In this episode we are joined by Jack Stewart, a US Navy F/A-18 pilot turned best-selling author. Jack is the author of 3 (soon to be 4) aviation action thriller novels, and he's on his way to being ranked among the greats in the genre, in our humble opinion. It also happens that Mr. Stewart is a bit of a watch guy in his own right! We talk about the books, the flying, the watches, and perhaps most important... how he got his callsign; "FARLEY". This is another fun one. Check it out!
What really goes on during a special operations mission? The push for electric vehicle adoption got a bit more uncertain with the election of Donald Trump. While reports of “EV death” have been greatly exaggerated, sales growth has slowed, and carmakers have pulled back on aggressive targets. Now, it seems Marketplace's Meghan McCarty Carino may be part of that trend. She recently spoke with Jack Stewart, a former Marketplace reporter and the man who convinced her to buy an EV, about her decision to trade in her EV for a gas-powered car.

Jack Stewart is a grown-up homeschooler who now homeschools his kids. We met Jack at HEFF in 2024 and enjoyed talking with him. This is our second episode with Jack, and you should consider starting with the first episode we recorded together. In this episode, we sit down with Jack Stewart to discuss how technology affects our daily lives and how setting boundaries around internet use can improve emotional well-being. Jack introduces the idea of technology as a "social appetite suppressant," explaining how it can fill emotional gaps but also lead to a lack of real-world connection. Together, we explore strategies for creating healthier habits around technology. We also dive into homeschooling and unschooling, focusing on how families can manage education outside of the traditional system. Jack shares his passion for Plato's philosophy and explains how it inspired the development of his educational board game. The game combines art, languages, and math to help learners connect different subjects and holistically explore education. If you're interested in improving your tech habits, learning more about homeschooling, or curious about using educational philosophy in creative projects like game design, this episode offers practical insights and real-life examples.
Jack Stewart is a grown-up homeschooler. We explore how self-paced learning has shaped his social life and personal development. Jack's upbringing was guided by his mother's approach to homeschooling, which fostered meaningful friendships and an entrepreneurial spirit that set the stage for his success. These early experiences of forming deep connections outside traditional settings have carried through to his adult life.Jack also shares his thoughts on the balance between structured activities and free play and how family-centered, attachment-based learning can sometimes offer advantages over conventional schools. His reflections challenge common perceptions of education and the social structures that accompany it.Additionally, Jack talks about his move away from technology and how reducing his internet use has helped him form deeper, more authentic connections. From managing technology within his family to pursuing hands-on projects like music and board game development, Jack gives insight into a lifestyle that emphasizes focus, personal growth, and real-world interactions. This conversation covers voluntary learning, the influence of community and nature in education, and the effects of living with less reliance on technology.

In this episode of Lehto Files, I examine two recent UAP sightings - one over LAX near a tanker and F35s supporting Air Force One and another seen by Navy pilots over the Gulf of Mexico. On 22 December 2023, plane spotters live streaming LAX captured video of a tic-tac-shaped object near an aircraft refueling and escorting Air Force One. Though quickly scrubbed from the internet, I preserved and analyzed the intriguing footage. In a new interview, former F-18 pilot Jack Stewart reveals he and his wingman encountered a similar 40-foot-long spherical UAP with incredible flight characteristics over the Gulf. I examine these credible eyewitness accounts and speculate on the nature of these unidentified phenomena. Stay tuned to my podcast for insights on these latest military pilot UAP encounters.Podcast published on 02Jan 2024.
