Last year, Corbu managing director Samuel Rines came on Odd Lots to discuss what exactly companies were saying about why they were raising prices. His argument was that in the post-pandemic environment, with all its associated peculiarities and one-off disruptions, businesses were pursuing a strategy of "price over volume" (POV) to boost their profit margins. Since then, the idea of corporate profits contributing to inflation has gone viral, with the Biden administration repeatedly admonishing companies for price-gouging. In this episode of Lots More, we discuss the latest earnings season and what it's telling us about prices right now. Rines argues that the POV strategy is petering out in favor of companies maintaining prices and preserving margins ("Price and Margin") and even beginning to boost their volumes. We also talk about recent job cuts and layoff announcements.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My guest this episode sees several things simmering beneath the surface that suggest the economy may not be as weak as many believe. When inflation spiked last year, companies responded by raising their prices. As price pressures started to ease, companies opted to prioritize pricing over volume. The move made perfect sense, says Samuel Rines, Managing Director at Corbu, LLC, as pricing helped maintain margins. It's a strategy he has dubbed “price and margin” (PAM). And as input costs retreated and prices stayed steady, the money fell to the bottom line. It's one of the things that kept him bullish in the face of widespread bearishness early this year.

Despite little progress from the Fed, he notes that equities signal a different outcome from bonds, which indicates an impending recession. The panel then engages in a deep dive, discussing the possibility of the Fed relenting on inflation, the duration of the H4L phenomenon, and the role of the labor market in shaping its trajectory.Sam Rines then shifts the focus to Earnings, highlighting key trends in the First Republic and Kimberly Clark stocks, including a decline in Price Over Volume. The panel also touches on the tech industry, analyzing its current position and outlook. Finally, Josh Young explores the intriguing topic of Refining Margins, with a particular focus on the US and China dynamics that have contributed to Valero's strong earnings report. The persistence of inflation is a bit of a mystery to economists. Many of the shocks of the last few years have faded. And the Fed has raised rates aggressively, with seemingly only a modest impact. So why are companies still raising prices? If you listen, they actually explain a lot of their reasoning on corporate conference calls. On this episode of the podcast, we speak with Samuel Rines, managing director at Corbu, who has gone through numerous transcripts and come to the conclusion that management teams are still being rewarded for "price over volume" strategies. Companies in this environment are happy to sacrifice a bit of volume sales in order to keep moving through large price increases. He walks us through what he's learned from companies like Wingstop, Tractor Supply, and PepsiCo. And he talks about what you should expect to see when the inflationary urge finally starts to crest.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
David is joined once again by Renè Aninao, a macroeconomic and foreign-policy analyst at Corbu, a leading Wall Street research firm. The conversation is not for the faint of heart, but they talk a bit about 30 years of post-Cold War market reality and the current reality in the Ukraine. When all is said and done, you will have a better understanding of how financial markets intersect with geopolitics, the opportunity staring President Xi in the face, and the unlikely beneficiary of it all. Furthermore, it will be clear how all of this is an economic story -- a lesson Jerome Powell has understood for over a year now.

