We have exciting book news! Jo's upcoming book "Eight Limbs of Aerial Yoga" is now available for preorder! As Jo explains with palpable excitement, this book is "a compilation of my life's work in aerial yoga." Her book is structured around Patanjali's Eight Limbs, drawing from interviews with experts, evidence based research and lived experience in a way that honours both tradition and innovation. She candidly shares how "I'd really like my book to kind of help to address some of that lack of in-person community" within the aerial yoga world. For those planning ahead, Jo's Bali retreat is also on the horizon, promising another opportunity to experience her teaching in that magical setting. In this episode we reach out to our podcast community and have some insightful questions from past guests including Jivana Heyman, Cyrille Caille, Dr Esme Dark, Chloe Prendergast, Nada Todorovich, Claire Holloway and Sasha Sigel. One of the most touching aspects of this episode is how Jo reflects on her podcast journey and its unexpected connection to her book writing process. "I do feel like the podcast has really paid me back with the book," she shares, highlighting how the relationships and conversations from the show have enriched her writing in ways she never anticipated. The generosity of their podcast community shines through as they discuss how past guests have become genuine supporters, creating what they describe as "that network of sharing." Many past podcast guests feature in the book, including Jivana Heyman who wrote an beautiful foreword. The conversation takes on a more reflective tone when they explore the delicate balance between teaching and learning in yoga practice. Jo's honest admission that "if I've done a training and I don't teach the things that I've learned in the training, they do not stay in my brain" speaks to a truth many yoga teachers will recognise. This vulnerability around the learning process, combined with their discussion about maintaining humility while teaching, creates space for a really meaningful exploration of what it means to be both student and teacher simultaneously. Their approach feels refreshingly honest in a field that can sometimes feel pressured toward perfectionism. Perhaps the most powerful moment in the episode comes when they tackle the challenging question of how to maintain inner peace while responding to global crises. Rather than offering simple platitudes, they dive into the complexity of staying grounded while remaining engaged with the world's pain. As they put it, "having the tools to find your own inner peace... can help you have the time and space to respond in a way that's thoughtful and kind." This perspective offers a practical framework for anyone struggling to balance personal practice with social responsibility, suggesting that inner work and outer action can actually support each other rather than compete. The episode wraps up with a delightful exploration of their unique work-life setup, running a yoga studio connected to their home. Their discussion about creative freedom - "if it's your own space, you can do more things just for fun that don't necessarily need to be profitable" - reveals the joy they find in their unconventional arrangement. Throughout this entire Q&A, what emerges most clearly is not just their expertise or accomplishments, but their genuine care for their community and their commitment to showing up authentically, even when that means admitting they don't have all the answers. "Dann kam Reiki (Energiearbeit) in mein Leben. Jo and Rane dive head first (figuratively speaking) into the world of inversions with Freya Bennett-Overstall, a respected chiropractor, yoga and meditation teacher, author, and a familiar voice on our podcast. Freya brings her unique perspective to the topic of inversions, delving into the "yin and yang" aspects of these transformative postures. In this conversation, we explore the benefits and considerations surrounding inversions, following Freya's recent introduction to our style of aerial yoga. Conversely, Freya has also shared her experience with the FeetUp trainer, a tool that offers a safe and accessible approach to inversion practices. Freya's expertise spans a wide range of disciplines, including chiropractic care, movement education, and a deep understanding of the body's intricate mechanics. With a holistic approach, she skillfully bridges the gap between Western and Eastern philosophies, providing a comprehensive understanding of the physical, emotional, and energetic aspects of inversions. As we delve into the "yin" and "yang" of these practices, Freya offers insights into the restorative and dynamic aspects of inversions, guiding us through the physiological, emotional, and energetic effects of reversing the force of gravity on the body. Her wisdom extends to safety considerations, contraindications, and the importance of gradual progression, empowering practitioners to explore these postures with confidence and mindfulness. Freya's passion for empowering students and cultivating a non-judgmental, playful atmosphere shines through, as she shares teaching strategies and effective communication techniques for guiding students through inverted postures. With her second appearance on our podcast, Freya once again captivates us with her depth of knowledge and commitment to promoting transformative movement practices. In the latest episode of The