Wait a minute, TOPGUN only trains students to become instructors? Turns out, there's quite a few details the Tom Cruise movies missed when it comes to the most elite flying academy in the world - but when it comes to real world dogfighting, it's not all about academics. It's truly a mental game, where you mean to outwit the opposite pilot before they can get the jump on you. Just take it from Jack Stewart - after he passed through TOPGUN he too became an instructor, before pivoting into commercial aviation. In Part Two of his discussion with Mike, Jack digs into Hollywood myths, real-world dangers, and whether or not there we really are alone in the universe. Jack Stewart always wanted to fly. Following in his pilot father's footsteps, he pursued a career in aviation at the U.S. Naval Academy before serving 23 years as a fighter pilot, flying combat missions from three different aircraft carriers and deploying to Afghanistan as a member of an Air Force Tactical Air Control Party. He's also a graduate of the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, better known as TOPGUN, both for it's esteemed reputation of bringing up the finest dogfighters in the country, as well as the film series starring Tom Cruise, of course. When you tell people you graduated from TOPGUN, it doesn't take long for the conversation to wander from real-life situations to whimsical Hollywood schlock, because c'mon - who doesn't want to know more about TOPGUN? Is the real program anything like what's in the movies? What kind of flight risks are people not aware of, and how does new technology help make dogfighting safer in modern warfare? And most importantly - did Jack ever buzz the tower, or is that just Hollywood bunk? ---------- Get Your Copy of Jack's Book, 'Unknown Rider' on Amazon at http://tinyurl.com/t33vbtyy Support Jack Stewart - Website: https://jackstewartbooks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jackstewartbooks X: https://twitter.com/JackStewartBook ---------- Sponsors: Contingency Medical Don't Wait! After another necessary break, we are delighted to bring you this timely, advent-apt episode on cultivating the practice of loving and delighting in God, as part of our podcast series on the rituals and rhythms in home education. A cool millennial, singer/songwriter and theology graduate, who also happens to be a single father home educating his 3 beautiful children the UK. In this episode, Jack shares eloquently how he uses Psalm 111.2 and Psalm 127.5 to create a daily liturgy that frames the context of his home Ed philosophy. Before philosophising on the joy and practice of putting Christ at the centre of his home education life, Jack and I go deep as we exchange notes on the challenges of being single, Christian home educating parents. We discuss how his faith helped him to find the courage to heal by being fully present for his children, in spite of the curveball of an unexpected separation. Thrown in the mix for good measure, are deeply moving audio clips of Jack leading his children in worship in their daily liturgy. If there was ever an episode that beckoned you to stop, pause and let your own soul draw breathe, this is the one. ☕️

Eric Bishop, thriller writer, joined The Protectors to talk about his recently released book, THE BODY MAN. We were joined by a fellow author Jack Stewart (who is also an F-18 Fighter Pilot!!). We hit on a bunch of great topics. The Book: Who protects the secrets of the Presidency? The Body Man.And he's vanished without a trace. In a town that's obsessed with dark secrets, where the currency of power is information, The White House has kept a huge one for decades. Charged with the task of protecting and defending the Office of the Presidency from threats both outside and in, the keeper of secrets—the Body Man—has been in the shadows since the 1960s.The Body Man has been a unique protector of American presidents ever since a previous well-known president used the first Body Man to usher women, diplomats, and other heads of state into the White House via a secret tunnel. The Body Man is drawn from the Secret Service, but he isn't on the classic protective detail, and he reports to no one. Once his term is over, he's given a huge payout and a one-way ticket to anywhere on Earth. With a CIA conspiracy buff named Zed and The Body Man's aged neighbor Rose, former US Army Ranger and FBI Special Agent Eli Payne and his new probationary agent Kat Stone must find the Body Man before it's too late—and the trail may lead directly to the Oval Office itself.Show Sponsors: Faraday Defense https://shop.faradaydefense.com/ Health to the Rescue https://www.healthtotherescue.com/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)

As the coronavirus swept around the world, work and education moved to the cloud, with video meetings and online document sharing. Our leisure time relied on cloud servers to stream TV shows and movies. There are a few big companies that stand to benefit. Amazon, Microsoft and Alibaba are the big cloud providers. Google is a relative upstart, but it’s now rolling out new services for businesses as fast as it can. Jack Stewart speaks with Owen Rogers, a research director with S&P Global Market Intelligence.

