Gander app was developed in relation to food waste at smaller retailers - the founders of the app wanted to connect people in real time to reductions on items in shops close to them - what a great idea! Stacey recommended "The Green Grocer" as his food book and also mentioned "The Cranks cook book" He would drink a crispy cold Devon Red cider whilst reading it and he has nominated Harriet Lamb from WRAP as a future guest.

For years, émigrés from the former Soviet bloc have been telling Rod Dreher they see telltale signs of "soft" totalitarianism cropping up in America--something more Brave New World than Nineteen Eighty-Four. Identity politics are beginning to encroach on every aspect of life. Civil liberties are increasingly seen as a threat to "safety". Progressives marginalize conservative, traditional Christians, and other dissenters. Technology and consumerism hasten the possibility of a corporate surveillance state. And the pandemic, having put millions out of work, leaves our country especially vulnerable to demagogic manipulation. In Live Not By Lies, Dreher amplifies the alarm sounded by the brave men and women who fought totalitarianism. He explains how the totalitarianism facing us today is based less on overt violence and more on psychological manipulation. He tells the stories of modern-day dissidents--clergy, laity, martyrs, and confessors from the Soviet Union and the captive nations of Europe--who offer practical advice for how to identify and resist totalitarianism in our time. Following the model offered by a prophetic World War II-era pastor who prepared believers in his Eastern European to endure the coming of communism, Live Not By Lies teaches American Christians a method for resistance: • SEE: Acknowledge the reality of the situation. • JUDGE: Assess reality in the light of what we as Christians know to be true. • ACT: Take action to protect truth. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not By Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance. This weeks episode is the Crime Classics presentation, The Shockingly Peaceful Passing of Thomas Edwin Bartlet - Green Grocer. This episode aired June 22, 1953, on the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS). Thomas Edwin Bartlett, was allegedly poisoned by his wife, Adelaide Blanche Bartlett, in the Pimlico district of London. A fatal quantity of chloroform was found in Mr Bartlett's stomach, despite having not caused any damage to his throat or windpipe, and no evidence of how it got there. Adelaide Bartlett was tried and acquitted for her husband's murder. By the jury's own statement in court Mrs Bartlett's acquittal was partly secured because the prosecution could not prove how Mrs Bartlett could have committed the crime. Hannah MacInnes joins Richard Walker, Managing Director of Iceland Foods and Author of the book, 'The Green Grocer' out April 2021, on The Klosters Forum Feed & Flourish Podcast series, to discuss the topic of biodiversity and ways in which we can transform our food systems in order to positively preserve our planet.
Sharon Fitzpatrick's and her sister Paula normally cater for movie stars, musicians and corporates, but during Covid their business has suffered. As they wait for things to return to normal, they and their staff have written a book ‘Party Party’ and have created a hamper business too called The Green Grocer’s Daughter.
Have we over estimated the deadliness of covid? So doctors seem to think so. Is the cure worse than the disease? The GREEN GROCER—the ultimate cure. A recent article and study by John Hopkin's University demonstrates that COVID 19 has not attributed at any excessive deaths in America. In fact the death rate has not changed year over year as a trend. Have we over reacted and is the "cure" for covid in fact worse the the affect of Covid it self? The response to COVID across the globe has been one of fear, control, and totalitarian power grabs—allowing strip club, bars, and alcohol stores to remain open but closing churches, synagogues and mosques and school. Is it wise? Or are we living in fear? Another episode from the popular historically accurate series of "Crime Classics" directed by Elliot Lewis and starring Lou Merrill as our narrator, Thomas Hyland. Every effort was made to make these dramatic re-enactment of historical crimes accurate to the actual crime. Writers did hours of research on in old newspapers, court records, history books, etc. to ensure everything about the story, including dialects, music, etc. was appropriate to the period of the time the crime was committed. This program aired on June 22, 1953 and involves the marriage of a 16 year old girl to an elderly man... and what happens when she finds him boring and is being tutored by a much younger school master who has a background in chemistry! More stories like this are in the "Crime Classics" Playlist.

