Fortunately for me (and you)…he said yes. This episode is our conversation. Mark is a globally-recognized blogger, speaker, and author of seven best-selling books: · Social Media Explained · Return On Influence · Born to Blog · The Content Code · The Tao of Twitter · KNOWN: The Handbook for Building and Unleashing Your Personal Brand in the Digital Age, · Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins He is the co-host of The Marketing Companion, one of the top 10 marketing podcasts on Apple Podcasts. Needless to say, his work has landed pretty much every noteworthy publication including the Wall Street Journal, Wired, The New York Times, CNN, and The Harvard Business Review. It is an honor to have Mark on Insight Out, as we explore the themes from his book Known that will help you on your path to becoming an authority in your space through personal branding, content, and an ability to stand out in a noisy world. An assortment of updates for those coming to the very first UpLift Live conference in Birmingham on 21 March 2024. See you there! TRANSCRIPT Hi, and welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. As we are now less than 2 weeks away from UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference, here is an update from the recent work that we've done to prepare for the event. First of all, the LaunchPad Zoom calls, you may have attended some of our pre-conference LaunchPad Zoom calls. These were for attendees to get to know each other ahead of the big day. We planned to run 4 of them, but they've been popular enough that we're fitting in an extra one, which will take place at 1pm UK time on Wednesday 13 March. So, stay tuned for the Zoom link if you have an in-person ticket. There's no agenda to these calls. It's just a bit of fun to see the faces that you're going to meet on the day of the conference. And in fact, you might meet them before then because there's a pre-party. So, we've organised a pre-party event at The Cosy Club on Bennetts Hill in Birmingham on 20 March 2024, the night before UpLift Live. And this will be for in-person ticket holders only. And it starts at 7pm. It's a really fab venue that's been used to host the popular SMM Meetup events that have gone on in the past couple of years. I'm having dinner with the conference speakers just before the pre party. So, I expect most if not all of them, are going to be around for some of the rest of the evening. So, it's a perfect chance for you to say hi to them. I've never really liked the "them and us" vibe that you get at some conferences, so we're all going to be together and mix as equals. I put out a LinkedIn poll in mid February to ask how many people would be coming to the pre-party and that got 76 yeses, but I'm sure many of our attendees will have missed that poll. So, I expect even more people to be there on the evening. So, if you've got a ticket to the conference, then you're going to be able to come to that pre-party and get yourself a free drink as well. The original vision when we started to plan this conference in the middle of 2023 was that we would focus on creating an in-person event. We've currently issued almost 200 tickets to our conference and all of which, almost all of which, I should say, will be for that in-person experience, which is on Thursday 21 March 2024. In Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Everyone with a ticket will be able to watch high quality recordings of all of the talks, and they will be fully captioned and transcribed. The replays will also be available to people with an on-demand ticket. We've decided not to livestream the talks on the day just to be sure that we don't have any technical issues that might detract from the experience, but we'll do our best to get the polished replays available to all ticket holders as soon after the event as possible. We've published our agenda for the day on the UpLift Live website at uplift-live.com but I'll repeat it here. If you do need to check anything, please do look at the website in the first instance just in case we need to make any late changes. So, the conference will start at 9.30am and finish at 5pm. With networking going on until 7pm. It's going to be a single-track conference where each speaker will take the stage individually throughout the day, followed by a group Q&A featuring all of the speakers together. So, registration is going to be from 8.45 until 9.30, and then we'll have an intro to the conference between 9.30 and 9.45. Louise Brogan is taking the stage from 9.45 to 10.15, talking about maximising the impact of your LinkedIn company page. Nigel Cliffe is next from 10.20 until 10.50. With advanced ways to search LinkedIn both on and off the platform, including some tips for Sales Navigator. Then we're taking a break for half an hour. And then it's Mark Williams from 11.20 to 11.50, talking about how to do good research through "ethical stalking" on LinkedIn. Then there'll be my turn. So, John Espirian, from 11.55 through to 12.25, on the topic of how to be influential and memorable on LinkedIn, then we'll take half an hour or rather a full hour for break for lunch. Then after lunch at 1.25 we have Gillian Whitney talking about live stream tips for creating live videos on LinkedIn. Then it's Kevin D Turner from 2.00 till 2.30 talking about advanced tips on LinkedIn best practice and look at some of the new LinkedIn features that have come about of late. Then we'll have another half an hour break. And then it's time for Tiina Jarvet, who is going to be talking between 3.00 and 3.30 on best practice advice for discoverability on LinkedIn, and the look at how the platform looks from the recruiter's point of view. And then the last individual talk will be from Richard van der Blom at 3.35, who's going to talk about improving social selling by understanding the algorithms and your data on LinkedIn. Then we're going to move into the expert Q&A. So, we're hoping to give about 50 minutes minutes to that. So, all speakers will be on the stage to finish the day, answer your questions, and it's going to be your chance to really quiz the best of the best. And then we'll close at 5 o'clock. But as I say, we'll have a couple of hours for networking as we wind things down. All of the talks are going to focus on sharing expert insight about best practice for using various bits of LinkedIn. And that means that we're not going to do any cringey selling from the stage. Everyone taking the stage has previously been featured in my Friday Shout posts, and they're all good people as well as being highly knowledgeable about their subject matter. And for what it's worth, based on a quick calculation, the speakers together have a combined 126+ years of experience in using LinkedIn. And I'm certain that each of them will have something of interest for you to take away from the conference and apply in the way that you show up on LinkedIn. So, that lunch and refreshments. So, we've thought about this one, and we've created a healthy menu that includes plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. We'll also have tea and coffee throughout the day, including some dairy-free options for the drinks, and also some pastries and fruit at the breakfast as well. As well as the talks, there's going to be a couple of fun extras on the day. I couldn't in all good conscience put my name to a boring conference. Plus, I'm going to start rolling out a new benefit for new and existing Espresso+ members. So, those who have a yearly subscription to our community of small business owners will be getting a nice little bonus that I hope that they find useful. I must say I didn't know how much effort it would be to put on a conference but I'm really thankful to be supported by my co-organisers, Jeremy Freeman and Gus Bhandal. So, the 3 of us make up the Mission Control team. But it doesn't stop there. Because we will have be having help on the day from a small group of very kind volunteers and we shouldn't forget that the event also has sponsors whose support has meant that we've been able to keep the ticket prices as low as we could for this very first version of the UpLift Live conference. Our principal sponsors are Flamingo Marketing Strategies, Milico and DOHR, and CRAI Glass are going to be doing our live captioning and auto translation on the day, too. But big thanks to everyone who's been in our corner. We're finally close to the big day, and we really can't wait to see you there in person. So, if you want to get involved with the UK's first independently run event of its type, all about LinkedIn best practice, we've got 8 of the world's best LinkedIn specialists on stage and there will only ever be one first conference. So, you can be there by grabbing a ticket at uplift-live.com. And depending on when you listen to this, you might be able to get the best price possible. Prices are going to go up by £100 on Thursday, 14 March 2024. So, go and grab your ticket soon. On behalf of Mission Control, this is John Espirian saying over and out! UpLift Live Mission Control
Power To Speak with Confidence. Conversations that will inspire and empower.
Get out of your comfort zone and learn to speak with confidence. It's important for your business says Relentlessly helpful® LinkedIn® nerd, trainer & consultant, John Espirian. John was my guest for this this previously LIVE episode of Speaking about Speaking LIVE. John helps small businesses & solopreneurs build an effective presence on LinkedIn® and the web without using pointless ads, cringey outreach or craptacular sales. Relentlessly helpful® is his trademarked phrase, and I having known John for a while I know it's not just a trademark but his life's purpose! He's not only a LinkedIn nerd (his word not mine) but a speaker and now a conference organiser, too. Did you know that LinkedIn doesn't run its own conference? I think they're missing a trick, but luckily for us John has stepped up and with the help of Jeremy Freeman and Gus Bhandal has organised the LinkedIn focused Uplift Live event in Birmingham next month. So, I took the opportunity to ask John not just about speaking, video and showing up on LinkedIn but also how he went about choosing and booking speakers and what he thought it took to be a good speaker. He also gives some great advice on how to get picked to speak at an event. There are some fabulous questions from the audience and some wise and insightful take aways from John. I particularly liked his advice to make the biggest promise you can keep and use the smallest set of words to describe yourself. This episode is bursting with nuggets of speaking, personal brand and LinkedIn gold! To find out more about John go to his website https://espirian.co.uk I'm Jackie Goddard, a speaker (and acting) coach, speaker, content writer and creator. I can get you performance ready and excited about speaking to your audience. So, if you want to talk more in '24 get in touch.

