Our guest from the end of 2021, Erik Engman (he/him) is an improviser, theater writer director, magic enthusiast, and clown. We discuss his journey with the arts, raising children, and finding his way to clowning.
There's an all-too painful reality of our time right now, it it's got to do with guns used in mass shootings in the United States of America. No other industrialized nation deals with this issue the way we do, and it's become so pervasive that gun deaths are now the leading cause of death for children in this country but rank no higher than fifth in other countries. Someone who knows this painful fact all too well is Melody Herzfeld, who was in her classroom at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on February 14th, 2018 when a gunman entered with an AR-15 assault rifle and murdered 14 students and 3 teachers. And while she bravely recounts the horror of that day in a transparent attempt to shine a light on a path forward to dealing with guns, she also discusses how she and her kids threw themselves into theater, music, art as a way to start to heal. And how the New York Broadway community came to their aid, right when they needed it most. FLIP IT ON ITS HEAD is so lucky and pleased to have Melody as a guest, I hope everyone listens with an open mind and an open heart. Like most Jewish men in their 50's Joshua and Kenny were in Fiddler on the Roof together in high school. Strangely, Kenny the lesser talent of the two had a lead role, Fyedka, whereas, Joshua, the much greater talent, had the tiniest of roles as, The Rabbi. But Kenny's role (And I can say this because I am Kenny) was not memorable…O, he looked good, but the acting…meh. On the other hand Joshua's 2 minute role turned into a show stopper! Damn, he was good! Joshua went on to star in his own network TV show called, The Marshall Chronicles, for 6 episodes at least. As 14 years old kids Joshua and Kenny met in the Intro to Performing arts class in 9th grade at Beverly Hills High School. Two kids from different sides of the tracks found a community and forged an enduring friendship. Join us as we reminisce about our highs and lows, the lessons we learned, and the people who made it all so special. Chris Fallows inspires students to push for their best efforts, without the need for constant compliment and gratification, instead focusing on the interior motivation of the feeling that accomplishment produces. Chris discusses some advice for a welcoming classroom environment, caring for students, and fostering a desire for excellence and achievement in theater that could translate to success in any academic classroom. This episode features some excellent tips for fostering positive relationships with students. I have seen first hand how much students love being in Mr. Fallows’ classroom, and I think you will enjoy this conversation with a few new takeaways for your teacher toolkit. Spoilers for Wizards (1977). Tonight we start off by discussing the FCC budding in to your High School Theater, but the meat of the content is the two animated things we watched. Wizards, a Ralph Bakshi film about the battle between magic and technology. And the first episode of Nichijou: My Ordinary Life, an anime about normal events blown out of proportion. What connects them? They're animated, and we watched both just before recording. Then we talk way too long about John McCain. You know, Nerd Stuff. Some nerds have a podcast is exactly that, a podcast by some nerds, Nick, Alyse, and Alex. In it, we discuss nerdy media such as video games, movies, TV shows, and perhaps even a webcomic or two.
