On this episode, Tomi speaks with a Great British legend Charlie Spedding! Today, Charlie walks us through his career as an athlete, all the way through to his career post-running. We talk about what got him started, his good races, his bad races and his best race ever! We talk about winning a bronze medal in the Olympics, we talk about his mindset and we talk about his physical and mental training to get to the top of the sport. Charlie really hones in on the importance of being mentally ready before racing when physical readiness (although important) seems to be the only thing that people focus on. This episode speaks to all athletes as Charlie is coming with experience, knowing what it takes to get to the top of the sport. Make sure you listen all the way through to get all of the pearls of wisdom that he shares! Charlie has been an inspiration to many athletes in the country and especially here in the North East, being from Bishop Auckland. His book - From First to Last: A Long Distance Runner's Journey from Failure to Success - has been recommended by numerous guests on this podcast and we talk about why and how the book was written, today. We hope you learn something, we hope you get inspired and we hope you Find Your Fire.

This week, your charismatic hosts Ben Handupme and We're Gonna Need Another Timmy discuss the season 3 episode of Dinosaurs titled "Swamp Music." Basically some white guys wrote a parable for cultural appropriation in rock music and they did a sloppy job about it. However, we do a slightly less sloppy job about reviewing said episode, so maybe you'll get something out of this messed up world we live in after all. Besides, maybe you'll enjoy the following talking points: the difference between Underoath and From First to Last, the late Norm MacDonald, satanic metal bands that won't commit ritual suicide, Ysa disrespecting our artist endeavors, Kermit the Frog replacing Justin Pierre from Motion City Soundtrack, and the fact that every band is actually just Sublime. And hey, guess what? Sinclairity will be performing a live episode this year at Pre-Fest in St. Pete, Florida. Part One: Chris Froment Presents “A Get Rich Eventually Scheme!” Welcome to the pre-Christmas episode of Hardly Focused! Jack, Fro, and Nate presenting this one. See if you can spot all the technical errors in this episode! Kicking off this episode, Fro explains how he’s making money by doing web searches using a Python script. He makes pennies per search, roughly equating to $1 USD per day. At this rate, he’ll be rich by the time he’s… many hundreds of years old. Elsewhere, Cyberpunk 2077 has been out in the wild for one week. Simply put, it’s launch has been a disaster, especially for PlayStation and Xbox users. As discussed during Episode 483, Jack and Kate are both playing on PC; the latter is having a much better experience. Part Two: Cyberpunk 2077, and the Era of Unfinished Video Games This segment begins with an impromptu guitar jam between Jack, Fro, and Nate. Rocking the banjo, Nate promptly breaks a string. Meanwhile, Jack attempts to serenade by playing Oasis and From First to Last. What year is it? Back to Cyberpunk 2077, Jack tells Fro and Nate about how Sony has delisted the game from the PlayStation Store. Moreover, Best Buy is accepting refunds of opened copies of the game, an unprecedented move in any retail setting. This leads Jack to rant about how modern video games tend to be released in unfinished states, eventually achieving completion over several years’ worth of updates. Part Three: Tom Cruise Has a Meltdown on the Set of “Mission Impossible” Nate kicks off the final segment of this episode by devouring chocolate with 92% cacao. Appropriately, it tastes like dirt. Jack equates the taste to an infamous scene from Nickelodeon’s Doug. Moving on to a bit teased all throughout this show, Jack features audio of Tom Cruise flipping his lid on the set of the new Mission Impossible film. Jack equates Cruise’s meltdown to that of Christian Bale’s public freak-out in 2008, and to a lesser extent, Dennis Quaid’s staged outburst in 2015. Fro and Nate see both sides to Cruise’s argument over COVID-19 safety, while Jack finds his rant to be justified. On a related note, Nate asks the room if they think COVID-19 has affected new music in terms of songwriting and content. Jack notes that blink-182 has a song all about quarantine, while Taylor Swift’s folklore was most definitely influenced by the lockdown. Jack is also attending his first “virtual concert” with Jimmy Eat World, which is going to be weird after decades of attending physical shows in the “before times.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hardlyfocused/support

Welcome to the podcast! Here, we do folktales. Here, we do colored people. Here, we... er--wait a minute... let me start over: “Colored Folklore” is a podcast that looks at folk tales that have gotten relatively little mainstream attention. Every other Monday, we’ll take a story from a different indigenous culture from all the globe, and give it a little bit of a modern make over. We’ll try to stay as absolutely true to the original tale as possible, but as any fairy tale studies student knows – the term ‘origin’ is extremely tricky. See, the New World may think fairy tale begins and ends with Disney, just as the Old World feels like it exists with Perrault, and Basile, and The Grimms. But... there’s so much more. To show you how much, every week, we’ll be dropping facts alongside our stories. From First nation North Central and South Americans to the Middle Eastern cultures of North Africa and the Mediterranean Basin, from the indigenous Artic cultures to the aboriginal Australian, Torres Straight Island, and Polynesian peoples, we’ll give you a weekly dose of folklore and facts. Because if there’s one thing this show is, it’s folklore AF. More Key Moments in California School Funding History: A View From Inside the Capitol

