Episode 195What do you think about para-church ministries? This is one of those subjects where if you ask a hundred Christians, you may get a hundred different answers. In this episode of the Removing Barriers podcast we talk with recurring guest Shawn Henly about the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF), a worldwide college campus organization that claims it seeks to establish and advance witnessing opportunities of students and faculty. If that sounds a bit like Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ), you would be right. But what many of us do not realize is that these organizations, though established with good intentions, are completely infiltrated with unbiblical ideologies like feminism, woke-ism, and racism. We must expose these things to encourage reform and repentance. Shawn Henly of Cross Crusaders has been actively trying to warn and inform Christians of IVCF's departure from the scriptures for a long time now, and he joins us to peel back the rot underneath the veneer of christian evangelism. Don't miss this conversation--it will be a wake-up call for us to be vigilant against the works of darkness and take nothing for granted.Listen to the Removing Barriers Podcast here:Spotify: https://cutt.ly/Ega8YeI Apple Podcast: https://cutt.ly/Vga2SVdEdifi: https://cutt.ly/Meec7nsvYouTube: https://cutt.ly/mga8A77Podnews: https://podnews.net/podcast/i4jxoSee all our platforms: https://removingbarriers.netContact us:Email us: https://removingbarriers.net/contactFinancially support the show: https://removingbarriers.net/donateAffiliates:Book Shop: https://bookshop.org/shop/removingbarriersChristian Books . com: https://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/home?event=AFF&p=1236574See all our affiliates: https://removingbarriers.net/affiliatesNotes:InterVarsity: https://intervarsity.org/Cross Crusaders: https://www.crosscrusaders.com/
Ever since I started this podcast, I've wanted my friend Mark to come on to tell his story. But even more has happened since early 2022, so I'm actually glad he finally agreed to come over and do this. It's a story of a common upbringing in high control pentacostalism to the lighter theologies of Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship at the beginning. But life got pretty damn scary for Mark after he joined the Navy while in medical school. After seeing up-close the horrors of war, he came home with his faith severely challenged. And then we almost lost him to a rare form of lung cancer that severely affected his life. But Mark has rallied, deconstructed, and is living an incredible life today. It's an epic tale that I just couldn't edit down because it has so much insight to offer us. And as you'll hear, it's a story that Mark is still processing today. Rev. Milly Silencio border crossing pilgrimage started when she was 3. Her mom made an audacious decision to cross over from Peru to the US to protect her child. Abraham and Sarah made an audacious decision to pack up and take the whole clan to move across borders. Jesus himself made an audacious decision to cross over to our broken, corrupt world which did not welcome him. Listen to each of their stories and discover your calling as a faithful ezer. See the pain, the corruption, and the needs. Be the empowering ezer presence assisting them to have their longings met. What has been your pilgrimage/ journey with God? How is it similar or different to Abraham or Sarah's story? Miluska E. (Milly) Silencio is many things. As an educator, a spiritual advisor, a mentor, and a Dreamer. She founded Hoping Greatly, where she uplifts others through her story of resilience as an undocumented immigrant and co-founder of IVCF alumni of the Mentor Movement. Milly is a licensed clergy with the Evangelical Covenant Church and the former Executive Pastor at Reconcile Brooklyn. As a writer, she contributed her story Restaurando Esperanza in “Keeping the Faith: Reflections on Politics & Christianity in the Era of Trump & Beyond.” She is also an active contributor to My UndocuLife. She is a board member of WOW! In her free time, she can be found catching up on shows with her hubby, having piña colada cheers with friends, and coaching over a delicious NYC meal discovery. Even though the 4 of us went to an actual "top-notch" university, UC San Diego, our involvement with Inter-Varstiy Christian Fellowship meant our faith was in constant action and activity. We didn't have to deal with a university-wide culture of racism, misogyny, and anti-LGBTQIA hatred, but we embedded ourselves in a clatch of moderately conservative christianity that served to tamp down significant parts of our identities and sexuality. For Tim and Kevin, their experiences as closeted gay men added one more layer of shame, fear, and pain. Even still we were leaders in IVCF. Kevin was even a staff person for 5 years. We lived our faiths in "radical" ways before we all deconstructed to varying degrees of faith and agnosticism. It is this experience as the best kind of christian in an academic and scientific setting that gave me (in my mind) the authority and the cred to teach at APU, even after I no longer believed in God. And even though we at UC San Diego got incredible educations, we did not escape the harm done to us by evangelical culture. Our special guest is Sarah Shin, author of Beyond Colorblind: Reedeming our Ethnic Journey. Sarah is associate national director of evangelism for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF). She is a speaker