To verify or not verify, that is the question. Is getting your LinkedIn profile ID verified worth the effort? What are the benefits of being verified? Is there a risk of being left out if you don't get verified? These are just some of the questions I've heard people asking about. So I thought I'd get John Espirian's thoughts on the matter. John and I will be digging into what that grey shield verification icon signals to your network, how the ID verification process works globally through LinkedIn's partners, and whether taking this extra step lends more authenticity on and off LinkedIn. Have you ever wondered what sets apart a thriving community from a stagnant one on professional platforms like LinkedIn? What secret ingredients are necessary to turn a disparate group of individuals into a vibrant paid community? In today's digital age, the concept of building exclusive communities on social media platforms has skyrocketed in popularity. LinkedIn, in particular, has emerged as a powerful space where professionals can connect, share knowledge, and unlock new opportunities. However, not every attempt at creating a paid community on LinkedIn succeeds. The real question is, what does it truly take to build a successful paid community on a platform like LinkedIn? In today's episode of the Insight Out podcast, I have the pleasure of sitting down with John Espirian. John is a content marketing expert and Espresso+ community founder on LinkedIn who specializes in helping small businesses and solopreneurs thrive online without resorting to ads or cringe-worthy sales tactics. With a commitment to genuine connections, he guides clients to build effective and authentic presences on LinkedIn and the web. In our conversation, we dive deep into John's journey of building a paid community and the ethos that has been the cornerstone of his success: being"relentlessly helpful," and the challenges faced along the way. John shares insights on pricing, member engagement, and the importance of aligning the community with his personal brand values. An update on LaunchPad call 1 and news about the next call. TRANSCRIPT And I'm so glad you're putting this together because we need this for our community, we need this for bonding, we need this for learning. And I'm so proud of you, the three of you, for putting this event together because I know how hard it is. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. My name is John Espirian and I'm one of the Mission Control team for the UpLift Live conference which is the first of its type conference in the UK in Birmingham in March 2024. In the buildup to the event, we decided to create a set of Zoom calls so that attendees of the conference could get to know each other. The first of these so-called "LaunchPad" calls happened at the end of October and it was a great success. We had almost 40 of the conference attendees showing up, including some of our speakers on the big day. The whole point of the LaunchPad calls is to break the ice ahead of time so that when we arrive in Birmingham, many of us will already know each other and there won't be any need for that awkward, stuttering bit that you get at the start of most networking events. Here's a quick snippet of the discussion from LaunchPad call 1, and you're now going to hear the voices of Niraj Kapur, Kim Johnson, Kevin D Turner – who's one of our conference speakers – and Mic Adam. You know, I asked LinkedIn twice, this is 2 years ago and last year about doing a LinkedIn conference like Salesforce style how Salesforce do it with Dreamforce. I said, look, I spent 15 years in events, it'll be fantastic to do this. And I'm so glad you're putting this together, because we need this for our community. We need this for bonding, we need this for learning. And I'm so, so proud of you, the three of you, for putting this together, because I know how hard it is putting an event together. It's such hard work. And I don't think people will realise how much of your life it takes up. So, I wanted to say a massive thank you to you and Gus and Jeremy for doing this. Really can't wait for the chance to meet Gillian from Vegas and Tiina from Europe. I mean, this is just amazing. It really is. I just wanted to chime in and say, I've never been on a Zoom call with more than 10 people where every single person has their video enabled. So, kudos to all of you. I've never seen anything like this. And I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in person. But it's everybody that's in the audience. I mean, it is really, John, turned out to be the who's who of LinkedIn. And so that to me is fantastic. I wish it were 3 days. I want to thank you, John, for organising all the things that were on my bucket list, which is: I want to meet a bunch of these people that are already in this call and all the people that are speaking, but I've heard from other people that they're coming. So, you've organised for me the perfect bucket list. How could I not be excited to be there? Isn't that lovely? So, if you come to conference, you'll meet those nice people and plenty of others. Now, we want to have some more of that good spirit again so we are organising a second LaunchPad call. That next call is scheduled for Friday 8 December at 1pm UK time, and we'll be in touch with ticket holders with the Zoom link. I'm trying to organise each call for a different time so that we can do something that suits our audience and give everyone a chance to take part. Don't worry if you missed the first call or if you can't make the second call, as we'll have a couple more of these in early 2024. You are welcome to come along to the LaunchPad calls so long as you have a ticket to the UpLift Live conference. We've now sold more than 100 tickets, which is not bad going as we still have several months before the conference. If you'd like to get a ticket, you can join us via uplift-live.com. We know that some people would prefer to spread their payments rather than paying outright so we've created uplift-live.com/plan which has a payment plan option via a service called Klarna. This will give you a chance to pay for your conference ticket in 3 instalments. And it's interest-free. One of the bit of news for now: we've updated the ticket-buying page so that you can include the name of anyone who referred you to join us at the conference. We're doing this so we can reward the people who are spreading the good word about the event. If you've already got a ticket, do let your colleagues know to mention your name when buying their ticket and you'll get a little reward as a result. OK, that will do for this update. Thanks again for all of the lovely comments and DMs and posts about the event. It's all much appreciated as we build towards our launch in March. So, for now, this is John Espirian for Mission Control saying … over and out.UpLift Live Mission Control
Join me for a sparkling conversation about the UK's first ever LinkedIn focused conference, happening in Birmingham England in March 2024. Relentlessly helpful host John Espirian and I discuss where this idea has come from, who the speakers are and why you should attend. I will be one of those speakers! Here's another member of the Mission Control organising team for the UpLift Live conference. It's marketing expert The M Guru aka Gus Bhandal. TRANSCRIPT The important thing about being there in person is that you get access to the speakers, there's no separate areas or anything like that. Basically, we're going to be one big happy family on the day. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. It's time to speak with another member of the Mission Control team, and our interviewee today is The M Guru, Gus Bhandal. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Gus! OK, Gus Bhandal, welcome to the UpLift Live podcast. You are one of my co-organisers for this conference. Gus, for people who don't know you, tell us, who is this M Guru person? Thank you, John. It's a pleasure to be a part of not only the Mission Control team, but you know, part of this recording as well. So, my name is Gus, I run a business called The M Guru. And the M stands for marketing. I'm a marketer of numerous years of experience, 20 plus. And what I do is I help businesses with their marketing. Over the last few years or so, 3 or 4 years, I've specialised in LinkedIn, particularly in terms of content creation, getting people to be better at LinkedIn, and how to improve their LinkedIn presence, quite frankly, to get clients, to have conversations, to make friends and ultimately to make money. Yeah, nice one. And so you've got an interest in LinkedIn. But why a LinkedIn conference? I know why I want to go to a LinkedIn conference. What do you think about this one? Having worked in social media for a number of years, I know that the phrase digital marketing and social media and all that is such a massive phrase, and it kind of encompasses so much, and quite frankly, it's encompassing even more. So, we started with the likes of Facebook and Twitter and Instagram. And now we've got kind of BeReal and Clubhouse and T2 and Spill and all that. And it's just never ending. And I think particularly having a LinkedIn-focused conference, because I believe that LinkedIn is the platform for everybody. I think it's the all-singing, all-dancing platform that covers everything for everyone. And I think every business owner, senior executive, team leader, etc., should be on LinkedIn. So, I think a LinkedIn-focused conference would be really good for the UK to make sure that we to make the most of the platform because I think it's the one platform that a lot of people have trouble with, but also the one platform that we can also make the most out of. Yeah, nice one. And you as part of the Mission Control team, I mean, you know so many people, and you go to so many events, so you've got some events experience as well, which I don't really have. So, I've got domain experience with LinkedIn, but things like organising an event, organising a venue, thinking about maybe a pre-party or anything like that, is just totally alien to me. So, we are going to be doing the conference, actually, well not in your home city, but near enough: it's going to be in Birmingham. Tell us something about how you recommended that place, or what people should expect when they come to Birmingham? Absolutely. I go to an incredible amount of networking events, conferences, etc., all over the world. I believe that networking is massive. I believe it's very important for business owners and lots of people to kind of to meet other people and get to know other people etc. And I've, you know, in previous roles, kind of employments, I've run a lot of conferences myself, gala dinners, etc. So, I like to think I know what I'm doing. But at the same time, I also have a good handle on what makes a good event and what people would need, particularly in Birmingham, it's practically the centre of the UK, it's in the Midlands. It's about a 20-minute drive from my home. So, it's, it's perfect for me. But it's great. It's very easily accessible. The venue itself, I actually went to an event there last year, and I thought, this venue will be perfect. A, because it's massive. It's got a massive screen, it's got a big stage. It's got lots of networking opportunity, space. So, I think it'd be ideal for our conference as well. Yeah, nice one. I mean, I haven't seen the venue yet, as the time we record this, but we are going to be visiting it together soon. But when you were telling me about it, I was thinking, yeah, this sounds like it's a proper grown-up place for proper grown-up chat. And my real reason for wanting a conference like this is because I've been to too many events where LinkedIn is just a bit of an afterthought. And if anyone talks about it at all, it will be like, you know, make sure you reply to your comments and make sure you've got a profile photo. And I just thought, I just don't need to hear someone standing up and saying that for the millionth time. So, we are going to get some absolute apex operators of LinkedIn. This podcast is revealing who those speakers are in turn. So, stay tuned and you'll find out who they all are. Gus's role on the day, I think, is mostly going to be around compering, making sure that everyone is really happy and well taken care of and everyone knows you know where to be what time and to really enjoy the day. So, if you want to come and join us, we really want to see people come to Birmingham. I know a lot of people have asked already about can I watch online but right now we're really focused on getting paid But in the room because I think that's where the best networking is going to happen. So, if you want to come and join us, come to Birmingham. It's Thursday 21 March 2024 at Millennium Point in Birmingham, and the website for tickets is uplift-live.com. I know Gus, you're going to be promoting this to your email list and everyone else that you know on LinkedIn, because you're, you know, loads of people, and you're in lots of different communities as well, aren't you? So, hopefully, we'll see lots of your friends coming along. And lots of mine too, and Jeremy's. Any final thoughts you want to leave us with before we build up to March? Well, just building on the point that, yes, I'm going to be there making sure that everybody's happy and making sure everybody's looked after. The important thing about being there in person is that you get access to the speakers, there's no separate areas or anything like that. Basically, we're all one big, we're going to be one big happy family on the day. And I think that's the main thing. And if anybody needs to speak to anyone or be introduced to anyone, or make the most of the networking opportunities, the three of us, you know, myself, Jeremy and yourself, John, are there to make sure that people are happy and looked after and leave with a smile. Absolutely. Well, I really can't wait for it. I mean, we've already met several times. So, that will be nothing new. But we're going to meet so many people we've never met before. And spoiler alert, there are people coming from overseas to this who we've definitely never met before. And it's going to be a real honour to host them and we can't wait. So, please get your ticket now. Prices will be going up soon. And we'll see you in Birmingham. Gus, thanks for joining me and catch you soon. Cheers. Thank you. Thanks to Gus for his work behind the scenes to help make this conference happen. There are a lot of moving parts, and it's definitely too much for one person to deal with alone, so I'm glad of Gus's support. OK, if you're ready to get onboard, grab yourself a ticket to UpLift Live at uplift-live.com – and if you know anyone else who'd be interested in an advanced conference about LinkedIn, tell them about this podcast and how to get a ticket! Lift-off is coming soon, so thanks for listening and stick with us as we prepare for launch. This is Mission Control … over and out.UpLift Live Mission Control