If you were hoping to get shopping delivered via Shipt today, you may be out of luck. Shipt, which is owned by Target, pays gig economy workers to deliver goods from brick-and-mortar stores to consumers’ homes around the country. Those workers aren’t staff, so they don’t get a salary or hourly wage. They’re paid by the job. Shipt is now planning to expand its use of an algorithm to determine how much they get paid. It’ll take into account a lot of factors, like how busy a store is and how bad traffic is. But the calculation is opaque, and workers would like more transparency. They’re boycotting the app today. Jack Stewart speaks with Marketplace’s workplace culture reporter, Meghan McCarty Carino.

There’s a national conversation going on about race and inequality, and that includes at work. A lot of companies are holding internal listening sessions to start to address systemic racism. And because of the pandemic, many of those tough conversations are happening via videoconference. For some, it may be easier to have tough conversations from the comfort of their own home. Marketplace’s Jack Stewart speaks with Kira Banks, a professor of psychology at Saint Louis University, where she runs the Race and Intergroup Dynamics Laboratory.

Our computers and cellphones are an increasingly huge part of how we work, socialize and even organize protests. In a natural disaster, those communication tools become even more important but often less reliable. That’s particularly an issue for first responders, who are soon going to have to start dealing with this year’s inevitable hurricanes and wildfires. Marketplace’s Jack Stewart speaks with Craig Fugate, a former FEMA administrator who now consults for goTenna, one of the companies working on “mesh network” technology.

Jack Stewart: The Birth of Graffiti Art," is an exhibition of never-before-shown photographs by an Atlanta artist who fought under General George Patton in World War Two and documented the early years of graffiti writing and painting on subway cars in New York City. The exhibition at 378 in Candler Park (on Clifton Road behind Flying Biscuit) runs through Saturday, October 19. A closing party Saturday evening, which is free and open to the public, will feature music by W8ing4UFOs. Participating in the podcast discussion are Randy Gue, Curator of Political & Historical Collections at Emory's Rose Library, and two local graffiti writers and historians, Antar Fierce and Mendez MadClout. The discussion covers the historical importance of Stewart's photographs (his PhD dissertation on graffiti art is "the Bible" on the subject) and the origins and stylistic development of graffiti, which in the late 1970s and early '80s made the leap from subway cars to major galleries in Europe and America, as well as to the streets of Atlanta, Fay Gold Gallery and 688.

Electric cars are labelled as ‘zero emissions’ vehicles – but what does that really mean? Jack Stewart puts your questions about EVs to the experts. According to a new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, just how green your EV is compared to a petrol or diesel vehicle, depends on how the electricity powering the battery was produced, as well as how cleanly the battery itself was manufactured. Jack also explores what could be a compelling alternative to plugging in – filing up with Hydrogen, and creating nothing but water as exhaust. 2pm ET / 1pm CT / 12pm MT / 11am PT (Outside US: Dial 00 + 1 + 714-464-4891) Viki Winterton interviews Barrett Cobb! Barrett Cobb is a singer, painter, flutist, and now author living in New York City. She has performed as mezzo-soprano soloist with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Chorale, the Sine Nomine Singers and Baroque Orchestra, the AIMS Orchestra, and the Orchester Landesteater Dessau. She has appeared frequently in recital in both New York and Paros, Greece. Her paintings have been exhibited in three one-woman shows in New York City and in two group shows at the Broome Street Gallery. She was twice a prize winner in juried transparent watercolor shows at the Church of the Covenant in Manhattan. She studied painting at the Aegean Center for the Arts in Paros, Greece, the American Academy of Design, in New York, and privately with Alice Meyer Wallace, Wade Schuman, Jane Morris Pack, and Jack Stewart. In her new bestseller, Walk Shepherdess, Walk, Barrett has given a fresh look at this age-old classic nursery rhyme/folk song. “Shepherdess Walk” was one of many poems in Nursery Rhymes of London Town, written by Eleanor Farjeon in 1916. In 1919, Eleanor composed and added music to her world-famous nursery rhyme. When Barrett Cobb was a child, her mother taught her this folk song. Barrett has taken this beautiful melody and arranged it for voice, flute, and piano. In addition to singing this song, Barrett has created beautiful paintings–which correspond to all of the phrases of the song–so readers can follow along visually with the musical performance.
