Welcome to the thought-provoking #RawTalks Telugu Podcast, where we dive deep into critical societal issues and engage in fearless conversations. In this episode, we explore some of the most pressing questions that stir the minds of many. Join us as we unravel the intricacies surrounding caste discrimination, the reservation system, government jobs, education, and their profound implications. Is caste discrimination the breeding ground of Naxalism? This question forms the core of our discourse. We delve into the complex interplay between social inequality, economic disparity, and the rise of Naxalism. With insights from experts and historical context, we aim to shed light on whether caste-based discrimination fuels this socio-political movement. The longevity of the reservation system sparks curiosity. How many generations will it span? This intricate query has puzzled many. Through analysis and historical context, we aim to navigate the horizon of this reservation system, exploring its evolution and potential future. The dichotomy between government jobs and education from government institutions is a paradox worth contemplating. Why is the demand for government jobs disproportionately high compared to the quality of education offered by government institutions? We dissect this phenomenon to understand its underlying factors and consequences. The 10:90 vs. 90:10 percentage ratio of the reservation system is a topic of debate. Does this system genuinely empower the marginalized, or does it inadvertently hinder efficiency and meritocracy? We delve into contrasting perspectives, dissecting the pros and cons of this approach. The allure of job security can overshadow the importance of efficiency and skills. Are we sacrificing excellence for stability? We examine how this dilemma impacts workforce dynamics and the overall progress of a society. Joining us for this enlightening conversation is Dr. RS Praveen, an Ex-IPS officer and President of BSP, Telangana. With a deep commitment to enhancing the quality of education in government schools, Dr. Praveen has left an indelible mark. His remarkable achievement is exemplified by his mentee, "Poorna," who achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest mountaineer to conquer Mount Everest. This podcast isn't just a discussion; it's an immersive journey into the heart of burning questions. Dr. Praveen's insights and experiences provide a unique lens through which we explore the multifaceted dimensions of these issues. Prepare to have your perspectives challenged, your curiosity ignited, and your understanding expanded. Keywords: caste discrimination, Naxalism, reservation system, government jobs, education, social inequality, economic disparity, efficiency, meritocracy, job security, BSP Telangana, Dr. RS Praveen, Poorna, burning questions, societal issues, perspectives, insights, fearless conversations. Tune in to this captivating episode for an adventure of the mind and soul, as we seek to unravel the mysteries that shape our society and challenge the status quo. Host Shriya is joined by former vivisectionist, turned Anti-Caste, and Animal Rights activist Rama Ganesan. Rama comes from a South Indian background where hierarchy based on caste is prevalent. After reading Eating Animals by Jonathon Safran Foer, she decided that veganism resonated with her ethical beliefs on how one must show up in this world. Since then, Rama has been expanding her activism to reach communities less discussed in the mainstream Animal Rights movement—the South Asian diaspora inflicted by the oppressions of Casteism. While the normalcy of vegetarianism in India is celebrated in the Animal Rights communities, Rama urges activists to reconsider this narrative and recognize its hidden core that is rooted in inherent speciesism, commodification, and exploitation of humans and animals by societal elites. We talked about why it's imperative that the vegan movement incorporates an Anti-Caste stance, the humane myth that may underlie the word "ahimsa," and Rama's views on incorporating facets of different cultures that may not truly be rooted in collective compassion and respect for all beings. There is so much fascinating history in this chat and we hope this conversation offers nuanced insight into often overlooked perspectives on the relationship between consuming animals and one's status in society.Check out Rama's literary work here.Rama's Recommended Reads: Annihilation of Caste, Book Excerpt- Read what Ambedkar wrote on why Brahmins started worshipping the cow and gave up eating beef Follow and reach out to Rama on Instagram, Facebook------Upcoming AAM Events:Chicago Convergence: July 29 - Aug 7Ohio Occurrence: Sep 2 - Sep 4For more information on these events, our online workshops, and much more, visit our Linktree:linktr.ee/animalactivismmentorshipTo support our work: Patreon.com/AnimalActivismMentorshipFollow @AnimalActivismMentorship on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube to keep up with the podcast. Join the conversation in the AAM club on Clubhouse and the Animal Activism Mentorship Community Facebook group.Want to get active for the animals but don't know where to start? Sign up for a free mentor at AnimalActivismMentorship.comAAM is fueled by FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement). Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast!