Got a ticket to the UpLift Live conference? This high-value freebie is for you! TRANSCRIPT How do you feel about getting an UpLift Live freebie? Let's talk about it. Welcome back to the podcast. I am John Espirian, part of the Mission Control team for the UpLift Live conference, which is the first LinkedIn-focused event of its type in the UK. We're going to be getting together on Thursday 21 March 2024 at Millennium Point in Birmingham in the UK, for a whole day of learning and networking with some of the apex operators of LinkedIn. We struggled to contain our excitement at the full set of 8 speakers, which has now been announced through our blog and this podcast and our company page and other LinkedIn posts. I should say as well that my interview with Mission Control member Gus Bhandal is now live on the podcast, so do check out that 8-minute slot with him. Now, I'm not good at keeping secrets and it was particularly hard with the speakers because I'm so proud of the lineup. And now we have another offering for you. I'm sharing this here on the podcast as a bit of an experiment, to see who is really eager for what I'm about to say. So, here's the thing: every time I've been to other conferences, there's been a little trepidation about who you're going to meet, what it's going to be like. And I think it's possible to address at least the first of those things by having some sort of get-together beforehand. And indeed, our plan for the night before UpLift Live is to get together and host an informal gathering of our attendees so that we can break the ice in Birmingham. But I think we can do better than that and get to know each other before anyone arrives in Birmingham. So, my plan is to run something called the UpLift Live LaunchPad. This will be a set of Zoom calls over the course of the next 6 months, so that people who have bought a ticket can join a group call and get to know each other while also asking me any questions they have about the event. Now, if you're an Espresso+ member then you'll be used to our regular monthly Q&A calls. This LaunchPad idea will be separate and in addition to that, and available to anyone who has an in-person UpLift Live conference ticket, regardless of whether you're a member of the Espresso+ community. So, to be clear, membership of Espresso+ is not a requirement here, and neither is it a free pass to the calls. If you have an in-person conference ticket, you're welcome to come to the calls; otherwise, this ain't for you. As I record this, I haven't set a date for the first UpLift Live LaunchPad call. I'm interested in seeing what people think of the idea, so if you're hearing this shortly after this podcast goes live, then you'll be one of the very first to know about the idea. Drop me a DM on LinkedIn if you want to take part. And if you haven't got your ticket for the conference yet, now is the time: tickets are available at uplift-live.com The Mission Control team recently visited the venue in Birmingham. It's called Millennium Point and it's a fantastic multi-purpose venue ideal for this conference. I thought it was really fitting that it's built on top of a science museum, given the outer space nature of our branding for this conference. And the auditorium itself looks fantastic: it's got comfy chairs and a giant screen, and I think we're going to have a great time there in March. It felt like being in an upmarket cinema, and I really can't wait to see our apex operators show what they're made of on that stage very soon. OK, that's it. Please do get in touch if you've got a ticket and want to be part of the UpLift Live LaunchPad calls on Zoom. I'll get timings sorted soon and we will probably be aiming at late afternoon UK time, to cater for most of the time zones of our likely attendees. It's going to be great to get to know each other a little bit better and to build up the excitement to the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference. Until next time, this is John Espirian for Mission Control, saying … over and out.UpLift Live Mission Control
Our final speaker announcement is a Dutch superstar based in Valencia, Spain. It's the man who knows all about the LinkedIn algorithm, Richard van der Blom. TRANSCRIPT Back 2 years would practically do nothing for the reach. Now, you get more people to repost your stuff, it accelerates your growth. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. It's time for our final speaker announcement, and this time we're shooting over to Spain to speak to a Dutchman. It's social selling and LinkedIn algorithm expert, Richard van der Blom. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Richard! Richard van der Blom, welcome to the show. You are going to be a speaker at the UpLift Live conference in Birmingham in March. Welcome aboard. Tell us, what do you know about LinkedIn? Thank you, John, first of all, thank you for having me both here on the show and in March in Birmingham. What do I know about LinkedIn? I guess I'll know quite a bit, just like I think all the other speakers. Have been active on LinkedIn since 2005. Started to give my first LinkedIn training back in 2009. So, what I'll probably bring to the stage is about plus 14 years of experience on how to leverage this platform to grow your business. Basically, that's it, to grow your business, whether you are a solo entrepreneur or a marketing professional, or whether you are in B2B sales. And that's basically what I hope to share with the audience. Awesome. And you're well known for your skills in social selling, but I think probably most people who are watching this or listening to this on the podcast will know you for your algorithm report. You've become really famous for that. And you've got more than 140,000 followers, mostly off the back of that, I would guess. Yeah. Tell us a little bit about where the algorithm report came from, and what kind of insights people get from that. Yeah, well working with, so, my main focus is to work with mid-size, larger enterprises. And back in 2018, we had two enterprise clients. And they were baffled by the fact that when they publish a white paper or a really well-thought article, they would reach, let's say, 5000 views. And they were baffled by the fact that if they would publish like a team picture of like, any event that they would participate in, like, I don't know, half the marathon at Boston, they would get like 30,000 views, and they were like, we want to switch that, you know, we want to have 30,000 views for the article and just 5000 views for them. So, they started to ask us questions. And back then we only knew from our own experience based on our own postings what would happen, but we could only guess, and then I teamed up with some really amazing people. And they helped me to, I delivered them with the questions and they started to research like what happens if somebody likes if somebody comments what happens if you change the post in terms of format. And basically, we released like an algorithm report in October 2018. That was the first one and it was actually shared first with the two clients. And they were very, very enthusiastic about it. So, I thought, OK, let's just publish it. And it went like, it blew up. I remember I had almost 1 million views on that post, which was for me back then it was like huge. And so that was a start, actually. And back then I didn't thought even about redoing the same thing next year. I just thought like, OK, it's a one time exercise, job done. And then I think it was something in May 2019. May, June 2019. And people actually came back to me and said, like, are you going to do the research again this year, because we have seen some changes. And that was when like, it occurred to me like, hey, maybe if we do this on a more regular basis, then you know, people would benefit from it. So, we started to do it again, October, same month, 2019. It went even bigger, we have more data because we were more prepared, we know how to examine it. And that's actually how it started, and indeed you're right. That's when also my personal growth accelerated my personal page accelerated because social selling is really cool but it's rather boring to post on but if you post like the secrets of LinkedIn content, algorithm, well, you probably know that, then people like really want to have this and really grabbed you know. Yeah. And tell me do you agree that the pace of change on LinkedIn is speeding up? Yep. In which case, how often are you now doing this algorithm report? Now, we switched already two years from really like creating the questions in May/June, passing them on and then we would give like, we will have like two months of research and the report. Now we switched to ongoing research. So, our team is ongoing research is doing ongoing research, not necessarily because of the pace with what LinkedIn is changing the algorithm but more that we like, if something happens in February, like this February, we had a big algorithm change. It doesn't make sense to publish in November an algorithm report and say, hey, you know, 8 months ago this happened. So, you need to adapt to that because like people already noticed, especially some of the heavy content creators, they noticed themselves, like probably you also noticed that, now I see, especially in the last 3, 4 weeks, I see like the reach is going down for a lot of creators, also mine. So, then I need to like directly switch with my team and say, hey, I want the data, I want stats to back this up, because this is what I'm seeing. So, now it's ongoing. But yeah, I do agree that the changes are more rapidly. And probably because they're launching more features, more new stuff. And every time they launch new features, for example, collaborative articles, AI impacts the algorithm because they need to place it somewhere in the feed, which means, you know, the reach has to come from from somewhere, no? Yeah, absolutely. And we're still 6 months away from our conference. So, there's no way you're going to be able to work out what to tell us in 6 months' time. Right now, can you give us any kind of insight on some piece of data or some insight that people might not necessarily know that they would benefit from knowing right now, in late 2023? Wow, there's a lot, a lot of stuff. And I don't know what what our listeners know. So, yeah, talking about the conference, I will create a deck like end of February to make sure that at the conference, everybody gets the latest news. But for now, something that really impacts the growth of your post positively is the amount of reposts your post is getting, which back 2 years would practically do nothing for the reach. Now, you get more people to repost your stuff, it accelerates your growth. And the other one, I think a lot of people noted, but it's still a good thing to emphasise is your own engagement on other people's content. You know, it's really like, it's like LinkedIn is rewarding you for your own engagement on other people's posts. It's like they drive more traffic to your own posts. If you play the game, they go like, OK, we reward you for your time, and we drive more traffic to your posts as well. I, for example, seen this with my own posts. If I just publish in the morning, and for some reason, I don't have the time to be very active and engaging myself, I guess up to 20%/25% less traction than when I'm active, like, around my posting time. Yeah, interesting stuff. I think the point you made about reposting is important now that LinkedIn has relatively recently started showing the repost counter on public posts, because they never used to do that. No. And so you were only guessing at how popular a post might have been based on reactions and comments. So, I can see the psychological reason why reposts are a little bit more powerful. Yeah, and especially the "instant repost", John. So, and that's very interesting. Because that's not like the other social media platforms where if you share something and you write something of your own words to guide it, it would create more impact. On LinkedIn it's the other way around. Instant repost gets more visibility than a repost where you, like have 2 or 3 lines of your own words. So, Yeah, that's interesting. Like, one thing I'd really love to know is whether a high number of saves on a post would increase its visibility, but you can't see how many people have saved the post, can you? No, but I'm 100% sure that people saving your posts, obviously, is a positive indicator to the LinkedIn algorithm that people are engaging. I mean, it should be one of the most important indicators, because people saving your post means hey, I don't want to lose this type of content. So, definitely, and it's a shame that you can't see it. Also, the number of people that ring the bell in your profile, for me would be a very cool indicator, if really, people are engaged with the content, like I don't want to miss a single post of this person. But you know, that's hoping that brings us more data in the near future. Yeah, let's hope so. Richard, I could talk to you for hours, because this is all fascinating stuff for me. But please, everyone if you want to hear from one of the absolute apex operators of LinkedIn, come to Birmingham in March, on 21 March, Birmingham, UK, get your ticket at uplift-live.com You can see Richard in action, and 7 other apex operators of LinkedIn talking on a whole-day event focused purely on LinkedIn. It's going to be fantastic. Richard, thank you so much for joining me. I can't wait to meet you in person. Thank you for coming all the way over from Spain to join us, and I'll see you in March. Cheers. Looking forward to it, John, thank you. It's great to have Richard aboard as one of our speakers. His algorithm report has been massively successful on LinkedIn, and I've no doubt that his talk in Birmingham is going to be hugely insightful. If you're ready to get onboard, grab yourself a ticket to UpLift Live at uplift-live.com – and if you know anyone else who'd be interested in an advanced conference about LinkedIn, tell them about this podcast and how to get a ticket! OK, that does it for speaker announcements but we'll see what other goodies we have to share with you soon via this podcast and our posts to our email list, website and our LinkedIn feeds. Lift-off is coming soon, so thanks for listening and stick with us as we prepare for launch. This is Mission Control … over and out.UpLift Live Mission Control
This week, I sat down for a chat with the relentlessly helpful, and all-round top bloke John Espirian about the exciting news that there will be a conference for LinkedIn™️ enthusiasts in Birmingham, UK next year...How exciting! More on that later but here's the other things I covered in this weeks podcast Are search filters going to become a premium feature?
