and all of the things that I fight for are because I am both. —Feminista Jones, activist and author Y’all definitely need to listen up, because she’s full of wisdom. Award-winning writer Esmé Wang knows from personal experience how tough it is to be ambitious and deal with limitation. She is a woman who lives with chronic illness, including late-stage Lyme disease and schizoaffective disorder. She believes that just because one lives with limitations — whether they be caregiving responsibilities, disability, chronic illness, or any other life circumstance that cause you to feel fenced in, doesn’t mean a person can’t leave a legacy of creative resilience. Esmé Weijun Wang is a novelist and essayist. Her debut novel, The Border of Paradise, was called a Best Book of 2016 by NPR and one of the 25 Best Novels of 2016 by Electric Literature. She was named by Granta as one of the “Best of  Young American Novelists” in 2017, and is the recipient of the Graywolf Nonfiction Prize for her forthcoming essay collection, The Collected Schizophrenias. In her blog, The Unexpected Shape, she provides resources that assist ambitious people who live with limitations In this conversation, Branden and Esmé tackle the question of why people living with illness need both the practice and living-out of resilience in their daily lives — and how boundaries laid out in life’s game can make things more interesting. I was super excited to interview the lovely Esmé Weijun Wang this week for the podcast!  Esmé and I covered so much ground in this episode, from her mission of radical sincerity to the value of small talk, from finding your authentic voice online  to telling your story, from building resilience and finding community.  If you've ever struggled with how to tell your own creative story amidst everyone else online, this episode is for you!  Thank you so much, Esmé, it was such a treat having you on the show!  PS. At the beginning of this episode, I also introduce something I’m super excited about: the Raise your Hand Say Yes book club. We’re starting with The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. Get your copy now and give it a read – the episode where we discuss it will air on March 4!