Online Privacy Issues -- An Overview As online privacy issues mount in the U.S., regulators are pulling back. Earlier this year, Congress repealed the privacy rules the FCC passed under former Chairman Tom Wheeler. The rules would have required ISPs to obtain subscribers' permission before using their data for commercial purposes. The ISPs argued that they should be entitled to the same free reign over consumer data that large tech companies enjoy. But, of course, the FCC doesn't have jurisdiction to directly regulate tech companies. Jules Polonetsky discusses online privacy issues and where U.S. privacy law and policy now stand in light of recent data breaches. He also explains what consumers can do to protect their data from hackers. Bio Jules Polonetsky (@JulesPolonetsky) serves as CEO of the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF). The storm knocked off Puerto Rico's entire electrical grid leaving millions without power. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai released a statement saying 95% of Puerto Rico's cell sites are out of service. The island is running out of supplies. Many were thunderstruck over the weekend by President Trump's silence about Puerto Rico. Instead, Trump spent the weekend news cycle railing against NBA and NFL players taking a knee against the national anthem. Tom McKay has the story in Gizmodo. Mother of slain sex trafficking victim testifies before Senate Commerce Committee Yvonne Ambrose, the mother of the 16-year-old girl who was raped and murdered by a 32-year-old Backpage.com user, testified on the Hill. Ambrose appeared before the Senate Commerce Committee in support of the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESA). The bi-partisan bill, introduced by Senator Rob Portman, would hold internet companies more accountable for content on their sites. Currently, the Communications Decency Act shields websites from liability for content posted by third parties. That's what enabled Backpage.com to post ads placed by criminals selling opportunities to sexually abuse children. So the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act would hold web companies more accountable. It would do so by making them liable for knowingly hosting sex trafficking content. Sabrina Eaton reports on cleveland.com. The EU is set to release its first report on the efficacy of the U.S.-EU Privacy Shield on October 4th. The Privacy Shield allows data transfers between the U.S. and EU, which have entirely different standards when it comes to protecting consumer privacy. Privacy Shield replaced a previous framework that the EU overturned last year because it didn't provide enough oversight over U.S. mass surveillance practices. Under the Privacy Shield, the U.S. is supposed to appoint an Ombudsman to review the U.S.'s mass surveillance tactics. However, the U.S. has yet to appoint anyone to the ombudsman role. Is Thomas More's vision of an ideal society becoming reality in modern-day California? The Forum travels to Singularity University at the heart of Silicon Valley to ask why California keeps attracting utopian thinkers who want to use advanced technology to solve humanity's biggest challenges. Jack Stewart is joined by forecaster Paul Saffo, Chair of Future Studies at Singularity University, Ryan Mullenix, partner at NBBJ Architecture, Krista Donaldson, CEO of Silicon Valley healthcare start up D-Rev, and Colin Milburn, Chair in Science and the Humanities at University of California, Davis. Thomas More's Utopia, published 500 years ago this month, is full of radical ideas and has provided food for thought to generations of people trying to find new ways to organise society. On his fictitious island More created a vivid mosaic of places, people and their customs and they have proven to be an inspiration not just for philosophers and politicians but also for writers. To mark the anniversary, BBC World Service and PEN International have asked three young authors, Rebecca F. John, Jose Pablo Salas and Lea Sauer, to take Utopia as a starting point for a new short story. Mr. More's Wondrous Islands also includes a couple of intriguing passages from the original book. It is introduced by Jack Stewart, the readers are John Dougall, Bettrys Jones, Martina Laird and William Marquez and the producer is Radek Bosketty.

