Fear is something we have all experienced in our lives, an elevated heart rate, tears, sweaty palms, a heightened sense of awareness, but most of us have no idea what it's like to live with constant fear. Today's guest, Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capuia, believes that chronic fear is trauma and that there is a relationship between fear and trauma and fear and racism. Like COVID-19, Racism is very much a pandemic. Dr. Moreland-Capuia believes the same systemic action we have taken to address the pandemic can also be used to address systemic racism. She believes that we cannot just be allies in the fight against racism, we must be accomplices and today she is helping us all better understand what we can do individually, with your families and within our communities to be a part of the solution.    About Dr. Moreland-Capuia  Alisha Moreland-Capuia, MD, is a community psychiatrist who works at the intersection of trauma, addiction, and mental health. Her core mission in life is to do good, serve others, and reduce human suffering. At McLean, Dr. Moreland-Capuia is the director of Trauma-Informed Treatment, Consultation, and Outreach for the Division of Depression and Anxiety Disorders and the associate medical director at the Hill Center for Women. Through her research, Dr. Moreland-Capuia explores how systems recognize, manage, and move away from trauma. Drawing on her expertise in global health, trauma, addiction, and system development and change, Dr. Moreland-Capuia's research seeks to reduce unnecessary human suffering. She also hopes to contribute to an increased understanding of the impact of trauma on brain development and the overall risk for mental illness and how trauma shows up in systems. Dr. Moreland-Capuia's work builds on her experience training organizations, educators, government officials, and others in trauma-informed organizational change. This training explains the impact of trauma on individuals, populations, and systems. It also instructs organizations on ways they can change to best serve those who have been affected by trauma. Her approach is presented in her book, “Training for Change: Transforming Systems to be Trauma-Informed, Culturally Responsive, and Neuroscientifically Focused.”

In today’s episode, Emily is speaking with Beth Anderson. Beth leads the Hill Learning Center, a K–12 non-profit based in Durham, North Carolina, that has an innovative approach to meeting the needs of students with learner differences. Their mission is to transform students who have learning differences through a variety of programs that are research-based and distinguished by being highly differentiated: direct, small group instruction in reading, writing, math, and executive function. In just the last year, they’ve reached about 1,000 students directly and have trained over 1,200 teachers in their methodologies.   Tune in to learn more about the Hill Learning Center and the amazing impact they’re having on students with learning differences and what Beth hopes to see in the future when it comes to working with these learners and their families.   Key Takeaways: [:07] About today’s episode. [:30] Emily welcomes Beth Anderson to the podcast. [:41] Beth introduces herself, speaks about Hill Center, and explains why it is that she does what she does! [2:03] Beth defines learning differences and explains how differentiation in Hill Center looks both similar and different from what she’s seeing in K–12 schools. [4:11] Does Beth find that a lot of the research-based strategies and practices they’re using at Hill Center would also work well for all learners (whether or not they come to school settings with learning differences)? [5:35] Beth shares some of the ways that they are innovating and pushing the boundaries when it comes to working with learners with differences. [8:08] Does Beth think some of their success with working with learners with differences are attributable to the mastery-based approach? [10:13] Has Beth found that learners at Hill have more agency over their learning both at Hill and in their mainstream classroom setting? [11:28] How Hill’s educators and facilitators are working towards being more intentional in getting to know their learners better. [14:42] Beth speaks about what they’re doing at Hill to create more access and opportunity for learners that cannot attend Hill. [18:20] Beth shares her hopes and dreams for the learners and their families at Hill. [20:55] Beth points listeners to where they can learn more about Hill and its resources. Industry Night with Foodie & The Beast

Craft beers have become as diverse – and as delicious – as wine. What started as folks making homebrews in the tib (OK, we’re exaggerating a little to make s point) has become big business, with major breweries buying up-and-coming breweries in order to stay competitive. That said, we thought we’d go back to craft brewing’s roots and take a deep dive into the subject with folks who came from and know the homebrewing scene cold. Joining us on Industry Night with Foodie and the Beast are: President Michael Stein and CEO Peter Jones OF Lost Lagers, the premier beverage research firm in D.C. Michael and Pewter help us experience history through beer, recreating extinct ales and lost lagers with some of the best breweries in the country and teaching homebrew classes at The Hill Center in Southeast DC. Michael has served his historic beers at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s Food History Program and serves as beer historian at DC Brau Brewing Company, LLC, the first production brewery in DC since 1956. Peter is a certified beer judge, and longtime homebrewer who also is Education Chair for the DC Homebrewers Club, Peter has taught a variety of topics and techniques for brewing novices through experts. Also joining in is Sara Bondioli, current president of the DC Homebrewers club and a co-founder of the club's women's brewing group, HOPS. The conversation is scintillating, as always, and the homebrews we taste are beyond good. Listen in!!!

Today’s conversation is a pretty emotional one for me because what we’re talking about is still raw. A few years ago we knew our oldest daughter was struggling, but we couldn’t figure out why. She’d been a bright and sparkly child whose light had begun to dim after she started school. Her self-doubt and feelings of worthlessness became so overpowering that we feared we were losing her. We eventually discovered that she has dyslexia. Luckily for us, fortune brought us to today’s guest. Rita Waddell is a mama to two grown boys and the outgoing head of Oak Hill School, is a specialised centre that supports children with dyslexia and ADHD. In this conversation I share our family’s journey into the unknown world of learning differences (spoiler alert: I get a little teary.) Rita and I talk about what behavioural and emotional clues parents can watch for, and how to go about identifying and supporting any learning difference in your children. Whether or not you know someone with a learning difference (dyslexia or otherwise), I urge you to listen to today’s episode. Up to 20% of ALL populations are dyslexic, so what you learn today could help you support a relative, a friend or a colleague. NWP welcomes David Guas! This charismatic chef, widely familiar from his frequent appearances on "The Today Show," brings a rugged charm as host and co-judge of "American Grilled," Travel Channel’s 13-episode high-heat, high-stakes cooking competition program, which aired throughout Summer of 2014. With no competition for attention, Guas has garnered national praise in publications like Food & Wine, Southern Living, Garden&Gun, Saveur and Bon Appétit for showcasing the soul of the South in his sinfully delicious, Louisiana-style favorites and signature desserts at the neighborly Arlington, Virginia restaurant, established in 2010, Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery. His second venue, opening spring 2015, will be Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery at Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital, occupying an historic carriage house on Washington's Capitol Hill commissioned by President Abraham Lincoln at the height of the Civil War. Both offer discerning eaters a range of comforting options in a leisurely, rustic, counter-service hangout. http://www.chefdavidguas.com/#!
