In 2018, Gold Dot Beer's Kevin Davey was working as the brewmaster of Portland Oregon's Wayfinder Beer when he hit upon the idea of brewing an India Pale Ale with lager yeast. Hazy IPAs had yet to consolidate their grasp as the dominant substyle of the traditional West Coast variety, and this was the age of tinkering; in fact, Davey says his experimental brew was an answer of sorts to Kim Sturdevant's Brut IPA invention in San Francisco during that same era. (Check out the episode directly prior to this one for that story.) Davey called his crisp, clear, dry-hopped creation “Cold IPA” — a nod to its lager-like production process, and the temperature at which it's meant to be enjoyed. Celebrating the love of low ABV beersLast year's Little Beer Fest provided unusually cold temps in Duluth, GA with a bit of "wintery mix," aka rain, snow, and sleet.  Fortunately we didn't see a repeat and this year's event provided plenty of sunshine and temps in the 70s.  Perfect weather for enjoying some low ABV beers.  Huge shoutout to Todd DiMatteo and Good Word Brewing for hosting a great festival. Matty Hargrove - Blackberry Farm BreweryAs we sipped our way through the festival we talked with Matty Hargrove from Blackberry Farm Brewery.  He brought us Bloody Marys so w were off to a good start.  Matty talked about the farm and the brewery and doing things (brewing, food, service) with intention.  We reminisce about the Nuit Belge festival and how much we enjoy their Classic Saison.John Holl - All About Beer & Steal This BeerFresh off his Lager Panel at Little Beer Fest beer journalist John Holl joined us to chat.  When asked if we were in a lager moment John pauses to remind us that lagers have been king in America for many years, and craft lager is catching up.  We also discuss the rise of hazy IPAs and how it coincides with the popularity of Instagram and other photo and video sites where image is more important than quality.  On the quality note, many craft brewers are focusing on classic European and German lagers where nuance is more important than all that juice. You can hear more from John, and Augie Carton, on the Steal This Beer podcast.Lisa Allen - Heater AllenHeater Allen was an early entry into craft lager with their brewery coming up on 15 years.  Their taproom is currently undergoing renovations and will soon feature beers from a fun side project, Gold Dot Beer - a joint venture with Wayfinder Beer's Kevin Davey, the creator of the Cold IPA.  Gold Dot will bring IPAs and English styles to the taproom.  Lisa also shares the unique aspects of brewing beer in Wine Country as we ask about wine barrels and grape must in beers.Augie Carton - Carton Brewing & Steal This BeerChatting with Augie Carton was a great way to wrap up the show.  He now holds the record for the most swear words in a segment.  We should get him a trophy.  Augie shares how much he enjoyed hThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Cold IPA is a newer term for a style of beer that aims for a crisper IPA coined by Kevin Davey, Brewmaster at Wayfinder. Today Kevin joins us on The BrewDeck to help us learn more about what sets this IPA style apart. We kick off the discussion, hearing a little more about Kevin's background, and then dive right into how he came up with the idea to mix his favorite parts of an IPA and put them all into one thing. Kevin gets into the distinct flavor profile of the Cold IPA and how this feeds into his decision to name it as such, and then we take a deep dive into the types of hops, barley, and adjuncts that go into it. Here we explore Kevin's decision to move from rice to corn, the barley growing industry in the US and its effect on cost, and the choice to use adjuncts instead of a malt-only recipe. Toward the end of the discussion, Kevin weighs in on a few top tips for anybody interested in brewing a Cold IPA of their own, making sure to cover water profile, base malts, mash temperature, and his unique technique of developing in the middle of the hop creep. Kevin wraps up with a final description of the Cold IPA as an antithesis to a Hazy: it's more carbonated, drier, more clear, more bitter, more everything! So for all this and more about Relapse cold IPA from Wayfinder Beer, tune in today! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebrewdeck/message

Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Podcast

Kevin Davey doesn’t understand why Wayfinder’s “Cold IPA” has gone viral in brewing circles. This proponent of genre bending approaches to brewing that respect tradition but recombine elements of tradition in curious ways has been vocal in the past about what they’re doing—making “IPA” in a way that respects the flavor while twisting the technique. They haven’t been hiding anything, so why the hubbub now? The beer that seems to be the center of the brewing internet’s latest furor is Relapse, a beer they’ve dubbed a “Cold IPA” (much to the chagrin of those IPL advocates and style guide purists who insist nothing of the sort can exist). It’s definitely not “traditional”—mashed with a grist of 30% rice, fermented with 34/70 lager yeast, and krausened with pils or helles wort when dry-hopped, it doesn’t appear on paper to be connected to the broader school of west coast IPA. But taste it and you’ll understand how these curious methods produce a beer that feels perfectly aligned with the conceptual ideas that have driven west coast IPA for the past two decades. It's worth noting, of course, that the beer in question—Relapse Cold IPA—was a Craft Beer & Brewing beer of the year for 2020. The quality and technical execution of the beer is beyond reproach, and the creativity in process is, of course, just icing on the cake. In this genre-busting episode, Davey discusses: The impact of step mashing on yeast health and effective fermentation Using American malt for higher enzyme component to work with rice and corn adjuncts when cereal mashing The benefit of brewing with rice Importance to flavor and aroma of boiling hops (and not just dry hopping) Balancing fruitiness and bitterness in hoppy beers Fermenting during dry hopping to encourage hop creep and to dry out the beer, and krausening with pilsner or helles Finding language that does justice to the intent of a beer in a way that connects with consumers “I loved California West Coast IPA when I first started in the industry,” says Davey. “And so I’m like ‘What if we just take that further? Let’s make it even clearer. Let’s make it even less caramel-y. Let’s make it even dryer.’ That’s why—on the can—we say it’s ‘wester than west coast,’ because we’re taking all the things that are already west coast and we’re just pushing them a little bit further.” *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): As the brewing industry’s premier choice for glycol chilling, G&D Chillers has set the standard on quality, service, reliability and dedication to their customer’s craft. Just how difficult is it? Not surprisingly, you need to have some understanding of trading and some aptitude for writing code for the strategies you devise. Ever had a strategy that looked like it was broken and wondered if you should stop trading it or not? Strategy failure (or periods of poor performance) are just a part of trading, but how you deal with it can have a HA-YUGE impact on your overall results… so how do you detect when a strategy is failing? How do you work out if you should stop trading it or just give it some more time? In this episode of BST Live, trading champion Kevin Davey joins us to discuss how to detect when a strategy is failing, including: • Why looking at a single equity curve is not giving you the full picture, • How to determine the potential ranges of future strategy performance, • Using Statistical Process Control to monitor trading strategies and which metrics are best, • How Probability Cones can give traders a more informed view of strategy performance (and when a strategy could be broken), • What do to when a strategy over-performs (the answer may not be what you think!), • Should you turn a strategy back on if it recovers after extremely poor performance, • How a really good backtest can actually be a predictor of bad performance, • Plus, much more!

February’s Dog BREAKING THE STIGMA OF MENTAL ILLNESS IN ALBERTA PAUL J. CHINOOK IS BREAKING THE STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH AND BRINGING AWARENESS FOR ALBERTA OIL FIELD WORKERS AND PEOPLE IN CANADA What did you like most about playing Dale Walters in February’s Dog? Dale is an extremely like able character. He’s very charismatic, charming, and easy going. There are layers to his character that the audience get exposed too as the story plays through. At first glance, it appears as though he doesn’t have a care in the world. That he’s just kind of like a big friendly dog eager to make everyone happy like he’s fed off smiles and laughter. We catch glimpses of the depth of thought he is capable of at the rare moment when he lets his guard down. “Hopefully what we can do is draw attention to mental health issues and draw attention to the resources and get people talking about these issues.” - Chinook February's Dog takes place in Alberta in modern time and is set against the beautiful and iconic back drop of the Canadian Rocky Mountains under a shroud of winter snow. It follows two uniquely different, yet typical men – Dale Walters (played by Paul J. Chinook) is a very charismatic and lighthearted man that works hard to enjoy a life of adventure and excitement. His work partner, Nigel Loggins, (played by Kevin Davey) is a military veteran who is quiet and calculated in his approach towards life. The film opens with these two men as they are finishing up work on a Friday. They get called into the office at the end of the day and are laid off by their boss Arthur Newbury, (played by Doug Wilson) a very clean cut, to the point, middle aged manager. Arthur is a friend and suggests that this is just temporary, and that they will be back at work in three months – just as soon as market oil prices recover. Dale and Nigel interpret this “break” quite differently and act accordingly. Ultimately though, both men find themselves in a merciless battle against desperation and depression. How will they get out? Or will they? The story is a hard one but one that needs to be told as it is far too common silent battle in today’s society. The film stars Paul J. Chinook, Quinn Teechma, Kevin Davey, Will Webster, Sarah Wheeldon, Dan McDougall, Doug Wilson, Felipe Paredes and more. Chinook has been in the Calgary television and film industry as an actor and writer since 2013 and wanted to take that next step. “It’s really challenging as a Calgary or an Alberta actor to land those auditions, because nine out of 10 the production already has a Vancouver or a LA actor established for that role before you even go in there.” I started writing this story to keep busy and what a topic it was to write about. So many people have gone through this, losing their job in the oil field.” “It’s got a very strong mental health aspect to it. We watch two of the characters go through some extremely challenging situations and sadly are far too real in Alberta right now with losing work and struggling and bills piling up.” He has written five screenplay ideas and this is the first one that went into the production. “It’s kind of all been surreal,” shares Chinook. - Regina Leader Post Starring and created by Paul J. Stephen Yacktman, chief investment officer at the Yacktman Funds, says in the Market Call that while the value investment style has lagged growth in recent years, that does not mean investors haven't been able to generate reasonable relative returns that live up to appropriate expectations. He did note that managers may have to look further afield to find some of those bargains and values, and noted that he is looking abroad more now as pricing abroad is more likely to meet his criteria given that domestic markets are at all-time highs. Also on the show, John Yesford of High Income Opportunities talks return of capital in The NAVigator, author Randy Charles Epping discusses 'The New World Economy,' and Kevin Davey of KJ Trading Systems gives his technical take on the market.

