Metronomy are a wonky pop 5-piece from the UK. They've been a major indie staple in their homeland for over a decade, & it's really no wonder why - their unique approach to pop is more than meets the ear, encompassing an eclectic concoction of other genres. Their latest record, Small World is no exception: you'll hear indietronica rubbing shoulders with alternative rock, dream pop, & more. And it all soundtracks a hopeful message, which we'll be discussing in this episode.
"Dirty Projectors" started out as a solo project from founding member David Longstreth, who wrote, recorded and self-released the first two albums while he was studying music at Yale University. During his summer breaks he would go on tours throughout the USA, playing mostly in small rock clubs organized by DIY promoters who he had connected with via Myspace. It was during these early years that David would also connect with other musicians, in order to create a band and bring his albums to life on stage. The line-up has morphed drastically over the years, encompassing over 20 different individuals, but it was the experience of putting together the live band that inspired David and his co-musicians to continue the collaborations in the studio, and since then "Dirty Projectors" have very much put together music in a collaborative sense.Fast forward almost 20 years to 2020, and we see yet another line-up change. This time 5 full time members who were introduced to listeners by 5 separate EPs that dropped throughout 2020, together with cover artwork provided by David's brother Jake Longstreth. For the full story and our music picks, tune in to this week's installment of "Roots to Grooves"!To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Indie rock was extremely diverse, with subgenres that include indie pop, jangle pop, and lo-fi, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US, and then Britpop bands in the UK, broke into the mainstream in the 1990s, it came to be used to identify those acts that retained an outsider and underground perspective. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, a number of indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.In the mid-1980s, the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music produced on post-punk labels.[1] A number of prominent indie rock record labels were founded during the 1980s. During the 1990s, Grunge bands broke into the mainstream, and the term "alternative" lost its original counter-cultural meaning. The term "indie rock" became associated with the bands and genres that remained dedicated to their independent status.[2] By the end of the 1990s indie rock developed a number of subgenres and related styles. Following indie pop these included lo-fi, noise pop, emo, sadcore, post-rock, space rock and math rock.[2] In the 2000s, changes in the music industry and in music technology enabled a new wave of indie rock bands to achieve mainstream success.[3]In the early 2000s, a new group of bands that played a stripped-down and back-to-basics version of guitar rock emerged into the mainstream. The commercial breakthrough from these scenes was led by four bands: The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives and The Vines. Emo also broke into mainstream culture in the early 2000s.[4] By the end of the 2000s the proliferation of indie bands was being referred to as "indie landfill".[5] Indietronica took off in the new millennium as digital technology developed, with acts including Broadcast from the UK, Justice from France, Lali Puna from Germany and The Postal Service, Ratatat, and BOBBY from the USA.[6]Get Your FixAddictions and Other Vices*
Brooklyn indie-pop duo Wet seamlessly blends synthpop, folk, soft rock and '90s R&B sounds into a melancholic gumbo. Their sophomore record, Still Run, builds on their emotional-pop sound with 10 songs that embody an overwhelming sense of loss. We sat down with lead singer-songwriter Kelly Zutrau to talk about how their co-founding member's departure impacted the band's dynamic, how she continues to deal with intense performance anxiety, and how she witnessed a breakup at a rollerskating rink soundtracked to "Unbreak My Heart".

Ambient/Indie/Rock/Hip Hop/House. Another paradigm shift to bring me into line with today's DJ climate: I've added my MacBook Pro to my Deejay setup and started using software to mix tracks along with my hardware. After a month of playing around and testing settings and different software, I've produced my first mix. By far the best thing about this is being able to mix so many different genres with relative ease. For today's music scene and for your average listener, they don't want to listen to pure electronic music for an hour: now's zeitgeist is much more a combination of vocals, indie/alternative, house and electronica. A genre I'd call Indietronica. Software brings with it the ability to quickly choose tracks and mix them without having to prepare extensive tracklists and burning cds/ripping onto USB. This mix contains so many different styles: rock, hip-hop, downtempo, indie-rock, electronica, house and electronic funk. The possibilities for future mixes have suddenly got so much wider. I'm a happy bunny ☺ The tracks selected here were selected from the Hype Machine's most popular tracks of June 2011. There are some absolutely stunning tracks of which my favourites include Washed Out's ‘Amor Fati', Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaur's ‘Garden', the remix of Parov Stelar's ‘Booty Swing' and two tracks from Foster the People. Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side 2. A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It 3. Nero - My Eyes 4. Birdy Nam Nam - Defiant Order 5. Sebastian (feat. Mayer Hawthorne)- Love in Motion 6.
