This is the perfect time for a winter mix because we finally got a substantial snowfall today. I was worried that my snowblower wouldn't get a workout this year. I had already planned on a winter mix and then bang - 8" of snow. This past fall I made a mix for autumn that alternated between instrumental & vocal tunes and I really like the way it turned out. So this mix follows the same guidelines but with a winter theme. All the tracks have winter or snow or cold in the title and, like the autumn mix, they mostly alternate instrumental/vocal. Though there a few deviations from that rhythm. Cheers! On a recent hike in Virginia, a song burst out of a bush beside us. The white-throated sparrow riffed on their usual song, experimenting with a gravely “sweet can-a-NA-da can-a!” “Jazzy!” We laughed to each other. I don't usually expect birds to sing in their winter habitat. Birds' songs are typically used to attract mates and defend territories, and therefore are most useful in spring and summer. So, we figured we were hearing a young male practicing for the coming year. As it turns out, that was only part of the story.

On the Saturday November 16, 2024 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet multi award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist Laila Biali. She has headlined festivals and venues spanning five continents from New York City's Carnegie Hall to Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Washington Post says she “masterfully mixes jazz and pop, bringing virtuosity and unpredictability to songs that are concise and catchy.” Her latest album “Wintersongs,” is her 10th recording as a bandleader and her first release in almost 2 years. Best described as a musical love letter to winter, it's an entirely fresh and original offering, composed from a serene cabin surrounded by snow-capped mountains during a writing retreat in the heart of Canada's Rocky Mountains. We will talk about “Wintersongs,” how a car accident altered the course of her career, singing with Sting and much more. Then, we get to know documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist Roxana Spicer. Her new book “The Traitor's Daughter,” is about her decades-long quest to understand her extraordinary mother, who was born in Lenin's Soviet Union, served as a combat soldier in the Red Army, and endured three years of Nazi captivity.

The Juno-winning Canadian jazz singer and pianist Laila Biali is back with a new album, “Wintersongs,” which was inspired by some time she spent in Banff. She says the album brings her back to her roots as a classical pianist — a path that was cut short after a car accident changed her life at 15. Laila sits down with Tom Power to talk about the record, how it blends different sides of herself, and a difficult new challenge she's facing in both her life and music.
"Top 5 Winter Songs? A winter themed episode, lads? In August?!? Good timing, doofuses!" We hear you, imaginary (and, frankly, rather rude) podcast critic. And our retort is that our friends in the southern hemisphere are still firmly in the grips of winter. For example, our Third Lad this week, one of the greatest songwriters that Australia has ever produced (and an artist who is on the short list of Brett's musical heroes), Peter Milton Walsh from The Apartments! PMW has led the Apartments in various incarnations since 1978, starting with the spiky indie pop of the EP 'The Return of the Hypnotist' on The Go-Betweens' Able Label. After brief stints with The Go-Betweens and Ed Kuepper's post-Saints band The Laughing Clowns, the Apartments reformed in 1984 with the classic single "All You Wanted." Their first full length, 'The Evening Visits...And Stays For Years', followed in 1985 on Rough Trade, with the 1987 single "The Shyest Time" featured on the John Hughes soundtrack for Some Kind of Wonderful. Among the Apartments' string of breathtakingly gorgeous, diverse records are 'Drift' (1993), 'A Life Full Of Farewells' (1995), 'Apart' (1997), 'No Song No Spell No Madrigal' (2015), and 'In And Out Of The Light' (2020). For the uninitiated, Welcome to Walsh World! Peter stopped by in between sessions for a forthcoming record. Just as a small forewarning, we recorded our lists afterwards...so any juvenile, off-topic or off-colour side conversations about pillows, tank tops, getting lost in department stores, or Art Garfunkel lookalikes are no reflection on the pure class of Mr. Walsh. Hopefully, to quote the man himself, we didn't "take something good and make a mess of it". Special thanks to Marc Shea from the great fellow Pantheon show Performance Anxiety for the introduction, and much gratitude to Peter's wife Kate for the coordination. This was an incredible thrill for us! Proud members of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Conor Kerr's “Winter Songs” depicts a future scene: coyotes roaming through a rewilded city, digging up the bones of Indigenous ancestors who then regenerate and reclaim what was taken. Power is dismantled, something original is restored.Conor Kerr is a Métis/Ukrainian writer living in Edmonton. A member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, he is descended from the Lac Ste. Anne Métis and the Papaschase Cree Nation. His Ukrainian family are settlers in Treaty 4 and 6 territories in