Our next speaker is known as Mr LinkedIn! Welcome to Mark Williams, who's coming from North Wales to speak onstage in Birmingham at UpLift Live about advanced LinkedIn strategies. TRANSCRIPT Who would have predicted this time last year that AI would be even anywhere near LinkedIn, you know? Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. It's time for another speaker announcement, and this time we're chatting with Mr LinkedIn himself, Mark Williams. I call Mark the Swiss Army knife of LinkedIn, as he knows so much about the platform and is probably the single person from whom I've learned most about LinkedIn. I chat with Mark a lot as we're both Liverpool Football Club supporters, and I'm a regular contributor on his podcast, Linkedinformed. We're turning the tables today and I'm interviewing him. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Mark! Mark Williams, welcome to the UpLift Live podcast. You are going to be one of our speakers in Birmingham. It's a great honour to be able to host you. Welcome to the show. Thank you very much. I can't wait. I can't believe it's so long to wait till March. It's seems a long time away for me at the moment. But I'm sure once we get past Christmas, it'll come upon us in a flash. Yeah, it will a bit. And it feels odd to be saying this, given that you are Mr LinkedIn, but tell us, for the people who don't know who you are, what do you know about LinkedIn? Oh God! Where do you start? I think, you know, one of the things I would say about me and LinkedIn, I mean, it changes so often. And there's so much complexity to it, that I don't think anybody could ever claim to know everything about LinkedIn. But I have been doing this a long time. And I think one of the things I feel is a strength with regards to knowing about LinkedIn is just that, that sense of knowing the company, the direction that they go in, and sometimes they make a change and you think, oh, you know, I assume this, or one would assume this from what they're doing. But sometimes when you've been doing this, as long as I have you kind of go oh, I'm not actually sure that's true. I think it's probably more like this, you know, and interpreting and understanding the platform from the perspective of users and how users have changed the way they use it, you know. I guess again, the longer you've seen it, the more you've been around it, the easier it is to be able to make that kind of crossover between what the platform or what the company are doing, and how its users will actually want to use it. Yeah, it's one of the things I appreciate most about your Linkedinformed podcast is that you actually cogitate and digest this stuff and then think about what it might mean strategically and explain that really well on the podcast. So, if anyone hasn't come across Linkedinformed, it's just gone through its 400th episode. It pretty much is required listening, I would say. If you're going to be coming to this advanced conference for LinkedIn specialists, you need to be listening to Mark's podcast, go and check it out. It's a regular for me on a Saturday afternoon. Now, Mark, I often think of you as the Swiss Army knife of LinkedIn, because you just know so many things about so many parts of what is a massive beast. We're too far away from the conference for you to tell us any specifics about what you're going to talk about but can you say something about the kind of state of LinkedIn and where you think it's going and maybe give us some idea of the kind of advanced things that you might want to talk about? I mean, it's funny, isn't it. Every year, or certainly for the last few years, in January, I do a sort of prediction of what I think's going to happen over the next year. And I usually get it quite wrong. So, I've given up trying to really predict on where LinkedIn is going to go. But the one thing we do know is that it's going to change, and it always does. And it always will. I think there are indications from LinkedIn that they are making a real concerted effort to try and stem the tide of personal content. And then trying to kind of dictate to us that they want to see more business content. And that's a good thing and a bad thing, you know. It's a kind of a good thing in the sense that maybe people do go a bit too far with personal content on LinkedIn. But it's a bad thing, also, in the sense that it kind of drives me a bit mad that LinkedIn feel they can dictate to us what they think we should do on their platform, you know. They like to feel that they can influence us and change our behaviour. And it's always an interesting observation of how we kind of push back from that. Yeah, absolutely right. I mean, you know, a case in point in recent times has been this rumour that they're going to be getting rid of hashtags. And anyone who knows how social media works actually knows that hashtags were an invention by members. Users came up with the idea. And so they're trying to take away something from us that I think a lot of people find quite useful, and at least people are, others are neutral about. It's just weird, isn't it, how they make their decisions, and they seem to do stuff that we never ask for? I mean, what's going on with that? Because they think they know better, basically. I think there is a kind of culture, not just within LinkedIn, I think Silicon Valley full stop, where I think they almost kind of feel that they are a superhuman race, you know, that they're sort of, they're more advanced than we are, they can think ahead more than we can, and they kind of lead the way. And so what we think we want and what we think we should be doing on LinkedIn, they know better. And so I think that's a cultural thing as much as it is. It's certainly not true. But it's, you know, I don't believe it's true. But I think it's it's largely a cultural thing within LinkedIn. Of course, the other thing that's is going to change a lot is artificial intelligence and LinkedIn have really jumped in with two feet on that one, I think driven by Microsoft more than anything, but I think we're going to see, you know, by the time we get to March, that may well have changed quite considerably. But who would have predicted this time last year that AI would be even anywhere near LinkedIn, you know? Yeah, absolutely. Good point. We just don't know what's coming down the pipe. I do feel, and I'm obviously biased here, but if they just listened to the LinkedIn specialist training community, it would be such a better platform for everyone. And they'd probably end up earning more money. So, it's ridiculous that they don't just open the door to us. But there we go. And during the conference, actually, what we're going to aim to do is towards the end of the day, see if we can get the speakers to get together for an open Q&A session where we can have this kind of grumpy old man debate about what how we can put the world to rights and answer questions. And Mark's talk is going to be some advanced LinkedIn tips of whatever is going to be relevant by the time that March comes along. We really can't predict that. So, if you want to come and join us, I really would love to see you in Birmingham. Tickets are available at uplift-live.com. The event is a whole day purely about LinkedIn. And it takes place on Thursday 21 March 2024 at Millennium Point in Birmingham, a lovely venue that can hold up to 350 people. Be amazing if we could sell that out. Come and see Mark and 6 other speakers, which are being announced on the podcast. It's going to be a wonderful day. If you have any questions, drop me a line. And thank you, Mark, for joining us. It's a real honour to be able, it's going to be fantastic to meet you for first of all, actually physically, but to meet you to catch up to meet everyone else and to have you on stage talking as Mr LinkedIn at LinkedIn conference, admittedly an independently run one, not an official one. That's going to be a great honour and I really can't wait for it. So, thanks again for joining us. An honour for me as well, John, so I can't wait. Wonderful. Cheers. And we will see you soon in Birmingham. Thanks a lot. So, thanks to Mark for agreeing to join us at UpLift Live. We really ought to have met by now, so our Birmingham event is high time to put that right. If you're ready to get onboard, grab yourself a ticket to UpLift Live at uplift-live.com – and if you know anyone else who'd be interested in an advanced conference about LinkedIn, tell them about this podcast and how to get a ticket! Lift-off is coming soon, so thanks for listening and stick with us as we prepare for launch. This is Mission Control … over and out.UpLift Live Mission Control
Our next speaker announcement is an international headhunter and recruitment expert based in Belgium. Meet Tiina Jarvet, who is joining us to speak onstage in Birmingham at UpLift Live on the topic of how recruiters really use LinkedIn, along with some advanced LinkedIn search tips. TRANSCRIPT If you get your presence right, optimising your profile, then there are big chances that you will be found. That's how I work. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. It's time for another speaker announcement, and this time we have yet another international speaker. Joining us all the way from Belgium is headhunter and recruitment superstar Tiina Jarvet. She's going to talk to us about how recruiters really use LinkedIn, and to give us some tips on how we can be found in search. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Tiina! Welcome, Tiina Jarvet, to the UpLift Live podcast. Thank you so much for being here. You are going to be one of our speakers, one of our international speakers at the UpLift Live conference in Birmingham next year. Tiina, tell me, what do you know about LinkedIn? Well, John, thank you so much for inviting me to be a speaker on the conference. I'm so excited about it. And equally excited I am about LinkedIn and LinkedIn Recruiter. I've worked with recruitment and with executive search, and I've been using LinkedIn my whole career. So, I'm so excited to share what's going on behind the scenes. What do recruiters do when they use LinkedIn, and how people can optimise their profiles. Yeah, fantastic. I mean, I've known you for ages now. And you to me, just not like any other recruiter, you are a proper headhunter, you really know LinkedIn very, very well. And it'll be great to get your take on things about how recruiters really use LinkedIn. You have already very kindly done a private session for our Espresso+ community, which I very much appreciate. This will be you on the stage giving all of the secrets about recruiting and searching. So, really looking forward to that. Can you give us any kind of insight about the kind of stuff that you're going to talk about in Birmingham? Well, there are so many myths about how recruiters and headhunters use LinkedIn and how people's profiles are found. And I really want to tell what's actually going on, and how, what are the tips and what is important, because sometimes you get a lot of information from people who actually don't work with LinkedIn Recruiter. It's just by guessing what companies could be looking for, but actually to show what is important, and which are the tools and which parts of your profile you should be focusing on. Because there are some things that are really important to optimise your LinkedIn presence. Nice one, and let me get this right, you are a Top Global Talent Acquisition Voice. That's a bit of a mouthful on LinkedIn. Is that correct? Yes. So, it's really about being part of the conversation on LinkedIn, and helping people to understand what is actually going on, that LinkedIn, it's, really the place where people connect for job search, but also for other opportunities, career opportunities, and if you get your presence right, optimising your profile, then there are big chances that you will be found. That's how I work. I work with people who are not actively looking but who get opportunities in their inbox, based on their experience, and industry. Fantastic. And let me just confirm as well, Tiina, that although you speak 9 languages, you're going to be delivering in English in Birmingham. And you're just super, super talented and I hope this conveys the gravity of this event that we're not just going to get any old speaker. We're bringing in international speakers. Tiina is coming all the way over from Belgium to speak to us in Birmingham next year. So, if you want to grab a ticket, now is the best time, and go to uplift-live.com. You can buy your ticket for the in person event in Birmingham, which is on Thursday 21 March 2024 Really looking forward to seeing you there. Tiina is one of 7 speakers that we've got lined up. They're all apex operators from around the world. And I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait to meet Tiina in person. We've been connected for years but we've never actually met. So, this will be a fantastic chance to do some great networking with lovely people. So, thank you for being part of it, Tiina, and I'll see you in Birmingham very soon. Yes, I'm very much looking forward to that. Thank you. Thanks a lot. Cheers. So, thanks to Tiina for agreeing to join us at UpLift Live. I'm delighted that she's agreed to come all the way over from Belgium and maybe she'll give us a little demo of those 9 languages she speaks – she is fab!