Glad you could join us today for a discussion on what is probably one of the most popular topics in trading, and that is entries and exits. Traders love talking about entries, but the truth is, when you dig deeper and test them out, you might just discover lots of entry and exits techniques either don’t actually work very well at all or don’t work as well as expected. So, how do traders know what makes a good entry or exit? How do we go about building effective entries and exits for our trading strategies? Well, in this podcast episode we dig deeper into entries and exits with special guest Kevin Davey. Kevin has just released a book on entries and exits, so we’re going to dig into that a little and discuss a number of other aspects of entries and exits too, including: What makes a good entry – logic, symmetry, indicators, patterns or something else? How to test the effectiveness of an entry to determine if it’s any good, An unexpected way to use entries that could radically improve your trading strategies, The hidden dangers of combining and optimizing exits, A simple technique to determine if you could be optimizing too much, Where to find enough entries and exit ideas to keep you busy for a year, Plus, much, much more. Let’s get started with my chat with Kevin on entries and exits.

I will remember him most for his openness about his life. What a great guy. Kevin describes, in depth, how he lost his wife to a drunk driver. Describes the pain of the loss, raising children as a single dad and the challenges of getting back on the dating market. He describes his, now adult children, with the upmost pride as they conquer life after loss. I think I could have easily ran this podcast for 2 more hours as we discussed what its like to be on the set of a big budget TV show, the difference between Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the difficulties with being an actor in Alberta. He won the World Cup Championship of Futures Trading and tells us how to approach a Trading Competition with victory in mind He has built countless profitable trading algorithms and lets us in on his secrets Trader Interview - Kevin Davey - How to Win a Trading Competition and Algo Trading Strategies Kevin Davey’s success at the World Cup of Futures Trading from 2005 to 2007 is the stuff of legend. He came second in 2005, first in 2006 and second again in 2007. This unprecedented level of success led the world to sit up and take notice. Kevin achieved his remarkable run through developing trading algorithms. After 15 years of fruitless labour and after trying various trading techniques, Kevin perfected a winning process. His process enables him to find and select trading ideas, backtest them, perform the perfect amount of optimisation, and release them into the wild to trade away at all hours, bringing him profit! Crucially, his method of approaching the data and parameter optimisation prevents him from falling into the traps of hindsight bias and over-optimisation that most beginner algo-builders suffer from. This trap is even more prevalent when using automatic backtesting than with manual backtesting. If you manually backtest a system then you have by definition already chosen the system and can’t “curve fit” it for the data. With automatic backtesting, too often people run the data, change the parameters, run the data, change the parameters etc etc ad infinitum. This is because it is so quick and easy to do so. This approach will inevitably lead to over-optimisation and a system that works amazingly well in back testing but crashes and burns in real life! Disaster! An Engineer’s Perspective After reading Kevin’s Book - Building Winning Algorithmic Trading Systems - it is pretty clear that his background as an engineer is central to his process. That is not to say you need to be an engineer or otherwise very mathematical to master it, but the attention to detail and precision that he uses is second to none. His use of Monte Carlo Simulation and out-of-sample Walk Forward Testing, take data analysis and edge-proving to the next level. If you want to build winning algos like Kevin Davey builds winning algos, then you need to accept the necessity for this mathematical approach. Crypto Competition - It’s ON! Tom and Owen discuss opening strategies for the competition on this episode. You may have noticed over the past few weeks of 'Thursday Trading Thoughts' that we’ve been following a theme. In episode 113 we heard about a test Kevin Davey calls the ‘Monkey test’, which can be used to measure the effectiveness of entries and exits. Then in episode 114 we reviewed a technique that Dave Bergstrom shared to measure the decay of a trading edge so that we can determine when an edge has gone, and not overstay our welcome at the party. In this weeks trading thought we’re going to discuss the process of combining edges, filters, conditions into a trading system. A common practice when building trading strategies is to combine indicators or filters to see how that particular combination impacts performance, however this practice can be overused or abused, leading to curvefit strategies that don’t perform so well in live trading. In today’s episode we're going to hear one solution for this problem, from our guest Art Collins, who is going to tell us the process he uses to combine edges while reducing the risk of overfitting, so let's hear from Art.

