June 20, 2016. Penn Hills, Pennsylvania. The Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families order the Penn Hills Police Department to remove multiple children from the home of a woman named Patricia Fowler. The authorities soon realize that two of Patricia's children, 17-year old twins Ivon and Inisha Fowler, are no longer in her custody and an investigation reveals that they have not been seen for around 10-15 years. Patricia provides conflicting stories about what happened to the twins, but even though she faces legal trouble for her deception, there is no evidence to prove that she harmed her children and investigators are unable to pin down how and when Ivon and Inisha went missing. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we chronicle the unusual disappearance of the Fowler twins, which somehow managed to go unnoticed for several years. This week we've got another installment in our Shop Talk series and I'm excited to welcome Splendid Cycles co-owners Barb and Joel Grover. This duo has been working in the local bike scene since the 1980s and came up through the ranks as employees of Bike Gallery, which was one of the largest bicycle retail chains in the country. Joel was a product analyst and buyer for many years at Bike Gallery and when cargo bikes first came on the scene in the U.S. in the mid to late aughts, he and Barb had a feeling they weren't reaching their potential being sold in traditional bike shops. So they decided to take a big risk: They left Bike Gallery in 2009 to create a shop that would sell only cargo bikes — and despite being laughed at by some of their peers, Splendid Cycles opened one year later. In 2014, four years after they opened, their business was so strong they moved from their tiny storefront on lower SE Belmont to a larger location in an industrial building in the central eastside right next to the SE 4th Avenue entrance of the Springwater Corridor path. That's where we recorded this episode (and just FYI you might notice from the audio that we did so with our masks on). Before we sat down for the interview, Barb and Joel gave me a tour of the shop and we talked about a few of the bikes they sell. We also went out front where Barb explained to me why they installed a fresh water spigot that's free and open for anyone to use 24/7. In our interview, you'll get to know a bit more about Barb and Joel, and you'll understand why they're so deeply appreciated in our community. Episode 44 Kimberly Avila32 year old Kimberly Avila vanished in Brownsville, TX in the early morning hours of May 13, 2017. Kimberly was born Ramiro Avila, Jr, and as a transgender woman, was no stranger to mistreatement at the hands of others. As a sex worker, the danger she faced was only compounded. Did the fact Kim was transgender, or that she worked as a sex worker factor in to her disappearance, or are those details simply red herrings? 5 years after she vanished, it seems that we are no closer to finding out what happened to her, and her family is desperate for answers. There have been no confirmed sightings of Kim since she vanished despite being well-known in the local LGBTQ community, and her bank account and social security card have not been used. Kim's sister Ivon discusses Kim's case in this episode. At the time of her disappearance, Kim was described as being 5'8-6'0, 200-220 pounds, and Hispanic with brown hair & eyes; she was last seen wearing a dressy black short-sleeved blouse, a black skirt, black fishnet stockings, black stiletto heels, a black wig, and gray contact lenses. There is a $10,000 reward in this case.
