A study published in 2021 found that 59 per cent of 10,000 young adults surveyed are extremely worried about climate change, with many experiencing negative effects on their daily lives. This phenomenon, termed "climate anxiety", is characterised by feelings of helplessness and fear due to the perceived enormity and complexity of climate change issues. In conjunction with IPS' annual flagship conference, Singapore Perspectives 2024, themed around the topic of youths, the sixth episode of the "IPS On Diversity" Season 4, delves into the psychological and emotional impact of climate change on young people. Host Liang Kaixin is joined by Melissa Low, a research fellow at the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions, and Darren Quek, Principal of Forest School Singapore and a climate activist. Melissa and Darren discuss their personal experiences with climate anxiety and the broader implications of this emotional state on society. The conversation touches upon the role of media in shaping perceptions of climate change and the potential impact of climate anxiety on future demographic trends, like decisions around starting a family. The discussion concludes with suggestions for addressing climate anxiety, including seeking mental health support, and engaging in community and grassroots activities. The episode provides insights into the emotional toll of environmental issues on younger generations and the need for mental health support in the face of climate change. The world of game programming might seem a million miles away from 'regular' programming. But they still have to deal with the same kinds of data, scale and concurrency problems that we're all familiar with in the software world. And that makes the gaming world an interesting place for new ideas - under the hood they're solving those same problems we face, but often with some novel ideas about the solutions. So this week we're off to the massive open world that is game development, to see what we can learn that might make lives easier in the non-gaming space. Joining us for that is Tyler Cloutier, the founder of Clockwork Labs. They're building SpaceTimeDB, a curiously-distributed database built to be the underlying platform for their new MMORPG, BitCraft. Digging down into the architecture of SpaceTimeDB, we pick Tyler's brain for nuggets of information on event sourcing, request/response vs. subscriptions, transactions, security and much more. All in an effort to make our programmers and data scientists' lives easier.--SpaceTimeDB: https://spacetimedb.com/BitCraft: https://bitcraftonline.com/“4X games” defined: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4XPlan 9 O.S.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_9_from_Bell_LabsTyler on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tylercloutier/Kris on Twitter: https://twitter.com/krisajenkinsKris on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/krisjenkins/Kris on Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@krisajenkins--#programming #podcast #softwaredevelopment #software #gamedev #gamedevelopment

Looking to create a unique, real world experience for students? Could interdisciplinary collaboration be the solution? In this episode Professor Shirantha Beddage chats with FMCA Professors Eva Ziemsen, Umer Noor and Matthew Mazza about their award winning collaboration that brings together Film and Multiplatform Storytelling students with Game Programming students. Professors Ziemsen, Noor and Mazza discuss how the interdisciplinary collaboration evolved into a successful and exciting learning experience for faculty and learners. This innovative project introduced creative film students to game programmers, and challenged them to collaborate on a virtual production. A true first for all involved. We hear how the project took the professors' teaching practice to another level, and what faculty members learned from each other along the way. This collaboration is a powerful example of what makes Humber an innovative leader in Higher Education. http://www.shiranthabeddage.com Introduction to a Collaboration Between FMST and Game Programmers https://vimeo.com/656331424 3D Creation Tool https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US Perforce https://www.perforce.com/matthew-mazza

I'm not really a big gamer, but lately, I've fallen down this rabbit hole into the world of Casey Muratori, and this project that he started on Twitch in 2014. He is building a video game from scratch and explaining it all as he goes along. Casey is a professional video game and game engine, creator. He has been doing it for over 30 years. His approach to development feels a little bit like it's from the 1970s. Yet, it resonates with many smart people who are learning how to truly build things and understand fundamentals from Casey. Casey has a lesson about learning and teaching for us all. Episode Page

In this episode, NEXTcast producer Kristin Valois speaks to Geoff Lachapelle—Humber's eSports coordinator and a lecturer in the Game Programming program—about the educational value of competitive gaming.
Last week, we talked about this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, and the collective lack of enthusiasm for it. Could this year’s SB commercials and post-game programming save the entertainment aspects of Super Bowl LIII from being a big, dull dud? Well … With 100 million viewers every year, the Super Bowl is the one telecast networks and advertisers can be sure we’ll be watching. Even after the game is over, a big percentage of the audience is willing to stick around for a series debut or a big, often guest star-packed episode of an existing hit series … remember the debut of The Wonder Years after Super Bowl XXII? Or that post-SB XXX Friends installment featuring Julia Roberts, Chris Isaak, Jean-Claude Van Damme and waaaay too much storyline revolving around Marcel the monkey? But the history of Super Bowl lead out programs is also littered with plenty of flops and odd choices. One year, NBC filled its post-Super Bowl real estate with an episode of CHiPs. A repeat episode of CHiPs. And this year, we’re getting the premiere of the James Corden-hosted talent show The World’s Best (or, as we’re unaffectionately thinking of it, World’s Got Talent). If that Super Bowl lead out won’t keep us entertained while we nosh on what’s left of the snack stadium by that point of the evening, maybe this year’s commercials – the one time advertisers can be sure we’ll actually watch them – will give us another classic like Mean Joe Greene’s Coca-Cola spot, those Betty White and The Brady Bunch gems from Snickers, or something (anything!) involving Budweiser, a horse, and a puppy? Betty, Bradys, beer, and yellow Labs…save us, you’re our only hope.

This week's question is from Joseph F., who asks "I'm a high school student considering a career in game programming or design. I'm trying to learn C++ on my own with no background knowledge of programming and I wondered if you could recommend any tips for learning game-specific coding. My school doesn't offer anything code related until junior or senior year and I'm having trouble knowing where to start.
