On Friday, July 28th, 2023, Beyond Repair headlined Indecision Records 30th Anniversary. This band is essentially an early Throwdown lineup with Keith Barney singing. Their set was an electric mix of the direction Orange County hardcore went in the mid-90s, and, as evidenced by the crowd's reaction, something special for all who saw it. At the start of the set, there was a "china cymbal handoff" between Chase Corum and the Beyond Repair drummer. While only 30 seconds in length, that cymbal, and what it symbolizes to the changing sound of Orange County Hardcore when Throwdown, Adamantium, Eighteen Visions, and other bands were actively on the scene is extremely important. So important that Chase and I sat down and dissected the "china cymbal handoff" for close to nearly 30 minutes. You're welcome. Cameron Miller vocalist of Orange County band Duhkha joins the pod for a unique and awesome convo. James Hart vocalist for Eighteen Visions is my guest today! James is one of the most memorable and charismatic frontmen in heavy music and was the first to bring rock and roll swagger to chaotic heavy music. We talk re-visiting old 18v songs, the thought process behind creating vinyl color variants and being on their own terms for creating their content. Given that Josh has already told the tales of being kidnapped in Egypt and playing one of the first shows that an American hardcore band in Kenya has played, I was worried that he might not have any stories left for me when he agreed to do this interview. Never fear. Josh delivers the goods - and this is probably the hardest I've laughed during any podcast that I've recorded. Josh has been a full-time touring musician with bands like Evergreen Terrace, Casey Jones, Stick to Your Guns and Eighteen Visions for many, many years. In his spare time, he often travels to countries with unstable governments. As such, he's accumulated a lot of hilarious stories. When Josh is in Chicago, he stops in at South Loop Strength & Conditioning to train, so it's always a treat to get to chat with someone who likes the two things that I like: heavy music and extreme fitness programs.