Learn more about CI Futures: https://www.completeintel.com/futuresThis Week Ahead episode discusses the current state of the Chinese economy and its potential trajectory in the future, with experts Leland Miller, Mary Kissel, and Samuel Rines. In this episode, the panel discusses China's gradual reopening, China's place in the world, and the Chinese Communist Party's economy. Leland Miller, who leads China Beige Book, talks about China's Great(ish) Re-opening. He notes that the reopening has been a gradual process and not as quick as some had claimed it would be. He raises the question of when we will see China really break out, whether it will be after the Lunar New Year/Spring Festival or later. He also discussed what activity we should be watching to know that China is really back to normal, such as investment, hiring, etc. He concludes by commenting on what a "normal" Chinese economy will look like in 2024 and beyond. Mary Kissel, from Stephens, leads a discussion on China's place in the world. She notes that with confirmation that China's population has already peaked, there seems to be a subtle reassessment of the "China opportunity." She points out that there is a very different view of China from the European perspective vs the US perspective. Europe seems to be growing closer to China while the US seems to be pulling back. She also shares how US-China relations will change as China normalizes and whether US companies are really moving out of China. She also discusses the push-and-pull factors that influence these decisions and if US companies will be complacent and stop moving to manufacture elsewhere after the slower opening in China. Samuel Rines, from Corbu, leads a discussion on The Party's economy. He notes that under Xi's leadership, we've seen the Chinese Communist Party return to a more involved role across Chinese society. He shares if the government will be more assertive toward businesses - both domestic and foreign businesses - in a post-Covid world and if that could impact how foreign investors view investments in China. He also mentions recent central government intervention in several sectors, most notably tech and real estate, and asks how involved the government will be in the repair of the real estate sector and protecting the tech sector. He also shares that if given renewed government involvement as well as factors like population and economic slowdown, we expect these sectors to return to rapid growth anytime soon. Finally, the panel members share what they are thinking about China that they're not sure most people see. Key themes: 1. China's Great(ish) Re-opening 2. China's place in the world 3. The Party's economy This is the 50th episode of The Week Ahead, where experts talk about the week that just happened and what will most likely happen in the coming week. Today's episode walks into a neighbourhood of wonderful Modernist villas in the chic western residential arrondissement of Paris, the 16th. Welcome to the rue Mallet-Stevens, designed by the delightful architect, Robert Mallet-Stevens (who I refer to as "RMS" during the podcast, because his name is such a mouthful.) RMS is undeservedly forgotten, unlike his contemporary, Le Corbusier--whose Fondation runs two villas just a few minutes' walk from the rue Mallet-Stevens. So we get to visit both architects' work, in one elegant stroll. As always, Improbable Walks is grateful to the technical expertise of Bremner Fletcher and to David Symons, the marvellous accordion player who performs the Improbable Walks theme music.

In this episode, we discuss the differences between Standards and Mass Customization: where is there value in each and how/should we go towards Mass Customization? Show Notes: What do we mean by Standards and Mass Customization/Individualization? How did Corbu and the Modernists define these conversations? First principles and early standards: how do we start off this conversation? How do we begin to implement a designed environment where mass customization exists? This is an especially tough question if that mass customization is run by AI or ML. We run a scenario about how this system might get up and running and then discuss its pros and cons. Why aren't we mass customizing our environment yet if we are already starting to do that with our entertainment, news, and transportation? Takeaways. Thanks for listening! Frontman Jonathan Graves' Corbu are on the heels of releasing one of the best albums you'll hear in 2016. Crayon Soul is melodic when you want it, a bit psychedelic when you need it with expansive lyrics and soaring vocals from Jonathan. Fellow members Amanda (creative partner) and Todd Hoellerman (drums) complete the triumvirate. Preceded by last year's two EP's, Corbu's debut was mixed by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT, Tame Impala). Although Crayon Soul isn't released until August, this episode features the latest single, "Battles", which is just one of twelve perfect songs. JHK explores a mostly abandoned low-income housing project in Duncan's neighborhood. Two of the three 9-story brick "vertical slums" are boarded up and abandoned. They come complete with their own "rape-o-matic" tunnel for pedestrians to travel under the bridge ramp that separates them. Kunstler says these "towers in a park" are based on the ideas of Le Corbusier, the Swiss-French architect/planner whose "Radiant City" plans envisioned turning the right bank of Paris into a series of high rise towers connected by highways. Corbu's plans were not implemented in Paris, but his ideas didn't die. In fact they morphed into what are commonly known as "the projects," low-income high rise towers all around the U.S. and indeed the world. Taking inspiration by the housing projects in Troy, Kunstler explains the history of this style of low-income housing and its detrimental side effects. Sponsor: PostCarbon.org