Flow Artists Podcast, we speak with Renae Stevens and Kristin Mathiassen. Renae Stevens is the creator of the Aerial Yoga Therapeutics training program, a pioneering approach that integrates the aerial hammock as a therapeutic modality for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. With a background in yoga, somatic practices, and mental health recovery, Renae has developed a unique methodology that bridges the mind-body connection through the versatile and supportive medium of the aerial hammock. Kristin Mathiassen, a trained aerial yoga therapist, specialises in working with individuals with disabilities, particularly those with Down syndrome. Her personal experience as a mother to a son with Down syndrome inspired her to explore the therapeutic potential of the aerial hammock and sensory-based activities. Kristin's expertise lies in creating safe, playful, and engaging environments that support the unique needs and abilities of her clients. The aerial hammock's "superpower," as described by Renae and Kristin, lies in its ability to provide a soothing, supportive, and sensory-regulating space for practitioners of all ages and abilities. Whether used for physical rehabilitation, mental health recovery, or simply as a means of exploring movement and body awareness, the hammock offers a diverse range of applications within the realm of aerial yoga therapeutics. One of the key strengths of aerial yoga therapeutics is its emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity. Renae and Kristin stress the importance of offering progressions, modifications, and grounding experiences to ensure the safety and engagement of participants with diverse needs and abilities. Instructors in this field must possess a deep understanding of the human body and the ability to adapt and facilitate sessions that cater to a wide spectrum of presentations. Renae is running a series of aerial yoga therapeutics training courses later this year. This is an opportunity to receive some of the best aerial yoga training available in the world with Renae and a whole host of experienced facilitators, including Kristin, as well as yoga luminaries such as Simon Borg Olivier. I'll be the first to say it. I had no idea aerial yoga was even a thing! Performing yoga poses, 3 feet off the ground in a hammock. First thoughts are: is there any need?Second thoughts of course: Should people bother with this?Is it that different to regular mat yoga? Something we also tried on the pod nearly 2 years ago, so at least we can compare. Whats the point in the hammock? Any added benefits? Just for fun? We're answering all these questions (also taking to Reddit to get some opinions) as well as talking about about our experience trying aerial yoga to let you know - is this something you should bother with? Liked this episode or have a suggestion for something we should bother doing? We'd love your review! Want to get in contact? Welcome to our podcast! Today, we have a very special guest joining us from Switzerland: Cyrille Caille. Cyrille is not only an occupational therapist, but also an aerial yoga teacher who has developed a specialized course for people with Traumatic Brain Injury. We were fortunate enough to connect with her through the Making Aerial Yoga More Accessible Facebook group, which was created by Jo to share inspiration, insights and questions about the more accessible and therapeutic aspects of aerial yoga. During our conversation with Cyrille, we delve into the various effects of Traumatic Brain Injury and how she supports her clients in navigating their new way of life. We also discuss the emotional impacts of these life-changing injuries, and how they can be a source of grief for both the person affected and their loved ones. Cyrille and her team are incredibly dedicated to their physically and emotionally demanding work. We learn how her own personal journey with aerial yoga led to the installation of aerial yoga hammocks at the rehabilitation center where she works, and ultimately to the development of her specialized course for Traumatic Brain Injury survivors. Join us as we gain insight into the amazing work of Cyrille and her team, and discover how aerial yoga can offer unique benefits for those who have suffered from Traumatic Brain Injury. In this episode we speak with Dr Kavitha Moahan, the author of Traditional Aerial Yoga, director of Aum Yoga Studio in Chennai Tamil Nadu India, a scientist, multiple world record holder and a recipient of the prestigious Yoga Kalaimamani award. While Kavitha has a strong physical practice, she sees yoga primarily as a path to self realisation and a way to achieve balance and peace within oneself, and focuses more on the therapeutic aspects of aerial yoga too. We were intrigued to learn more about how the Thottil, which is a traditional South Indian hammock used to soothe babies, to support deity statues in temples and even as part of funeral processions. This tool of emotional regulation and spiritual expression forms the basis of Kavitha's approach to aerial yoga along with her research focus from her science background and deep respect for the traditions of Yoga. Finding the balance between innovation and honouring tradition is just one of the topics we cover - we also talk about her time studying in Australia, pain science, body image, woman's health and some of the unique benefits of the thottil/aerial hammock. Welcome to