057 Fern Albertson—The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum—Feeding Body and Soul Do you have an interest in plants, gardening, bees, butterflies, children, sharing your knowledge, working with like-minded people, having a meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunity? Check any of the above, and this interview is for you! Fern Albertson volunteers with The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, where she has found all of those interests fulfilled and her soul fed. Have you eaten a Honey Crisp apple lately? Or perhaps you’ve tried the new First Kiss apple. Both of these, along with 28 others, were developed through the research at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. The history of today’s 1200-acre premier facility had its beginnings in the 1800’s with government assistance and insistence to develop apples hearty enough to grow despite the Minnesota winters. The push was to attract settlers to the area by providing a viable economic opportunity. Today’s Arboretum now attracts 500,000 visitors each year! Thirty-five thousand of those come specifically to the Learning Center, where Fern volunteers. As a volunteer, she works most often with school children and children coming in the summer through the Y or Parks and Recreation day camps. Working with a curriculum that also meets state education standards, Fern, along with other volunteers has been teaching the children about bees and butterflies, as they observe the resident pollinators at work in the gardens of the Arboretum. She also takes children “shopping” at the Green Grocer. If their grocery list includes sugar or chocolate, for example, the young shoppers have to find the plant sources (sugar cane and cocoa plant) growing there. The lists are varied, but the lesson is pointed: Our food comes largely from plants! The Arboretum’s educational programs change regularly, inviting return visits and keeping the volunteers engaged as they too continue to learn. Fern is one of 900 volunteers the Arboretum relies on. Some, like Fern, lead programs or give tours; others help maintain the gardens or drive the trams. Several assist the researchers—like the ones who developed Honey Crisp and gave us our First Kiss! Arboretums and botanical gardens are scattered all across the nation. Click Here for a list of facilities around the country. You might find a garden or arboretum in your local area where you can check volunteer opportunities. Website: arboretum.umn.edu Facebook: facebook.com/MnArboretum

This week we are aiming to share some slightly different insights, and reveal some major news in the world of Financial Services in Ireland! Last week the Central Bank released a proposal which is due to come into force next year (subject to Dept. of Finance), which is aimed at maximising the protection consumers get when it comes to buying any financial products....we have dissected all the Publications released by Central Bank to determine the details, and it's an interesting one! Firstly, thanks for checking out Ireland's award-winning Financial Planning Blog & Podcast, we're delighted to have you join us. We'd be thrilled if you had the time to check out our 'why', and to learn a little about what we are trying to do, for you our reader. The Green-Grocer! Indulge us for a few moments, trust me it'll make sense shortly! Imagine that you are walking down the road after getting off your bus from work, and you notice a shiny new green-grocer shop on the corner. It's called 'Gerry's Independent Stores'...sounds good to you! You walk in and the friendly green-grocer welcomes you with a big smile, a warm welcome, and inquires as to how he can help you.....you are taken aback at his hospitality and part of you reckons 'I'm gonna be sold something here'....therefore you reply in the usual way and state that you are 'just in for a look'! The shelves are stacked high with produce, so much choice of all your staple items, different versions of everything......you are confused with the level of options and so ask for some help with regards picking the 8 items you actually do need, milk, bread, broccoli, ham, cheese, yoghurt, apples & grapes (you healthy divil you!). Before you know it the kind shop keeper picks out a version of each of the 8 items, in addition he tells you that he has a special rate going on the eggs, asparagus, Mars Bars, and Ice-Cream and he encourages you to buy those as well. You reckon that you actually probably could use these other items so you agree to buy them. You go to the counter, pay for your stuff and happily head on off home with your shopping for the next few days done, and away home to make the dinner! How Did The Green Grocer get Paid? It is only the next day that you hear from a mate that the Green-Grocer actually makes more profit on certain options than on others. He picked the options for you that result in him getting the most profit. He also invited you to buy more stuff, because it turns out he gets a large bonus from the provider of the eggs, asparagus, Mars Bars and Ice-Cream if he sells a certain amount of it. In fact, he actually also get a holiday every year if he sells certain amounts of it to his customers. He might also actually get support to pay for advertising and marketing if he agrees to only sell that particular producers product....how do you feel now? Some people might feel like that is what they expect, others might not care less, while others might feel that they were being encouraged to take and buy stuff that might not have been the things that they needed or wanted! Again, how would you feel? How Are Financial Advisors Paid? It will be no surprise to majority of you to hear that most Financial Advisors & Intermediaries, Banks, Brokers are paid in a similar way. Majority of