In this episode, Nina Hershberger talks with Dr. Charles DeBettignies about the concept of gainsharing, a method of compensating employees based on the company's overall performance. Dr. Chuck has worked with over 400 service and manufacturing corporations to implement gainsharing, with impressive results. He has a doctorate in the field and has worked with major companies like ConAgra Foods, RCA, and PPG.Gainsharing is a system that aligns the goals of the employees with the goals of the company. It ties employees' pay to the overall outcome of the company, creating a game-like environment where everyone is focused on achieving the same result. Dr. Chuck explains that when employees see their pay directly linked to the company's performance, they become more engaged and motivated to contribute to the overall success.During the interview, Dr. Chuck uses the example of a dental office to illustrate how gainsharing can be implemented in various industries. He explains that by offering additional services to clients, such as teeth whitening, employees can improve revenue and benefit both the company and the clients. He emphasizes the importance of clear communication and training to ensure that employees feel comfortable offering these additional services and understand their benefits.Dr. Chuck distinguishes gainsharing from profit sharing, highlighting that gainsharing provides real-time feedback to employees and offers monthly payouts based on performance. This immediate connection between performance and reward is more motivating for employees compared to year-end profit sharing bonuses, which can become an entitlement over time.He also addresses the question of how productivity improvements can be measured and reveals that a 5% improvement in productivity is a reasonable expectation. By focusing on the key drivers of the company's bottom line, identifying areas for improvement, and continuously refining the system, employees can achieve significant productivity gains.Dr. Chuck encourages companies to embrace gainsharing as a tool to increase employee engagement and satisfaction. He believes that when employees see the direct impact of their actions on the company's success, they become more invested in their work and motivated to perform at their best.To learn more about Dr. Charles DeBettignies and gainsharing, listeners can visit Gainsharing.com/podcast. Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
Jeff Slater has always been a “noticer”. When he was a kid and first learned photography, he would notice a small moment, and it would forever be captured on film. As a young adult, he paid attention to all the ways people would show up and meet their passion. As a marketing professional, Jeff would notice the things that would inspire people and alchemize that for the benefit of the companies he worked for. But most importantly, as a son, husband, father, colleague and friend, Jeff pays attention to how he shows up - always asking himself how he can be more loving, more kind, and more empathetic. Jeff notices all of it - the large and small things - and he actively chooses to be present in the moment. Please listen to Jeff's perfectly imperfect journey - we think you'll be inspired to do a little less doing and a little more being. Bio: If there is one guiding principle I experienced throughout my life, it is the importance of living in the moment. I grew up in a loving family with parents, siblings, and highly supportive friends and relatives. Foundational blessings like these were gifts that helped keep me grounded and grateful. My 95-year-old mom Bea remains my most ardent life-long cheerleader. There were two catalyzing events from childhood setting me on my journey. As a young teenager, I worked with my maternal grandfather George. He was an orphan and an immigrant from Russia and came here at age ten. Poppa George became a professional photographer who learned his trade from his Uncle Henry in Newark, N.J. When I started working with him, he was my current age, sixty-eight. With my grandfather as my teacher, I witnessed the magic of photography where you can capture a moment with a camera that took less than 1/1000 of a second but could last a lifetime. From ages fourteen to twenty-four, I worked as a commercial photographer throughout high school, college, and graduate school. Photography was the creative spark that ignited my curiosity then and now. I assumed my path would lead me on my perfectly creative journey to becoming a photographer. I had no other professional life plans or goals. Around that same time in my childhood, I took my first TM or transcendental meditation class and became a lifelong meditator. I have continued this practice for more than fifty years. My balance and calm can, in part, be linked to this practice. Mindfulness and living in the moment are part of the narrative of my life's journey. But the universe had other plans; to my surprise, they involved the business world, specifically marketing. When I met my future wife, she graduated from Cornell with a degree in political science and French literature. But she had a small business selling extraordinary brownies from a home kitchen in Philadelphia. (Rated by Philadelphia Magazine as the best in Philly in 1975) Together, over more than a decade, we built a multi-million-dollar business selling Rachel's Brownies nationally. We had wild moments that included lunch with President Reagan, partnering directly with Ben & Jerry to make a Rachel's Brownies Ice Cream, and TV appearances on Phil Donahue's nationally syndicated tv show. We used to kid that all our friends were doctors, architects, and lawyers – professionals. And we were college-educated brownie makers spending our day knee-deep in chocolate. We were entrepreneurs without any business experience – yet we stumbled upon success. My