It's Acadiana: Out to Lunch

Some people build businesses on big ideas—others on big hearts. Sometimes, the best business plan is just knowing how to help people. Music might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to helping people, but for Vanessa Lomas, it’s her love language…or maybe help language. Vanessa is the owner of TheraCare Music Therapy. Ninety percent of TheraCare’s clients are autistic, have down syndrome or cerebral palsy. The idea behind music therapy is that it can help people express or cope with their feelings. That can be a powerful mode of connection, for instance, for people with autism. Vanessa is a military kid who’s lived all over the place. She landed in Lafayette in 2014 and has made it her mission to support people like her brother, who is autistic and nonverbal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from William Carey University and a master’s in music and music therapy from Florida State University. She is a Board-Certified Music Therapist and also specializes in neonatal music therapy. Vanessa is also involved with CYT and volunteers at her church’s children’s ministry. Roy Hebert knows a thing or two about business. He’s been in banking, finance, and the oilfield, and now he’s giving that knowledge away for free. Roy is a mentor with SCORE, a nationwide organization that helps entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses. A Kaplan native, Roy attended UL for both his undergraduate degree and MBA. His career spans decades in the financial sector, including roles in commercial banking, corporate finance, and consulting. Roy is an adjunct professor at SLCC, and that’s where he discovered SCORE, a program of the U.S. Small Business Administration. SCORE, an acronym for Service Core of Retired Executives is a free service that connects experienced business leaders with burgeoning entrepreneurs. Roy says his clients come from all walks of life and range in sector and scale. They could be starting a landscaping business or getting an oilfield service company off the ground. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. You can find photos from this show at itsacadiana.com.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She explains how her transition into motherhood helped propel her into the perinatal mental health field, and she highlights signs and symptoms, also known as “orange flags,” that are often missed in new moms. Ruthie shares how she incorporates yoga into therapy and how new moms can use yoga practices to manage daily stress and optimize their parenting. Despite being a therapist, Ruthie was caught off guard by the challenges of new motherhood and the juggle of parenting demands. This inspired her to pursue her certification from PSI and gain experience working with El Camino Hospital's MOM program, creating groups and providing care for struggling perinatal moms and their families. In her practice and her work, Ruthie draws from a variety of therapy modalities, including Experiential, IFS, Brainspotting, EFT-Tapping, Expressive Arts, Mindfulness, Yoga, and CBT/DBT skills. Ruthie's experience living in Russia, Israel, and the US has instilled in her a deep respect for cultural uniqueness, and she incorporates cultural strengths, creativity, and spirituality into her therapy work. Ruthie strongly believes that the best gift for a child is a parent who is striving for health, regardless of their imperfections.  Show Highlights: How Ruthie struggled with the “two sides of motherhood” How the birth experiences with her daughter and son were totally different for Ruthie How the guilt-driven decision to return to work at 6 weeks postpartum created the perfect storm of stress, guilt, shame, and irritability How Ruthie obtained the perfect job at the MOMS program at El Camino–and relished the healing environment there Why so many therapists and medical professionals miss the signs and symptoms of perinatal mental health issues How Ruthie found help and healing through yoga and psychedelic-assisted therapy Signs and symptoms of postpartum issues that are commonly missed in physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral categories How Ruthie helps others find healing and recovery through the 5 S's: sleep, sunshine, social support, self-care, skills, and spirituality How yoga helps connect the body and mind to bring healing How yoga nidra (a practice that can be done at home and for free) can help new moms who struggle with sleep deprivation Ruthie's takeaways: “I want to give hope to listeners that you are capable, competent, and skillful. While a lot of remedies focus on our thoughts first, somatic practices have us pay attention to sensations in our bodies to tune in to what it might be telling us. If you're stuck in a pattern of emotional eating, recognize that you're looking for safety in a time of stress in your body. Don't judge yourself or beat yourself up. Instead, look for other ways to give yourself that feeling of safety that isn't food related. As you're working through healthier coping mechanisms, you might feel some grief for your old source of comfort, and that's okay! Recognize that it did help you feel safe when you needed that, and have compassion for your inner child.   Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that's me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I am lucky enough to have traveled the world teaching yoga in seven different countries and living in five of them over the past few years. It was during this journey that I totally revamped my teaching style to go from 'traditional fitness verbiage' to ONLY cueing about the mental and energetic benefits of movement. During this episode we talk with yoga teacher, Anthony Prince, about how solitude, stillness and intentional pause practices can benefit Enneagram numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4. Anthony is a musician, a yogi, wellness coach, a mindfulness teacher, and personal trainer. An athlete most of his life, he first fell in love with yoga in 2014, but after taking a powerful yin yoga class on a bright New Year's Day in 2016, he realized there was more to it than the physical aspects. From then on, Anthony knew he needed to become a teacher and in 2020, as the world transformed, he received his CYT-200hr Yoga certification from Tough Love Yoga in Atlanta, GA. Through several years of self-development as an artist on the road, Anthony learned the importance of self-growth through self-love and compassion and incorporates these ideals in every aspect of his teaching. Since starting his journey through yoga, Anthony has made it his soul's purpose to commit himself to the service of others by providing wellness coaching through the lens of yoga as a foundation to uplift the spirit, encourage radical self-expression, address unaddressed trauma, and to create a new sense of balance in personal well-being. In this episode we're getting conceptual! Episode #42 explores an idea that is fundamental to living as sustainably as possible: keeping resources at their highest possible level of use. This conversation is with awesome return-guest Shelly Sommer, who lays out the principles of a circular economy and why we should be aiming for this important goal, within our making practices and beyond. Shelly schools us on all this with her usual fun and joyful approach, whilst also sharing many practical, actionable tips for how we might enact responsible stewardship whilst sewing. In particular, she talks me through her method for making ‘new' fabric from scraps, which is an approach I'm so inspired by and have been playing with ever since. Support the podcast over on Patreon!
