Finding Solace In Noise With MICHAEL MCGOUGH From BEING AS AN OCEAN

HEAVY Music Interviews

It's not often you find metal singers releasing albums full of lighter material as another project. While the practice itself is quite common you generally find that singers will collaborate with another artist or guest on their track to showcase that side of their musical make-up.When Being As An Ocean vocalist Michael McGough announced he would be releasing his debut album Beautiful Dangerous, drawing from lived experiences and a set of notebooks he has been scribbling away in for the better part of ten years it understandably drew cries of uncertainty. Those cries need not have surfaced, because McGough fulfilled his promise last month with the release of his debut album and delivered exactly what he promised.A collection of rock songs at its core, Beautiful Dangerous is the sound of a musician not afraid to bare his soul by taking himself out of his comfort zone and pushing himself in ways like never before.HEAVY caught up with McGough to chat about music and the world at large."So far, so good. I was very surprised because it's still a very small thing Heart Of Gold but it's all about growth, and it's all about getting it out to the right people and hopefully people enjoy it. So far, it's been out tomorrow for three weeks, and the reception has been incredible. People have been so kind, so generous, so lovely about it, We've only just scratched the surface on what we're trying to do with this record so I'm excited to see what people think of everything."As for the music aspect to the album, McGough softens even more when asked to explain."Musically, the idea was always to create something so... there's a lot of different words that flew around in the studio, number one being nostalgic and meaningful. So, giving you something where you can listen to the words or even listen to the piece of music, and it takes you back to somewhere in your life. Whether you're with a certain person, or you're doing a certain activity or you're having your heart broken or falling in love. There's so many different emotions that I think I tried to capture, because I drew from those experiences with writing, and it wasn't just, okay, this is a cool piece of music, I'm just going to sing over it. It was okay, this is what I'm trying to say lyrically, and I want the music to make you feel that certain way too. You know when you watch a movie, and the soundtrack makes the movie mean something to so many people? It was as much about that as the lyrical content for me, so nostalgic and meaningful and heartfelt I think."In the full interview, Michael talks more about the themes and emotions running through the album, the memories and notebook that inspired the lyrics, getting personal with his music, getting over social anxiety and being able to perform, releasing the album to coincide with his birthday, how this music drastically differs to Being As An Ocean, what different things he gets musically out of both projects and more.

Californian melodic hardcore outfit Being As An Ocean this year celebrate the tenth year of their debut album Dear – D…It is an album that saw the band change their musical style drastically from their initial extreme metal sound to a more accessible form of metal that has since seen Being As An Ocean garner a solid worldwide fan base.As a special thank you to fans the band is touring Dear – D… as a featured album, with the concert hitting Australian shores in August.Vocalist Joel Quartuccio sat down with HEAVY to talk about the album and accompanying tour, starting with the fact many of these songs will be played live for the first time – at least to Australian audiences."Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he nodded. “Well, not any more! We did an anniversary Dear - D... tour at the beginning of this year in America, so we'll be playing the same set over there. Unfortunately, I will have to correct you a little bit, we're not going to be playing it in its entirety. There are a couple of songs that we are leaving out purposefully. We have compiled an 18 song playlist that incorporates a little bit more of what Being As An Ocean has been over the years. But there is 90% of Dear - D.. being played. I don't know if people could suffer a 15 minute instrumental song (laughs)."In the full interview, Joel talks more about the song selection for the tour, playing older songs for the first time, the decision to play the shows in smaller and more intimate venues, his memories of the album 10 years later, recording it in a hotel and how that impacted things, starting as an extreme metal band and why they changed genre, the support bands for the tour and why they were chosen and more.

There are moments that change your life. It might be something wildly important like a new relationship, or a baby being born, but it can also be a the truth behind a genuine smile and conversation. This happened to me today and I am floored by the experience.Loz Regan of the UK alternative/metalcore act, SEEK HARBOUR, is the singer and one of the musical expressives in the band and he is fantastic. You can tell Loz loves life, the opportunities in front of him, and his fans. He's a grateful soul, and is profoundly moved by the love he receives. He's genuine and courteous and I'm so blown away, I can't stand it. What a gem. Now, listen to the show, dig into the perspectives, and take something away that you can hold close to your own heart. The band have already surpassed 170,000 streams on Spotify alone. With an EP planned early 2022, the band are showing no signs of slowing down. The band are growing quickly and resonating with fans of bands such as Being As An Ocean, Casey and Acres. ‘Wolves' is the new single from Seek Harbour. It is released across all streaming platforms on the 4th February 2022 with an engaging lyric video that accompanies it. The band recently joined Saviour Management, and have since landed coverage with the likes of BBC, Moshville Times, Karma Radio, Hardbeat, Dreambound, TotalRock, Idioteq, and Local Distortion. With a busy 2022 scheduled, the band promise plenty of new music and will be touring and playing shows across the UK too with the likes of We Struck Gold, Schemata Theory and more. Speaking about ‘Wolves' guitarist and songwriter CJ says “Wolves are often a very loyal, playful species. In this instance we wanted to use the negative perspective on their character as imagery. Consider the ‘Wolves at the door' to be a ruthless and desperate collective. This single delivers an insight into how it feels when your relationship with said collective changes. When one finally feels they have nothing left their perspective of a situation can change. When one finally feels devoid of value, both emotionally and superficially, there's nothing left for the collective (society) to take away. This song depicts that and the reverse euphoria: ”It's too late to pretend there's something here worth anything at all”From and instrumental standpoint there's a very commercial backdrop of guitars and synth on this track, but arguably this is the most ‘guitar driven' track on the EP, and probably contains the most energy from a live performance perspective. This is typified by the drums and vocals in the ‘middle 8' sections. We're really excited for you to hear it. Visually we opted to work with a company called Revolt Entertainement (US) on an animated lyric video. Without giving too much away, we've gone with a real old world feel on this one. We felt that this, coupled with the wolf imagery, really helps to bring over the cold and desperate nature of this track.“"Daggers Like Eyes" provided by Seek Harbour, copyright 2021, All Rights Reserved.Subscribe to both shows here: https://bit.ly/3airCvhWanna be on the show? Was hat Fred Durst Jonathan Davis tätowiert? Und wie häufig schafft es Tilo, unbemerkt zur Toilette zu sprinten? Ach Leude – Viel Spaß mit ...