wife Ra El (formerly Rachel) is the most courageous, extraordinary, and inspiring human I know. We have been married for almost 45 years. During the 1980s, our two magnificent daughters, Sarah and Fanny, were born. Each provided countless exquisite daily moments filled with joy, gratitude, and exhaustion. Both are remarkable women. During our daughter's early years, I realized that the more present I could be with them, the more joy was available to me in these small moments. Living in the moments, I could manage the stress and crazy entrepreneurial journey that required an astonishing amount of calm, persistence, and flexibility to handle life's daily challenges and perpetual chaos. We eventually sold our business in 1989 and moved from Philadelphia to Raleigh. During the next decade, I became the EVP of Marketing for a $400M snack food company called GoodMark Foods, which eventually was sold to ConAgra Foods, a $30B company. I worked in various senior marketing leadership positions, including a stint in a global marketing role at Nomacorc, now Vinventions, in the wine packaging industry. Today I manage a marketing consultancy called The Marketing Sage as Chief Listening Officer, providing fractional CMO services and brand strategy. My clients are startups, mid-sized private and public companies, and several billion-dollar brands. I work on strategic brand and marketing projects. I spend my days wondering how the day will bring me opportunities to be creative and helpful and to get empathy for my work. If you have a thousand hours, I will tell you about our three-and-a-half-year-old grandson Bodhi Kai. Website: https://www.themarketingsage.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreylslater/

You've spent time writing songs. You've gone into the studio to record some demos. Now it's time to get out there and pitch your artistry to the masses. But how do you go about doing it? Do you need a manager to help you thru the gauntlet known as the music industry? Is your career at a point where you would be ready for a manager? We talk with Chuck Thompson, who is a 40+ year veteran in the music industry, having worked in the Country music field as a manager for such acts as The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, Michell Wright, and others. Chuck explains what you need to look for, and what management will expect in return. He discusses how management is a specific need at a specific time for a specific function. We also go into what the difference is between an artist manager and a business manager. We touch base on what does a prospective manager look for when signing a new act? Is it based on their social media, their touring, or their record sales if applicable? Chuck Thompson began his 40 plus years in the entertainment industry while attending Nashville's prestigious Belmont College. It was there that a posting for an internship in publicity caught his eye. That internship turned into his first job when he was hired during his final year of study at the college to drive the media campaigns for David Allen Coe, Frizzell & West, Ricky Skaggs, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and George Strait. He cut his artist management teeth with acts Baillie and the Boys and comedy duo Pinkard and Bowden at the firm. Transitioning to the management firm The Ken Stilts Company where he would rise to the position of Vice President, Thompson and his team guided the careers of The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, and others. He worked alongside company principles to build an integrated corporate sponsorship/artist booking agency to work within the corporate and country music communities. While serving as Vice President/Director Of Public Relations for Pro Tours, the company launched co-branded country music tours for corporate clients GMC Trucks, Liberty Optical, The Sara Lee Corporation, and Sun Country Wine Coolers. In 1995, Thompson accepted the position of Director, Media Relations & Artist Development with the newly reorganized RCA Label Group Nashville. Working with the established RCA roster and with the BNA staff to launch the careers of recently signed artists Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, and Mindy McCready, he also created the label's media and sales opportunities' extensive catalog of masters. While leading the label's NASCAR efforts, working with the Kranefuss-Haus Racing Team, he developed marketing events for RCA and BNA artists and the race team's co-sponsors Little Caesar's Pizza and Kmart at racing events around the country. In October of 1996, Chuck left the RCA Label Group to return to the ranks of artist management as a co-manager of Decca recording artist Danni Leigh, opening the Thompson Entertainment Group's offices under the banner “Where music still has A Heart and A Soul.” He explains that tagline by saying, “In a world of broadening entertainment options, music is the thread that runs through it all, impacting every part of our lives. The truth in a great song and the heart of a great singer drives my passion, and my goal has always been to develop long-term brand strategies for each of our artists. In these unusual times, artists need new and innovative thinking from their management to adapt to the world we currently live in.” Corporate brands are also searching for innovative thinkers who understand a brand's needs and can create and execute unique, brand-driven partnerships. Harley Davidson, Coca-Cola, Panoptix, Conagra Foods, and others have turned to Chuck to help them develop and implement a brand strategy that will reach their customers through music-driven events. In 2016, the Navigator Records imprint was added to the TEG umbrella. The latest evolution in the company's growth allowed Thompson to utilize the many modern technologies and creative outlets now available to create a higher profile for the Thompson Entertainment Group family of artists. In the fall of 2018, Navigator Records released new studio recordings from Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame artist Michelle Wright, her first new music since the 2013 release of Strong. Other Navigator releases have included Wright's recording of the Christmas classic “Silver Bells,” released to coincide with A Wright Christmas: 2019 tour across the Alberta and Ontario provinces of Canada. 