Adventures in Ed Funding

How did California slide into such a deep school funding hole, and how can we climb our way back up? These are among the questions we take on in this latest adventure with special guest Gary Hart. As a former state legislator, longtime Senate Education Committee Chair, and Secretary of Education, Gary offers the critical perspective of someone who was “inside the Capitol building” during a truly pivotal time in the early life of Ed Funding. He began his career as a classroom teacher before serving two decades in the state legislature at a time (1974-1994) when so many key events in school funding unfolded. What led to the dramatic disinvestment in California’s schools, beginning in the 1970s? Rising real estate values, bad economic times and a major change in the state’s demographics all contributed, according to Gary. He also reflects on whether there’s anything he wishes he might’ve done differently while in office to help change the downward trajectory of per-student funding. And what about Proposition 98? Former Sen. Hart takes some exception to characterizations that legislators and governors “manipulated” the Prop. 98 constitutional guarantee for schools, causing it to become more of a “ceiling” than a “floor” for per-student funding. “Ballot box budgeting,” he says, “is not a good system.” We also explore the sometimes shifting borders between how prescriptive the state used to be in telling local school districts how to spend their funds, and the relatively recent move towards more local control. As our adventure continues, Gary takes on the mountain that California faces to increase school funding to the levels needed to support all students. A more stable state revenue system must be identified, he says, especially so the state is not so disproportionately reliant on income taxes. Finally, we consider whether, at the end of the day, increasing school funding comes down to whether or not those currently serving in Sacramento truly have the political will to take it on.More ResourcesFor a terrific history of California’s school funding slide, we recommend the 2004 documentary, “From First to Worst” a production of the Merrow Report by award-winning journalist John Merrow. In his role as chairman of the Senate Education Committee (1983 to 1994), he wrote important education legislation concerning school finance, class-size reduction, and charter schools. He also served as the Secretary of Education for Governor Gray Davis. In addition, he has served on the board of directors for the Public Policy Institute of California for more than ten years, including as chair. In 1995, he founded the California State University Institute for Education Reform, a policy center focusing on elementary and secondary school issues. Would California schools actually be better off if Proposition 98 had never come into being? Why is it still so important to understand? And where do we go from here to fulfill the initiative’s promise of bringing state spending per student to the top ten among states? On this show, we’re big believers in the axiom that to get where you want to go, you need to understand where you’ve been. That’s why we’re making a special journey this episode into the recent history of school funding in California. Think of these as Ed Funding’s formative years. Our special guest Kevin Gordon, President of Capitol Advisors, helps us explore this history, including the mother of all state ballot measures, California's Proposition 98. The measure sought to lift California school spending to among the top ten states in the nation, but for many reasons, we’re still not there. When it appeared on the statewide ballot in 1988, Prop. 98 barely passed – by less than one percent of the electorate. What led up to the measure, and what impact has it had on education in the 30-plus years since, both good and bad? Kevin takes us through the politics as well as the intricacies of this notoriously complicated measure. To help break it down, Kevin also takes our “60 Second Challenge” to explain the basic mechanics of how Proposition 98 works.More about Proposition 98Approved by California voters in 1988, Prop. 98 established a minimum guarantee for school funding in the state constitution. It was intended both to be a floor that funding would never fall below, and a formula for ultimately growing funding over time to the top ten among states.“The problem,” Kevin says, “is as soon as it got implemented, the legislature was always trying to figure out, what does it take just to do the minimum – and once they do the minimum, check the box, we’re done. And that’s what happened: it became a funding cap instead of a funding floor.”Proposition 98 began 30 years of what the State’s Legislative Analyst Office later referred to as, “A plethora of tests and rules that govern the minimum guarantee.” Read the Legislative Analyst Office report, “A Historical Review of Proposition 98” from January 2017.More ResourcesFor a terrific (albeit sobering) history of California’s school funding slide, we recommend the 2004 documentary, “From First to Worst” a production of the Merrow Report by award-winning journalist John Merrow. #96: A Continent Named Coma

A Continent Named Coma is one of my favorite up and coming bands from Phoenix who plays a nostalgic blend of 2000s emo and post-hardcore revival with plenty of modern elements to boot. EP REVIEW: I'm not sure if 2000s emo is making a comeback, but if it is, A Continent Named Coma is at the helm.I grew up in love with bands like Senses Fail, From First to Last, Silverstein, and all the other legends under the Victory Records catalog and I often miss that sound. I've been surprised that sounds like Nu-Metal and Rap Rock have been on the uptick, but we've seemed to have left behind our studded belts and wristbands. If we're going to bring back the nostalgia of accessible radio metal, how the fuck are we not bringing back the sound of 2000s emo?The opening to the first track of this 3-track EP immediately coats you both with the warmth of sadness and bitterness of winter. It was like catching the scent of a past lover in the air and not quite being able to place it, but as soon as the entire band kicks into gear you recognize the familiarity exactly. The production is absolutely perfect for what they're going for and the vocals throughout most of the release are on point at every turn. From the desperate screams to the angst ridden clean vocals that are immediately reminiscent of From the Depth of Dreams, I just want to carry this record around like a blankie. The second track on the record, "Show Your Face" has a bit more clean vocals throughout with screams sprinkled here and there for added emotional turmoil. The dirty lead guitar that pushes us through the song is toned perfectly to fit the soundtrack of angst and confusion and the drums couldn't be mixed any better for the style. The third and final track, "Lachrymose" begins a little shaky with an opening that I'm not crazy about in any direction. The vocal range isn't the singer's strong suite and it feels a little awkward over the instrumentation. He spends a lot of the track going back and forth between what seems to be a more natural tone and a seemingly affected vocal style that I'm not too crazy about. The song seems to be searching for it's direction and personality throughout most of the track; finding it's way here and there, then getting lost again. The screaming vocals that come in near the end are as crisp as ever and return some much needed color. While there are a lot of nostalgic bands out there trying to bring something old back into the consciousness, my gripe is that they never seem to be doing anything new. They seem to make their own style a smorgasbord of pre-packaged cliches, but ACNC doesn't do that. They pull me back into sounds I haven't heard in a long time while also carrying their own distinct personality and character. All in all, I am newly obsessed with this band. I have no idea who is involved or where in AZ they're from, but I'm fucking in.6/10