Connor…. Con dog…. Avenged7xfan12I met connor when he was in a band called Sleep Patterns. He was about 14 years old, and already one of the best drummers I had ever seen. Funny enough, I rode with Sleep Patterns on a string of shows with Being As An Ocean, which turned out to be epic foreshadowing. Which we also talk about in this podcast. His career seemingly (and rightfully so) progressed rather quickly almost overnight. So this is a really cool conversation highlighting all the challenges that came along with that. Check out his twitch at: twitch.tv/connorjdenis to watch him play drums and jam. Also, forgot to ask him about his dad. But Connors dad is epic and deserves a shout out. So shout out Poppa Denis.

Brand new episode out now Setting The Tone proudly presents SIDELINES and their new single Hangman out every now   BRIT NEWCOMERS DROP POWERFUL NEW SINGLE! Rising UK post-hardcorers SIDELINES have revealed their immersing new single, Hangman - https://youtu.be/ZlfgPY26bS4 . Fusing emotive drive with defiant belligerence, SIDELINES wear their hearts on their sleeves, producing a sound that deftly blends genres. By extracting influence from everyone from Architects, Taking Back Sunday, and Northlane through to My Chemical Romance, Being As An Ocean, and Underoath, the band's reach and output is diverse. A loud band full of riffs and feels from South East London. Joshua Venzetti - Vocals Kiran Solanki - Guitar Fraser Powell - Drums    Londoners SIDELINES are not afraid to prise open the envelope or speak up about social issues that weigh on their mind. The forthright trio have spent the past few years shaping their intoxicating sound and live set. With a wealth of material at their deposal and a strong desire to extensively tour whenever possible, SIDELINES' guile, quality, and drive is destined to see the post hardcore crew stamp their imprint on the UK scene. The rising threesome's new single, Hangman, is an ideal showcase piece. It's a muscular slab of metalcore laced with melancholy, raw passion, and an engulfing hook. The band remark about the track: “Hangman came from us as a band feeling both musically and politically frustrated. It touches on themes of class disparity, income inequality and the hypocritical nature of conservatism. It's a call out song aimed at a culture of punching down at those that need an open hand, not a fist.”     The track is well produced and its stitches between chorus and melody rather well, some catchy hooks and a real drive to the track. Hello people welcome to episode 28 of the when In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you’re all very well. This is a double feature episode containing conversations with CJ and Rhys from Dream state followed by Joe and Corey from Patent spending both recorded at Leeds Festival this year.  First up, dream state are welsh alternative rock / post hardcore band from south wales and whilst their songs are great and their live set is full of energy and very entertaining to watch, it was CJ’s vocals that initially caught my attention. The melodies are catchy and interesting, not predictable which is can often be the case however, as good as the clean vocals are - I was taken back by her scream. Not because she a female vocalist screaming, female vocalists can and do scream, I haven’t heard a scream that is so brutal, clear and full of emotion for a long time. The range and versatility CJ has is amazing and I strongly recommend everyone checking Dream state out even just for the vocals. Check and Rhys were lovely to talk to and it was great to get some time with them in amongst their very busy press time. If you’re listening to this as the episode is release then coming up on 18th October they are releasing their debut album primrose path from which I have added a the two singles to the WiyPodcast playlist on Spotify. They have some in store events and shows happening in October before they head out on tour across Europe with Being As An Ocean links to their site and social media are here:  https://www.facebook.com/DreamStateUKOfficial/ https://www.dreamstateofficial.com/   After that I managed to grab a few short minutes with Joe and Corey from pop punkers patent pending. They were a lot of fun and i basically spent Ten minutes with them as they told me some amusing stories which was great fun for me! Hopefully I’ll get to catch up with them with lore time next time they come to the U.K. but here’s a little taste of these guys
