Have you ever thought about quitting your medical career, but immediately felt guilty. Do you believe that being a good healthcare professional requires you to sacrifice your own well being to care for your patients? This week's episode of the life after medicine podcast answers these questions with special guest Dr. Jessica Phillips. During her intern year of pediatrics residency, Jessica struggled with burnout and suicidal ideation. She was essentially sacrificing her own well-being to succeed in a medical system that emphasizes efficiency over relationships. Listen in as Jessica and Chelsea talk about the narrative of self sacrifice in medicine and how it is creating a mental health crisis. They also discuss the tension between being a good human vs being a good doctor, quitting residency, and finding fulfillment after leaving the medical field. On today’s episode I brought Jessica Phillips on the show to share her incredible wisdom from her life journey. Jessica has experience in many different industries and has encountered a number of health challenges along the way that asked her to take a different approach to life. This includes dealing with the loss of her partner in work and life. I knew from the moment I met her she had a different way of looking at life that I wanted to learn from! Our conversation centered around understanding you are more than just your body parts and that injury/illness is an invitation to healing. She describes a process of reverse engineering what we are typically taught and how that worked for her. We also talk about the emotional toll these events can have on your life that are usually overlooked. I am so grateful to Jessica for sharing so openly because I want to participate in normalizing conversations around mental health and processing emotions during illness/injury and even from grief - this is where the true healing can begin. There are so many lessons we can all gain from (I know I did) to help us move through the rest of 2020! During this episode we discuss: The statement Jessica was told that changed her life and started her healing journey Her bold approach to treating her psoriasis (that you will want to hear) How a concussion helped her to reverse engineer the recovery process How constraints can help you in the healing process The power of being the witness and having a witness on your journey How Jessica managed grief after the death of her partner and the lessons she learned that has helped her in 2020 Why acknowledging the truth is the shortest path in the recovery & healing process The benefits of creating a thought boundary Jessica’s Bio: Jessica is an art curator and consultant, but she has worn a wide variety of hats in her life, including fitness instructor, restaurant manager, and television personality. She has also experienced a wide variety of life experiences in set backs, both health wise and mentally, many that resulted in a 15 year long journey to understand psoriasis, and dealing with PTSD from life changing moments including sexual assault, losing her partner, and overcoming a serious concussion . Her outlook on healing stems from a constant search to understand how the body, mind, and soul work together, and how when we focus on this, we can help heal ourselves from within. This was hard to record, but happy that it's finally done. As a tribute birthday episode to Nipsey Hussle, this one is heavy, but necessary, and host Patrice shares very real feelings about experiencing loss, feeling uncomfortable and realizing that God's promise for our lives doesn't come without making sacrifices. It's not our typical episode, and we'll be back with a content creator interview later this week. Some things just needed to be said and we had to show love to Nipsey, as he was the real impetus behind CAMPspace (where we record the show) pivoting from being a cowork studio to a content creator haven!Shout outs: Ty Littman, our producer extraordinaire who really pushed Patrice to get this episode done AND edited it beautifully.Jessica Phillips, Demont Pinder, Kay Lee and James Flowers - the amazing artists who contributed original pieces to our recent #ErmiasatCAMP Nipsey Hussle Tribute exhibit. May is National Foster Care Month so we were in the studio with Jennifer Allen, Resource Parent Recruiter for Children's Services of VA and Jessica Phillips, one of their foster parents. We talked about the important role foster parents play in the lives of many children in our communities. Jennifer told us about the process to becoming a foster parent and Jessica told us about her experiences in the last 9 years as a foster parent. We discussed the many different situations that create the need for a foster parent in a child's lie, how long the typical stay with a family is and other ways people can support foster families even if becoming a foster parent isn't for them. Once of those ways is supporting Froggy's Closet - which was featured on a previous Valley Today episode: https://theriver953.com/podcast/families-reaching-out-group-frog-froggys-closet/ After the show, we talked more candidly with Jennifer & Jessica about her experiences and the impact all the children in her care have had on her and her family. Revolutionary times call for revolutionary music, and Beethoven was living in revolutionary times. At the beginning of the 19th century, he quickly became disillusioned by Napoleon Bonaparte — a leader who initially seemed concerned with freedom but was ultimately obsessed with his own power. Beethoven's political anguish rang out in his music, as did his deeply-held beliefs about the heroic power of ordinary people. Beethoven spent more than 10 years revising Fidelio, the only opera he ever wrote. This was about more than music for the great composer. It was about freedom, devotion and the triumph of human dignity over tyranny. In this episode, host Merrin Lazyan speaks with Jessica Phillips, second clarinetist in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, about Beethoven's revolutionary sound. We also hear from soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, who sings the lead role of Leonora, about the most moving musical moments in Fidelio. “O namelose Freude!” (Adrianne Pieczonka and Klaus Florian Vogt): “Nur hurtig fort, nur frisch gegraben” (Adrianne Pieczonka and Falk Struckmann): This episode features excerpts from the following album: Beethoven: Fidelio (Sony Classical, 1996)— Deborah Voigt, soprano; Ben Heppner, tenor; Matthias Hölle, bass; Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz, soprano; Michael Schade, tenor; Thomas Quasthoff, bass-baritone; the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Sir Colin Davis.
