This week, we start with Rob's trip to China, where he enjoyed both the picturesque ocean views and the local hospitality. Upon returning stateside, he enjoys the reality of the Atlanta Braves' current slump, which sets the stage for some comical deflection via the "horrible high-low game" later in the podcast. From there we spin off into the MLB debate of the week about “torpedo bats” and of course things take a strange turn during the debate.   Then it’s on to the free-for-all Pistons versus Timberwolves brawl and the bewildering firing of Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins. What’s the logic behind the Grizzlies' decision to fire a coach amid a successful season? We break down the possible reasons, oscillating between player-coach dynamics and organizational politics. Next, it’s on to college basketball, where the ever-vocal Kim Mulkey stirred the pot with her candid response to a student reporter’s question after LSU was eliminated in the Elite Eight for the second straight year. Mulkey asked the reporter, "How many final fours have you played in?" creating a divide between those who see it as a humorous quip and those who take offense. It's all about expectations and perception as our hosts unpack the nuances of Mulkey's response.   Wrapping up, the team goes through current NBA standings and playoff aspirations, pondering the fate of the Lakers and the remaining playoff hopefuls. Additionally, Harper raises a cheer for the Atlanta Hawks, hoping they’ll snag a play-in spot and bring some much-needed postseason excitement to ATL. It wouldn’t be a sports discussion without stats and records, right? The crew gamely tackled a "horrible high-low game" focusing on dismal sports records across history: Chris Dudley's free-throw foibles, the New York Mets' losing streak, or even the Prairie View A&M’s infamous 10-year losing streak.   00:00 Introduction and Host Banter 00:57 Robert's China Trip Recap 01:23 The Braves' Struggles and New Game 02:02 NBA Talk: Standings and Firing 02:20 Torpedo Bats Controversy 19:58 Pistons vs. Timberwolves Brawl 27:17 Kim Mulkey's Press Conference Reaction 31:27 Kim Mulkey's Personality and Media Perception 32:48 Expectations in NCAA Tournaments 34:32 Comparing LSU to Other Basketball Programs 40:08 The Importance of Failure and Learning 41:09 NBA Playoff Standings and Strategies 48:53 Big Shot of the Week: A Weight Loss Journey 50:58 Historically Bad Sports Records

Welcome to Season 12 Episode 32 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. In this week's podcast, Lisa chats with the Athletic Director of a small college and the Director of Tennis of its neighboring public tennis facility about what it takes to resurrect a college tennis program that has been defunded and unhomed. David Orr is a former multi-sport athlete who attended Centenary College in Lisa's hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, on a soccer scholarship. After coaching soccer in the Shreveport community, he found his way back to Centenary as its Athletic Director. Chris Dudley is a life-long tennis player who, along with his wife, moved to Shreveport to manage the iconic public facility, Querbes, just over 3 years ago. The facility had just undergone a major facelift when the Dudleys came to town, and they have continued to nurture it and its relationship to other entities in the area. Today, these two are working closely to reinstate the Centenary Men's and Women's Tennis Teams after Centenary decided to move from Division I to Division III athletics. As part of that move, the existing tennis courts were razed to provide space for a football field, so David had to look outside the college for a place for the tennis players to practice and compete. Because of its proximity to the college campus, Chris knew Querbes would be the perfect spot to host these collegiate athletes. He and David have been working hand in hand to hammer out the details, find the right coaches, and recruit athletes to the school. This is a partnership that can be replicated around the US where college tennis teams are losing their funding and facilities, and David and Chris are both happy to share their blueprint. For more information on Centenary College, visit its website at https://www.centenary.edu/. You can find the athletics website at https://www.gocentenary.com/landing/index. David Orr is happy to field any questions from prospective student-athletes and their families and can be reached via email at dorr@centenary.edu. For more information on Querbes Tennis Center, visit its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/QuerbesTennisCenter. Chris Dudley is available via email at chrisdudleytennis@gmail.com. Note from Lisa: If you find yourself in the Shreveport area, do yourself a favor and visit both of these amazing spots. I grew up going to events on the Centenary campus and playing tournaments at Querbes, so both hold a big spot in my heart! If you're so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your tennis community. Tom Brennan went from a small town in New Jersey to playing basketball at the University of Georgia, where he played for Dean Smith's former assistant Ken Rosemond and won a senior leadership award. While he was at UGA, he had the difficult task of trying to slow down the college basketball phenom in the country, Pistol Pete Maravich. A UGA grad assistant role helped him learn the coaching ropes and he then assisted Bill Raftery at Seton Hall, Rollie Massimino at Villanova, and Bruce Parkhill at William & Mary. Tom coached basketball and baseball at Fairleigh Dickinson before being named head coach at Yale University, where he guided players like Chris Dudley and Butch Graves.   