Last week we reviewed a technique Kevin Davey shared to measure the effectiveness of entries and exits using something he calls ‘the monkey test’. This week we’re going to look at entries and exits from a slightly different angle: How can we measure a trading edge after we’ve entered a trade, Is it possible to identify when that edge has disappeared so we can consider exiting the trade rather than overstaying our welcome? In this episode we’re going to review a technique that Dave Bergstrom uses to measure the decay of a trading edge. We pick up the conversation talking about validating trading strategies for robustness, take a listen!

Today, we’re going to have a quick chat about the effectiveness of entries, and a simple technique you can use to determine how good an entry or exit really is. I’ve been working on some breakout strategies lately and I’ve noticed in some of them that the entry really isn’t that important at all… That is, I can be pretty loose with the entry values and get similar results… So there are other components to the strategy that are actually driving the performance. Now, this got me thinking about measuring the effectiveness of entries and exits, so today I want to share a technique that Kevin Davey calls the “monkey test”. And no, you don’t need actual monkeys for this! Let’s hear how Kevin uses the monkey test to check how good his entries and exits really are.

One of the appeals of automated trading is that it can be automated. You can 'set it and forget it' if you want. However there can be some dangers with doing so. About a year and a half ago I went through a period of being a little bit slack with monitoring my automated strategies and there was one occasion where my 'set it and forget' approach turned into a case of 'forget it and regret it'... ... A stop loss order for one of my strategies had been rejected ... I failed to check my trading platform for a few days because I was travelling and tired ... That particular lesson cost me 2-3 times the original stop loss size. So that was a stupid thing to do. But I learnt my lesson and now I check my trading platform alot more. A regular checkup to make sure everything is running smoothly is incredibly important because technology issues can (and will) happen at any time. But there's another process I've implemented which has helped me to identify issues that could have gone on for a lot longer if I'd left them unchecked. I got this process from Kevin Davey, so in this episode I've asked Kevin to join us for a quick chat to explain his own monitoring process some more, including some examples of the things he's found by following this process. So lets head over to my chat with Kevin Davey to hear more.

Did you know that Dr Seuss wrote the book “Green Eggs and Ham” on a bet that he couldn’t write a book with 50 words or less? That’s right, in 1960, the founder of Random House made a $50 bet with Dr. Seuss that he would not be able to write a book using only 50 different words. Well he accepted the challenge… Creating “Green Eggs and Ham”… And that book has sold more than 200 million copies, making it one of the best-selling childrens books in history! Think that was a fluke? Dr Seuss found that setting constraints was so powerful he used it with other books as well. His book ‘The Cat in the Hat’ was limited to around 250 different words from a list of 348 words selected from a first graders vocabulary list. That book sold millions of copies too. Dr Seuss is just one example of the power of constraints, showing us that setting limits can often produce better results than “keeping our options open”. Constraints can force us to think better, work better, and come up with more creative solutions. So how can we apply this principle to trading? What impact can it have? In this episode we discuss a few ideas from Kevin Davey, take a listen.

This week on the podcast I have algorithmic trader, Kevin Davey. Who like many guests in the past, he comes from a background in engineering – there’s something about these engineers, they seem to make really great traders… After getting off to a bumpy start 25 years ago, Kevin has come a very long way. Between 2005 and 2007 Kevin competed in the World Cup of Futures Trading Championship, where he finished in first place once, and second place twice. Each time with returns in excess of 100%! Kevin is also the author of Building Winning Algorithmic Trading Systems, a book which has been well-received by the trading community and has plenty of 5-star ratings and reviews on Amazon. During this interview we cover the great focus Kevin places on trading multiple strategies in multiple markets to achieve a smoother equity curve. And he also walks us through his development process for taking an algorithmic strategy from objectives and initial idea, through to total automation. Plus plenty more, and even if you’re not familiar with this side of trading, you shouldn’t have too much trouble keeping up, because Kevin does an excellent job of explaining everything. Also, I’m going to ask again… If you haven’t already done so, could you please leave a very brief review on the podcast in iTunes while you’re listening. Just go to chatwithtraders.com/itunes, if you’d like to support the show.
