POPULARITY
Prolific author, Jonathan Maberry, joins us to chat about his new book, the Joe Ledger universe and if we can make Violin a Disney princess.
We're getting 2025 off to a stellar start with one of the greats of the writing world! Author Jonathan Maberry is a NYT bestseller and 5-time Bram Stoker Award winner. He's the creator of the Pine Deep Trilogy, V-Wars, Rot and Ruin and of course, the Joe Ledger series among many others. In our first episode of the new year, Jonathan talks about “Burn to Shine,” the 14th book in the Joe Ledger series. In this book, a covert group is infiltrating the world's most secure bio-weapons research sites. All across the country, people are acting as human ‘disease bombs' by infecting themselves and walking into public places. And heavily-armed groups of illegal private soldiers are massing for some unknown strike. Old enemies are rising and joining forces to hit Joe and his team with one devastating blow after another. What is the end game for all of this madness and terror? Outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outgunned, Joe Ledger has to find a way back from the fires of grief in order to make a stand between these enemies and millions of potential innocent lives. But Joe has allies, too. His team, the vicious fighters of Arklight, and friends who may or may not be entirely human. Sounds pretty cool, doesn't it? Jonathan, Curtis and Max talk all about the new book, the fights awaiting RTI and some callbacks to characters in past books. Jonathan also talks about Joe Ledger, what defines this character, and how his trauma over the years has shaped him. We learn what keeps in the fight and why after all these years, he has no plans to back down. We also talk about the big news that the Joe Ledger series has been optioned by Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick movies to be optioned for TV development. Jonathan talks about how he and Chad met and the process of working together. We dive into potential actors to play Joe and where we are at in the production process. “Rot and Ruin,” his young adult zombie series, is in advanced development by Alcon Entertainment and we go into how that has come along. After all these years, working in novels, comics, and much more, one would think that Jonathan Maberry has done it all, and we ask about his “Mount Everest” accomplishments and what else he wants to do in his career.

Jonathan Mabery is a New York Times best-seller, five-time Bram Stoker Award-winner, recipient of the Inkpot Award, three Scribe Awards, and was named one of the Today's Top Ten Horror Writers. We discuss many things, including the importance of research. He is the author of the Joe Ledger series, with which I am most acquainted. He is the creator, editor, and co-author of V-Wars, a shared-world vampire anthology adapted into a Netflix series. And we will address the role of research in how this series came about. We met at Superstars earlier this year, and I found him to be an incredibly nice person who I am excited to have on this podcast. Discover his works at www.jonathanmaberry.com/

We're celebrating episode 50 with author and fantastic human being Jonathan Maberry! Jonathan Maberry doesn't have time to talk to us. He's writing another novel. He's editing Weird Tales Magazine. He's brokering a deal with an agent, copyediting a manuscript with his assistant, coordinating a speaking engagement with his publicist, or prepping a session of his Writers Coffeehouse for aspiring authors. He's probably in the process of winning another Bram Stoker award--he only has five, after all. He's scripting a comic for Marvel or IDW. He's pre-screening a pilot based on one of his series.Jonathan Maberry doesn't have time to talk to us. But he does anyway. In fact, he's got a bookstore appearance coming up in a couple of hours, but he stays on the call past the hour mark to regale us with a tale of how he met Ray Bradbury. He's met all your heroes--Stan Lee, Lin Carter, Stephen King, Michael Moorcock, Harlan Ellison, Lance Henrickson, and on and on--and they're his heroes, too. But he also tells us about his beloved grandmother, a very special hero in his own story. He tells us why he's generous with his ideas. He's kind to people he's never heard of, like us. He has good advice. He has infinite delight in his craft. Jonathan Maberry is a legend in our world. If you love Black Panther or Wolverine or Captain America, you know his work. You may be a fan of his Joe Ledger thriller series, or have a son or daughter reading his Nightsiders books. Maybe you caught V-Wars on Netflix because you loved the comic. Or the Pine Deep novels bring you back to your own hometown's sinister past. You know Jonathan Maberry's Rot & Ruin books if you love zombies. He's penned novels based on the immensely popular Deadlands RPG. He's edited X-Files and Aliens anthologies. He even wrote a jujitsu instruction manual or two, before he started producing fiction in his mid-40s. And he just squeezed his first epic fantasy novel into a thoroughly overloaded schedule--Kagen the Damned, which came out with St. Martin's Griffin this May. The sequel, the Son of the Poisoned Rose, is already on tap for January of next year.We could keep going, probably all day, but there's an interview to get to. Because in spite of all Jonathan Maberry has on his plate, he made the time, and we couldn't be more grateful for it. I was fortunate enough to get an advanced review copy of Jonathan Maberry's new novel "Relentless", the twelfth book in his Joe Ledger series. So, this episode is probably a bit niche for even our audience, but if you're in the know about Joe Ledger, this episode is for you!
New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry joins the fellas this week to talk about his newest book, Relentless - the latest installment in the popular Joe Ledger thriller series. The chat goes deep into the Ledger series (John is a nerd), touches on Maberry's time as a martial artist (did we mention he's an 8th degree black belt?), and we hear about a story he wrote that was too over-the-top for the Punisher comic he wrote it for (is such a thing even possible?). All of that and more on the podcast that doesn't always interview authors, but when we do they've generally written about zombies – Hysteria 51.