and trainer in ethnicity, evangelism, and the arts, and she previously served IVCF as an area director in Boston and as a regional coordinator of multiethnicity. A fine artist and painter, Sarah has a master’s degree in theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a master’s in city planning and development from MIT. She and her husband live in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For a generation or so, society has tried to be colorblind. People say they don’t see race. But this approach has limitations. In our broken world, ethnicity and racial identity are often points of pain and injustice. We can’t ignore that God created us with our ethnic identities. We bring all of who we are, including our ethnicity and cultural background, to our identity and work as God's ambassadors. Ethnicity and evangelism specialist Sarah Shin reveals how our brokenness around ethnicity can be restored and redeemed, for our own wholeness and also for the good of others. When we experience internal transformation in our ethnic journeys, God propels us outward in a reconciling witness to the world. Ethnic healing can demonstrate God's power and goodness and bring good news to others. Showing us how to make space for God's healing of our ethnic stories, Shin helps us grow in our crosscultural skills, manage crosscultural conflict, pursue reconciliation and justice, and share the gospel as ethnicity-aware Christians. Jesus offers hope for healing, both for ourselves and for society. Discover how your ethnic story can be transformed for compelling witness and mission.
THIS IS PART 2 - Our Q&A session with Mark Charles. Please go back and listen to Part 1 first, which is the lecture, to better understand the context of these questions. Our special guest is Jeff Crosby, the publisher of InterVarsity Press (IVP). InterVarsity Press began right before World War II as a small service branch of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) campus ministry. Today, after years of development and growth, IVP has nearly one hundred staff, working together to publish books, Bible studies, and booklets every year that equip, edify, and challenge people in every generation. Crosby got his start in the Christian book industry as the owner with his wife, Cindy, of a Logos bookstore in Bloomington, Indiana, from 1983 to 1993. He went on to become the executive director of the Association of Logos Bookstores from 1993 to 1996 and was in executive sales and marketing roles with the Christian divisions of Ingram Book Company for two years before he started at IVP. “InterVarsity Press books challenged, stimulated and nourished my faith in Christ and my understanding of Christian theology and spirituality long before I came to work with its people in Downers Grove,” Crosby said. “It’s been a privilege to serve alongside incredibly visionary and committed colleagues for the past eighteen years as we’ve published resources for the university, the church and the world in response to God’s call on us. I’m grateful for the opportunity to step into the twin roles of IVP publisher and IVCF vice president and be a part of leading us into the next chapters of our work together.” Crosby received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ball State University in 1983 and his master’s in Leadership Studies from North Central College in 2009. As IVP’s director of sales and marketing Crosby managed sales to domestic retail accounts and the international distribution partnerships in England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and other countries. He was instrumental in launching the direct marketing program for IVP Academic’s award-winning Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture reference series, and was a primary drafter of IVP’s digital publishing strategy in 2008. Throughout his career Crosby has led numerous workshops and spoken at conferences on the topics of publishing, marketing and management. In both 2015 and again this year, he has served the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) as the content creation leader for the sessions of its ECPA PUBu events. Located in Westmont, Illinois, InterVarsity Press has been publishing thoughtful Christian books for more than 70 years. An extension of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, IVP is a leading Christian publisher with a respected history providing resources that strengthen the church, encourage individuals, and shape the academy. As an extension of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, InterVarsity Press serves those in the university, the church, and the world by publishing resources that equip and encourage people to follow Jesus as Savior and Lord in all of life.
Nikki is on staff at InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and serves as the Program Director for Urbana, a student missions conference that gathers 20,000 students from 120 different countries. She consults and speaks for a variety of campuses, churches and organizations and currently sits on the board of Mission Year, serving as their chairperson of the multi-ethnicity committee. Much of her insights stem from experiences living among the poor people in the slums of Nairobi, Cairo, and Bangkok. Prior to entering ministry, Nikki spent several years working as an engineer in Silicon Valley. She is the co-editor of More Than Serving Tea, a collection of essays, stories and poems looking at the intersection of race, gender and faith for Asian American women.