In the first-ever episode with two guests in my show, I am joined by my school friends whom I have known since 2004. From NYC, US, Nima Lama is a recent college graduate in Computer Science. He is currently working on projects to expand online education and virtual health care, starting from Kalikasthan in his home district, Rasuwa, and eventually throughout Nepal. Nripesh Pradhan, from California, US, is a Data Scientist at Chipper focusing on solving problems related to growth and fraud in the fintech industry. In this episode, which some people might find sensitive and controversial, we provide our Millennial's perspective on one of many aspects of Casteism in Nepal: Intercaste Marriage. We wanted to focus strictly on just one aspect of Casteism as it is impossible to fit all of them in a tiny episode. As millennials who studied in Nepal until high school and then pursued their bachelor's degrees in the USA, we share why Intercaste Marriage should be a thing of the past and how we should start making changes starting from our family. We suggest listening to the entire episode with an open mind. Nima and Nripesh also touch on the negotiation tactics used by parents to force same caste marriage. Also, we unravel the pressure children fall to respect their parents' decisions because going against the decisions is tantamount to discrediting parents' struggles to raise the children, even if the educated children have written hundreds of essays in their Social Science classes refuting the practice of Casteism. In the latter part of the show, we touch on the ramifications of leaving out surnames that our alma mater Budhanilkantha School has been practicing since its inception in 1972. Although the school had the good intention of enforcing only roll numbers and first names to address among students, we wonder if the school could have included full names and made us more ready to tackle Casteism head-on. After all, the school is a perfect understudy of how discrimination can be eradicated with its mini Nepal model as students from various backgrounds study here. For the older generation harvesting the thoughts about putting same caste marriage demands on their children and criticizing discussions from newer generations in the name of culture and tradition, I suggest listening to our opinions with an open mind. If you strongly feel that these three folks living in the US are far from the reality of not respecting traditions and want to share your opinions in my podcast, please reach out to me. I would love that. As a disclaimer, we foresee the shortcomings of the opinions presented by the guests in this episode where all three people have not experienced Casteism issues and mostly deducing their thoughts from their exposure to critical thinking. We have accepted the fact, and hence, I plan to bring in guests who have experienced discrimination in future episodes. I intended the episode to be a starting point to continue the conversation and make rational decisions for a better future where people's hard work and struggles from all backgrounds are not discredited solely by their so-called "castes." Also, in this ever-evolving social network world, I did not want to limit the conversations to purely online chat groups among just a few friends. Instead, I invited my friends and used my podcast platform to spark meaningful discussions and eventually take action to make changes.

Self Evident: Asian America's Stories

Daphne Chen always held a special place in her heart for the Taiwanese girl group S.H.E. Growing up in Ohio, she'd listen to their greatest hits before falling asleep, clinging to their pop songs as one of her only genuine links to the island and the culture her family had left far behind. So years later, when Daphne realized that those greatest hits were actually covers of American pop songs by Destiny's Child and the Legally Blonde soundtrack, she suddenly had a lot of questions... not just about S.H.E., but about why idolizing a Taiwanese girl group was so important to young Daphne in the first place. In this episode, we're sharing three conversations about the need to see and hear ourselves in popular culture — and the limitations of what pop culture can do to meet those needs. After Cathy chats with Daphne about their Asian teen idols in music, our intern Alex Chun calls up his favorite OnlyFans star, Cody Seiya, to unpack how watching queer porn has played such an outsized role in their own understanding of intimacy. Then, producer Harsha Nahata meets with two Indian diaspora culture writers to compare how — even with their differing upbringings and vastly different relationships to Bollywood movies — they began to question the role and the power of the Bollywood industry. "In Texas which is already a very red state, it is easy to fall into these kinds of patterns. I think in Malayali spaces which are these large Christian culture spaces that are very casteist and very exclusionary too, there is an invisible problem of caste there," says Vani, a Dalit Christian feminist from Texas who works on caste and gender issues.  The most common notion around casteism in Christianity focuses on escaping the same post conversion. For the immigrant South Indian diaspora in the US, ties to your community then become the only way to establish links to your old life.  However, in conversation with host Thenmozhi Soundarajan, Vani sheds light on how the oppressed are then left to choose between white supremacy and ostracism from Savarna Christians. Living in fear of their caste being detected, they often choose to operate in silos even in church. Dalit families often chose to not talk about caste to their children, thereby taking away from their identity in an attempt to protect them from oppression. "A lot of people don’t hear second-generation people talking caste practices, and outside of these circles of faith, did you like see this operating in terms of your other networks, in terms of your other South Asian friends or in college because I think second-generation people particularly those who were born in the United States the language of caste may or may not have been conveyed to us by our parents," she adds. An already invisibilized population, the addition of caste oppression to the community takes away from the fact that most of the conversion took place to escape casteism. A certain amount of liberation and access to opportunities and resources were awarded, recalls Vani, however, a lot of it also included moral and sexual policing, especially for women and queers.  With curiosity pushing her through barriers of silence reinforced by elders, it was only research and education that gave Vani the vocabulary to articulate all the wrongdoings in terms of caste, religion, and more.  "There was a long period of time when I didn’t want to call (myself) Christian (as) I was figuring out what faith and what connection with the divine looks like for me. Then I discovered liberation theology, I read a bit of James Cohn and I started doing a bit more research on what this faith looks like for people who have been deeply oppressed. [When] I started reading more liberation text it started becoming easier for me to understand that a lot of what I was taught when I was young was all very, very wrong," notes Vani.