LinkedIn Easy Peasy Podcast: Building a Personal & Professional LinkedIn Presence
If you build it, they will come. That is holding true for Uplift Live, the UK's first conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users, & enthusiasts. People are coming from all over the globe to attend this in-person, LinkedIn-focused conference, which takes place on March 21st, 2024 in Birmingham, UK. As you can imagine, launching an event like this involves many moving parts. As a matter of fact, it requires an entire team - Mission Control - to make it happen. In this special LinkedIn Live, John Espirian will give us a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what's involved with taking Uplift Live from idea to reality. For more information: videoeasypeasy.com Gillian Whitney linkedin.com/in/gillianwhitney John Espirian linkedin.com/in/johnespirian
You'll be shocked … your next speaker at UpLift Live is me, John Espirian, the relentlessly helpful® LinkedIn nerd. TRANSCRIPT This is a solo episode of the UpLift Live podcast and that means that your next speaker at the LinkedIn-focused conference in Birmingham next March is … me. I'm John Espirian. Welcome aboard. Yes, so, it's me – I'm one of the speakers. No great surprise, I assume, as the conference was originally my idea. Still, just in case you thought I was just going to be doing only admin behind the scenes, I'm not: I will be talking about some advanced tips for LinkedIn. I can't really share too much about what we're going to do, firstly because I don't want to spoil the surprise and secondly, the goal posts move so much that it might not be relevant by the time March comes along, which is the same as I noted with the other speakers that I've interviewed. Anyway, I have got something fun in mind and that won't be the only fun thing on the day. I think LinkedIn has the potential to be quite stuffy and boring for a lot of people, and that's the exact opposite of what I want for our conference, so as well as just being a welcoming place to do lots of nice networking, we're going to try and make a real day to remember here, and I hope all of you enjoy it. The first thing I thought about when coming up with the idea for a conference was an event specifically for LinkedIn specialists. The remit is definitely a bit broader than that, though. We are appealing to anyone who already knows how the platform works and just wants to push themselves to a new level. So, for example, experienced social media managers who use LinkedIn for their clients might be the perfect fit here: people like that don't need to be told about creating a profile photo or updating their banner or really basic stuff like that. They want to get to the real juicy details of some advanced tips for using the platform, and that's what we're going to do in Birmingham. Similarly, there might be some businesses out there who have a person inside the organisation who acts as their internal "LinkedIn expert", as it were. And those businesses might want to sponsor that person to come and soak up all of the goodies and then go back and instruct all of their employees. Essentially, anyone who already understands the real value proposition of a business networking platform like LinkedIn would be a good fit to come to the conference and learn from all of the best experts on various advanced topics. The bigger picture for me here is that if we can produce a business model that works in the UK, perhaps we can export it to other places. I know I've got lots of friends in the USA who I'd love to meet, and I haven't been there for 20 years so it would be great to have an excuse to go for both business and pleasure. As I record this, tickets have been on sale for a couple of weeks but we've already sold a good number of them, and lots of people are really excited about coming to visit Birmingham and see the speakers and the other attendees. I've got a few lovely voice notes from some of our Espresso+ members who are coming along to the conference. In order, you're going to hear the voices now of Ann Davies followed by Lois Cliff and then Marjolijn Cohen. I'm so excited about attending UpLift Live, the first ever LinkedIn-focused conference in the UK on 21 March 2024. There's going to be so many internationally renowned speakers. I really can't wait. Hope to see you there. John Espirian, you legend. You have put together something totally awesome for LinkedIn that the UK has never seen before. What a lineup. It's incredible. You're awesome. And the team is awesome. UpLift Live in Birmingham next March for the win. To infinity and beyond. I'm thrilled to attend the UpLift Live conference on the 21 March 2024 in Birmingham, and the speaker list is endless. It's such a high level, and also the attendee list. Well, I'm really looking forward meeting everybody and getting a deep dive into all the topics. Cheerio, John. Well done. Lovely stuff and bonus points to Marjolijn because she's flying in from The Netherlands to be in the audience for this conference. Now, I'm not sure whether a podcast should be for public service announcements, really, but we're currently sorting out things such as hotel discounts and a pre-event get-together the night before the main event, so that people can break the ice before the big day. Details of all of that will go out to ticket-buyers very soon. If you haven't already got a ticket, now is the time, as we will be increasing the price pretty soon. You can hop aboard at uplift-live.com and that will get you an in-person ticket to see the apex operators of LinkedIn onstage on Thursday 21 March 2024 at Millennium Point in Birmingham in the UK. I should say that I'm not doing all of this alone. I'm joined on the Mission Control team by Jeremy Freeman and Gus Bhandal, both of whom have a lot more experience than I do in running events – which wouldn't be hard, as I have no experience of running events, at least not anything of this magnitude. Since the tickets went on sale, a lot of people have asked me about watching on demand. Now, we're not going to do a livestream of the event only because every livestream event I've been to in the past has had some kind of technical hitch. So, we are recording all the sessions and then we will provide fully captioned and transcribed copies of those recordings to everyone who turns up with an in-person ticket but also we'll be selling those recordings as a separate package. That bit's not quite ready right now because we want to focus on the in-person experience, but do stay tuned if you can't make it to Birmingham and would like to watch along. I really do think this event has a unique role in the UK. I couldn't find any other LinkedIn-focused event in this country, and very few across the rest of the world. LinkedIn themselves don't run their own official conferences, so it's really left to the independent LinkedIn training community to put something together. Frankly, if you'd asked me a year ago whether I'd be running a LinkedIn conference, I would've said no chance, but I do like to challenge myself, and I think now is a good time to move forward with this. Even just looking at the names of the attendee list gets me excited, much less the names of the speakers who will be on the main stage. We haven't announced who all of them are yet but I will surely do some kind of follow-up content, perhaps with the Mission Control team to chat about the full lineup once it's out there. I think you're going to be really excited by who we've got lined up. I can't pretend they are celebrities or anything like that, but if you pay attention to the way LinkedIn works, you'll know that each and every one of them is truly an apex operator of the platform. Given that I'm now officially a speaker, I'm officially committing to bringing you the best LinkedIn conference the UK has ever seen. But, as we've already established, there hasn't been one of those here before, so it will be the best by default even if it's terrible. But I will try my very best to make it non-terrible if at all possible. OK, that will do for now and do please stay tuned to find out who the remaining speakers are. If you've got any questions about the conference, I'm usually pretty easy to get hold of on LinkedIn. Look me up: it's John Espirian, and my direct messages are open to everyone, even if we're not already connected on LinkedIn. Again, if you want to buy a ticket, please go to uplift-live.com – and I really look forward to seeing you in Birmingham. So, for now this is John Espirian, one of your speakers and also a member of Mission Control team saying … over and out.UpLift Live Mission Control
Our next speaker announcement takes us to Halifax in the north of England. Meet Nigel Cliffe, who is joining us to speak onstage in Birmingham at UpLift Live on the topic of Sales Navigator and advanced LinkedIn search. TRANSCRIPT Boy, I didn't know how to get this value out of understanding search to a level beyond what the filters on linkedin.com provide, or even to that extent, what the filters on Sales Navigator provide. So, when we look a bit deeper, there's a lot to be found. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. It's time for another speaker announcement, and this time we're talking with the man who is "Linkedincredible": it's Nigel Cliffe. Nigel is based in Halifax in the north of England, and he's speaking at UpLift Live to share tips on Sales Navigator and advanced search on LinkedIn. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Nigel. Nigel Cliffe, welcome to the UpLift Live podcast. You are going to be one of our speakers at our event in Birmingham next year. Nigel, tell me, what do you know about LinkedIn? Thank you, John. I'm delighted to be here. What do I know about LinkedIn? I'm still learning. I guess I would be the LinkedIn trainer and consultant mentor for the last 10 years plus. I know a fair bit, I guess, but everybody has their own journey. And there are many ways to cut and dice LinkedIn. I guess what I say about myself is what I do I know works for the people and clients, businesses that I've served over that decade. Simple as that. Yeah, you really do. Because I mean, I've taken your course over 6 weeks. And it's fantastic. So, I highly, highly recommend that. So, anyone who wants to learn more about LinkedIn through a course-based structure, definitely go and check out Nigel's. Is it the Incredible Academy? Incredible Accelerator. Academy will do! Incredible Accelerator. That's the one. And yes, it's a fantastic course. So, you're coming to speak to us at the UpLift Live conference in Birmingham next year, which is on 21 March. It's a whole day event, we've got 7 apex operators of LinkedIn speaking together, and Nigel is one of them. Nigel, tell us a little bit about what you're going to speak about without giving away too many of the goods. No, thank you. And thanks ever so much for inviting me. I can't wait for that event, John. It's sort of been in my mind for something, this has been missing our people's calendars, hasn't it, for a long time. So, I'm so thrilled you're doing it. What am I doing? I'm going to be talking about Sales Navigator, but probably more importantly, about the topic of search, both on and off LinkedIn. I hope to be sharing some top tips that I've learned through Boolean architecture understanding over the last decade. And often in my training programmes, as you witnessed, some of the most revealing content and information that people have enjoyed has been around that topic. Boy, I didn't know how to get this value out of understanding search to a level beyond what the filters on linkedin.com provide, or even to that extent, what the filters on Sales Navigator provide. So, when we look a bit deeper, there's a lot to be found. I'm going to be sharing those tips with everybody. Good man. Well, this is the kind of stuff that you're not going to get at another marketing conference, because LinkedIn is often an afterthought at those things. And you're just not going to dig into the technical detail. So, even something like Boolean search, which will be might be an alien concept to some people, that's the kind of thing that we're going to dig into, so you can get under the hood of LinkedIn. And there's no there's no better person than Nigel to do that with us. So, really, really looking forward to that. What are you looking forward to most about the event, Nigel? Well, first and foremost, I'm looking forward to learning from some top people who are coming on that platform. I don't know who they are. So, that's going to be really interesting. And also to hopefully meet so many friends in the audience. We've such a powerful community here on LinkedIn, haven't we, John, of people who we've kind of really get to, I mean, I've met you in person a couple of times, so that's been wonderful. But you know, just the opportunity to meet people in person that I've built wonderful relationships with online over the last, however many years, it'd be great to meet them and, you know, just get to say hello, the first time perhaps. Yeah, absolutely. It's one of the things that's really struck me a lot is the collegiate atmosphere between LinkedIn specialists. So, there's lots of us about in the UK, the US, Australia, all over the place. And everyone seems very, very keen to share what they've found, with everyone else, new features, bugs, changes, all the random stuff that LinkedIn never tells you about. And it's going to be over a course of a day, us sharing all of that in one room. So, if you want to get a ticket, now's the time to buy. It's the best price it's ever going to be. So, take a look at uplift-live.com. And you can buy a ticket and the event is in person on Thursday 21 March 2024 in Birmingham in the UK. We'll have on-demand tickets available as well for people who can't make it but at the moment we're selling in-person tickets, so see you all there. You'll see Nigel and 6 other people speaking onstage. Nigel, thank you for joining us, and I'll see you in Birmingham. Cheers. Look forward to it, John. Thanks for inviting me. Can't wait! Thanks to Nigel for agreeing to join us at UpLift Live. We've met before a couple of times, and he's a lovely person: really friendly, knowledgeable, engaging. I'm sure you're going to love him.
