THE ONGOING ANGUISH OF ISRAELI HOSTAGE FAMILY MEMBERS

We are celebrating the safe return of three female hostages held in captivity by Hamas. They are Romi Gonen, 24, Emily Damari, 28, and Doron Steinbrecher, 31.In this episode, I've dug into The MirYam Institute archives to bring you two unique briefings we facilitated, both made by the family members of hostages whose loved ones are yet to return home. I've done so in order to share the ongoing anguish of too many hostage family members, who despite the scenes of happiness we all saw on this day, still do not know the fate of their loved ones. The first features Galia David, mother of Evyatar David. Evyatar was 23 years of age when he was abducted into Gaza. Because of his age and gender, he is cynically deemed to be a "man of age" by Hamas, a category of hostage that will only be released during the very final stages of this deal. In this episode of the show, his mother Galia is recorded addressing herself to the congregation of Park Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan, New York, on January 7th, 2024, flanked by her son Ilay David. The second features Itzhar Lifshitz. Both of Itzhars' aged parents, Oded and Yocheved, were kidnapped by Hamas. Yocheved was released by Hamas during the previous hostage release deal. His father, Oded, remains in Hamas captivity and is expected to be released during the first, 42 day long phase, of the hostage release deal due to his age, having been kidnaped at the age of 83. Izhar joined the MirYam Institute's Israel Strategy and Policy tour, 2024 - a tour of The Nazi Death camps that we facilitate for cadets and future officers of the United States Armed Forces. In this conversation, recorded in May, 2024, in Warsaw, Poland, Itzhar shares his thoughts on the fate of his father, before taking questions from the cadets.Support the showThe MirYam Institute. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Settlements reporter Jeremy Sharon and writer Melanie Lidman join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Yesterday, Israel broke a record when authorities advanced plans for some 5,700 additional new settlement homes, bringing the year total to some 13, 000. Where are some of the building starts? The United States said it would cut support to scientific and technology research in Israeli institutions in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Golan Heights. Which university specifically does this target? Yesterday, Sharon was onsite at the illegal outpost of Evyatar that was repopulated last week. Who is there now? He also visited the Palestinian village of Turmus Ayya, where he met with the family of the man killed in unclear circumstances during last week's vigilante violence following the fatal shooting attack near Eli. Lidman brings us a study conducted by Hebrew University Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, who claims that he has found evidence of a network of biblical cities — including road infrastructure and communication between the capital and its satellites — that basically shores up the biblical narrative of a Davidic kingdom. And finally, we hear about how a team of scientists from Ariel University and Tel Aviv University has written a kind of Google translate for millennia-old Akkadian. Discussed articles include: Israel advances plans for 5,700 settlement homes, breaking annual record in 6 months US cuts science, tech cooperation with Israeli institutions in the West Bank Web of biblical cities depicts King David as major ruler, says Israeli archaeologist Groundbreaking AI project translates 5,000-year-old cuneiform at push of a button Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Settlements reporter Jeremy Sharon and environment reporter Sue Surkes join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Starting early Wednesday, hundreds of settlers, including leaders of the movement and members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition, have traveled to the illegal West Bank outpost of Evyatar. What's happening there right now? Also Wednesday, hundreds of Israeli settlers tore through the Palestinian town of Turmus Ayya, setting homes, cars, and fields on fire and terrorizing residents shortly after Israeli victims of a Palestinian terror shooting in the West Bank were buried. One Palestinian is now dead under conflicting circumstances. Sharon weighs in. As a result of Tuesday's shooting, the government announced that the settlement of Eli will build 1,000 new housing units. But there's more to that story. For a second day yesterday, thousands of Druze residents of the Golan Heights rioted against the construction of a new wind farm near the town of Majdal Shams. What is the overall plan for wind turbines in the Golan and why is the Druze community up in arms. Lawyer Amit Becher scored a landslide victory with 73% of the vote in the election for Israel Bar Association (IBA) chairman on Tuesday. What are the ripple effects of Becher's win? Surkes brought us a first-of-its-kind study this week: a Global Food Donation Policy Atlas. How does Israel rank? Discussed articles include: Settlers mass at Evyatar, vow to reestablish outpost in response to deadly attack Palestinian killed in unclear circumstances as settlers rampage in West Bank town 4 Druze seriously injured, 12 cops hurt in massive riots against Golan wind farm Renewable energy company starts testing first of 39 wind turbines on Golan Heights Winning bar contest, Becher spoils coalition hope of controlling judge picks, for now International review finds Israel can do more to donate surplus food to needy Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Zman Yisrael editor Biranit Goren and settlements reporter Jeremy Sharon join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today's episode. Sharon was at the Kfar Etzion settlement yesterday for the funeral of 20-year-old Maia and 15-year-old Rina Dee, who were murdered in a shooting attack on Friday afternoon in the Jordan Valley. He describes a truly remarkable family embraced by its community. A poll published yesterday on Channel 13 shows a dramatic drop in support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party. Goren explains the significance of who is on the wane and who is on the rise. Three mayors in border towns in the north -- from Metulla, Mateh Asher, and Shlomi, northern communities and regions that took rocket fire this week — were allegedly blackballed from a strategic defense briefing on Sunday. Why? A three-kilometer march in support of the wild cat West Bank settlement of Evyatar took place today at