Rosie and Nicola Dempsey are otherwise known as the comedy music double act Flo and Joan. The two previous times they've been on this show, Nicola's pieces of trivia were both about Andrew Lloyd Webber - and there was even a question related to Lloyd Webber in last year's episode - at the time, the depth of their knowledge about the man was somewhat surprising. But now we understand why, since they were writing their show One Man Musical which is about Andrew Lloyd Webber. They've just been performing the show for the last month, garnering a nomination for Most Outstanding Show at The Melbourne International Comedy Festival awards, which will be announced after this episode is uploaded. When Bad Cinderella closed in June of this year, it signified the first time in 43 years that Broadway was without an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, and it became the second shortest run ever for one of his musicals on Broadway. Bad Cinderella also represented the second collaboration between Lloyd Webber and lyricist David Zippel. Their first show together was The Woman in White, which began in London in 2004 (starring Michael Crawford) and then opened at the Marquis Theatre the following year (starring Maria Friedman). By the time Woman in White came to New York, it had been 10 years since Sunset Boulevard and it would be another 10 till School of Rock. During this interim, between 1997 and 2015, Lloyd Webber didn't have an original musical or revival last more than 9 months on Broadway (including the Evita revival I previously did an episode on), so I guess you could say he was in a bit of a dry spell. Nonetheless, The Woman in White could've and probably should've done better, and in this episode we'll explore some of the reasons it didn't—and how a white rat ended up stealing the show. On episode 55, Greg is joined by the iconic and amazingly talented multihyphenate MICHAEL DES BARRES!!!Michael Des Barres' arrival in the entertainment world came early – as a Marquis attending boarding school in England, he first started acting at age eight in commercials and school plays. He later moved on to Corona Theatre School in West London where he was cast in the 1967 classic film To Sir With Love, starring Sidney Poitier. At nineteen, Michael played the androgynous rock star Rose in the nude musical The Dirtiest Show In Town, produced by Robert Stigwood, of Jesus Christ Superstar fame. Andrew Lloyd Webber saw Michael's performance and went backstage to tell Michael that he should indeed form a real rock band. Michael quickly wrote his first song titled “Will You Finance My Rock and Roll Band” which he performed for Lloyd Webber, that song lead Michael to form Silverhead, his first band, a raucous glam rock experiment. They were immediately signed to Purple Records in 1972. In 1974 Michael married his girlfriend of seven years actress Wendy Hamilton (Professor Emeritus Wendy Wheeler, London Metropolitan University). After two albums and two world tours Silverhead disbanded and Michael moved to Los Angeles broke and in love with Pamela Miller "Miss Pamela" of the GTO's, he arrived in L.A. with two hundred dollars and a hair dryer, ending his marriage to Wendy Hamilton. Michael married Pamela Des Barres, author of “I'm With The Band” in 1977. Michael and Pamela amicably divorced in 1991 and have one son, Nicholas Dean Des Barres. In Los Angeles Michael formed the band Detective. Detective was signed to the famed Swan Song Records by Jimmy Page and recorded two albums. That era also saw Michael appear on U.S. television in the sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati with Detective playing the punk rock group Scum of the Earth. Michael's character, Dog was featured throughout the episode and the band itself played at the end of the show. The members of Detective went their separate ways in 1979. Throughout the years of Silverhead and Detective Michael had been struggling with drugs and alcohol and in 1981 he finally got sober and has remained so. "People didn't understand why I didn't drink or do drugs in the 80's, I was a pariah, but I understood that it was for kids. It was making me psychotic and it was destroying my natural energy. It made me listless and uncreative and I thought that was unacceptable. It was more important to be able to look into my son's eyes and be able to connect with him, than it was to look in the eyes of some lower companion with bad coke." As a result of his sobriety he co-founded R.A.D, Rock Against Drugs, a highly successful P.S.A. that helped enthuse the culture of MTV with an anti-drug status. In 1982 Michael formed the band Chequered Past, featuring Steve Jones, Clem Burke, Nigel Harrison and Tony Sales. The band opened for Duran Duran in 1984, it was this association that led to Michael being chosen to replace Robert Palmer as lead singer of The Power Station when Robert Palmer withdrew. Michael performed with The Power Station in Philadelphia at Live Aid before two billion people after a ten day rehearsal. A highlight of the touring set was Michael's song “Obsession, cowritten with Holly Knight in 1983. At the time, it had been released by the L.A. based New Wave group Animotion and was a number one hit in twenty-seven countries. Michael's love of acting had never subsided and in 1985 he was cast in the role most familiar to his fans – that of...

