Dr. M. Gabriela Torres, professor, chair, and associate provost at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, is a cultural anthropologist who teaches courses in Medical Anthropology, Global Health, Violence Against Women and Latin America and Latinx Studies.   Tune in as Torres and Diverse host David Pluviose discuss the future of health education and how she and her colleagues are launching a new series of faculty collaborations aimed at transforming health education at Wheaton and beyond.   The three-year project will expand the curriculum with new courses and teaching materials. In this episode, Gabriela Torres joins us to discuss how we can become anti-racist educators and do the work of inclusion within our classrooms. Gabriela is the Associate Provost for Academic Administration and Faculty Affairs and is a Professor and the William Isaac Cole Chair in Anthropology at Wheaton College. She specializes in the study of violence – particularly gender-based violence – and state formation. At Wheaton College, she teaches courses in Medical Anthropology, Global Health, Violence Against Women, and Latin America and Latinx Studies. Esta virtud también es la base para el desarrollo del pensamiento estratégico, que es la capacidad para disponer los recursos de tal manera que permitan alcanzar los objetivos empresariales, de la forma más rápida y eficiente. Este día te traigo la historia de Gabriela Torres, una joven mujer que siempre ha sido inquieta en lo que respecta a sus ideas y el poder ejecutarlas. Nadie se imaginaría que empezó vendiendo maquillaje lo que la llevó ahora a ser la CEO de Soluciones Informáticas de la empresa Roots Inc., la cual cofundó con un grupo de jóvenes. Es una de las pocas jóvenes certificadas en hackeo ético o Ethical Hacking en El Salvador que, entre otras cosas funciona para prevenir delitos informáticos. Gabby escogió dedicar su trabajo a un área que tiene poca participación femenina y esto es espectacular y no puedes perderte su historia. Ahora su empresa está diversificada, siempre en su área tecnológica, con un alcance de clientes no solo nacionales sino también internacionales, logrando también llevar el joven talento profesional de El Salvador fuera de las fronteras, a través de su empresa. Gabriela Torres se refirió a las declaraciones que realizó la precandidata a diputada nacional por la Ciudad de Buenos Aires de Juntos por el Cambio, María Eugenia Vidal, quien aseguró que no es lo mismo consumir marihuana en Palermo que en un barrio popular. "Fue clasista y confunde muchas cosas. No es lo mismo el narcotráfico que las personas que consumen, y no es lo mismo el consumo, el abuso de sustancias y los consumos problemáticos", sostuvo y agregó que "si el problema es la desigualdad, lo que hay que hacer son políticas que garanticen alimentación, educación y vivienda". "Hay una concepción muy liberal de que la pobreza es una condición natural", afirmó y consideró que las expresiones de Vidal discriminan la pobreza, y al mismo tiempo "frivolizan" los problemas de los vecinos de Palermo. Asimismo, recordó que durante su gobierno "Juntos por el Cambio desmanteló el SEDRONAR, al igual que el Área de Salud Mental de la provincia de Buenos Aires". "Es muy fácil decir algo clasista sin haber realizado políticas de inclusión que mejoren las condiciones de vida, y políticas de acceso al tratamiento de consumos", señaló. El divorcio emocional es el tipo de relación de pareja en la que, aunque ambos viven en el mismo domicilio, viven en mundos separados. La psicóloga Gabriela Torres (@gabrielatorres4) nos explica cómo superarlo

Gabriela Torres is a Professor of Anthropology at Wheaton College. She is also a co-director for her college's Center for Teaching and Learning. Gabriela's watershed moment was at the end of Spring Break when her college decided to keep the campus closed. She found that she didn't have many answers to questions students were asking. "I saw my students really processing something that in my own head, I hadn't begun to process myself. It was a cognitive watershed moment." Before COVID19, she noted that students of color and Latinx students were graduating with "some degree of trauma" after attending college. "Having seen that year after year," Gabriela decided it was something she needed to address. Following the murder of George Floyd, Gabriela helped call on colleagues to create a plan for action. Together, she and a team created a beginners guide for becoming anti-racist. Knowing there is an exhaustive surplus of literature available, Gabriela thought it best to launch a website that clearly organizes resources and support for faculty and staff. They put out the call, "Who wants to learn to be an anti-racist educator?" The workshop emphasized self-reflection and a commitment to action. She asks you, "How do you want to be an anti-racist educator?" If so, she encourages you to consider the ways you teach, the resources you use, and whether or not you acknowledge historical trauma. It's a lot to take on, but it can be done in small increments. Start with actionable, small change. When Gabriela thinks about the future, she's hopeful that this is the beginning of widespread, institutional change. She's fearful that people will not vote. She urges her students and community members to engage in civic society because it does make a different. But it is also one of the most heavily silted rivers of the world. As it courses down from the Bolivian Highlands in the months of December and January, half is water, half sand. This means it often causes flooding. Or, it changes course, failing to deliver water to those who depend on it. So in order to benefit communities, this is a river system that needs careful management, and a lot of human input to ensure the water flows. Compounding the fickleness of the Pilcomayo are 3 years of drought in the region. Gabriela Torres travels north from Asuncion up the course of the Pilcomayo during the dry season, visiting communities where the wildlife is dying and the economy under threat.