Episode #41 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Aurélie Martin Scally, who goes by Lily, is yoga teacher who founded five yoga studios in Morocco onto the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast. She first founded Om Yoga Studios in 2013, and then founded the EPIC Festival in Marrakech in 2019. Since 2019, she also runs EPIC yoga teacher trainings in Morocco. Lily studied ashtanga yoga in Thailand, and Aerial Yoga with Cirque du Soleil artists. For her, a beautiful series of yoga is like a work of art, a mix of technique and intuition. My conversation with Aurélie Martin Scally, who founded five yoga studios in Morocco, was so incredible as we took a deep dive into the world of studio ownership and how to cultivate energy and spirit in multiple studio centers. We also discussed yoga as a way to find balance. The world isn't black or white, and yoga is a way to discover, see, and accept all the variations of color you have inside of you. What to expect in the Yoga In Morocco episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Aurélie discovered a Bikram yoga studio in Morocco, and after the death of her father, she found strength and solace on the yoga mat. The owner of that Bikram yoga studio, Nabil Scally, would soon become Lily's husband. After closing the Bikram yoga studio, Lily and Nabil founded Om Yoga Studios in Morocco, first in Casablanca and then later in Marrakech and Dakhla. They now own five yoga studios, and founded EPIC Yoga Festival and EPIC Yoga Teacher Trainings in Morocco, and available online— soon available around the world on their yoga world tour! During our conversation, Lily and I discussed what it was like to open a yoga studio in Morocco, and the advice she would offer to yoga teachers who hope to open their own yoga studios one day. Her main advice is to be careful to not get lost in the yoga studio area, keep your own personal practice strong and keep teaching. And to also be careful to not teach too much. It can be tempting to teach all-day every day, and also marketing, accounting, planning, and more— so many hats!— but to make sure not to burn yourself out. Curious? Tune into the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast to learn more about Lily, and about yoga in Morocco. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Morocco episode? I truly enjoy what it allows me in terms of strength, mobility, feminine power, and a solid workout. I also enjoy giving that to others. All ages, sizes, fitness levels. ALL ABOUT YOGA with Andrea Powers of Powers Yoga As part of a new series of Self Care Is My Job, the All About series, let's discuss all things Yoga with Andrea Powers of Powers Yoga. I met Andrea a few years back. She was looking for yoga instructor and I taught briefly in her adorable studio in Bergenfield NJ. Covid abruptly forced her to close down the studio, but luckily since then we have continued to work together. I have trained with Andrea in both Aerial Yoga and SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) Yoga. And this October, I will be joining her to co-teach an amazing Yoga Alliance Approved Yoga Teacher Training. Andrea's story is inspiring and interesting in that she was led to yoga through her spirituality, whereas many others are led to yoga for the physical practice and then later introduced to the spirituality. I believe Andrea's beliefs and gifts contribute to her skill as a both an amazing teacher and a successful entrepreneur. She is a joy to work with on all levels, so if you're interested in deepening your understanding of all aspects of yoga, start here! And then if you want more, we have something else in store! Dana and Larissa discuss their road to fitness in this inaugural episode. ---------- Dana Howells is an Abu Dhabi-based nutrition coach. She follows the practice of evidence-based nutrition. This involves using the best available nutritional evidence, together with clinical experience, to conscientiously work with patients' values and preferences to help find an approach that works for the individual. In addition to nutrition, Dana has an extensive background in both yoga and physical fitness. She earned her 200 hour YTTC in 2018 as well as her Level 2 and 3 Personal training certification in 2017. She continues to develop her passion of movement with certifications in boxing and kettlebells, among others. Dana casts a wide net to health and wellness with a dogma-free approach to healthing living. She strongly believes there is not one, but many roads to optimal health. There is room for everyone at her table. Larissa is a traveling yoga instructor currently based in Abu Dhabi. She came to her yoga practice initially trying to improve her physical abilities; she soon realized it was not only helping her physically, but mentally and emotionally. Yoga helped Larissa heal her anxiety, depression, and negative thought patterns. After establishing a consistent practice, she felt like she was brought back to her true self and knew that she wanted to share her experience with others. Larissa loves all forms of the yoga practice, but finds herself most at home teaching Hatha, Yin, Aerial Yoga, and Acroyoga. Using playful exploration and mindfulness to enable deeper understanding of our bodies, and build connection to the self and to others. She has been teaching since 2018 and continues her education on and off the mat every day.