The Gospel of Musical Theatre

Continuing our tour through the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber, today we're looking at Evita (1978)! The culmination of Lloyd Webber's collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice, this show offers an epic look at politics, celebrity, and gender through the life of a contemporary saint, Argentina's beloved First Lady Eva Peron (1919-1952).   We wonder: – Whose politics are at work in Evita? What does the musical say about Argentinian politics, British politics, and maybe even North American politics? – What does Evita have to say about sainthood? If Eva Peron is beatified by the Roman Catholic Church, what will that mean about how she is remembered?  – Do acts of charity enable or indict the structural forces that keep some people in power and others in poverty? What kind of social justice is Evita illustrating?   You'll hear: – Mandy Patinkin, Patty LuPone and Bob Gunton on the 1979 Original Broadway Cast Recording – Madonna singing “You Must Love Me” and “Don't Cry for Me, Argentina (Miami Mix)” from the 1996 Motion Picture Soundtrack   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt!

00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 00’24” Cabecera 00h 01’14” BERNADETTE PETERS & EL MUSICAL 00h 03’20” HARRY WARREN - We’re in the money – Pennies from Heaven 00h 05’40” IRVING BERLIN – Anything you can do (con Tom Wopat) 00h 08’54” IRVING BERLIN – I got lost in his arms 00h 13’00” IRVING BERLIN – I got the sun in the morning 00h 17’25” IRVING BERLIN – They say it’s wonderful (con Tom Wopat) 00h 21’05” JERRY HERMAN – I won’t send roses 00h 23’11” JERRY HERMAN – Look what happened to Mabel 00h 26’43” JERRY HERMAN – Time heals everything 00h 30’03” JERRY HERMAN – Wherever he ain’t 00h 33’03” LEONARD BERNSTEIN – I feel like I’m not out bed yet 00h 34’00” LEONARD BERNSTEIN – Some other time 00h 35’46” MARVIN HAMLISCH – How can I win 00h 39’33” MARVIN HAMLISCH – No more 00h 43’23” MARVIN HAMLISCH – What a guy 00h 46’43” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN – If I loved you 00h 49’55” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN – Out of my dreams 00h 53’24” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN – Some enchanted evening 00h 57’58” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN – Something good 00h 59’24” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN – Something wonderful 01h 02’46” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN – There is nothin’ like a dame 01h 07’24” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN - What the use of wondering 01h 10’37” ROGERS & HAMMERSTEIN – You’ll never walk alone 01h 13’24” LLOYD WEBBER & BLACK – Capped teeth and Caesar salad 01h 17’37” LLOYD WEBBER & BLACK – Come back with the same look in your eyes 01h 21’09” LLOYD WEBBER & BLACK – Married men 01h 24’10” LLOYD WEBBER & BLACK – Overture & Take that look off your face 01h 29’47” LLOYD WEBBER & BLACK – Tell me on a Sunday 01h 35’02” LLOYD WEBBER & BLACK – Unexpected song 01h 38’44” KANDER & EBB – All that jazz 01h 43’40” SHAIMAN & WITTMAN – Hang the moon 01h 48’23” BERNADETTE PETERS & EL POP 01h 48’51” Blackbird 01h 53’02” Cupid 01h 57’23” He’s got away 02h 01’09” I’ll be your baby tonight 02h 04’35” Running on faith 02h 10’04” Don’t 02h 14’16” Gee whiz 02h 16’44” Pearl’s a singer 02h 21’29” Sweet alibis 02h 23’57” You’ll never know