KOYAAAAAAAAANISQAAAAATSI!!! We're getting very serious and talking documentaries today instead of all these silly entertaining films like Star Wars or Rocky. No, this week is about proper films, so who better than podcasting jokesmith artists Jack Stewart (as host) and Phil Sharman from Wikishuffle, joined by Failed Critics film buff Owen Hughes, to tackle these serious and not at all funny films. Today these very serious men tackle early 1980's artful look at society, KOYAANISQATSI, as nominated by Dino Leone, and Jack's own nomination, the slightly tragic MARWENCOL. We're banking on the fact you can't pronounce those, otherwise what a silly title this episode has! Also the group tackle their favourite DOCUMENTARIES, talk some of the suggestions as to the best documentaries from PAF fans on Twitter, duke out what they think of Netflix's MAKING A MURDERER & podcast SERIAL and finally Jack tests Owen & Phil on a docu-special QUESTION TIME. Who will triumph? Tune in to find out! Oh and see if you can... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
El Niño is releasing vast quantities of heat normally stored in the Pacific, causing floods, droughts and fires. Adam Rutherford discusses the latest with our El Niño expert Roland Pease. This weather event arrives every 2-7 years but it's hard to work out how profound it will be. Back in May last year, the Met Office climate scientist Adam Scaife correctly predicted an El Niño. He returns to give an overview of this phenomenon. How does an altered weather pattern in the Pacific end up altering the weather in Cumbria. Tim Stockdale at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and Richard Allan at Reading University explain the science behind the current events. The rains are coming to drought-ridden California as a result of El Niño. Jack Stewart explains why this is not entirely a good thing. Professor Sue Page from Leicester University and Professor Martin Wooster from KCL study the Indonesian fires exacerbated by an El Niño event. They describe the devastating effects of these fires. An estimated 15,000 death can be attributed to the previous El Niño burning and it has added 300 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
Professor Jim Skea, from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London, joins Jack Stewart in the studio and brings his insight from the Paris climate talks. Paul Younger, the Rankine Chair of Engineering and Professor of Energy Engineering at the University of Glasgow, talks about geothermal energy and its potential as a renewable energy source, particularly in Ethiopia. Mark Jacobson, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Stanford, argues for a 100% switch to renewable energy sources. Tadj Orzesczyn, Professor of Energy and Environment at University College London, talks to us from the perspective of energy demand. If we can reduce this, then we can reduce the amount of energy we need to produce in the first place. (Photo: Ferrybridge C power station, near Knottingley 2015. Credit: OLI SCARFF/AFP/Getty Images)
Meeeeery Christmas, everyone! Yes it's that time of year. Finish that mince pie. Put down the glass of sherry. Turn off Downton Abbey. PICK A FLICK! brings you festive cheer to warm the cockles with host Tony Black joined by the Wikishuffle boys aka Jack Stewart, Chris Wallace & Phil Sharman, to talk Christmas movies. Well, one Christmas movie in Richard Curtis rom-com LOVE ACTUALLY, which Chris & Phil were looking forward to revisiting in advance - will they actually agree with Tony & Jack's lack of fondness for this beloved film? Elsewhere, nominated by Steph Gabb, they look at 1974's PAPER MOON from Peter Bogdanovich, which has a particular bittersweet resonance for Phil. Did they all love it? Plus the guys take a look at some of the best and worst CHRISTMAS FILMS out there, discussing a few personal favourites, before in QUESTION TIME Tony tests their festive film knowledge - which of the Wikishufflers will come out on top? We hope you join us while having a wonderful Christmas! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Do you want to hear a magic trick? How many C's are there in Failed Critics? Answer: Four! Specifically, Owen Hughes, Phil Sharman, Andrew Brooker and special guest host, Jack Stewart. I will leave it to your imagination to work out what the 'C' stands for... ...All right, it was 'critics', of course! Failed ones, but what else could I have possibly meant..? Unfortunately there's no Steve Norman on this week's episode, but the award winning duo of Phil and Jack from the comedy podcast Wikishuffle join Owen and Brooker to review two new releases. Whilst Phil prepares a rant on M. Night Shyamalan's latest twisty-turny-twist-again-turn-again horror The Visit, the group also review British gangster movie Legend, starring Tom Hardy as Ronnie Cray and Tom Hardy as Reggie Kray. Also on the podcast: Brooker walks the line with Oscar winning documentary Man On Wire; Phil