Inspired by the Sandman re-read that Joe and Todd are doing at Longbox Heroesv (@longboxheroes), we look at a tangentially-related series, the 1993 series Stanley and His Monster, by Phil Foglio. We give a brief history of Stanley's creation, in the mid 1960s in the funny animal comic Fox and the Crow, how Dennis the Menace/Ralphie Phillips mash-up Stanley Dover meets his pet monster and how he has to hide him from his parents. Then, we discuss Foglio's work before this book, both at DC (Angel and the Ape, Plastic Man) and elsewhere (Buck Godot, Zap Gun for Hire). And explain what happened in Sandman: Season of Mists sets up the mini-series. We do an issue-by-issue breakdown, with all the main characters, including some guests from the DCU proper and what would become the Vertigo section of the spinner rack. We close out by mentioning more recent appearances by Stanley and the Monster, including the great Scooby Doo Team-Up, which features Angel, Ape, The Inferior Five, The Maniaks and a couple suprise cameos as the bad guys. If you miss the funny wing of DC comics, look for these books in your local comic shop. Don't think the mini-series is available digitally yet.

After many years, I'm happy to say we have got Mark Waid as a guest. And what better subject to discuss, fresh off his new book Dark Crisis - Big Bang, than the concept of continuity and the multiverse. Why has the idea of multiple worlds become so popular in the last decade or so, when it was something often thought as troublesome years earlier? We discuss how omnipresent it is now, in comics, movies and more. We also talk about the original Crisis in 1985, including Mark editing an issue of Amazing Heroes all about the post-Crisis landscape at DC following the series. There's also talk about Hypertime and other attempts DC made to try and “simplify” continuity over the years and how things are going the other way now. There's also a deep-dive on things like The Super Sons, The Inferior Five, Cancelled Comics Cavalcade and more. We also discuss Mark's current books at DC, including Batman-Superman World's Finest, Batman vs Robin and the upcoming Shazam (don't call him Captain Marvel).

NewsWe start out the news with the return of Gary Larsen and The Far Side. What does this mean for cartooning? For satire? Well hopefully good things. Speaking of nostalgia we jump into full 90's excitement as we talk about Seinfeld moving to Netflix. Then it is onto Peacock. That is right NBC is launching its own streaming service, and we are Sooooooooo Excited about it. Ok, not really.Michael's NewsFor our weird news of the week, Michael brings the story of the government admitting that recently posted videos of UFOs are indeed real. To make things even more strange. Blink-182 had a hand in the videos being posted. Comics This week we jump into comics with a alternative take on the classic GI Joe franchise with G.I.Joe #1. Then we visit a small town who seems to have a problem with the Devil trying to invade with Steeple #1. Next up, the invasion has happen and millions are dead. So what is next? Inferior Five #1 has the answer. Finally its a family affair and JJ and Henry Abrams present Spider-Man #1.Comics Agenda is hosted by Anelise (Twitter@Anelise.Farris ), Michael (Twitter@mokepf7) and Greg (Twitter@Comicsportsgeek). Are Superhero Films in Trouble or Will They Be Triumphant in 2018 & Beyond?

On this 232nd episode of Heroes (Monday, April 2nd, 2018), Jon Schnepp, Robert Meyer Burnett, John Rocha and Jay Washington discuss the following from the world of Heroes and Villians: Are Superhero films in trouble for 2018 and beyond? Outside of Marvel studios, every other company has had a very hard time establishing their brand, let alone a cohesive universe. What is the problem? Are the studio executives in charge so out of touch that they are fumbling and tripping up what should be the easiest delivery imaginable? The comics have decades of incredible stories, with lots of production design and art for a jumping off point. We have seen many films be shut down and reshot, due to executives second guessing their own audience, and serving up a giant failure sandwich almost every time. When will these failures add up to letting the filmmakers actually do their jobs or is it ultimately the executive whose job it is to make these final and mostly fatal decisions. We remember the failures, but what about the success when this has happened? Mike Allred’s Madman, Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg, Frank Miller’s Martha Washington. Are some of these characters not built for this kind of storytelling? Are certain books and comic books not translatable to the big screen or as a series or mini-series? Bizarre characters like Marvel’s Foolkiller, DC’s Inferior Five, Image’s The Darkness. What makes certain characters so easy to identify with, while others are too remote or too goofy or too unrealistic? With these massive shared universes, with many companies planning out these giant event films years in advance that all tie in with each other, is this the way to continue, or should stand-alone adventures be the new franchises? We have both right now, but companies follow the money. Similar to comics, these characters must have a turnover rate every few years to remain fresh and current. What worked for the 90’s is out in the early aughts, as is the same right now. We have actors and actresses who have lived as certain characters for over a decade, and now even entire worlds of characters must be reborn? His new book Hero-a-Go-Go: Campy Comic Books, Crimefighters and Culture of the Swinging Sixties comes out from TwoMorrows Publishing next week, and the two discuss this project's genesis and the significance of the camp cultural phenomenon. This text stands out because Eury doesn't limit himself to just comics, but instead he looks at camp from a wider vista, revealing its convergence among television, film, toys, cartoons, music, and everyday consumable products. In Hero-a-Go-Go, readers will find in-depth discussions of such subjects as Metamorpho, The Inferior Five, Jerry Lewis comics, Monkeemania, Not Brand Echh, Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Herbie the Fat Fury, Captain Action, the TV Green Hornet, M.F. Enterprise's Captain Marvel, The Cowsills, JFK and LBJ in comics, the ill-fated Harvey Thrillers, and, of course, the Batman television series. As Michael reveals over the course of this interview, Hero-a-Go-Go is intended for diverse audiences, written as both an informed introduction and a chronicle for remembrance.