We're baaaackkkk! Today we kick off our fourth season, a deep dive into the musicals of the one & only Andrew Lloyd Weber, one of the most esteemed and prolific musical theatre composers of all time. In this episode, Nathan & Peter take a look at an early success he and lyricist Tim Rice had in 1968: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!   We talk about: - The intersection of "liturgical" music (Lloyd Webber's father was a church organist) with pop music - Dreams, and how they function both in the religious tradition andcontemporary pop psychology and musicals. Is it really true that, as Joseph sings, "any dream will do?" - What Bible stories we think are appropriate for children – and which parts of the Bible we sanitize or gloss overto preserve a romanticized ideal of childhood innocence   You'll hear Donny Osmond, Janet Metz and the cast of the 1992 Canadian Cast Recording (Really Useful Group Ltd under exclusive license to Universal Music Operations Limited).   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's ‘Jesus Christ Superstar' opened at New York's Mark Hellinger Theater on 12th October, 1971. The Guardian summarized the show as “the work of two young Englishmen, from an original story by God.” The production was the first to be mounted in a traditional venue - but was far from being the first live performance of the rock opera, which had been staged in a series of illegal and unathorised concerts across America, following the incredible popularity of the original concept album there. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how a failed bid to write a Eurovision entry led to the genesis of this iconic musical; consider why the album performed underwhelmingly in Britain before storming the States; and reveal why Lloyd Webber believed his Broadway debut was ‘one of the worst nights' of his life… Further Reading: • ‘Look Back at the Original Broadway Production of Jesus Christ Superstar' (Playbill, 2019): https://www.playbill.com/article/look-back-at-the-original-broadway-production-of-jesus-christ-superstar • ‘Jesus Christ, Superstar: Jews, Christians and Andrew Lloyd Webber hated the show at first' (Stuff, 2018): https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/stage-and-theatre/102773312/jesus-christ-superstar-jews-christians-and-andrew-lloyd-webber-hated-the-show-at-first • ‘Jesus Christ Superstar: 1971 Broadway Production (Rehearsals, Opening Night)': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg08h-s14yA&t=4s Love the show? 00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 00’56” Cabecera 00h 01’32” THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA 00h 22’50” ASPECTS OF LOVE 00h 41’21” SUNSET BOULEVARD 01h 05’06” THE WOMAN IN WHITE

00h o5'58" Come back Richard, your country needs you - Tim Rice 00h 08'54" Down thru summer - Ross Hannaman 00h 11'46" Goodbye Seattle - Paul Raven 00h 14'40" I’ll give all my love to Southend - Ross Hannaman 00h 16'36" Try it and see - Rita Pavone 00h 19'27" COMPONIENDO PARA CANTANTES DETERMINADOS 00h 20'05" A winter’s tale - David Essex 00h 24'13" Disillusion me - Gary Bond 00h 27'30" Magdalena - Tony Christie 00h 30'53" What a line to go out on - Yvonne Elliman 00h 34'21" Dance the dance - Connie Fisher 00h 38'24" It's easy for you - Elvis Presley 00h 41'48" ESCRIBIENDO PARA ELAINE PAIGE 00h 42'14" Falling down to Earth (Mike Batt) 00h 46'17" The last one to leave (Florrie Palmer) 00h 48'58" Hot as sun (Paul McCartney) 00h 52'10" The second time (Francis Lai) 00h 56'12" Missing (Vangelis) 00h 59'54" All things considered" (Vangelis) 01h 03'32" CANCIONES PARA EL CINE 01h 04'16" All time high (Octopussy) - Rita Coolidge 01h 07'10" A Christmas dream (Odessa) - Maynard Williams 01h 10'01" Finally (Gumshoe) - Pamela Paterson 01h 13'49" ELTON JOHN, FREDDIE MERCURY Y RICK WAKEMAN 01h 14'25" The falling priest - Freddie Mercury & Monserrat Caballé 01h 20'07" The Golden boy - Freddie Mercury & Monserrat Caballé 01h 26'06" Legal boys - Elton John 01h 29'10" Julia - Chaka Khan 01h 33'45" STARMANIA (TYCOON) 01h 34'12" Only the very best - Peter Kingsbery 01h 37'43" Ziggy - Celine Dion 01h 40'38" ALAN MENKEN Y DISNEY 01h 42'24" A whole new world - Brad Kane & Lea Salonga 01h 45'01" One jump ahead - Brad Kane 01h 47'21" Home - Susan Egan 01h 51'05" No matter what - Tom Bosley & Susan Egan 01h 54'08" If I can’t love her - Terrence Mann 01h 58'07" A change in me - Susan Egan 02h 01'51" How does a moment last forever - Celine Dion 02h 05'22" Evermore - Josh Groban 02h 08'27" WIZARD FROM OZ 02h 09'27" Already home - Danielle Hope 02h 12'44" Nobody understand me - Danielle Hope & Cast 02h 16'27" Red shoes blues - Hannah Waddingham 02h 18'35" Wonders of the world - Michael Crawford