Brokers, Banks & Advisors (also known as Intermediaries- i.e the seller of products on behalf of a product producer) get paid commission when they sell a certain product. It is also known that some get paid more for selling a certain product, and indeed get paid bonuses if they sell a certain amount of certain products from certain providers....all very certain!! It appears to us that the Central Bank are on a mission to increase the transparency that you the consumer has in regards how your 'Green-Grocer' is paid by the providers. In fairness that makes total sense. As we keep banging-on-about here, the focus of the industry has for too long been lazered onto selling products as opposed to delivering the real outcomes that consumers need and want....more often than not a product is required, but it should not be the starting point of the conversation! What Will Change For You, The Customer? In essence what the Central Bank appear to be aiming towards is a situation where there is a full and clear menu available to the customer as soon as they look up the 'Green-Grocer' online....you the customer will be able to see exactly what the grocer is paid from each provider, in advance of you actually going into the shop. The impact of this would be that the next time you go into 'Gerry's Independent Stores' you will know how much Gerry will make if he sells Brocolli A, Brocolli B, or Brocolli C.....again all about improving the transparency for the shopper. Also, when it comes to mortgages, the Green-Grocer is currently paid a % of the loan that the customer takes out (Green-Grocer being bank/broker/any intermediary), so the more you borrow the more commission the grocer gets.....well they are looking to put an end to that it seems, by introducing a cap on commission which the grocer gets, irrespective of the amount being borrowed....again our take is that The Central Bank are aiming to reduce the chance of a consumer being 'given' more of a loan than they need, which would mean that the grocer gets a bigger commission. Them days appear to be at an end. Is Gerry Independent?? As you have heard, Gerry's store is called 'Gerry's Independent Stores'......however if you are looking at how he is getting paid and the bonuses he can make by selling more product from a certain provider etc, then you could argue that he is not independent! If the Central Bank's recommendations come into force in full next year Gerry will have to remove 'independent' from his store name! The Central Bank appear to be very keen to ensure that only a grocer who is receiving no form of commission from a provider can class themselves as independent. Meaning if you go to an independent store once these recommendations come into force that you will have to pay out of your own pocket for the advice and recommendations. If they do state that they are not chargin you commission but that they are charging you a fee, which is being paid to them out of your products, via the provider, this will be classed as not being independent from the provider, and hence not independent in nature. How Can I Get Independent Financial Advice in Ireland? In simpler terms only a grocer who does not take commission of any sort, whose only income is the income he or she gets from charging a fee directly to the customer, will be able to call themselves independent under the new Central Bank recommendations. That is quite different to what is and isn't classed as independent in today's world of financial advice! If you think about it it makes lots of sense to only allow an advisor who is totally, financially and otherwise, independent of the product provider to be able to call themselves independent...... How Will This Impact On Us Getting Financial Advice? Some are saying that it might reduce the number of financial advisors in the country. Others are saying that financial advisors who typically have lots of providers to choose from will reduce the number of providers to just 1, so as to remove the need to choose between different ones based on something other than the commission. Others say that it will open consumers eyes to the level of commissions that are being paid, and will disillusion them about financial advice altogether. The last point, from our perspective would be a huge shame. The benefit of true financial advice and financial planning is usually way way beyond the cost associated with it. The avoidance of huge mistakes, the putting in place of plans which support your long term goals and lifestyle aims is worth so much more than the cost, again usually! We, for what it is worth, hope that the impact will be the rise of much more customer focused approaches from more and more of the industry. If that happens, and much like the investment markets nobody knows, then the recommendations will have been a rampant success. We're hoping. Thanks for reading. This week’s Feast Yr Ears features the incredible story of Franco Lania. As a troubled teenager trying to find his way, Master Chef Franco Lania says, “food saved my life”. Freshly out of high school, Franco’s father took him kicking and screaming to Kings Supermarket in Short Hills, New Jersey for a job. By the second week, Franco was enjoying his training where he discovered flavors and tastes that he never in his wildest dreams knew existed. Franco started to come alive. Through that job, he slowly but surely fell in love with food. Not only did he want to taste new things like ambrosia salad, he wanted to learn how to make them. Franco found his passion from which he later created the philosophy,“as you design your dishes and design your meals, you can design your life.” And design he did. Franco made his way to Le Cordon Bleu in London where he graduated with the_ Grand Diplôme_. Franco wanted to continue his quest for knowledge, so