Saskatchewan. JOHN McCUTCHEON AND TOM PAXTON JOIN FORCES TO CREATE THEIR FIRST JOINT RECORDING TITLED ‘TOGETHER' John McCutcheon and Tom Paxton have been pals for decades, but it was COVID and Zoom that turned them into a songwriting team. Every Monday at 2PM they'd tell jokes, reminisce about old friends, and, of course, talk lots of sports. What happens when two of folk music's most beloved and prolific songwriters join forces? Songs about history, the news, baseball, cowboys, America, love, the remembered, the forgotten. The arrangements are compelling, the production pristine, and the performances stunning. From the stirring “Ukrainian Now” to the hilarious “Same Old Crap,” the immigrant story of “In America” to the heart stopping finale, “Together,” each song shines as would be expected of this partnership. John McCutcheon & Tom Paxton together have seeded the folk music landscape with hundreds of songs, sung by thousands for decades. With the album ‘Together', they add another bunch of great new ones to the repertoire of our time. And, given the bounty of those Monday afternoons, this is only the beginning. PLEASE WELCOME TWO FOLK LEGENDS JOHN MCCUTCHEON AND TOM PAXTON TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS … PURCHASE THE LATEST ALBUM BY Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon entitled ‘Together' The long-awaited collaboration between two of folk music's most beloved and prolific songwriters. The COVID pandemic finally brought these two old friends together via weekly Zoom cowriting sessions. This fourteen-song collection released on Appalsongs Records, barely scratches the surface of the hundred-or-so songs John & Tom came up with. With pristine production and world-class musicianship, the songs cover ground from Ukraine to Ellis Island to Shakey's Pizza to a cowboy campfire. We are dropping this surprise episode as a gift this holiday season, leaving out the ordinary intro and closing. The first three are traditional Jewish songs for Hanukkah, the next three are Solstice songs, and the rest are Christmas carols. While still limited culturally, these are the ones with which we have lived experience and felt comfortable sharing without appropriating. We tried to include as many aspects, states-of-being, and memories of this season as we could in health, positive, Blendingness kinds of ways. So much emotion for us behind these songs, even grief at times. It was a marvelously integrative healing experience. This episode is only songs, with no talking or discussion of any holidays or anything else. Songs are in English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Latin, French, and Ukrainian. Song titles are listed below. As always, due to the sensitive nature of the season and the power of music, please care for yourself/ves during and after listening to the podcast. Give yourself permission to skip songs or the episode if it's not your thing or not helpful. Our intent was connection, expression, and comfort, and we hope you feel that as you listen. Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Singer/Songwriter Mary Fahl Interprets Pink Floyd, ELO and Others On New Solo Album “Can't Get It Out Of My Head” In an effort to find some light and comfort during these challenging times, singer/songwriter Mary Fahl looks back to some of the essential music that has brought her sustenance and clarity by reinterpreting songs from her greatest inspirations … and a tribute to the music that defined her as an artist. Mary's most recent release “Can't Get It Out of My Head,” is a collection of songs that she calls “essential” to her development as an artist … “On top of all the madness that was happening in the world, I was grappling with the devastating loss of my mother and sister this past year and was feeling completely rootless. In an effort to find an anchor, a link to the past, a sense of home, I began to immerse myself in the comfort of music from my youth. “The challenge for me and my producer Mark Doyle was to make each of these songs our own while paying tribute to their original greatness...,” says Fahl, “Along with a standard hi-res audio version, we wanted to bring these classics into a new light by utilizing the latest audio technologies to reinterpret my favorite Pink Floyd, Neil Young, George Harrison, Richard Thompson, Moody Blues, The Rolling Stones, ELO, Nick Drake, Judy Collins, and the Mamas and Papas songs in the brilliant, full immersive, high-resolution clarity of 5.1 surround.” Please welcome singer/songwriter/musician… Mary Fahl to Interviewing the Legends …. Winter Songs is the second album by English avant-rock group Art Bears. It was recorded at Sunrise Studio in Kirchberg, Switzerland between 22 November and 5 December 1978, and was released in 1979. The air is cold. The sky is gray. The trees are bare. It's winter. And it deserves a soundtrack. In this episode, Wyndham and Christian discuss winter songs: songs about winter and songs that are bleak enough to make you feel like winter, from the sludgy rock of Led Zeppelin and The Sword to the bare, sparse melodies of Elliott Smith. If you need a soundtrack for shoveling, scraping, or hibernating from the cold, check out our Winter Songs playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/thebrotherpod/playlist/3e8kjNJ2lF6TebSAQvTUPe