noon, with several government ministers, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, and other coalition members. Sharon and Goren explain why this march is so controversial. In this episode of ‘Law, disrupted,' John is joined by Evyatar Ben Artzi, co-founder & CEO of Darrow – an Israel-based company that uses artificial intelligence to scan the internet and identify potential claims. Darrow does this by identifying instances where companies have broken the law or failed to comply with their own rules or policies. The conversation begins with Evyatar discussing his background prior to starting Darrow, including his years as a combat officer in the Israeli Defense Forces, his legal education including his study of Law and Cognitive Science and his tenure as a Supreme Court clerk. Evyatar explains that while at the Supreme Court, he witnessed some of the challenges plaintiffs' firms faced, inspiring him to start working on a data-driven way to find winning cases and bring them to law firms.John and Evyatar then dive into how Darrow operates. Evyatar explains how Darrow's “justice intelligence” helps lawyers find better cases, reducing due-diligence costs of finding those cases, and bringing them to court effectively. The process starts by studying successful cases from the past and developing a formula or algorithm to identify similar patterns from current real-world data. Darrow then searches public information, including news feeds, social media, administrative filings, environmental monitoring, HTML source codes, and legal data, including court dockets and legislation, to find other instances of the same patterns that have previously led to successful cases. The system then determines how many people were harmed and forecasts what the likely legal outcome would be to help set the value of the case. Instead of a lawyer looking to find a single “smoking gun,” the artificial intelligence system combines many data points across the internet to put together a complete claim that resembles a previous successful case. Then, Darrow finds a lawyer to examine whether the potential claim is actionable.John and Evyatar discuss how this system is applied to various types of claims. They discuss how it works in data privacy cases where data from the source code of a company's website or app can be compared to the company's legal documents, terms of service or privacy policies. They then explore recent cases where tech companies have faced trouble for sharing data with third parties, contrary to representations they have made to users. In particular, John and Evyatar discuss a recent case in which a Special Master was appointed to interview Facebook engineers to determine exactly what data Facebook has from its users. It has become commonplace that companies simply do not know what data they collect from users, where it is stored, and what uses are made of it. They then turn to the incentives companies have to comply with data privacy requirements including California's statute imposing set penalties per user and recent high dollar class settlements. The conversation then moves to how Darrow's artificial intelligence can help identify environmental claims. John and Evyatar examine how complaints on social media can be matched with hard data from environmental sensors, as well as public information about factories in the area, including previous environmental claims, to develop a viable mass tort case. They also discuss how online pricing data can be evaluated together with public data about product launches and sales to identify patterns that suggest cartel activity or other antitrust claims. They emphasize the need to carefully evaluate such situations to determine if there is evidence of a conspiracy or other illegal activity associated with the patterns in the data.John and Evyatar then touch upon data breach cases that do not implicate privacy concerns and how the plaintiffs' class action bar has adapted its behavior with respect to these cases. Finally, John and Evyatar discuss how Darrow sets its priorities, and the types

Eventually I noticed that many children with physical issues or delays essentially suffered from integration issues. While the report listed the external manifestations of “poor handwriting” or “low tone” or “visual processing delays,” when I started to work with the child, I could see their challenges through their eyes and relate to their experience. I became my own OT client. I worked on myself as soon as I had the knowledge - allowing me to be free and lead a happy, accomplished, satisfying life helping others overcome their limitations as well. You see, I haven't forgotten what it feels like to be stuck. That memory fuels my drive for research, for training other professionals, and for making changes in the educational system. And it drives me to be here at Hands on OT, to help your child get unstuck, to work through her integration issues, so she too can net positive in life. https://www.instagram.com/handsonapproaches/   Dini Weinberg - Dini is the founder and creative director of Dini Wigs. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Today's panel comprises our United States correspondent Jacob Magid and culture editor Jessica Steinberg, along with host Amanda Borschel-Dan. On President Reuven Rivlin's final day in office, we discuss lingering resonance in US policy from his farewell tour to the White House last week. Among issues covered was the Israeli linkage of the prisoner swap with Gaza reconstruction -- which the Biden administration has promised to bring up with Cairo. Next, Magid gives an in-depth look at the recent peaceful evacuation at the new wildcat hilltop settlement at Evyatar. What kind of deal was struck between the settlers, government, and defense officials -- and does this set a "dangerous" precedent? Tel Aviv's DocAviv festival is running through July 10 with in-person screenings -- or online for Israeli residents. We hear about a few of the choice selections. And finally, learn about the refreshing pre-state Israeli soft drink Gazoz, making a comeback in trendy Tel Aviv, and now the feature of a new cookbook by Benny Briga and Adeena Sussman. Discussed articles include: US opposes conditioning Gaza reconstruction on return of IDF troops' bodies ‘Illegal even under Israeli law': US pans establishment of new Evyatar outpost Settlers vacate illegal Evyatar outpost under deal that keeps it intact Featuring musical documentaries, Docaviv festival launches with 116 films Breezy summer drink concocted in Tel Aviv gets book of its own Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts.