2020 into 2021 has also given rise to a new breed of creators. Navigator Records has provided major label services and distribution to those independent artists and labels who want to maintain their creative vision without sacrificing ownership or control while assisting established and developing artists eager to build and sustain meaningful careers. www.thompsonentertainmentgroup.com www.navigatorrecords.com The Business Side of Music ™ Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Co-Produced and Hosted (by the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer, Creator, and Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain): Tom Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Audio/Video Editor Mark Sabella Midnight Express Studio Olian, NY Marketing and Social Media: Kaitlin Fritts Executive Assistant to Bob and Tom (the one who keeps us on track and our schedules straight) Tammy Kowalski All Around Problem Solver: Connie Ribas Recorded at: The Bunker in Franklin, TN (except during the Covid 19 pandemic, then it's pretty much done VIA Skype or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's living room… and there are a few). Today I’m talking to Megan Belcher, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Scoular in Omaha, Nebraska. Raised in the midwest, Megan began her legal career at Husch Blackwell in Kansas City where she cut her teeth and honed her legal skills. She made the jump to in-house counsel when she joined ConAgra Foods in 2014. She would spend the next 9 years with the company, specializing in employment and compliance and learning to lead her business clients. Megan is now at Scoular, where she has been General Counsel for the last 3 years. What I took away from my discussion with Megan was the importance of career growth--Megan has continued to evolve and is driven to be a better leader and communicator every single day. She also walks the walk when it comes to lifting up other women. As you’ll hear, Megan was generous enough to introduce me, a young but ambitious lawyer, to her community of fellow general counsels. This woman has great thoughts and ideas -- I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did.

Take a stroll down the snack aisle of any grocery store in America and there’s a strong chance that you’ll spot a row of playfully designed pastel bags emblazoned with the words BOOM CHICKA POP in a large hot pink font. One could read the labels from across a room; according to Angie Bastian, the co-founder of better-for-you snack brand Angie’s Boomchickapop, that’s the point. “It’s our job to deliver good food, but let’s do something more than that,” Bastian said in an interview included in this episode of Taste Radio. “Let’s celebrate who we are. Let’s do it in a way that… reflects the simplicity and fun of the food.” Since Bastian and her husband Dan launched the company in 2001, it has evolved from a tiny operation selling kettle corn at farmers' markets and fairs to an ubiquitous retail brand with an estimated $100 million in sales in 2017. Success often yields suitors and last year Angie’s Boomchickapop was acquired by ConAgra Foods for $250 million. In an interview included in this episode of Taste Radio, Bastian spoke about the development of the brand, including its foray into retail stores, how femininity and fun were incorporated into a game-changing package revamp and about the company’s process for choosing the right financial partners at different stages of growth. About a dozen years before the launch of Angie’s Boomchickapop, a couple of Brown University graduates moved to Nantucket and started selling juice blends packaged in recycled wine bottles. Their business was the forerunner to Nantucket Nectars, an iconic brand in its own right, one that’s now part of the Keurig Dr Pepper portfolio. One of those co-founders was Tom First, who has since become a respected investor and advisor in the food and beverage industry and is currently an operating partner with Massachusetts-based private equity firm Castanea Partners. We spoke with First about positive business habits that he’s adopted during his career, along with those that he’s identified in other up-and-coming entrepreneurs We also explore negative habits that he picked up along the way and how he overcame them. Show notes: 3:44: Interview: Angie Bastian, Co-Founder, Angie's Boomchickapop -- Recorded in downtown Minneapolis, Bastian spoke with Project NOSH editor about the origins of her company, including the early days of bootstrapping and selling popcorn at home games of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings, why she believes in celebrating “the feminine with food,” and how that perspective played into a celebrated package revamp and why she views ConAgra, which acquired the company in 2017, as a partner that could “help make us better.” 26:34: Interview: Tom First, Operating Partner, Castanea Partners -- First spoke with BevNET Managing Editor Ray Latif about business habits that positioned himself for success as one of the co-founders of Nantucket Nectars along with those that he’s identified in other entrepreneurs. As part of the conversation, First explains why not being defensive about feedback was critical early in his career, why good leaders build great teams and trust people to do their jobs and the importance of face-to-face communication. 