In this episode of the Doing Good podcast, we talk with Jill Pratt. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Jill is a wife, mom, and the head of The Jiselle Lauren Foundation. This organization provides grants for care not traditionally covered by insurance to families of children with disabilities and aims to “help kiddos with disabilities experience joy.” This cause is very close to Jill's heart as her oldest daughter, Jiselle, has a rare disorder. Following Jiselle's diagnosis, Jill began volunteering and eventually founded The Jiselle Lauren Foundation to help others “who weren't as lucky as we were” along their journey. “Part of it is sharing our story,” she says. “You hope you can be a person of light to somebody going through a tough time,” adding they “want to inspire joy and happiness.” Learn more about this family's journey through The Jiselle Lauren Foundation and check out the Rett Syndrome Research Trust. This podcast is brought to you by Doing Good, a 501c3 nonprofit. www.doinggood.tv. Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// Cindy Baxter, Senior Communications Advisor with Climate Analytics, joined us to discuss the organisation's recently released 'Australia's global fossil fuel carbon footprint' report, which reveals the massive scale of Australia's domestic and international carbon impact via both local consumption and export-associated emissions. Cindy has been with Climate Analytics for 12 years, and has been working on global climate change issues for the past 33 years. Check out Climate Analytics' Bill Hare's recent Conversation article summarising key takeaways from the report here.// We heard part 3 of an interview Priya did last month with Stop LAPD Spying Coalition's Hamid Khan and Matyos Kidane. This week's excerpt is the final part of our conversation, and touches on the importance of resisting liberal reformism and academic and non-profit complicity in state violence and what it means to build a culture of resistance centering the experiences of unhoused community members. Listen back to part one of our conversation here and part two here. We replayed a conversation between Kenyan feminist and activist Nita Okoko and host Jiselle on Accent of Women's August 6 show, where Nita shares an analysis of the current protests in Kenya, the effect of state repression on the population, and where the country and its government sit in a wider global landscape. Listen back to the full interview here.// Matt Landolfo, Victorian Campaigns Manager for the Wilderness Society, spoke with us about the afterlife of Vic Forests and about the potential and pitfalls of pushes for improved federal environmental protection oversight. While Vic Forests ceased to exist on 30 June 2024 after years of campaigning by environmental justice advocates fighting its destruction of Victorian native forests, the emergence of a new organisation called The Healthy Forests Foundation has left many in the environmental justice space asking questions (check out ABC's investigative report on the organisation here). At the same time, a current senate inquiry into a suite of bills proposing to establish a federal Environmental Protection Agency may provide an opportunity to bolster native forest stewardship efforts.// Community member Amber joined us to talk about the upcoming autonomous rally for trans liberation scheduled for this coming Saturday August 17 from 12-2PM outside Parliament House. The rally will counter an event being held at the same time and location by a trans-exclusionary radical feminist group. You can find more details about the counter-protest by heading to @transqueersolidarity on Instagram.// Image credit: Matt Hrkac, 2023. Support Matt's excellent frontline photojournalism here.//

"What is the best use of me for the world?" So asks Jiselle Hanna from 3CR's Asia Pacific Currents, broadcasting every Saturday morning, who joins us this week and shares some of her life journey so far, from a childhood growing up in Coburg, where she and her sisters ruled the local pool, to a high school on the other side of town that changed her life. Join Jamie and Jiselle for a fascinating conversation about building emotional resilience. Jiselle shares how building her own emotional resilience has been transformational in her life and growth. You'll gain insight on the steps to building emotional resilience, what to look for when your nervous system is activated, and why it's so important as parents that we learn how to emotionally regulate. A few gems from our conversation: “Every time we overcome adversity, from a spiritual angle, I like to see it as an initiation into a higher version of myself. Mining the lessons in that changes the way I approach life, which fosters growth and maturity. We can't get there if we are stuck in our emotions.” To build emotional resilience: 1)Recognize the emotion. Name it. 2)Regulate in a somatic way. 3)Return to investigate what the emotion was showing up to teach you. 4) Do it again, whenever you notice activation. "The need to move indicates nervous system activation - its a message that I need to change what I'm feeling and change the interaction. The best way to process your emotions is to go for a walk. It's a great time to ask yourself why that emotion is showing up.” For more of Jiselle's wisdom and support around Emotional Resilience, find her at: IG @mighty_emotions Web Maha.ke/mightyemotions

Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
Will it take the 136 years to reach gender equality predicted by the World Economic Forum in 2021? In many parts of the world, women currently fall far behind. Just look at educational achievement, earning differences, ownership of property, access to the internet or mobile phones or participation in decision making for proof. But how do we go about levelling things up for women? Meet social impact pioneers: Cesar Maita Azpiri and Jiselle Steele. During this podcast Cesar and Jiselle share some of their 30 plus years of experience working on women's empowerment. Together they have recently been working on ‘gender transformative approaches.' Cesar and Jiselle deep dive…not only into what this means, but the practicalities of implementing gender transformative approaches – for businesses everywhere, across value chains. You will hear practical advice on how to build your business case for gender transformation; why the very women who most need support need to be in the decision-making roles; and what a difference gender disaggregated data will make to business impacts. Cesar heads the global gender unit at IDH -The Sustainable Trade Initiative. He's a business-oriented gender expert with hands-on experience in private and non-profit organizations active in impact investing & sustainable value chains. Cesar having studied for a masters and MBA degree he is now following a PhD in Anthropology focused on gender equality in cocoa and coffee value chains. Here in the US, at this time over 4 million people have quit their jobs.. Now what?! Where do we go? What skills do we have? What's next? It's interesting what happens when we experience change. When I left my job in August of 2020 I didn't have a plan, however I was blessed with a moment and many moments of questioning. Jiselle is the founder and Community Manager of Ladies in Waiting Mentorship and a speaker and Vision Coach at Pearls of Great Price Empowerment Services. She helps women embrace these moments to transition into their next chapter in relationships and their careers. This podcast is for anyone, however with women we sometimes doubt and hesitate in these moments and may need some guidance in understanding ourselves.
