Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Best-selling Author and Ultramarathoner to Visit Gwinnett County Library The memoir "Finding Gobi," recounting ultramarathoner Dion Leonard's remarkable bond with a stray dog named Gobi in the Gobi Desert, has become a global bestseller, published in 24 languages. Leonard and Gobi will appear at the Gwinnett County Library's Snellville Branch on December 9 at 11 a.m. The dog accompanied Leonard through challenging terrains during an ultramarathon, capturing hearts worldwide. Despite Gobi briefly going missing in China, Leonard's story of finding her garnered widespread online support. For more details, contact the Snellville Branch Public Library at 770-978-5154.   STORY 2: Buford Sonny's restaurant manager recognized for 'acts of kindness in her community' Sonny's BBQ celebrated Giving Tuesday by recognizing three employees dedicated to spreading kindness, including Dawn Jackson, a manager at the Buford restaurant. Jackson, named Kindness Officer, actively engages in local fundraisers, supports first responders, and aids the homeless by organizing donations with her team. As part of Sonny's Kindness Crew, Jackson could donate $2,500 to the charity of her choice, and she chose Random Acts, an organization inspiring kindness globally. The project's withdrawal from consideration mandates a restart of the rezoning process. Critics claimed the halving of proposed units required a fresh application. The development, adjacent to Seckinger High School, sparked community concerns about density and traffic. The setback may delay the proposal's return until February. House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Sen. Clint Dixon praised the withdrawal, emphasizing the need to address overcrowding and traffic issues in the area.   STORY 5: Study uncovers professional and social stigma people with acne experience A recent study conducted in the U.S. reveals that individuals with acne, particularly those with darker skin tones and more severe cases, face significant social and professional stigma. The research, published in JAMA Dermatology, emphasizes the need to address stigmatizing attitudes and improve access to care for individuals with acne. The study found that participants were less inclined to be friends, have close contact, or share social media photos with individuals with severe acne, particularly if they had darker skin tones. The research underscores the importance of recognizing acne as a medical condition and ensuring access to appropriate treatment.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: ESOG - INGLES 2 – DTL   STORY 6: Gwinnett County bartender finalist in national Best Holiday Cocktail Contest Jay Ledbetter from Local Republic is a finalist in the Bar and Restaurant News Best Holiday Cocktail Contest, competing against national chain Eureka. Ledbetter's cocktail, the Tijuana Brass, features autumn spices and fresh herbs with tequila, creating a warm and flavorful drink. Described as a blend of savory, semi-sweet notes with rosemary and ginger, it aims to evoke holiday nostalgia. The contest, open for public voting until December 10, aims to identify the cocktail that best captures the holiday spirit. To vote for Ledbetter's Tijuana Brass, the public can visit the official contest website.   STORY 7: How much do people trust AI with their health? A survey of 2,000 US adults found that more Americans trust social media and health care websites for health advice over medical professionals, with 53% consulting healthcare websites and 46% relying on social media compared to 44% consulting their personal doctor. The survey, commissioned by UserTesting and conducted by OnePoll, also revealed that 73% believe they have a better understanding of their personal health than their doctor does. Moreover, 67% of Americans have looked up their symptoms on an internet search engine, and 52% have given a list of symptoms to a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT for a diagnosis. Additionally, 94% of respondents own a personal smart device that can track health, and 78% are confident that AI and tech companies would protect their health information.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: Henssler 60   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Our conversation today with Michelle Ross, Executive Director at Samuels Public Library and Melody Hotek, Vice President/President-Elect of the library's board of trustees gave some insight into the current status of library funding, new policies, and how decisions are made about administrative matters. In the first segment, Michelle & Melody explained the inner workings of the library that included where their funding comes from, how books are chosen for their collections, and who determines the category of those books. We talked about the role of the Board of Trustees as a governing board. Michelle also told us about her experience and education in library science and talked about how helpful that has been in a myriad of situations. The pair also discussed