Tom then took the head coaching job at the University of Vermont. The Catamounts had never been to the NCAA Tournament, but Tom turned them into a perennial power in the America East Conference. He became a fan favorite, co-hosting the Corm and the Coach radio show and becoming “a citizen of the community” in Burlington. Tom led the Catamounts to three straight conference titles and NCAA Tournament runs, culminating in an upset of top-ranked Syracuse. After 19 seasons, Tom moved onto broadcasting for ESPN and CBS, and Vermont named its basketball court in his honor. In this episode, Tom shares:What it was like guarding Pistol Pete MaravichHow he got addicted to the rush of coaching basketballWhat he learned working for legendary coaches Bill Raftery, Bruce Parkhill & Rollie Massimino  Why he left Yale and the Ivy League to coach at Vermont, and what kept him there for 19 yearsHow strong relationships & trusting 4-year point guards led to championships What advice Jerry Tarkanian (Tark) gave him before the Syracuse gameHow T.J. Chris Dudley, keyboardist, is truly a one of a kind band member. His performance style and instrument pairing has made him an icon, but performance may not even be the right word for what Chris does. It is more like just a display of how he feels the music and collective energy that the band creates. He has always been a key personality in the band with his sense of humor, composition skills and his critical ear. In this one on one conversation Chris shares his very unique perspective on Underoath and many pivotal moments in the bands history, how he developed his style, and the particular type of gratitude for and connection with the fans that he has. It's one thing to be a Christian in a public space, but it's quite another thing to bear the mantle of being a "Christian band" when you're in your early 20s and playing music for millions of people around the world. Chris Dudley is a devout Christian and his band, Underoath, started out with the label of being a "Christian band" releasing their two most popular albums under the Tooth & Nail record label. But what does it mean to be a "Christian band?" What are the expectations thrust upon you? How do you answer questions that you're not equipped to answer as an inexperienced youth? How does the label shift and change as individual philosophies change and priorities shift? Chris talks through his experiences answering all these questions through Underoath's rise in popularity to their breakup to their reunion and redefining themselves as a group that has moved away from, as they say in their own words, "the realm of seemingly impenetrable polemics." ABOUT CHRIS Chris has played keyboards and synthesizers for Underoath since 2000 and has recorded and performed 8 albums (and counting!). In addition to his work with the band, he also composes scores for short form and feature length films, with God's Waiting Room having premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. About Today's Show In today's episode, we speak with the dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education, Jeff McCarthy. These days the need to always be learning is more relevant than ever.  And a really good option is continuing education, especially if you need very specific skills in a hurry.  Seneca College has one of the largest continuing education departments in the country, and is the choice of thousands (tens of thousands, actually) for "upskilling" and "re-skilling" during these competitive times. Some quick facts about Seneca’s Continuing Education program: Seneca College Continuing Education offers over 1000 courses, and there’s over 150 programs. There are approximately 50,000 registrations per year. Seneca College Continuing Education offers diplomas, certificates, graduate certificates, and even degrees.  Also in this episode, we talk about: 1.  Who is the "typical" continuing education student. 2.  What are the most popular courses 3.  