Our next speaker announcement takes us to Las Vegas! Meet livestream video expert, Gillian Whitney, who is joining us to speak onstage in Birmingham at UpLift Live. TRANSCRIPT So, that's why I'm excited about live video, plus live video, you get two bangs for your buck in that you make your live video, and then you repurpose it as recorded video. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. OK, we have another international speaker, and this time we're heading to Las Vegas to speak with livestream video expert, Gillian Whitney. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Gillian! OK, Gillian Whitney, welcome to the UpLift Live podcast, and you are going to be one of our speakers in Birmingham next year. Gillian, tell us, what do you know about LinkedIn? Ah, LinkedIn is just like my home. I love LinkedIn. I'm one of those people that came over from Facebook. And when I saw LinkedIn, I never went back. I just am so enthusiastic about everything LinkedIn, for growing your business professionally and privately as well, because you just get to know so many great people, but I'm all in on LinkedIn. I love it. Fantastic. And you are my go-to video person and specifically, live video which you've relatively recently pivoted into as your main niche now. So, you're going to be coming all the way over from Las Vegas in the USA to talk to us about live video on LinkedIn. What can you tell people who are thinking about buying a ticket that they might be able to find out about live video when they come to the conference and hear you speak? Oh, well live video is, I'm thinking, the way to sort of combat the AI bots and the fakery and all those crazy videos that are out there right now. So, live video, it's allowing people to really get to know, like, and trust you, because with a live, you're genuine, it's not this, you know, edited version of you, it's you being the expert that you are. So, when you can actually lock in and answer a question live, people know that you know your stuff. So, that's why I'm excited about live video, plus live video, you get two bangs for your buck in that you make your live video, and then you repurpose it as recorded video. So, that to me is just like let's get our time together so that when doing video once and getting massive amount of leverage out of that take. Yeah, that's a great point. I always emphasise this fact that video is the most extensible format. And we are recording this as a video right now. But I'm going to be taking the audio from this and turning it into the UpLift Live podcast. You might be listening to the UpLift Live podcast, as I say these words. And but yes, like you said, two bangs for your buck there, video and audio at the same time. And there's no more personal way of creating content than via video on LinkedIn. And there's no more personal experience than actually meeting people in real life. So, we really want to see people coming to Birmingham, UK, next year. The conference is going to be on Thursday 21 March 2024. And the tickets are now available so you can buy them at uplift-live.com. Gillian is one of 7 apex operators of LinkedIn who is going to be speaking on stage about various topics about LinkedIn. Gillian specialises in live video, but we'll have all sorts of other advanced things like Sales Navigator and Recruiter and advanced searching and all sorts of good stuff. So, if you want to join us, if you want to see Gillian in action, and loads of other good speakers come to Birmingham, it's going to be a wonderful event. I can't wait to meet you in person, Gillian, now that we've been connected for a few years. It'll be great to give you a hug and see you in person. So, loads of great networking potentials. And we'll see you all there very, very soon. And thanks for joining me, Gillian. Oh, I'm so excited. And as I said before, if you are thinking about coming and doing a road trip to the UK, there is no better time than now. So, you know, hey, I'm getting on a plane. I'm coming from Las Vegas. Time for another speaker, and it's the awesome Kevin D Turner. He's coming from Texas to speak onstage in Birmingham at UpLift Live about advanced LinkedIn strategies. TRANSCRIPT I'm one of those that I believe that artificial intelligence can be an incredible muse but it's never going to be a complete artist. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. OK, time for another speaker, and this time we're heading to Texas to talk with one of the absolute top names of LinkedIn: Kevin D Turner. He has phenomenal knowledge of so many aspects of LinkedIn, and he is a number one person for staying on top of new features and changes. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Kevin! Kevin D Turner, welcome to the UpLift Live conference podcast. Thank you so much for being here. Tell everyone a little bit about who Kevin D Turner is. How did you get involved in LinkedIn? And what do you know about LinkedIn anyway? I first want to say thank you for having me here. It's an honour. I love what you're doing with UpLift Live. I think it's going to be incredible. And I'm excited to be there, not just to present but to learn and listen and connect with everybody else who is presenting there, because they're all incredible. And they see things in different ways. And that, to me, is really exciting. You know, so for me, it's a learning experience as well, as well as a sharing experience. Personally, I've been involved with LinkedIn since 2005. Actually, it may have been earlier, but I think I set up an account and then forgot how to log in. I was in that first 2 million, right, got the little letter from LinkedIn that said thank you for being in the first group. Been very active ever since. And it has actually helped me in my, I guess, career, in the sense, I've had 6 pivots in my career, each one I made choices. And about halfway through that career, LinkedIn came into effect, right. And I started to rebrand myself on LinkedIn when I was ready for these pivots. And it allowed me to do that. And that to me was fascinating. The other component of that, I had done a lot of international business. I've actually lived in several countries, I've done business in 140 countries, and I had these connections. And before LinkedIn, it was very difficult to stay connected, right, emails, you know, this was, you know, prior to all this advanced conferencing that you could do, LinkedIn became that connection. It allowed me to keep contact with all those people. So, I became very active. And that, to me, was a connectivity, and I truly believe that this is the platform for networking. And networking always beats not working, right, whether you're looking for a job or it's just that next opportunity, if you're not talking to people, if you're not out there finding out what they need, what you can help them with what you need, what they can help you with, if you're not doing that, then you're really kind of behind the 8 ball, right? You're always then trying to find something, whereas those things will find you if you network. And that's one of the most incredible, I think, features of LinkedIn, right, that nobody talks about as a feature. But it's that ability to network on a global scale, on a mass scale, and on a personal scale. And you and I have met through LinkedIn. So, this event will be our time to actually like real life meet, right? I don't even know how tall you are. And all these things, you know. So, that, to me, is incredible. And it's even more exciting. And we build everything here on LinkedIn together, you know, in that sense of that relationship. And I think, to me, that's the best part about being here. Yeah, fantastic. And I am so grateful for having the LinkedIn platform for meeting people around the world. And I certainly wouldn't have met the likes of you without this kind of connection platform, it is fantastic for that. What we haven't said anything about is the fact that you're now probably the most known person on LinkedIn with regards to sharing new features about the platform. So, you're a personal brand strategist. But you always come to mind whenever something changes, or something is new on LinkedIn. And I do wonder whether you sleep at times, because you're sharing so much good value stuff. Now, one of the challenges we have in a podcast several months ahead of time is that there's no way you can predict what LinkedIn is going to do several months down the line. But maybe you could tell us something about where you think LinkedIn is going, or maybe how many new features have we even seen in 2023? And how many do you think we might see in the next coming year? What do you think, Kevin? I'll cover all that. But first thing I want to say is, I can't do this alone. It takes a tribe I always say you know of eagle-eye and sharing hearts. People come to me because they know I'm going to share that I'm going to give them credit in the process. And we come together. Without that I couldn't do it. I used to do it when LinkedIn would have 40 features a year. That was easy, right? No biggie. And everybody kind of knew. Now, with the pace that they are implementing these new features. I couldn't do it all by myself. So, I have to give credit. I know you're even in there a couple of times for discovering things in the wild. We call it captured in the wild. That's how it works. And that's one of the things if you learn on LinkedIn that you don't have to compete, you can collaborate, even if you're doing the exact same thing. We're looking at a global market. Yeah. And the opportunity is there. So, that's the thing that drives me. Now, LinkedIn itself, I really think there's going to be a lot more AI involved in LinkedIn. And there's a plus and a minus to that, right? I'm one of those that I believe that artificial intelligence can be an incredible muse but it's never going to be a complete artist. And people need to realise that and it can also be the worst muse, right? Like any muse can be, it could get you in trouble really quickly. And it is your name, your brand, be careful. But LinkedIn is going to start implementing a lot more AI. And they're going to position it towards Premium as they as they have been doing. And that's because LinkedIn isn't really a social good site. We get social good from it, but it's a business. And they've realised, we've got to start adding things to Premium. So, we're going to see a lot more Premium additions that we don't see anywhere else, and a lot more AI into Premium, because that seems to be where they're placing it. So, that to me is a big change. How many we've had this a year, so far, we're sitting at about 127 new LinkedIn features. And a couple dozen changes, because I don't even call some of these things are changes, they might be changing in wording. You know, those are just changes. These are real, actual features. And they're coming. And I've got another 4 or 5 this week that we're trying to get in there and define because often somebody will find something and goes, this looks different. And we got to research it, is it really different? Because there's so much going on. And then you got to figure out, what does it mean? What are the impacts? What does it look like? How do we capture it? And then begin to share the process, and at the same time help people manage the frustration of I don't have it yet. And sometimes I don't have it yet, right? You might have it, you know, all different people may have it at different times. That's just part of the process. But when we share in this sense, we give everybody a little bit of empowerment. You know, they know what's coming. They know how to plan, they know how to explain, they don't get in front of people and present and get embarrassed because something, what is that, right? Or where did that go? They shouldn't have that knowledge. And to me, I just I love being in part of that process. And I can't take credit for it. But I definitely like to be there. Yeah, fantastic. And one of the great things about getting together in a room is that first of all, that will beat the whole AI thing, because we'll be actually, you know, hugging in the same room. But also it'll give us a bit more time where we're not just talking about here's a load of new features, but also some strategic chat about, why is any of this relevant? What do you really need to know to change in your business to make use of this new thing, or this thing that's changed? So, all of that strategic chat will be happening in Birmingham on Thursday, 21 March 2024. It's in Birmingham, UK, you can buy a ticket now. And it's uplift-live.com If you want to come and see one of the absolute apex operators of LinkedIn talking in Kevin D Turner, come and join us. We've got 6 other speakers as well as Kevin, it's going to be the first event of its type in the UK, probably one of the first in the world. And if you've ever been to a marketing conference before where LinkedIn has been a bit of an afterthought, it's the whole show here. So, you're really going to come away with some great takeaways. Kevin, I can't wait to meet you. It's going to be a real honour to share a stage with you. Can't wait for you to be there. Thank you for being part of UpLift Live. Meet one of the co-organisers of the UpLift live conference, the Human Content Writer, Jeremy Freeman. TRANSCRIPT I just couldn't believe that there's been nothing focused on LinkedIn in the UK. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. Let's have a change of pace and introduce one of the members of the Mission Control team running the show. Time to hop aboard and speak to the Human Content Writer, Jeremy Freeman. Jeremy Freeman, welcome to the UpLift Live podcast. You are one of our co-organisers, our Mission Control, for the conference project. But for anyone who doesn't know who you are, tell us a little bit about Jeremy Freeman, and who is a Human Content Writer? Ooh, mystery there. Well, thank you, John. It's an honour to be part of the UpLift Live Mission Control team. So, who am I? Well, I've been in business for over 25 years now. I started off a digital agency owner. And I sold that company about 6 years ago. It was very successful We were part of the very early days of the dot com boom. But I got a bit bored in digital and everything else. I got completely burnt out. And I did marketing, I did quite a few things until I became a proper Human Content Writer in the past year or so. And it's been really fantastic. I've actually loved it. I actually enjoy writing. I've been writing for years without realising it. I have to pay special tribute to Gus, who gave me the idea of changing my LinkedIn headline to Human Content Writer. And that's been a revelation for me, because a lot of people have actually approached me as a result of my headline. So, big lesson for everyone: think about your LinkedIn headline. Yeah, absolutely. And I remember when you were launching that headline, I wasn't convinced about it. I mean, I've helped loads of people with their headlines on LinkedIn over the years. I wasn't convinced by that one only because I thought, well, aren't all content writers humans? But you know, you've tried it and it seems to have worked really well for you. So, fantastic. So, the question now then becomes, what is a content writer? Why would a content writer be interested in LinkedIn and specifically a LinkedIn conference? Yeah. Well, what is a content writer? What I do is I write content specifically for LinkedIn and all other digital platforms, including websites, email marketing, company pages, and so on. I do quite a lot on content. I also do Google My Business as well, that a big, big thing I'm doing right now as well. And I mean, the point I want to touch on about being "human" is obviously we all have seen the proliferation of AI and we can see a lot of people are using AI but sadly lots of people are not using it responsibly. Now, I don't have anything against AI as long as you use it to give you ideas, support. Yes, you can ask it to generate an article for you and so on, but you do need to show that into a bit more human, coming from your own style and so on. Otherwise, it's so clear you're using AI. Why is it so important? For me, content wins every time on LinkedIn. For any writer or anyone who's thinking about doing more content on LinkedIn or some writing up, it really is an essential part of being part of LinkedIn. And I've been a huge fan of LinkedIn for the past few years. But more so in the past two years, where it's gone from maybe 5% of my business to 80% of my business coming from LinkedIn. Fantastic. And there's no better way of railing against AI than having community discussions and also actually meeting people face to face. And that's exactly what we're going to be doing in Birmingham next March. So, if you want to get a ticket to UpLift Live, the UK's first conference focused on LinkedIn, then come and join us on Thursday 21 March at Millennium Point in Birmingham. And if you want to get your ticket, you can go to uplift-live.com. And you'll meet Jeremy and loads of other people. We've got 7 speakers lined up, and you'll find out who they are very soon. So, Jeremy, what are you looking forward to in particular at the conference, without giving away who any of our speakers are, of course? I mean, you know, John, we spoke about this idea several months go. And we thought, got to do something about it. Why isn't there anything out there like this? We've been to lots of marketing conferences and so on, but but it always seems to be focused on Instagram, Facebook and a little bit on LinkedIn. I just couldn't believe that there's been nothing focused on LinkedIn in the UK, as far as I'm aware, and it's fantastic that we're going to be part of it. What I'm looking forward to: I'm looking forward to meeting the LinkedIn community. That's number one, and secondly, I'm really looking forward to hearing speakers give those extra nuggets that, you know, we've all perhaps thought about. But I'm sure we're going to learn new stuff there on the day. I know we are. I mean, we're definitely not going to be learning the basics of LinkedIn. Because by the speakers we've taken on, so anyone who's looking to come to conference, a complete beginner, it's probably not right for you. So, we are looking for LinkedIn power users and enthusiasts. Absolutely. Well said, yes. I mean, I've been to loads of marketing events where LinkedIn has been a bit of an afterthought, frankly, and this is very much going to be the central focus. And we've got some amazing speakers lined up who really know their stuff. And some of them are travelling internationally to speak in Birmingham. That's where we'll leave it for now. But, Jeremy, thanks for joining us. Thanks for all the work that you're helping us to do behind the scenes in getting this up and running. At some point, we will have to create some content about what it took to make this conference, but we'll leave that for another day. Again, thanks for being part of it. And see you all in Birmingham next year. Cheers, everyone. Cheers to Jeremy for joining us. I know he is super enthusiastic for this event, and we're all working hard behind the scenes to make it epic!
Our first speaker announcement is here! Meet Louise Brogan, a LinkedIn specialist based in Northern Ireland. She's going to be onstage at UpLift Live to speak about LinkedIn company pages. TRANSCRIPT … You should really have one because it gives you double whammy for more bang for your buck, as they say … This is Mission Control. It's time to find out who the first speaker is at the UpLift Live conference. Welcome back to the UpLift Live podcast. This is John Espirian from the Mission Control team for UpLift Live, which is the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference for LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. Intros are out of the way so it's time to hear from our speakers. OK, our first speaker announcement is here, and it is the wonderful Louise Brogan. She's based in Northern Ireland and is going to be onstage at UpLift Live to talk about LinkedIn company pages. Let's hop aboard and get to the interview with Louise! Louise Brogan, thank you for joining us on the UpLift Live podcast. You are going to be our first speaker announcement for the conference next year. Welcome and tell us why did Mission Control pick you as our speaker for this event? What do you know about LinkedIn? John, can I just say I am so excited about this whole thing! I'm so delighted to be asked to come and speak at UpLift Live. I can't wait to meet all the people who are going to be there. So, for those of you who don't know me, my name is Louise Brogan. I run a company called, well, it's actually called Louise Brogan Ltd but it's LinkedIn with Louise. I have been writing, talking, making videos about LinkedIn, probably only LinkedIn, for about 5 years. Started my business about 10 years ago. I wrote the lots of people will know me through. I used to write all the articles on LinkedIn for Social Media Examiner. And there's nothing I love more than getting in front of an audience and talking to them about how they can use LinkedIn for business. I have a podcast that I think it's about 5 years old now called LinkedIn with Louise, a YouTube channel called LinkedIn with Louise. If my name hadn't been Louise, I'm not sure what I would have called everything, because I like a bit of alliteration. So, yeah, that's me. I'm based in Northern Ireland. I work with a team of fabulous writers. We create content for companies who are mainly in the US and some also in the UK and Ireland. And I love everything geeking out about LinkedIn, a little bit like you, John. Fantastic. Well, thank you for making the trip over the water to come and see us. You are not going to be the only speaker who is not on the UK mainland. I'll leave it at that for now. And well done on the YouTube channel as well. I've struggled to get people to follow my YouTube channel. You've got 7000 subscribers or am I my way off? 7000 subscribers, I just hit 850,000 views. Fantastic. Yeah, get some YouTuber friends in your life, John. That's how I that's how I managed to figure out how to do so great. So, we've got a serious LinkedIn operator here, someone who's got their own podcast, their own successful YouTube channel, and you are going to be speaking to us about company pages, which is a very common question. I don't really specialise in them although I've got a few myself. Tell us what's moving and shaking on company pages. I mean, bear in mind that we're still many months away from the event. So, no doubt everything will have changed by the time the event comes around. But what are some of the things that we need to know or some of the pitfalls that people fall into with company pages? I think actually, company pages are the poor, neglected part of LinkedIn for a lot of people, but actually, they're a really, really powerful tool. One of the analogies I like to describe as to why people should consider their LinkedIn company page. And bearing in mind, of course, there are companies, like there's 60 million company pages on LinkedIn. And you have the solo entrepreneurs right up to the global multinationals who are using these company pages. But if you imagine being at an in person conference, like UpLift Live, and you and I walking around the room and chatting to people, John, are the individuals the personal profiles on LinkedIn. And when someone is intrigued by what I'm saying on stage, they want to find out more about me and my company. So, they might go over to the popup banner or the sponsor booth at the event. And that's how I kind of see the company page. It is a bit more of your traditional marketing place on LinkedIn. You should really have one because it gives you double whammy for more bang for your buck, as they say on LinkedIn. But there's lots of little tools that people are using. One of the key things I love on LinkedIn company pages are the newsletters. My clients have great success with the LinkedIn newsletters on their company pages. Because when they are published, the people who are subscribed to them receive them in their inboxes. And quite often the people that could be following your company pages might be somebody in that corporate role, who wants to get in touch with you to find out more about your services. And the newsletter arrives in their inbox outside of LinkedIn. So, into their Outlook or their whatever email inbox they're using. And people really take notice of that. So, that's a tool that I really love. And lots of there's lots of tools around employee engagement and employee advocacy, and that you can use on LinkedIn company pages as well but I'm not going to tell you too much about it because I want to save it all for Birmingham in March. Good stuff. I've got my own newsletter but it's only the personal one. I've got my hands full running that one and LinkedIn recently announced that you can have up to 5 of those now, no idea why. A lot to keep up with! So, anyway, if you want to buy a ticket and come along and see Louise and lots of other top apex operators of LinkedIn speak onstage in Birmingham next year, the details are on the screen. And for anyone who's listening to the podcast, if you go to uplift-live.com that will take you to the page where you can buy yourself a ticket. And we are looking forward really to this event. It's the first of its type that I'm aware of. You can tell me if you know any different, Louise, but I looked around for events that were specifically about LinkedIn. I couldn't find any, certainly none in the UK. So, we thought it was about time to get some of our friends together and really go nerdy and deep and talk about some of the some of the topics that you don't often get at other marketing events. And that was the birth of UpLift Live. I actually think, John, people will travel quite far for this, because as you say, there aren't really too many LinkedIn. I know there's one in Denmark that is focused on LinkedIn, there's definitely not in the UK and Ireland. I'm not really sure that there's one in the US or Canada either. I just think the power of being in the room of other people who are also really interested in what we're all going to be talking about, it's going to be phenomenal. It's going to be such a brilliant event. And I certainly will definitely be a speaker who is very happy to chat with everybody who's at the event. It's not to be one of those events where, you know, you're at the roped off area. I can't speak to the speakers. So, I'm really looking forward to meeting the whole community and just, it's going to be excellent. And also hearing from all the other speakers. I mean, it's not often you get to go to a conference where you're speaking about one thing, and everybody else is speaking about something completely different that you're not really interested in. I think all the speakers are going to be really interested in what every other speaker has to say as well, which again, is a really powerful thing. I think it's going to be an excellent event. Can't wait. Fantastic. Thank you, Louise. And yes, I very much hope that there's going to be some intermingling between the speakers and the attendees. I'm all about that, really. And hopefully, because we're targeting people who are really either LinkedIn specialists or power users or enthusiasts about the topic, then hopefully we can all get nerdy together. I'm really looking forward to it, so is Gus and Jeremy, who's helping with the co-organising event. Thanks again for being our first speaker announcement. Really excited about this, Louise. I will see you in Birmingham in March. Can't wait! Excellent. Thanks, John. Thank you so much! That was fab! Big thanks to Louise for being our first speaker announcement. We can't wait to bring you more speakers soon!
