We'll have over 350 trumpet mouthpieces, mutes, cases, Shires trumpets, and valve alignments. Graduating with a Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts and recognized as a presidential scholar at Berklee College of Music, Martinez's passion for the trumpet ignited at the tender age of ten. Under the tutelage of esteemed mentors such as Oscar Brashear, Clay Jenkins, Ed Carroll, Josef Leimberg, Van Hunt, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Rasheed Ali, Sal Cracchiolo, PhD. James Ford, PhD. Derrick Finch, Lee Secard, and Wadada Leo Smith, Martinez's artistic evolution was profoundly shaped, fueling not only his musical prowess but also his commitment to mentorship and education, fostering creative pathways for future generations. While often associated with jazz, Martinez's artistic palette is expansive, drawing inspiration from an eclectic array of genres including Hip-Hop, R&B, Neo Soul, Classical, and Soul Electronica. His collaborations with luminaries such as Anderson Paak, S.I.R., Iman Omari, Shafiq Husayn, Big Sean, Rasheed Ali and Ed Sheeran underscore his versatility and musical adaptability. Having graced prestigious stages from the Lincoln Center to the Playboy Jazz Festival during his early years as a trumpeter, Martinez's performances captivate audiences with their dynamic fusion of styles and infectious energy. His recent venture into production showcases a deep reverence for cultural icons such as, J-Dilla, Quincy Jones, Shafiq Husayn, Josef Leimberg, Rasheed Ali, 9th Wonder, and Madlib. As he prepares to unveil his debut album, "Lamad," Martinez showcases his work not only as a trumpeter and improviser but as a composer, producer, and arranger. Martinez embarks on a new chapter with his ensemble, "The Education," comprising a collective of exceptionally talented young artists from across Los Angeles. Through "Lamad," Martinez invites listeners on a sonic odyssey, where each track intricately weaves a narrative that transcends musical boundaries, reflecting his unwavering commitment to artistic exploration and innovation.

Artist Friendly with Joel Madden

On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Joss Stone. Back in 2003, Stone broke out with her debut album, The Soul Sessions, when she was 16 years old, which largely reinterpreted '60s and '70s songs. Since then, she's released eight other albums, received two Brit Awards, and won a Grammy for her cover of Sly and the Family Stone's “Family Affair” with John Legend and Van Hunt. In a conversation with Madden, Stone discusses coming up in the music industry as a teenager, her take on horror movies, and what creating a live album was like. In 1991, two British men shocked the world when they confessed to hoaxing all the famous crop circles found in England in recent years. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world to survive to the present day, and it remains a marvel of design and execution. Despite this, however, we know very little about its origins, or the purpose of its many peculiar features. Egyptologists generally agree that it was built as a Pharaoh's tomb, but specialists from a variety of different disciplines have shown it to be vastly more complex than other pyramids, and very different from other tombs, suggesting that it may have had some other function altogether. We've talked a ton of gospel here on Heat Rocks, but this episode marks the first time we've discussed a full gospel album on the show, and from none other than one of the very first gospel quartets, The Sensational Nightingales.  The group was formed in 1942 as simply The Nightingales, but it wasn't until 1946 and the introduction of the sensational singer Julius Cheeks when the band really began to hit their stride. The quartet still tours to this day, albeit with a slightly different lineup, but the soul and tradition of Southern black gospel music is alive and well.   Singer/songwriter Van Hunt joins us in the studio to talk about his personal connection to gospel music, the influence of the Sensational Nightingales, and how artists can make the move from gospel to secular music. Daniel March is an exciting new face taking his place amongst the independent soul music movement with his debut self titled album. Released October 17 in Japan via a deal with acclaimed label P-Vine and in Korea through Leaplay Records (Angus & Julia Stone, Brian McKnight) the 10 track long player showcases a rich blend of soulful sounds that is both lyrically refreshing and musically appealing.  