What new programs have just launched. About Today's Guest, Jeff McCarthy Jeff has spent over 20 years in education in a variety of capacities, from teaching, to sales, to management and higher education administration until becoming Dean of Faculty of Education at Seneca in 2016. Some recent news regarding Seneca’s Continuing Education program, is the Fall 2019 launch of Seneca’s Centre for Graduate and Professional Studies and Seneca’s first Downtown Campus, located in the heart of Toronto’s financial district. He regularly participates in Seneca’s United Way and Campaign 4 Students drives…Perhaps most notably for the year he and Helix Director, Chris Dudley(who was a guest on last season’s show) shaved their heads for the United Way, raising over $4,000). Jeff is also an active volunteer in his local community having coached over 32 youth hockey and soccer teams.   Important Links and Contact Information All COVID-19 related information, questions or concerns should be sent to health@senecacollege.ca For Updates on Seneca's Policies Regarding COVID-19, visit here: https://inside.senecacollege.ca/health This Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts! #SenecaProud Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, which means it's available pretty much wherever you get your podcasts.   Click here to subscribe. Chris Dudley is the keyboardist/synthesizer player for Underoath, a heavy rock band from Tampa Bay Florida who formed in 1997.Some of their music has been categorized as Christian Hardcore, Metalcore, Post-hardcore, Emo or Screamo and more, which is to be expected when you're a band who's been around for 23 years and constantly thrives to evolve. To date, the band has released 8 studio albums. Their fourth album They're Only Chasing Safety is really what catapulted them to becoming household names in the Emo genre in 2004. The album featured hits like Reinventing Your Exit and It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door which helped Underoath become a band with album sales that surpass the -1.5 million copies- mark. With They're Only Chasing Safety being such a big hit, their follow up record was one of the most anticipated albums of 2006 and well... It didn't disappoint. Define the Great Line was released in 2006 and debuted at Number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling close to 100 000 copies in its first week alone. The album's lead single was Writing on the Walls which ended up being nominated for a Grammy award in 2007. That's one of three Grammy nominations the band has to date. Another one came from the lead single, On My Teeth, which was on their latest album Erase Me. The tune was nominated for for Best Metal Performance in 2018.Alas, 23 years later, Underoath are still touring and rocking out showing that they deserve to be called Kings of the scene.

It's not often you get a big named band member on the podcast who has actually listened in before, but that's exactly what happened when **Chris Dudley** of **Underoath** stopped by for a chat, yes he's a fan of **_Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall_**. The band are just about to put out their new album **_Erase Me_** which is the first album in 10 years that features all the original members, so of course there had to be a little conflict/head-butting in the recording studio which Chris is more than happy to talk about. He also tells us what he thought of the disapproval and negative feedback the band received after finally using the "F-Word" for the first time on their single '**On My Teeth**', what his doctor thinks of his violent headbanging and his thoughts on being part of the inspiration behind the name of our podcast series. Your host **Browny** also takes a look at **Jason Aalon Butler**'s new hardcore band **Pressure Cracks** and addresses the drama surrounding **Story of the Year** ahead of their Australian Tour. Plus there is plenty of New Music to catch up on from **Bullet For My Valentine**, **The Fever 333, Fifth Dawn, Three Days Grace** and **Burn** **The** **Priest** (aka **Lamb** **of** **God**), throwbacks from **The Devil Wears Prada, August Burns Red, Conquer Divide** and more... #WoSUATW #Underoath #ChrisDudley #EraseMe #OnMyTeeth #Hardcore #MelodicHardcore #Metalcore #TheFever333 #PressureCracks #JasonAalonButler #JasonButler #AugstBurnsRed #StoryOfTheYear #SOTY #ConquerDivide #FifthDawn #TheGetawayPlan #BurnThePriest #CodeOrange #LambOfGod #ThreeDaysGrace #TheWonderYears #POD #AustralianBands #WallOfSoundAU #Podcast #MusicPodcast

The gang tracks down Dave, who calls in from Finland while on SPORTS ASSIGNMENT, and we get distracted for the first twenty minutes jibber-jabbering about Salibandyliiga (a.k.a. floorball) (a.k.a. we don't know what it is), curling, jai alai, eSports, and the USA Rock Paper Scissors League, the end result of which is our DEFINITIVE SETTLING of the issue of popular and unpopular sports whose participants have or do not have a sense of humor about the sports themselves. In the second half of the show, Mikal offers a heartfelt (?) admission that he is addicted to Gatorade, and we SOMEHOW, with no regard for our own basic BIOLOGICAL NEEDS, also serve up the final word on Shaquille O'Neal's 1999 dunk on Chris Dudley, the 1965 Koufax/Marichal/Roseboro kerfuffle, common Saved By the Bell plot points, Mr. Met's delightful obscenity, and Kevin Durant dunking on everybody.