he attended the Master Course at the Italian Culinary Arts Institute in Costigliole d’Asti, Italy. Upon finishing his education, Franco’s culinary talent earned him the Sous Chef position at a new restaurant, slated to open in New York City. The job required that he take the Department of Health test for a food handler’s certificate. Franco arrived early at the World Trade Center on that beautiful, but tragic morning, September 11, 2001. Franco escaped, but the restaurant opening was delayed, and thus began a series of professional and personal hardships that sent him to the base bottom of his life. Franco could not even begin to think how he could move forward with his life, which left him subsisting on Pringles and orange soda. After a move to Miami, Franco took a job at a small Italian restaurant on South Beach that served delicious, simple food. He started to feel a nourishment that he had not felt in a long time. Franco was able to start orchestrating a plan. He realized his brain needed real food. Basic pasta. Chicken with onions. When he would make his chicken and onions dish, he discovered it was like therapy. The mouthwatering aromas enlivened him. He felt that he could face life again. Not only did the cooking act as therapy, it nurtured him. He carries that inspiration inside of him, and he shares it with his thousands of fans across the globe. Franco’s journey has brought him to the stoves at some of the most highly-acclaimed restaurants in the United States as well as Europe: La Grenouille, New York City; River Café, Brooklyn, NY; Pinot Bistro, Studio City, CA; Blue Door, Miami, FL; Dorchester Hotel, London, and the two Michelin-starred Sadler, Milan, Italy. His love for travel and cuisine lured him onto luxury cruise lines. On Oceania Cruises, whose culinary department is headed by the world-renowned Jacques Pepin, Franco was the first American to hold the Italian Chef position. He frequently appears as a guest chef on Celebrity Cruises’ transatlantic crossings. Through his unique experiences, Franco has attained the “marquee level” of a Certified Culinary Professional on land and at sea. Currently, Franco explores New Jersey’s diverse food culture through his show, Jersey Gems, airing on HomeTowne Television (HTTV); he is often the “Green Grocer” for their evening news. He is a member of the Culinary Advisory Board for ConAgra Foods. Franco has appeared twice on The Food Network’s 24-Hour Restaurant Battle. Chef Franco Lania now travels the world teaching people about the joy of food, cooking and how it has changed his life. He headlines conferences, is a celebrity chef at private events and represents large food brands for culinary demonstrations.

How much are you . . . ” He’s looking around a small little store and said, “How much you gonna buy?” I’m like, “15, 20 wheels.” His eyes popped in the back of his head. He says, “Well, you know they make a 400-pounder.” I’m like, “Well, I’ll buy a 400-pound wheel.” I know I’m gonna sell it. Right? I know I’m gonna sell that many pounds of this one cheese. I’ll buy a 400-pound wheel of cheese. Dave: How many people do you know with that kind of confidence? I can surely think of one — his name is Peter Lovis, owner of The Cheese Shop in Concord, Massachusetts. But even with Peter's confidence, that doesn't mean there haven't been moments of doubt. Today, you'll hear from Peter as we explore how he got started in the cheese business, the day he thought he made his biggest mistake, and how he pushed through to continue to grow his business. More than fifty percent of small businesses fail within the first five years. These are the stories of those who beat the odds. My name is Dave Charest and I'll be your host as we share the stories of some of the bravest people you'll ever meet, small business owners. You'll hear how they got started, their biggest challenges, and their dreams for the future. Dave: When you first meet Peter, you can see you're meeting a man in his element. Half cheesemonger, half magician — he is the Willy Wonka of cheese. Standing behind the counter, handing out generous samples, those of us waiting in line, hold on to our numbers tightly as if we're clutching our very own golden tickets. Watching him in action, I wanted to know how he first got started. With almost 40 years in the cheese business, he remembers his first day like it was yesterday. Peter: Well, I wanted a job. So I went downtown to the Green Grocer in New Jersey, Green Grocer and hardware store and deli and cheese shop and asking people if they’d give me a job. I was 15 years old. My first day was October 16, 1976. I just loved it. I’m still in touch with Mr. Knowles. He’s a great guy. He’s 90 this year. Dave: Mr. Knowles was Peter's first boss, and is still the inspiration for a lot of Peter's own management style. Throughout our interview, Peter brought up a few lessons he learned from Mr. Knowles early on. Peter: So, I started in October, October ’76. February of vacation week, 1977, February ’77, I hadn’t even worked there for six months. I was not even 16 years old yet. He said to me, “My wife and I are going to St. Bart’s for a week. Will you take care of the store?” So I was 15 years old. I had the keys to the store. I ran the store all by myself, all week. Peter: Because of that investment that he put into me, that really drives that inspiration to continue to invest in young people and frame them.
OREGON CITY, OR - On a recent trip to Clackamas County for another bike video I'm working on I came across Tim Dugan with Classic Cycles and his free green bikes. He and Green Grocer have teamed up to provide the free bikes for residents and visitors to Oregon City's downtown. It's a great program which should give folks one more reason to explore the historic first city of Oregon.