The first single ‘Magic' from his latest release is a breezy, intoxicating slice of pop-soul produced by Daniel and Simon Cohen (Justin Bieber, Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy) that will be accompanied by an animated video by Isaiah FiftyFour Design in London. Splitting his time between London and Sydney, the well-respected multi-instrumentalist has been honing his craft working with the likes of Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and MC, Maimouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh (The Roots, Common), Chantae Cann (best known for her work with Grammy Winners Snarky Puppy and Foreign Exchange), Jordan Rakei, Wallace, Thandi Phoenix, Young Gun Silver Fox's Andy Platts and rising UK star Tiana Major 9 to name but a few.  Influenced equally by the likes of Prince and Van Hunt as he is the soulful acoustic work of Ben Harper and John Mayer, Daniel's organic early recordings took place in Atlanta, Georgia USA alongside the likes of Khari Cabral Simmons (Donnie, India Arie), acclaimed songstress Julie Dexter and Bugz In The Attic's Daz-I-Kue but it was his 2015 single ‘Nina' that saw him mentioned as one to watch in soul circles. In December 2017 Daniel followed up ‘Nina' with the single 'Falling For You' and a remix by Ashley Beedle through Ramrock records. ‘Falling For You' landed Daniel substantial airplay on UK radio such as Mi Soul, Solar, Jazz FM and BBC. Van Hunt, the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer has announced his fifth studio album The Fun Rises, TheFun Sets to be released May 5th via Nashville-based Thirty Tigers and Hunt's own label godless-hotspot. Like its predecessor - 2011's What Were You Hoping For?, which The New York Times hailed as "ambitious and exciting" - The Fun Rises, The FunSets is enticingly adventurous. Of the album Van Hunt states: ""The drive to create something new and different is what keeps me excited and engaged as an artist. It's the thrill of appearing with The Afghan Whigs at Coachella and then performing at a gospel quartet music special all in the same week. The excitement is in constantly evolving as an artist. It's how I got from my first album,Van Hunt (alternative soul, electro-funk music influenced by Prince and The Ohio Players), to my last album What Were You Hoping For?, which was Bowie-influenced, progressive rock and soul." Full of African rhythms, blues and funk, the new album is full of contemporary components often found in the music of St. Vincent, James Blake, Dev Hynes and FKA Twigs. "It is the history of Black- American music filtered through modern technology," explains Hunt.    Today you can hear the first single off the album "Vega (stripes on)," a percolating, lusty track that simmers with jangly Howlin' Wolf-style guitars closed with a short rhyme reminiscent of early Raekwon. As it was coming up to another birthday, I thought it would be a good idea to do a mix of some of the tunes that have shaped my life. Give it a listen and see what the songs do for you…. Blue Zone - Big Thing [By far one of Lisa’s Stansfield’s best tracks. It used to get played at loads of parties in Manchester in 1988] Sade - Sweetest Taboo [Oh my goodness, I love this track. When I was leaving Nigeria in 1986 to come back to Manchester, this song had just come out and at my leaving party; this got played about 10 times!] Amp Fiddler - I Believe In You [Everyone knows my feelings about Amp!] Young & Company - I Like (What You're Doing To Me) [This song is very special to me as Qool DJ Marv played this at my wedding and it is coming up to my 10 year wedding anniversary] Anita Ward - Ring My Bell [This is one of the first records my parents bought for me. I just love her voice and the syndrum noises] Luther Vandross - She's A Super Lady [I love Luther. Quality vocals. I remember playing this one once and a very respected DJ came up to me and patted me on the back for actually playing a Luther Vandross tune out that wasn’t ‘Never Too Much’. Plus as everyone knows, I LOVE slap bass!] Don Blackman - Never Miss A Thing [comes from a great album called Don Blackman and it’s never out of my record bag. Slap bass is a bonus on this tune too] Cameo – Candy [Classic tune from 1986. Wish I could get the dance moves that everyone does when it comes on!] Nuyorican Soul - I Am The Black Gold of the Sun [Very special tune this one. I love the version that Minnie Ripperton does but this