A quick intro to UpLift Live as we build to launch the UK's first LinkedIn-focused conference on Thursday 21 March 2024 at Millennium Point in Birmingham. TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone, and welcome to the UpLift Live podcast. This is a podcast to tell you a little bit more about the upcoming UpLift Live conference. This event is going to be the first of its kind – a conference in the UK, specifically focusing on LinkedIn and aimed at LinkedIn specialists, power users and enthusiasts. My name is John Espirian. I call myself the relentlessly helpful® LinkedIn nerd. And I'm a LinkedIn consultant based in the UK. My whole thing is digging into the techie, nerdy side of LinkedIn. And so a conference like this is something I've always wanted to attend. But it didn't look as though there was any sign of that happening. And so I decided to set up my own, with the help of a couple of colleagues from my Espresso+ community. If you haven't heard of Espresso+ before, it's an online community primarily for small business owners who want learning, support and accountability in improving their visibility on LinkedIn and online. Anyway, two of my Espresso+ members are joining me to form "Mission Control" on this project. And the three of us are running the UpLift Live conference together. So, along with me, John Espirian, my Mission Controllers are Jeremy Freeman, the Human Content Writer, and Gus Bhandal, the Marketing Guru. That cool audio sting at the top and tail of the show was put together for us by another Espresso+ member, Mark Deeks, also known as That Piano Guy, and keeping in tune with the whole lift-off and space vibe for the UpLift Live conference, the musical intro should be reminiscent of The Final Countdown by Europe. And just to confirm, there won't be any long hair or guitars at the event. So, I've never run a public podcast before but it seemed to make sense to give you a little introduction to the experts who will be speaking onstage at UpLift Live. Each is an apex operator of LinkedIn, and will be delivering loads of value across the big day, which is scheduled for Thursday 21 March 2024 at Millennium Point in Birmingham in the UK. You can find out more and get your ticket at uplift-live.com – OK, that's enough for now. Stay tuned to the airwaves to hear more from us and our speakers. Lift-off is coming soon. So, thanks for listening, and stick with us as we prepare for launch. This is Mission Control … over and out.UpLift Live Mission Control

Check out this week's episode of Insight Out with my guest Mark Schaefer! One of my favorite episodes of Insight Out is my conversation with John Espirian. During that interview, he mentioned his mentor was a guy named Mark Schaefer. Since I respect John so much, I decided to read Mark's book Known, and invite him on the show. He is in the Top 10 of the most re-tweeted marketing authorities in the world and was listed as one of the Top 10 authorities on Social Selling by Forbes. He is among the world's most recognized social media authorities and has been a keynote speaker at some of the most prominent conferences in the world. This was a fascinating conversation and even explores some emerging trends like nostalgia marketing and synthetic influencers that may just blow you away. John created an interactive map so we can see where everyone is from. He also talks about his volunteer work, writing books and generosity. Making Conversations Count: Honest, relatable conversations with business leaders
Squash down on imposter syndrome by unsquashing yourself We're Making Conversations about unsquashing yourself Count! "Why am I thinking that? Why am I reacting like that? Why am I getting a little annoyed about this other person's website just because I think it's better than mine... well, what's going on?..." Trisha Lewis, Making Conversations Count - (March 2022) Psst! Low on data? Here's a lower bandwidth version for you. Does Trisha need to help you with unsquashing yourself? Do you ever feel like you're not good enough? Do you put yourself down and find it hard to own your accomplishments? If so, you're not alone. Many people suffer from imposter syndrome, which is the fear of being exposed as a fraud. This often leads to us portraying ourselves in a way that is untrue to who we are. This can be damaging both professionally and personally. Luckily, there is help available. Who is Trisha Lewis and what does she bring to this episode of everyone's favourite telemarketing trainer's podcast? In this week's episode of Making Conversations Count, telemarketing trainer Wendy Harris chats with Trisha Lewis to discuss the importance of communications coaching and learn how it can help you overcome imposter syndrome. And ultimately how it can help you with unsquashing yourself. You'll learn: What is unsquashing and how does it relate to imposter syndrome? How can we recognise when we're squashing ourselves What tools we can use today in order to begin the unsquashing process What's Trisha's book all about and do you need it? How Trisha can further help you "...that "unsquashy" word is the intriguing one, because obviously, if you don't know me, you'll think, "What the heck is she talking about?" But that's kind of what I do with clients. I unsquash them when I unsquash their business, or help them to, I should say. So, it is all about communication, I mean everything's about communication, and that's my background as an actor, professional speaker; if you like, professional communicator." The Business of You: Personal Branding for Subject Matter Experts
“Build relationships through those comments and through direct messages because the more you support others, the more those people will want to support you,” encourages John Espirian, copywriter and author of Content DNA. In today's episode, John shares his experience with creating a memorable brand for himself on LinkedIn and tips for how you can best grow your brand and your business on the platform. John prides himself on creating “relentlessly helpful content.” This catch-phrase launched a positive change for John's personal brand because it is intriguing, meaningful, and memorable. By weaving this phrase into all of his content, he has been able to reinforce and grow his message. John's tips for being successful on LinkedIn include crafting a compelling headline, being consistent with your brand's image and voice, and writing thoughtful comments on posts from those in your industry. John explains that he actually gets most of his business from interacting in the comments of other people's posts. Tune into this week's episode of The Business of You for a conversation with host Michelle Griffin and special guest John Espirian on the importance of building a community on LinkedIn and how it can benefit your brand and business. Quotes • “I think it's much easier to be known if you're just trying to build up your column of visibility in one spot instead of trying to spread it out. It's like a spotlight almost instead of a broad beam. So, that's the approach I took…I found that people who focus on being known for one thing in one space are more likely to succeed than people who try to do absolutely everything on every platform.” (04:54-05:24) • “I said, ‘I'm going to create relentlessly helpful content.' I didn't even think about it. The words just poured out. As soon as I said it, people started echoing it back to me, and I realized I was onto something. That was really the beginning of the change of my personal brand…As soon as I had something that someone would echo and remember, that gave me an advantage. That came about through luck, but as soon as I realized it, I started using it in everything. Every headline you see from me will have that phrase in there…You want something that is interesting, differentiated, easy to remember, easy to say and that still conveys some meaning, it's not just froth. So, just re-emphasizing that message over and over again, turning up, talking about the same topics. Having the same shape every time you show up, the same way of talking, the same visual appeal. It just reinforces your message and makes it much easier for people to remember you and people to refer you.” (06:21-07:29) • “First of all you've got to get that headline of your LinkedIn profile nailed. Especially the first 40 characters, because it's something that follows you all around LinkedIn. Whenever you show up, your name, your photo, your first 40 characters that's what everyone will see. They might see more, but they'll see that at a minimum. If your first 40 characters of your headline don't tell a compelling reason about what your value proposition is in an interesting way, people will just look you over…and part two is commenting relevantly on other people's content…It's actually more effective to go and find relevant conversations…and turn up and write something supportive, authoritative, relevant to your industry. Because if you marry that with an interesting headline and a good comment, the people who are watching will go, ‘Wow! Who is this person? We need to find out more about them'...and actually that's where most of my business comes from.” (17:32-18:44) • “Build relationships through those comments and through direct messages because the more you support others, the more those people will want to support you.” (21:04-21:11) • “Define what your brand is and keep showing up as that brand. You're never gonna see a blue Coke can…be that distinctive brand.” (30:37-30:47) • “I always keep coming back to ‘a rising tide lifts all boats.' I put that in my book. I don't really believe in competition. I just believe in trying to help people do good things and then other good unexpected things can come from that and everyone's level goes up. So, I'm not really scared of competition, I just want to help more people. That's what it's all about for me.” (33:17-33:40) Connect with John Espirian: https://linkedin.com/in/johnespirian/ https://youtube.com/JohnEspirian Connect with Michelle Griffin, Personal Brand Strategist/Founder, BRANDthority: • Website: YourBrandYourBusiness.com • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michellebgriffin/ • Get active on LinkedIn: Join The #365 Creators, my community of 900+ global professionals supporting one another as we create content, connection, and community on LinkedIn.