the library's commitment to transparency and emphasized that all their policies, staff information, book information, etc. can be found at ANY time on their website: https://samuelslibrary.net/  In the second segment, we talked about their current funding situation and the ongoing conversations with the Warren County Board of Supervisors. Michelle explained two of the policy changes that are currently in the works which include new card classifications that give parents more control over the types of books their young children can check out; and, a new adult collection in a new location that will include much of the content currently in question for young adults. Before we wrapped up our conversation, Michelle filled us in on two upcoming programs/events happening at the library: The Bigfoot Experience: Mike Familant LIVE! at the library on Thursday, June 15th, 2023, (tonight!) from 6pm - 7pm. A presentation about the search for Bigfoot from Mike Familant, a full-time bigfoot researcher, producer, and lead investigator from NorthWest New Jersey. In the Shadow of Big Red Eye is a show that travels to locations known to, or would make good habitats for a Sasquatch. Finding Gobi is both Dion's memoire and the story of how a little dog from the Gobi desert ended up finding his way to a family in the UK. Dion talks about some difficult moments in his life like when his father died of an asthma attack when he was only 9 years old, and then how his mom told him that his dad was never really his dad. Despite a difficult start, Dion made a good life for himself and found the love of his life, Lucja. Although neither Dion nor his wife were runners when they met, they both became avid ultra-runners who love a challenge. One of these challenges brought Dion to China for a 155 mile multi-day stage race through the Gobi desert where he found a little dog which he later named Gobi… actually it was more like the dog found Dion and then followed him while he ran the race... Dion fell in love with this little dog but trying to bring him home to the UK would prove to be another adventure, one that ended up bringing people together from all around the world to help make it happen. Dion Leonard is an ultra marathon runner with many top 10 finishes in some of the world's toughest races including the Badwater 135. He also won races including the Kalahari Extreme 155 mile race, Delirious W.E.S.T. 200 miles and become the first male to run the Grand Slam of 100's (silver buckling in all races), and the gruesome Leadman Series in one year. The race that changed Dion's life forever was a 155 mile ultra-race in the Chinese Gobi Desert when a stray dog ran with him, forming an unbreakable bond that would become the ultimate challenge of overcoming adversity to achieving the unachievable. Our running book of the month for February 2021 is 'Finding Gobi' by Dion Leonard. Our Char and Jak invite Helen from Caincross UK to discuss the book and talk all things running with your dog. About the book: In 2016, Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultra marathon runner, unexpectedly stumbled across a little stray dog while competing in a gruelling 155 mile race across the Gobi Desert. The lovable pup, who earned the name `Gobi', proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the treacherous Tian Shan Mountains, managing to keep pace with him for nearly 80 miles. As Dion witnessed the incredible determination of this small animal, he felt something change within himself. In the past he had always focused on winning and being the best, but his goal now was simply to make sure that his new friend was safe, nourished and hydrated. Although Dion did not finish first, he felt he had won something far greater and promised to bring Gobi back to the UK for good to become a new addition to his family. This was the start of a journey neither of them would ever forget with a roller coaster ride of drama, grief, heartbreak, joy and love that changed their lives forever. Finding Gobi is the ultimate story of hope, of resilience and of friendship, proving once again, that dogs really are `man's best friend.' This true story features co-author and ultramarathoner Dion Leonard who crosses paths with a stray dog while racing 150 miles across the Gobi Desert in China. The dog he later names “Gobi” unexpectedly runs for miles alongside him in the scorching hot desert. Gobi’s instant loyalty and love win over Leonard, a hardened Aussie man, and eventually turns him into a tender-hearted advocate for dog adoption. Co-author Borlase, a prolific and renowned memoirist, specializes in crafting dramatic, engaging stories and has collaborated with a wide range of people all over the world. Some of these include a two-time Grammy-winning songwriter, an Iranian refugee who spent four months in a Turkish jail, a female transatlantic rower, a World War II veteran, and a former Muslim woman who was one week away from becoming a suicide bomber. Leonard praises Borlase’s attention to detail that turns a simple memory into something that makes us feel