“This incident happened just ten days ago. I want to bring this up as I have talked about a similar incident 14 years ago. The situation is the same now. I always, always avoid Indians at the workplace, Indians in a restaurant, Indians in any place I have to have a conversation with them because the conversation always goes in the wrong direction. So when I had to meet with an Indian physician in the middle of the pandemic, I had no choice. This Indian physician as soon as he entered, he looked at my chart and the first question he asked was, ‘Your name throws me off. Reina doesn’t really come from Hindu name. Your last name is kind of different, I am confused are you Indian?” I said, “Yes, I am very much Indian." I already knew where this was going. He did not focus on my health but the first thing he is so stuck at is my name and then he asked, “Where does this name come from?" I said this is part of India. And the next question was which part of India? Where does it belong to? I knew which direction this was going, because this wasn’t the first time this was happening.” The story mentioned above is Reina’s, a guest speaker from today’s episode of Caste in the USA. She has worked for several years as a public health professional in the US. Through her experiences, Reina highlights the bias in the public health field with relationship to caste, given her diverse experience working with Indians versus non-Indians. While the former had her watch an undeserving upper-caste colleague be protected and promoted by a manager of the same community, working with non-Indians got her a successful career instead. Joining Reina to speak further about casteism within healthcare in the USA is Dr Pradeep.  Both of them, in conversation with host Thenmozhi Soundararajan, reiterate several common narratives - from ignorance and caste pride fuelling dominant caste supremacy in colleagues within healthcare to being able to thrive only in non-Indian workplaces.

~ I asked, ‘After you graduate would you care about your identity or would you reveal it if somebody is abusing Dalits in general?’ They said, ‘No, the Telugu community is very strong in the Tech circle. They will use this connection to get a job and if anybody in the Telugu community finds out they are Dalits, it is going to have major, major repercussions for their professional career as well.’ What was shocking to me was that, yes my peers were silently suffering casteist abuse by pretending to hide their identity, by pretending to be what they were not. Also, they were already scared before they've entered the workforce. I further asked them if they would ever divulge that their identity, eventually. They said, "No, we want to make sure we have a good career and good connections to get a job which will stay. If we out ourselves, they will kick us out of from their niche tech circles." ~  This is a conversation that took place between Suresh Attri and his peers, while they were studying at a university in the US. The students Suresh is talking to here, witnessed him getting into a confrontation with two Indians who were indulging in casteist behaviour. They later approached him and requested him not to get embroiled in such confrontations, as the repercussions would be severe. On further prodding, it dawns on Suresh that the ones warning him off were Dalits themselves.  Listen to the full episode of Caste in the USA to find out more about Suresh's experiences of casteism in American universities, within Telugu circles in the US and among friends.

Much of that resentment is due to her vicious treatment of black people as evidences during her tenure as a prosecutor in Frisco and as Attorney General of California. India has an ancient belief system going back 3,500 years. Brahmin supremacy is the root of India's casteism. Brahmin Casteism promotes the division of humankind into groups from high to low value and apportions rights accordingly. Brahmin supremacy is an ideology that is anti-equality, anti-liberty and anti-justice; and thus is inherently anti-democracy. Therefore, it is antithetical to very nature of American values. Kamala Harris believes herself to be on the top rung of the human ladder, and all below her, of any color or race are her inherent inferiors.