52:31: The Cup Runneth Over -- The hosts are joined by Ortenberg, who recently returned from Minneapolis and who spoke about her visit to the offices of General Mills and meeting with the food and beverage division of the MN Cup, which is startup competition hosted by the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. The hosts also discuss PepsiCo’s announced agreement to acquire SodaStream, a maker of tabletop carbonated water machines, for $3.2 billion. On March 7, 2016, the Supreme Court decided Americold Realty Trust v. ConAgra Foods, a case giving rise to a dispute over the scope of federal courts’ diversity jurisdiction. A group of corporations whose food perished in a warehouse fire sued the warehouse owner, currently known as Americold Realty Trust, in Kansas state court. Americold then removed the suit to the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, which accepted jurisdiction and resolved the dispute in favor of Americold. On appeal, however, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit held that the district court had lacked jurisdiction. Although the parties argued that diversity jurisdiction existed because the suit involved citizens of different states, the Tenth Circuit disagreed. As a trust and not a corporation, the court reasoned, Americold’s citizenship depended on that of its members, including shareholders. Given the lack of evidence regarding the shareholders’ citizenship, the court held, the parties had failed to demonstrate that the plaintiffs were citizens of different states than the defendants. -- By a vote of 8-0, the Supreme Court affirmed the judgment of the Tenth Circuit, holding that for purposes of diversity jurisdiction, the citizenship of an unincorporated entity depends on the citizenship of all of its members. Under Maryland law a real estate investment trust is held and managed for the benefit of its shareholders, the Court explained, so Americold’s members include its shareholders. Justice Sotomayor delivered the opinion for a unanimous court. -- To discuss the case, we have Erik Zimmerman, who is an attorney with Robinson Bradshaw in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

This week’s Feast Yr Ears features the incredible story of Franco Lania. As a troubled teenager trying to find his way, Master Chef Franco Lania says, “food saved my life”. Freshly out of high school, Franco’s father took him kicking and screaming to Kings Supermarket in Short Hills, New Jersey for a job. By the second week, Franco was enjoying his training where he discovered flavors and tastes that he never in his wildest dreams knew existed. Franco started to come alive. Through that job, he slowly but surely fell in love with food. Not only did he want to taste new things like ambrosia salad, he wanted to learn how to make them. Franco found his passion from which he later created the philosophy,“as you design your dishes and design your meals, you can design your life.” And design he did. Franco made his way to Le Cordon Bleu in London where he graduated with the_ Grand Diplôme_. Franco wanted to continue his quest for knowledge, so he attended the Master Course at the Italian Culinary Arts Institute in Costigliole d’Asti, Italy. Upon finishing his education, Franco’s culinary talent earned him the Sous Chef position at a new restaurant, slated to open in New York City. The job required that he take the Department of Health test for a food handler’s certificate. Franco arrived early at the World Trade Center on that beautiful, but tragic morning, September 11, 2001. Franco escaped, but the restaurant opening was delayed, and thus began a series of professional and personal hardships that sent him to the base bottom of his life. Franco could not even begin to think how he could move forward with his life, which left him subsisting on Pringles and orange soda. After a move to Miami, Franco took a job at a small Italian restaurant on South Beach that served delicious, simple food. He started to feel a nourishment that he had not felt in a long time. Franco was able to start orchestrating a plan. He realized his brain needed real food. Basic pasta. Chicken with onions. When he would make his chicken and onions dish, he discovered it was like therapy. The mouthwatering aromas enlivened him. He felt that he could face life again. Not only did the cooking act as therapy, it nurtured him. He carries that inspiration inside of him, and he shares it with his thousands of fans across the globe. Franco’s journey has brought him to the stoves at some of the most highly-acclaimed restaurants in the United States as well as Europe: La Grenouille, New York City; River Café, Brooklyn, NY; Pinot Bistro, Studio City, CA; Blue Door, Miami, FL; Dorchester Hotel, London, and the two Michelin-starred Sadler, Milan, Italy. His love for travel and cuisine lured him onto luxury cruise lines. On Oceania Cruises, whose culinary department is headed by the world-renowned Jacques Pepin, Franco was the first American to hold the Italian Chef position. He frequently appears as a guest chef on Celebrity Cruises’ transatlantic crossings. Through his unique experiences, Franco has attained the “marquee level” of a Certified Culinary Professional on land and at sea. Currently, Franco explores New Jersey’s diverse food culture through his show, Jersey Gems, airing on HomeTowne Television (HTTV); he is often the “Green Grocer” for their evening news. He is a member of the Culinary Advisory Board for ConAgra Foods. Franco has appeared twice on The Food Network’s 24-Hour Restaurant Battle. Chef Franco Lania now travels the world teaching people about the joy of food, cooking and how it has changed his life. He headlines conferences, is a celebrity chef at private events and represents large food brands for culinary demonstrations.