we were there. “Craig turned words into gold.” QUOTE FROM BORLASE “What makes a good story? This week we are chatting with Dion Leonard, ultrarunner and author of the New York Times bestseller "Finding Gobi". Dion has received a lot of press for his book which is " the heartwarming story of Gobi, a stray dog he found on a race across the eponymous desert" which is something you need to check out, but he is also an incredibly accomplished athlete who has taken on some of the hardest challenges in the sport of ultra running. He jumped all in on this sport by running a handful of Stage Races around the world including the Marathon Des Sables and the Gobi March. In 2018 he finished second place in the Triple Crown of 200s, all three of Candice Burt's remarkable two mile races. Then in 2019, after winning the Delirious 200 miler in Australia, he decided to up the ante by participating in the "Leadman" and the "Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in same summer. That means he raced every endurance event in Leadville (both running and mountain biking) plus four of the biggest 100 milers. That has to go down as two of the craziest years an athlete has had in ultra running! In this episode we get into all of those stories as we explore Dion's growth both mentally and emotionally through pushing his limits. What drives him? What makes him persevere? How have his experiences shaped him into who he now is? Excited to share this one and honored to get to talk with Dion! He is quite inspiring and after you listen to him you will feel like you can go out and take on the world! BONUS: With this being the 200th episode of the show I felt like we needed to have an appearance from our very first podcast guest, my buddy Brady Manriquez. The railroad had only a flag stop at first, but when “Long John” Wentworth, a Congressman and future mayor of Chicago, got involved, then the railroad established a full stop in the town. At the time the name of the town was Newark Station and it became confused with it’s nearby southern neighbor, the town of Newark. Since Representative Wentworth had played a large role in convincing the railroad to have a full stop in the town, he was given the honor of naming the town. The Congressman selected the name Sandwich after the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in which he was raised. Interestingly, an ancestor of Wentworth, Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, established the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in 1763 naming it in honor of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, said to be the inventor of the sandwich. One of “Long John” Wentworth’s greatest, and often overlooked, accomplishments when he was a congressman, was to push for the border between Wisconsin and Illinois as it currently exists. There was a big push to have the Wisconsin border established at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, bringing the border to the southern edge of DeKalb county. This would have meant that Illinois would have no access to the lake, and Sandwich would lie in two states. If you have some little-known history about Sandwich, send it to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. I’ll read it on a future podcast and give you full bragging rights.   The Sandwich Weekly podcast, episode 2, activities and events from May 12 to May 23 Hello, this is the Sandwich Weekly podcast. I’m your host Robert and I’ve prepared a list of activities and events happening in and around Sandwich over the next two weeks. just a reminder that everything I mention in this podcast, as well as contact information, can be found in the show notes. You can view the show notes on your podcast player or on the web at sandwichweekly.com. Good news, the Sandwich Weekly podcast has been approved by Spotify. If you subscribe to Spotify you can listen to the podcast using the Spotify app or web player. Before I get to the event calendar I thought it would be fun to pass along a little-known historical fact about the city of Sandwich. Did you know that Bob Hope once headlined a benefit show at the Sandwich airport? The show was sponsored by Friends of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Aurora to raise funds to purchase a small plane for Father Tony Gendusa who was a missionary in New Guinea. The event also included a two-hour air show starring Jerrie Mack, the first woman to fly around the world solo in a single-engine plane. The show was emceed by WGN’s Eddie Hubbard. There were between 5,000 and 10,000 people in attendance that day. That’s pretty impressive when you find out that the date of the event was July 20, 1969 - the same day that the Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon. In fact, Bob Hope delayed his departure from Sandwich to watch the moon landing in the airport's administration building. If you have some little known historical facts about Sandwich, send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com and I’ll read them on an upcoming show (of course I’ll give you credit!)