one reminds me of the Electric Chair club night (RIP) in particular] Earth, Wind & Fire - In The Stone [Every EWF tune makes me happy but this one in particular puts a smile on my face. Love the way it starts, the middle and everything!] Van Hunt - Out Of The Sky [By far my favourite Van Hunt tune. I have others by him but when I heard my friend David McInerney play it out, I had to get it!] D’Angelo and the Vanguard - Betray My Heart [Love D’Angelo. This new album has taken me a while to get into but it is a grower nonetheless!] Elektrons ft Pete Simpson – Joy [Pete Simpson’s voice is angelic! I feel this tune is very deep and spiritual and means a lot to me. Plus, it was produced by the Unabombers]

Don’t forget to subscribe on Podomatic or iTunes and tell your friends that the LMG: The Soul Eclectics’ Mix, proves good music is still alive and well, if not always on the radio. The name Ilhame Paris alone says it all. In Arabic, the name “Ilhame” means “inspiration”.  When you are in the presence of Ilhame Paris, you’re not just drawn to her voice, or drawn to her by her incredible beauty, you are drawn by her intense spirit as a wonderful human being. Her love for life and passion for music is not only inspiring, but contagious.   Native of Paris, France and born of Moroccan blood, Ilhame’s musical diversity not only comes from her cultural background, her musical influence comes from a wide range of sources including R&B, Reggae, French Pop, and Jazz. Some of her songs are directly influenced by artists like Luther Vandross, Bill Withers, Rose Royce, and Bob Marley.  Two of Ilhame’s proudest accomplishments is doing very unique covers for the songs,“Waiting in Vain” and “I’m Still Waiting” originally created by Bob Marley. Ilhame not only honors the legend with an incredible cover of the song called “Still Waiting”, but she gives it a unique perspective by singing it in French and Arabic. That’s not all! Ilhame performs the song with Marley’s son, Ky-Mani Marley. Together, they create one of the most astonishing covers by the Reggae legend.   Ilhame’s debut album called, “Just Wish It” is filled with collaborations including Grammy Nominated R&B, Hip Hop, Electronica producer, Nicolay, and Shafig Husayn, who’s most notable work was a writer for Erykah Badu. Ilhame has also collaborated and recorded the songs with T3 of Slum Village and Rap artist, Big Pooh.  Having opened and toured for artists like Erykah Badu, Dwele, Van Hunt, The Roots, and Questlove, Ilhame is demonstrating she has the drive and ambition to do what it takes to become one of the greatest emerging artists of today. By now you know this show is about all things soulful. From time to time we have featured guest DJs, podcasters, and a healthy dose of international musicians with fierce showmanship! Today's Labor Day Special will help you whistle while you work. We feature the talents of Honey Soul...podcaster, dj, interviewer to the stars. I'm a fan of her podcast which has up close and personal interviews with newsmakers of the soul scene. Find Honey Soul at her homesite, iTunes, and Myspace.com.  Also, she is a regular DJ at Superstation ProjectVibe.net! Be sure to get all the downloads and support her wonderful work via donation and/or online purchase of artist's tracks! We proudly give to you the one and only Honey Soul..... COA   I'm a strong believer in making your own opportunities. In Oct. 2004 I created a site called honeysoul.com. Honeysoul.com's audience consists of a large number of loyal, soul music supporters who actually buy music (yes I know that's a strange concept but I'm not kidding, it still actually happens). In addition to honeysoul.com featuring my own mix of "radio blogs," full CD previews, videos, new releases, and headlines I am very proud of my interviews or "conversations" as I like to call them. I have had the pleasure of talking to Jaguar Wright, Dwele (twice), Wayna, Gaelle, Carmen Rodgers, Lina, Julie Dexter, Darien Brockington (twice), Syleena Johnson, Ladybug Mecca, Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), Jonz, Geno Young, Jon B, Anthony David, Goapele, Frank McComb (twice), Valencia Robinson, Eska, Javier, Esthero, Yewande, Joi, Ron Isley, Lisa Shaw, Van Hunt, Amel Larrieux, Kim Hill, Teena Marie, Donell Jones, Bilal Salaam, Sy Smith, Randevyn, Carol Riddick, Yolanda Johnson and Raheem Devaughn. Who's next? It may be you. If you're a soul artist making meaningful music, let's talk. -Honey-         Honey Soul
