ANNIE part 3: Anthony Warlow [Chicago, Phantom Of The Opera] reprises his role as Oliver (Daddy) Warbucks for the new Australian production of ANNIE [Crossroads Live], now playing at the Capitol Theatre before touring nationwide. Hear Anthony discuss his history with the role and show, the exciting new technology and cast assembled and (as over the years named three of Anthony's albums our Album of the Month), I ask if the song, 'Why Would I Change A Thing' written by the original songwriters Charles Stouse and Martin Charnin especially for him in this role will be seen in this production. Soprano Julie Lea Goodwin performs across opera, musical theatre, and classical cross-over. She has played Musetta in La Bohème and Maria in West Side Story for Opera Australia. She performed opposite Anthony Warlow in Phantom of the Opera, and has sung as a soloist with many of Australia's Symphony Orchestras. With Christmas in the air, she'll be joining the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs for Carols at the House for three concerts from 15th to the 17th of December in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. Julie Lea knew she wanted to be a performer from a very early age, and tells stories of singing to the horses on the family's property out of Brisbane and enjoying the old Hollywood musicals on video. She charts her carer from her remarkable early break as Christine in Phantom of the Opera, through making her debut with Opera Australia and singing with orchestras and ensembles around the country.
00h 00’00” Maybe / Tomorrow – Audra McDonald 00h 01’59” Presentación 00h 03’23” Cabecera 00h 04’29” Introducción 00h 05’24” Overture 00h 09’36” Maybe 00h 12’50” It’s a hard knock life 00h 15’36” It’s a hard knock life (Reprise) 00h 16’56” Tomorrow 00h 20’18” We’d like to thank you, Herbert Hoover 00h 23’07” Little girls 00h 25’56” Little girls (Reprise) 00h 26’53” I think I’m gonna like it here 00h 31’09” N.Y.C. 00h 38’26” Easy Street 00h 42’16” You won’t be an orphan for long / Finale Act One 00h 44’47” Entr’acte / Maybe (Reprise) 00h 46’16” You’re never fully dressed without a smile 00h 50’34” Easy Street (Reprise) 00h 51’57” Tomorrow (Cabinet Reprise) 00h 56’20” Something was missing 01h 00’35” Annie / We got Annie 01h 02’29” I don’t need anything but you 01h 05’19” Maybe (Second reprise) 01h 08’00” A new deal for Christmas 01h 11’26” Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 13’26” Why should I change a thing 01h 17’52” You make me happy 01h 22’22” Don’t mes with mother 01h 26’48” Te necesito solo a ti / Annie 01h 31’06” Let’s go to the movies 01h 36’16” Firme 01h 38’51” Tonto – Sandy 01h 43’16” Easy Street 01h 49’21” Little girls 01h 52’43” Tomorrow is now 01h 54’45” It’s Christmas 01h 58’21” Bows

A soprano and actress who has established an international career spanning opera, theatre, concert and film, Anna O'Byrne has performed with the likes of Anthony Warlow and Emma Thompson, sung for Charles and Camilla, and appeared in everything from West Side Story to Barnum, and Guys and Dolls to A Little Night Music. Anna appears at the Playhouse of the Sydney Opera House in her own one-woman show, Becoming Eliza, from 9-12 June. In this conversation, Anna shares stories of working with and learning from her childhood idol Julie Andrews, her remarkable start in The Phantom of the Opera, only a few weeks after finished her degree, plus being part of the recreation of the role of Christine Daaé for Love Never Dies when it got its second start in Melbourne.
Jackson Harnwell is a former singer and conductor, having studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and worked with artists including Anthony Warlow, David Hobson, Helena Dix, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Yvonne Kenny. Today, Jackson oversees the clinical training of medical and health discipline students at the University of Melbourne, following a 10-year career in higher education.QUOTES“Church choir was an amazing opportunity that connected with me. To be able to create on my own, bond with others, sing in a group and share the emotion.”“I have memories of my choir master having to settle me down because the church choir went to stand, they're all very stoic and grim faced as they sing perfectly constructed vowels and I wanted to dance. I wanted to move around and express that emotion that was inside me.”“I started to have some self doubt, maybe there's more work that I need to do that I didn't understand I needed to do.”“Going into university, my perspective was that I was very good. That changed quickly when I became part of a cohort of people that, in my mind, singing came easier to.”“No matter how hard I worked, how much I did, I couldn't seem to overcome some of these hurdles.”“People really identified that one of my skills was that I could jump into unknown territory and be really crystal clear on the outcome that I wanted to achieve.”“It's probably only in the last three or four years, I've been able to recognize and accept just how much my creative self influences the work that I do, and is valuable to the organization and that it's not something that should be kept separate.”“I realised if I was going to make a living from performing, I knew how much work that would be. But what did “making it” look like? It means taking gigs that you don't want because you need to pay the bills and you don't get to choose what performance opportunities come up. That wasn't for me. The idea of this thing that I loved so much becoming a chore was terrifying.”“The pandemic has really brought to the fore my performing background. I've identified that I thrive in a crisis, because I'm so used to not knowing what's around the corner, not knowing what might happen on stage.”“The saddest thing that I have seen, with some incredibly talented, passionate musicians and performers, is that they leave it too late and lose the love of it. Eventually they're forced into a career transition and they cannot bring themselves to engage with their creative self anymore and that is an awful thing.”LINKSFind Jackson on LinkedIN“Think Again” by Adam GrantOpera Scholars AustraliaPODCAST TEAMProduction Support from Molly Jenkins Audio Engineering from Frazer RuddickTheme Music Composed by Danna YunTheme Music Performed by Jasper LyRECORDEDRecorded on 27 August 2021