tentatively recommends Jonathan King’s (yes, that one) self-produced Vile Pervert: The Musical; and Owen shouts from the stands about indie... Jack Stewart heads to Los Angeles, home to many of America's rich and famous, to explore what impact wealth has on our moral behaviour. Hollywood often has plenty to say about the corrupting influence of money, but can science tell us even more. Professor Paul Piff of the University of California explains his research, which finds that the richer a person becomes the more selfish, narcissistic and less generous they tend to be. However, not everyone is convinced that the American dream is a recipe for immoral behaviour, with opinions expressed by some rather unusual contributors – straight from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We are alive, we are consciousness, we are reviewing Neil Blomkamp's latest science fiction action thriller, Chappie. By "we", that of course means podcast regulars Steve Norman and Owen Hughes, who are joined this week by Andrew Brooker (for the second week in a row) and Jack Stewart from Not This Again making his Failed Critics debut. The news section this week sees the group discuss the hype (or apparent lack of) for the latest Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer and the announcement that Tim Burton will be remaking the... As our skies become more crowded Jack Stewart examines the long awaited modernisation of air traffic control. With traffic predicted to reach 17 million by 2030 more flights will mean more delays. For many a new approach to controlling flights is long overdue since aircraft still follow old and often indirect routes around the globe, communication between the ground and air is still by VHF radio, and any flexibility is heavily constrained by a fragmented airspace operated by many national authorities. Jack Stewart examines how aviation technologists have come up with a radical solution. It enables pilots, once airborne, to choose their own route. 'Free Routing', it is argued, will allow more direct flights, no planes to be caught up in holding patterns, reduced fuel emissions and flights departing and arriving on time. Crucially, free routing will enable a tripling of flights than currently we are capable of controlling. But will the ability of pilots to choose their own routes increase the risk of collision? Researchers argue it will in fact produce even safer skies. Jack Stewart visits NATS air traffic control centre that annually looks after the safety of over two million British airspace to hear how such a system could evolve. Jack finds out how free routing could work from the engineers at Indra UK – who are trialling such a system in airspace controlled by the NATS Prestwick air traffic control centre. In a new approach they are turning 'reactive' air traffic control into a more strategic approach with computer designed flight trajectories utilising much of the currently underused satellite navigation that is fitted on modern aircraft. It will enable aircraft to be safely spaced closer together and at the same time predict potential 'conflicts' of spacing much further ahead of the routes being taken, leaving less room for human error. And as automation begins to play a greater role in all aspects of flight planning and control is the era of pilotless planes moving a step closer? (Photo: NATS air traffic control centre. Jack Stewart meets the engineers who are building vehicles that drive themselves. He has a ride in Google's driverless car, which has no steering wheel and no pedals. Google's Chris Urmson explains the company's approach to autonomous vehicles. Jack visits Stanford University's driverless car project where professor Chris Gerdes shows him Shelley, an automated Audi that races around a track at speed as well as a human driver. Chris is collaborating with a philosopher to explore some of the difficult questions around autonomous vehicles, such as who is liable if there's an accident. Is it the human or the car? And ,Jack meets Josh Swirtes whose company, Peloton, is linking trucks together with the idea that they should have fewer accidents. (Photo: Jack Stewart in Stanford's University X1)
Most traffic accidents are caused by human error. Engineers are designing vehicles with built in sensors that send messages to other cars, trucks, bikes and even pedestrians, to prevent collisions happening. The idea is to make the vehicles react to whatever's going on faster than the human drivers. Jack Stewart drives around the university town of Ann Arbor, in Michigan, in some of the many vehicles that are fitted with experimental devices in the world's largest connected vehicles project. He finds out how the system works from researchers at UMTRI, the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute, including the director, professor Peter Sweatman and human factors expert Dr Jim Sayer, Kirk Steudle, Director, Michigan Department of Transportation and a resident who has had her car fitted with an experimental device. Proposition 23: Yes or No? Bob Epstein, Founder, Environmental Entrepreneurs Nancy Floyd, Manging Director, Nth Power Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers Tom Tanton, President, T2 & Associates Greg Dalton, Climate One - Moderator The night before an election that would decide the fate of California’s landmark climate change law, a panel of energy experts convened by Climate One debates whether AB 32 would catalyze or cripple the state’s economy. The measure before voters, Proposition 23, would suspend AB 32 until California achieves four consecutive quarters of unemployment below 5.5%. Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers and Technology Association, and Tom Tanton, President, T2 & Associates, argue that with California suffering 12.4% unemployment, now is not the time to burden business with additional regulation. “There’s a lot of pain and very little gain,” in pushing ahead with the law, Tanton says. Stewart agrees: “Do we want to go forward and have a growing economy and hold off on AB 32,” he asks, “or do we hobble the California economy and make it more difficult to employ the 2.3 million Californians who are out of work?” Nancy Floyd, Founder and Managing Director, Nth Power, and Bob Epstein, Founder, Environmental Entrepreneurs, counter that cleantech is the fastest growing job sector in California and critical to maintaining the state’s competitive edge globally. Floyd says that 500,000 green jobs have already been created in California, and that her venture firm alone had invested $200 million in 35 companies in the state. Epstein takes issue with claims by Stewart and Tanton that California’s climate change rules would subject the state’s businesses to onerous regulations and uncertainty. “This legislation lays out a 10-year plan. For an oil company, they tell you every place you need to be for 10 years.” Win or lose on Nov. 2, Epstein says the fight over Prop 23 has succeeded in mobilizing interests – environmentalists, venture capitalists, utilities, and tech firms – with a stake in the green economy. “What you have done, by bringing Prop 23 to the table, is you united a community that really needed to be united,” he says. In the Balance: Energy, Economy and Environment Part of The Chevron California Innovation Series Raj Atluru, Managing Director, Draper Fisher Jurvetson Ralph Cavanagh, Energy Co-director, Natural Resources Defense Council Cathy Reheis-Boyd, President, Western States Petroleum Association Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers and Technology Association Virgil Welch, Special Assistant to the Chairman, California Air Resources Board Greg Dalton, Climate One - Moderator The low-carbon economy is California’s future. But this panel of energy experts convened by Climate One disagrees on how fast that transition will take, and how it will impact the economy. Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers and Technology Association, and Cathy Reheis-Boyd, President, Western States Petroleum Association, repeatedly stress that California could be more business friendly, and that green jobs alone won’t pull the state out of recession. “We all see a clean energy future,” Stewart says. “The question is: When do we get there? How fast do we get there? And at what cost?” “We cannot lose sight of the fact that we are not in a good state in California,” says Reheis-Boyd. “I can tell you my members are making some very difficult choices about where to invest their next dollar.” We have to get the rules right, the remaining panel members say, but they see no trade-off between environmental and economic good. “I think the energy history of California over the last 30 years is how to do both well,” says Ralph Cavanagh, Energy co-director, Natural Resources Defense Council. “Nobody is satisfied with 12.4% unemployment, but I don’t think the answer is doing less of what we already know we do better than anyone else. I think it’s speeding up.” For Virgil Welch, Special Assistant to the Chairman of the California Air Resources Board, it’s also about maintaining California’s global competitiveness. “The policies that we as a state are working on are not just what we need to do for our energy and environmental needs, but they’re critical to driving us towards where the global economy is heading, which is clean energy.” As long as California’s maintains its forward-thinking policy framework, green innovators will call the state home, says, Raj Atluru, Managing Director at the venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson. “California has succeeded over the last century because of its innovation. We’ve innovated in entertainment, flight, defense, communications, PCs, the Internet. Our bet, at our firm, is that the next wave of innovation is going to be the green jobs economy. ” This program was recorded in front of a live audience at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on October 12, 2010
