Autumn and Hunter discuss an article by Ian Harber called “The Christian in a Therapeutic Age.” Harber contends that while therapy terms describe real struggles, their overuse has turned treatable conditions into fixed identities. Amplified by social media, this therapeutic culture isolates people and worsens anxiety. In contrast, Christianity grounds identity in God, tells a story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. Committing to Christian practices - prayer, worship, Scripture, sacraments, community—nurtures resilience and belonging.Resources mentioned in this episode:The Christian in a Therapeutic Age by Ian HarberIs Today's Self-Help Teaching Everyone to be a Jerk? by Emma GoldbergHow Anxiety Became Content by Derek ThompsonHabits of the Heart by Bellah, Madsen, Sullivan, Swidler, and Tipton

I put quite a number of player interviews in the can on my trip to the west coast affiliates last week, and I'll roll them out over the next couple of weeks. First up, I have a trio of hitters — two trade acquisitions who have just gotten their first taste of action in the Giants' organization this month, and a high school draftee in his second season. Nate Furman and Parks Harber talk about the unique situation of being traded while rehabbing injuries, as well as their approach to hitting. Furman is one of best contact hitters in the minors, and Harber owns some of the most intriguing hit data in the minors, including a howling 90th percentile Exit Velocity above 108 mph. Lastly, I spoke to Walker Martin about how he used his difficult first season as a learning opportunity, leading to a much improved second year in the system. All three of these guys were thoughtful and articulate, and gave some great insights into their personal growth process. If you want to get more of this kind of content, why not consider becoming a There R Giants' subscriber so you, too, can support my work covering the Giants' farm system. There R Giants is a reader-supported publication. What do you do when you find yourself in a crisis of faith? How can you help someone walking through the questions and doubts they are experiencing?Ian Harber came to a critical junction in his own faith after experiencing loss after loss. Doubts began to rise and yet, he didn't have a safe space to process the questions that can so often come in our journey in knowing and understanding God. But eventually, Ian found himself on the other side of that process and began to see the need for helping others find the space to process their own questions and doubts. In his latest book, Walking Through Deconstruction: How to Be a Companion in a Crisis of Faith, he shares his own story of deconstruction and reconstruction and encourages others to be a companion to those who are experiencing a crisis in faith. In this episode, Davey and Ian discuss what deconstruction is, what can happen to a person who is experiencing a crisis in their faith, and how to walk alongside those who are questioning and doubting faith as they once knew it. Whether you are struggling with questions and doubts in your own journey with Jesus or you know someone who is, this conversation will encourage patience and compassion through the ups and downs of walking with God. In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer talks with Ian Harber, author of Walking Through Deconstruction: How to Be a Companion in a Crisis of Faith. Together, they explore the personal and cultural forces shaping deconstruction, why many in the church respond with fear or animosity, and how we can engage with those questioning their faith with patience, wisdom, and truth. Ian shares his own journey of deconstruction and reconstruction, highlighting the existential nature of faith crises and why intellectual arguments alone aren’t enough. Join us for a deep and thoughtful conversation on how the church can walk with those wrestling with doubt, engage the deeper assumptions behind deconstruction, and foster a faith that is both intellectually rigorous and spiritually resilient.

If you are a Christian, chances are you know someone who has deconstructed their faith or is doing so right now. You want to help them reconstruct their faith in Jesus, but you don't know how to act or what to say. “The truth is that we can't control someone's reconstruction,” writes Ian Harber. “What we can do is create environments — both in our interpersonal relationships and in our churches — that help minimize the intensity of someone's deconstruction by being a non-anxious presence, creating healthy relationships and churches full of trust and care, and having a more robust understanding of our faith to talk through with them.” In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I talk to Harber about what deconstruction is and how to be a better Christian friend and church community for someone who is experiencing a crisis of faith. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Ian Harber is author of Walking Through Deconstruction, published by InterVarsity Press. “Backslider.” A catch-all too often used to describe those within the faith who ask hard questions. But why doesn't the church have a more positive category for its members who begin to question their faith? Is the solution really to just come up with the right answers and shut them down? Or is there something deeper happening? Today's podcast guest, Ian Harber, speaks from personal experience. He shares his own process of deconstruction and reconstruction, which has taken more than ten years, and explores with Patrick what's actually happening, both culturally and spiritually, when someone deconstructs their faith. He explains why apologetics has become the central focus of deconstruction but shares why Christians must shift conversations away from intellectual debates and instead to deeper issues. Plus, why is there so much deconstruction content available now? What would he say to churches that don't have a healthy category for the deconstructors within their congregation? And is there deconstruction on the right, or is it limited to progressive theology? Listen now! Our new book, Joyful Outsiders, is coming January 21, 2025. From branded beers to cheeky merch, they break down some of their campaigns that made waves and sparked serious buzz. Identical twins Tamara Kahn and Terry Hord (née Harber) were born eight minutes apart and were both athletic as children. But they can now look back and see the fatigue and heat sensitivity they both experienced as early signs of the diagnosis to come - along with the trauma of losing their mother to cancer and the Epstein-Barr Virus that they contracted at the age of 15.In their 20s they received identical MS diagnoses, but a history of voluntary charity work led them to create an MS patient advocacy hub called TwinsCoast2Coast. They aim to inspire, empower, support, and educate others about MS, and to simply tell their story, imperfections and all.Despite the aggressive and progressive nature of MS for them both, they continue to create a support system and safe space for the newly diagnosed to land. As they say in this interview, "there is more to life than your disease - and you are not alone."Full show notes and resources at https://fumsnow.com/fums104/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