00h 00'00" This is the moment 00h 03'37" Presentación 00h 05'26" Cabecera 00h 06'34" Inicio 00h 07'20" Prologue / Lost in the darkness 00h 10'10" I need to know 00h 14'07" Façade 00h 18'52" Bitch, bitch, bitch 00h 28'33" The engagement party 00h 22'28" Possessed 00h 24'22" Take me as I am 00h 27'54" Lisa Carew 00h 30'38" Board of Governors 00h 40'31" Bring on the men 00h 46'10" Lucy meets Jekyll 00h 49'30" How can I continue on? 00h 50'51" This is the moment 00h 54'44" Transformation 00h 59'33" Lucy meets Hyde 01h 02'01" Alive 01h 07'19" Streak of madness 01h 11'25" His work and nothing more 01h 16'28" Sympathy, tenderness 01h 17'49" Someone like you 01h 22'44" Mass 01h 23'37" Murder, murder 01h 29'57" Lettin' go 01h 33'24" Reflections 01h 35'46" In his eyes 01h 40'19" The world has gone insane 01h 43'47" The girls on the night 01h 48'12" No one knows who I am 01h 51'11" It's a dangerous game 01h 55'59" Once upon a dream (Lisa) 01h 59'14" No one must ever know 02h 05'03" A new life 02h 09'58" Once upon a dream (Jekyll) 02h 13'03" Confrontation 02h 18'29" The wedding reception 02h 22'41" Curiosidades 02h 23'35" Love has come of age 02h 29'29" We still have time
This week we chat with Matt Young about which of life's lessons can be learned from the classic little-girl musical - Annie!Say what you will about the current version of “Annie,” which is directed with a slightly tremulous hand by James Lapine and features the virtuosic Katie Finneran as the villainous Miss Hannigan, you can’t fault the timing of its return to Broadway…It would seem that Mr. Lapine is hoping to introduce at least a tincture of psychological shading to a show that is only, and unapologetically, a singing comic strip. In its first incarnation “Annie” was an unstoppable sunshine steamroller. This version, which flirts with shadows, moves more shakily…In 1977 Miss Hannigan was portrayed by Dorothy Loudon as a juicy gargoyle, with equal parts Dickensian villainy and showbiz oomph. Ms. Finneran, a two-time Tony winner, takes a more humanizing approach…As Warbucks...Anthony Warlow also ventures into naturalism, inflecting his songs with unexpected emotional variety...The delicate-featured but indefatigable Ms. Crawford, who is possessed of both a golden glow and a voice of brass, is pretty close to perfect in the title role.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_(musical)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_(1982_film)https://stageagent.com/shows/musical/673/anniehttps://www.mtishows.com/anniehttps://broadwaymusicalhome.com/shows/annie.htmLike us on Facebook! In Part 2 of the Stages’ conversation with Producer John Frost, he describes the rise of the Gordon Frost Organisation and, after the tragic loss of his co-founder Ashley Gordon; the necessary task of taking the helm as C.E.O. of the company.G.F.O. launches onward and finds success with shows like Big River, South Pacific, Hello Dolly! and Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Frost’s production of The King And I, rewards with considerable triumph, scooping several Tony Awards after the production transfers to Broadway. The show hadn’t been produced in Australia for 20 years. It was a major win for Frost, and opened many doors internationally. A West End production followed, with Elaine Paige playing Anna Leonowens. There have also been the theatrical misfires that confirm the business gamble of producing commercial product. Frost ponders these missteps and responds to the comments that have often questioned his choices of show, his casting decisions and his development of original product. He is loyal to a legion of performers who were on the ground floor of our industry and is enthused by any opportunity to develop a new ‘star’. He is happiest when he’s making theatre and still gets star-struck when finding himself working with idols like Julie Andrews, who directed his 60th Anniversary production of My Fair Lady.During the early 2000s, Frost partnered with James Erskine and Basil Scaffidi’s Sports Entertainment Ltd (SEL) and expanded the notion of entertainment, creating arena spectaculars with Grease and The Main Event featuring Olivia Newton John, Anthony Warlow and John Farnham.Eventually re-forming GFO, he gave us The Sound of Music (starring Lisa McCune), The Wizard of Oz (starring Nikki Webster), Annie (starring Anthony Warlow) and Footloose. The repertoire goes on with productions of Wicked, The Producers, Phantom of the Opera, Dream Lover and Legally Blonde. The list is extensive. In 2020, The Gordon Frost Organisation presents Chicago, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Shrek, The Book of Mormon, Nine to Five and Waitress throughout Australia. In part 2 of this absorbing conversation with impresario John Frost, he relishes the triumphs, analyses the disasters and contemplates the future of Musical Theatre and Entertainment. He is indeed evidence of a boy who had a dream, pursued it, and won.

In the 1970s, composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim and director-producer Harold Prince made some of the most inventive and challenging musical theatre that Broadway had ever seen. Two of those shows — A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street — return to Australian stages this month. Also on the program, we're joined by New York Times theatre reporter Michael Paulson for all the latest news ahead of the 73rd Tony Awards, and MTC are touring a production of Finegan Kruckemeyer's The Violent Outburst That Drew Me to You for young people in regional Victoria and Tasmania — so what is the impact of seeing professional theatre for the first time?
