March 5, 1996 — The Veterans Committee elects four new members for the Hall of Fame, and just misses naming a fifth. The group elected includes fiery manager Earl Weaver, who had a .583 winning percentage in 17 seasons managing the Baltimore Orioles; pitcher Jim Bunning, who won 100 games in both leagues, including no-hitters in each circuit, one of them a perfect game; 19th-century manager Ned Hanlon, who won five National League pennants with the Baltimore Orioles (3) and Brooklyn (2), and Bill Foster, the top left-handed pitcher in the Negro Leagues. After beating the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium 3-2 to wrap up a 6-4 road trip, the Phillies cam home leading the National League by 6.5 games with 12 games to play. What followed remains the most dramatic late-season collapse in Major League history. The Phillies lost 10 straight games, including all seven on the following home stand, and finished one game behind St. Louis. In this episode, Craig and Rex review the Phillies 1964 season, trying to answer the question:  Who is to blame for the Great Philadelphia Phillies Collapse of 1964?Errata: After Philadelphia's 6-4 loss to Milwaukee on September 26, the Phillies had lost six in a row and eight of their last nine. - Harry Wismer- Jim BunningIn this 1958 radio interview, listeners hear from Jim Bunning, one of the most formidable pitchers in Major League Baseball during the late 1950s. At this point in his career, Bunning was establishing himself as a key player for the Detroit Tigers, having already achieved notable success, including a no-hitter in 1958. Known for his pinpoint control and competitive nature, Bunning was in the midst of a season that would see him win 14 games with a 3.52 ERA. His career was on a steady rise, and within a few years, he would become one of only a handful of pitchers to throw a no-hitter in both the American and National Leagues. This interview provides valuable insight into Bunning's mindset during a pivotal year in his career. As a player who would later be inducted into the Hall of Fame and also serve as a U.S. Senator, Bunning's reflections during this period offer a glimpse into the determination and discipline that characterized his approach to both baseball and life. The conversation in this clip captures a moment in time when Bunning was solidifying his reputation as one of the game's elite pitchers.#JimBunning #DetroitTigers #1950sBaseball #HallOfFamePitcher #BaseballHistory

John then talks about the success of the Philadelphia Phillies and the reason they have a chance to win the World Series this season. That is because of the amount of money they have spent in free agency. John believes that this is great for the sport of baseball and explains why. John then talks about how many in the baseball community have overrated the managerial success of Bob Melvin as he gets set to take his third MLB manager job in Four Seasons. During today's #savingsportsHISTORY segment, John discusses, among other things, cricket, Pele, Jackie Robinson, Rick Sutcliffe, John Heisman, Frank "Bruiser" Kinard, Vern Stevens, Jim Bunning, and W. We'll see during the show... (SPOILER ALERT... KNIGHTS WON IN OT... and just like the East it's NOW A SERIES!!)Yes, there was a basketball game tonight, too.... ((yawwwwwn...)) and we'll talk about it IF you wish (and I'm feeling masochistic). Guess the masochist in me won out... as we saw the Hawks beat the Sixers to face the Bucks in the East finals upcoming.  Of course FOOTBALL is always on our minds 7/24/365.25 out of the year... and to start out the show it was a GREAT THRILL to be joined by Ken Thomson of SportsX Radio / KDWN in Vegas... who brought some great tidbits about Solomon Thomas and our Raiders, along with some great insight about the Golden Knights.... Phoenix Suns... and today's U.S. Open.  WHAT A PLEASURE TO HAVE KEN THOMSON OPEN UP OUR SHOW!!    Otherwise... I hope all had a great weekend, as I get ready for a trip to HOTTTTT AF LAS VEGAS THIS WEEKEND... and some Beach time in San Diego starting on Sunday.

Bunning also becomes the first pitcher to win no-hitters in both leagues, and Gus Triandos becomes the first catcher to catch a no-hitter in each league. Bunning throws just 90 pitches in winning his second no-hitter. The next time Bunning faces the Mets he will shut them out. The Mets don't fare much better in the nitecap as 18-year-old rookie Rick Wise wins his first game and gives up just three hits for an 8 – 2 win. A young, hard throwing right hander in the Boston Red Sox organization, Tracy Stallard earned an unfortunate spot in baseball's record books when he surrendered Roger Maris's historic 61st home run in 1961. Stallard would join the Mets in their second season of existence and spend some time in the team's starting rotation. As a Met, he would once again find himself on the wrong end of baseball history as he toed the rubber on Father's Day 1964 against Jim Bunning—who would go on to throw the first Perfect Game in the National League since 1880. Part 1 of: Just when you think the Tony Bruno Show live Podcast would bog down in the dark days of a winter of discontent, we came out firing with a great mid February crowd and crazy show at Comedy Sports Philly. Joe Corrado wore his Jim Bunning throwback Jersey to celebrate pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training in Florida. We had the gang from phillyinfluencer.com in the house and a great food spread and cold beer thanks to @SmithsBarPhilly. Tony started out banning several terms he's sick of: "On Point" and "BAE" ...ENOUGH!!! We reminded the crowd there were only 71 days till the NFL draft and previewed some big college basketball games, including Number 1 Villanova at Temple. Our old pal the great Joe Younes came by from Goldfatherlocks.com to talk betting and the exciting finish of the college basketball and NBA seasons and lots of laughs when he fell out of his chair when we played the spin the prize wheel contest. We played our interview with Travel Channel Food wizard Andrew Zimmern from San Francisco where we talked bizarre foods and his involvement with helping set up the annual "Taste of the NFL" party where chefs from every NFL city prepare food for 5-thousand guests every year. Andrew will be the main host at SB 52 in Minnesota in 2 years at the new Vikings home stadium. Miss Robin did her weekly Florida segment highlighting an 18-yr old man who was caught posing as a doctor, just a few years after he pretended to be a gynecologist at age 15. Joe had the house in tears with a series of amazing one liners during the story.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/tony-bruno-show/donations