Mail Block: Listener questions and comments Question from Joseph Anthony - I appreciate your input on the following issues. I know that I am not alone in dealing with these questions. I continue to be confused on which weekly strike to choose when trading for a one or two day hold. I realize if issue does not move in my desired direction by Tuesday afternoon I risk theta decay and it increases rapidly as week progresses toward expiry. My thoughts in trading weeklies is to trade the ATM or most liquid on Monday and Tuesday. Trade one strike in the money on Wednesday and Thursday and trade two strikes in the money on Friday. I have read many articles recommending to trade DITM options (+-90) for a close to $1 for $1 effect. But the DITM are often quite illiquid and expensive. My model generates 75%+ success rate in choosing issues that move according to my projections and I choose to use weekly options to trade a small universe (AAPL, AMZN, GOOGL, AND NFLX) but I am still struggling to definitively choose the "right" option. My model is predicated on an immediate move and if it does not transpire in a bar or two I tighten my stop or exit. I am looking to trade naked or use strips and straps in order to implement my models signals. Thank you in advance. Question from NJay - What should I be using to value my index options properly, the cash index or the actual underlying futures? Thank you for all your insight. Around The Block: Earnings today (before the bell): ConAgra Foods, Lululemon Athletica Inc., Accenture, Cosi, Inc. After the Bell: GameStop Corporation. Friday: BlackBerry Ltd, Carnival Corp.

Six of the Nation’s Largest Food Companies & the Walmart Foundation to Generate 28 Million Meals & $3 Million in Donations to American Food Banks Celebrity Chef G. Garvin is ready to explain why the FIGHT HUNGER, SPARK CHANGE Campaign is being launched at a critical time for many Americans. Food banks are facing a growing need for donations due to historically high food prices and drought conditions threatening to drive up the prices of fresh produce and meat. In fact, Feeding America recently released its Hunger in America 2014 report showing that in a single year one in seven Americans, including 12 million children, turn to the Feeding America network for food assistance. To help meet this need, the Walmart Foundation is teaming up with six of the nation’s largest food companies – including General Mills, Unilever, Hormel, ConAgra Foods, PepsiCo/Quaker and Kellogg Company – to distribute $3 million to food banks and local partner agencies across the country. On Sept. 25, join Chef ‘G’ in the kitchen as he explains the importance of making sure that families have access to nutritious meals. For more information, visit: www.walmart.com/fighthunger. Through an agreement celebrated Nov. 16, ConAgra Foods hopes to foster a culture of innovation related to food science. For example, the collaboration will help further understanding and knowledge related to popcorn and tomato breeding and research. ConAgra Foods will leverage leased space in greenhouses at Nebraska Innovation Campus where it will grow and research tomatoes, such as those used in Hunt's and Ro*Tel brands, alongside university students and faculty. http://newsroom.unl.edu/announce/todayatunl/1839/10273
We kick off another Inside Music Row with the mention of Kellie Pickler. Kellie has recently buzzed her hair with best friend Summer Holt Miller when they found out Summer had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Little Big Town is also in the news as they have partnered up with ConAgra Foods for the "Child Hunger Ends Here" campaign. The initiative is part of the company's ongoing efforts to end child hunger in the United States, where there are more than 16 million kids impacted by food insecurity. Also in the news is The Rascal Flatts - they are going into the restaurant business. The first location in Phoenix will feature a state-of-the-art soundstage, two bars, a retail area and Flatts Lounge. We also discuss Mark Chesnutt as he is the first country artist to release a blu-ray 3D disc of a live performance. Scotty McCreery is up next as he is set to release his first holiday collection October 16th, "Christmas with Scotty McCreery." Finally, we go Inside The Song with co-writers Will Hoge and Eric Paslay as they talk about a song they wrote called "Even If It Breaks Your Heart," which Eli Young Band took all the way to number one.
