To be clear, she was only representing her own views in this episode. There's some very specific language about ontology in this episode but I think it's quite approachable for most people as a good understanding of ontology, the difference with taxonomies, and some specific insight into developing and applying an ontology. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Neda's point of view:When starting developing an ontology, it's best to start from the business questions you want to answer. It is okay to choose bottom up or top down, but the business applicability is the main point. You can convince people ontologies and knowledge graphs aren't scary or that hard to learn and leverage with a small demo of what they do and how to use them.Look for open ontologies that have already been created around your domain or area you are trying to model. They can usually be easily augmented and extended but there's no reason to reinvent the wheel.Data people need to learn enough about the domain to build the right ontologies and data models but data people learning domain knowledge can "discombobulate" them :) Get the data people with the subject matter experts to learn what's necessary.Try to keep your ontology as generic as possible but still encapsulate what you need; that way it is much easier to apply the ontology to other domains/departments. Set your ontology up to evolve as you learn more about your organization and as your organization...
The guest on this episode is Mike Shaw who has spent the past six years working in Learning & Development. However, prior to that he has spent two decades working in the Education sector as a teacher and then in various Senior Management/Leadership positions. In this episode we find out why Mike decided to make the transition, the challenges he faced, but how the power of building up a network ultimately led to successfully securing a position as a Head of L&D in a large corporate business. We talk about how important it is when you come from somewhere like a non-traditionally corporate background to reframe your CV to overcome prejudice and lack of understanding by recruiters and hiring managers but what benefits someone who is doing a career change can bring.Mike's career has been built on the rule of 'do the job until you've feel you've done it as well as you can or you feel you've outlived the whatever you were brought in to do'. We take this concept and explore how businesses, HR, and line managers should be doing more to have open and honest conversations with employees to address those factors that can potentially lead to someone leaving.Mike is a fascinating individual who has been able to identify what he enjoys doing most and keep that as a 'core' through his career, whilst taking some interesting twists and turns with the decisions he has made. I hope you enjoy listening as I loved doing the recording.Support the show

What is it like to work for one of the most well-known and growing brands in the food industry? That's exactly the position Dr David Lloyd, Senior Research and Development Manager at Huel, finds himself in. In this episode of the Career Conversations podcast series, the first to be recorded in front of a live studio audience as part of our Inspiring Careers in Food Series of events, he reveals all about his journey to the top. Dr Lloyd's role as Huel is heavily science based and includes a lot of project management. He has a degree in Chemical Engineering, which he got at Loughborough University, and he has a PhD in Formulation Engineering from the University of Birmingham. Before joining Huel, he was chief scientist at the huge multinational Unilever. Listen to the full episode to find out how Dr Lloyd found the move from Unilever to Huel, how much you can expect to earn if you follow a career path like his, and enjoy some questions from our audience of students who attended the event. Dr David Lloyd, Senior R&D Manager, Huel Dr David Lloyd is Senior R&D Manager of Huel, a food company that makes a variety of nutritionally complete, plant-based meal products. As Huel has expanded in employees, sales revenue and scientific capability, David has played an important role on that journey over the last 3 years. He is now co-ordinating Huel's longer-term R&D strategy to drive further growth and help Huel move up another gear. A passionate scientist and engineer (depending on the task at hand), David whilst still in the relatively early stages of his career has had a somewhat varied experience across industry and academia. Graduating from Loughborough with a degree in Chemical Engineering, it is slightly unconventional David wasn't swallowed into the world of Petrochemicals and Pharmaceuticals with most of his peers but his passion for food led him in a different direction. After studying an Engineering Doctorate in Formulation Engineering under well renown food scientist Prof. Ian Norton, David worked 5 years for FMCG giants Unilever carrying out R&D innovation projects on ice cream & Ready-to-drink Iced Tea. Looking for a new challenge brought him into the early stages of the rapidly growing Huel business looking after their Ready-to-drink category before a switch to his current role. A common theme throughout David's career is the ability to adapt and thrive in different environments. Industry or academia, small or large business, he has won multiple accolades for presentations, business delivery and most recently been nominated for Food & Drink Scientist of the Year 2022.
Learning & Development roles can vary greatly depending on the individual's specialism, ambition, and the opportunities within any given team. But the opportunity to run an L&D department solo is a unique experience and one that brings as much freedom and excitement as it does challenge and resourcefulness. In this episode, Aimee compares and contrasts her experience in L&D teams and her solo role now and provides insights into how to make this successful and a career move of choice. KEY TAKEAWAYS The term standalone R&D roles different things to different people. In this case, it means working alone in an organisation, as a generalist, doing whatever is required. Working alone forces you to grow your skillset quickly. With standalone L&D you have to lean on others in the organisation. You have to be careful not to burn out when working in a standalone role. Working in a standalone role forces you to properly identify what is effective. You cannot afford to reinvent the wheel. Tapping into what is there and building on it is essential. You end up being very close to all of your internal clients. BEST MOMENTS 'What is rarely explored is how one person does this (L&D) on their own. ' 'In a standalone role, you really have to be passionate.' 'Reserve your energy. Please look after yourself. You can´t do it all. ' ABOUT AIMEE YOUNG Aimee is L&D Manager at Snowplow, a behavioural data company, and is the only person in L&D. Before this role, Aimee worked in L&D for OLIVER Agency, Sumitomo and Taylor Wessing. Aimee began her L&D career at Towards Maturity benchmarking L&D teams and providing insights for the profession.
