Virtual networking can boost your firm's visibility if done right. Here's how to make it work without spending a fortune or too much time.
If you've ever found yourself wondering why you keep landing clients who don't value your skills, your time, or your expertise, you might need to revisit how you position yourself, how you communicate your value, and how you negotiate your role in your client's business. That's why today I want to talk about what high-level clients actually look for in a VA. And I'll tell you right now, it's not what you think. It's not about being the fastest or the cheapest. It's not about saying yes to everything or being available 24/7. It's definitely not about how many software tools you've used or whether you've done the exact same thing for someone else. It's about something deeper. Something that, once you understand it, can completely change the types of clients you attract and the way they treat you. And it starts with knowing the difference between low-end clients and high-level ones. Let's start there! And if you're looking for more support in building a confident and profitable VA business, check out my programs and services on my website - the link in in the show notes but you can go to YourVAMentor.com/links for everything I do. Thanks for tuning in to this episode - be sure to share it with a VA colleague if you think they would find it valuable. That's all I've got for you this week. I'll see you next time!

Listen now on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.—Kamila has a background in Anthropology and Human Ethology, which has always fueled her curiosity about people and their behaviors. However, she started my career in management consulting at KPMG but quickly realized how much she missed research. That's when she discovered user research and knew it was the perfect fit for her. She joined a software company, Avast, where she worked her way up, learning the ins and outs of the field. After the tech industry faced a wave of layoffs, she took the leap into freelancing. Since then, she has worked with both small teams and large corporations, building a network of clients that keeps me inspired and engaged.Research isn't just work for her—it's what keeps her curious and motivated every day. And when she isn't researching or chatting about it, you probably (won't) find her getting lost in the mountains or exploring remote landscapes. In our conversation, we discuss:* How Kamila moved from an in-house user research role to freelancing and the key factors in making that decision.* Why freelancing is more than just research—covering project management, finances, marketing, and self-discipline.* How to frame your experience in a way that resonates with business-minded clients and attracts the right opportunities.* Understanding pricing models (hourly, project-based, day rate) and how to ensure your work is financially sustainable.* The importance of networking, proactive outreach, and leveraging word-of-mouth to build a steady pipeline of work. Some takeaways:* Freelancing is not just about research; it's a business. Becoming a freelance user researcher means wearing multiple hats—project manager, salesperson, accountant, and marketer. Success depends on mastering these additional skills, not just research expertise, and embracing the unpredictability that comes with being your own boss. Structuring your time and processes efficiently is just as crucial as delivering high-quality research work.* Confidence and stakeholder management are essential skills. One of the biggest differences between in-house and freelance work is the ability to push back on requests, frame research in business terms, and advocate for the right methods. New freelancers should be prepared to confidently lead discussions with clients, translating research findings into language that executives and product teams understand. Without strong stakeholder management, freelance researchers risk being seen as order-takers rather than strategic partners.* Your portfolio should highlight business impact, not just research methods. Potential clients care less about research techniques and more about measurable outcomes. A strong portfolio should emphasize how research influenced revenue, engagement, or decision-making rather than detailing methodologies. Tailoring case studies to align with each potential client's industry and specific challenges will significantly increase the chances of securing work.* Pricing correctly prevents burnout. When setting freelance rates, account for more than just living expenses—consider taxes, health insurance, vacation time, and unpaid work (such as admin and sales). Many new freelancers undercharge and struggle financially as a result, leading to overwork and stress. Planning for financial sustainability early on ensures long-term success and allows for flexibility when taking on projects.* Finding work requires proactive outreach. Clients don't magically appear, and waiting for inbound inquiries is rarely a reliable strategy, especially at the beginning. Successful freelancers attend networking events, directly reach out to potential clients, and sometimes offer small audits or heuristic evaluations to showcase value. A consistent effort in building relationships and demonstrating expertise often leads to referrals, which can become the most stable source of income over time.Where to find Kamila:* LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kamila-boudova-ux/* ADP List: https://adplist.org/mentors/kamila-boudovaThe Impact Membership : A space for user researchers who think biggerYou know your craft. One of the biggest mistakes I see VAs make is trying to do everything at once. Social media posts, cold emails, joining every networking group, tweaking their website… sound familiar? You're not alone - I do the same thing! While those are all great strategies in the long term, they can dilute your energy and results when you're looking for a VA client quickly. The key is choosing one strategy and going all in. Why? Because focus brings clarity, and clarity brings results. By narrowing your efforts, you can: Give your strategy the attention it deserves. Track your results effectively. Avoid feeling overwhelmed. So, what strategy should you choose? That's up to you and your strengths, but I'll guide you through an example here to help you decide and take action. I hope this framework gives you the focus and confidence to find your next client. Remember, it's all about taking consistent, intentional action. You've got this! You CAN get a client in a week. When it's your main focus and you do the right things, it's easier than you think. If you want to get really focused and move your VA business forward in just a week, you should join me for my 5 Day challenge From Consults to Clients that starts next week! Register at https://yourvamentor.com/5day! Thanks so much for being here this week, I'll see you next time!

Show Notes: River Tompkins, a 17-year-old high school senior, started his own consulting practice in Austin, Texas, with five different clients. He provides services in the experimental education space, helping school owners implement systems and train teachers. His first clients were a group of schools in Florida, where he worked on implementing student government and learner-driven accountability. He has been at Ackman Academy for 10 years, a learner-driven off-the-beaten-path education, and now he is going to other younger schools to share his experience. Finding Clients as a New Consultant To find clients, River emailed schools in Florida to see what they were doing and potentially get a teaching job. They eventually invited him to visit for a couple of days to consult. He now seeks out clients with the primary goal of consulting. He targets schools in the Acton Academy domain, as his experience at Acton Academy is not applicable to the general masses. River discusses the unique approach to education that he has developed. He explains that the Acton Academy is a learner-driven model where teachers guide students through their learning process, allowing them to see progress and make decisions. River shares more about the Acton Academy approach and how he sets pricing and payment for his consulting services. Educational Consulting Services Explained River discusses more about the Acton Academy approach and his plans for expanding his practice and mentions giving a guaranteed parent speech to every school he visits, which is his journey, how the Acton approach works and why, followed by a Q&A session. River mentions that the Acton Academy is open to different school types, age groups, and staff levels. The Acton Academy Education in Action The conversation turns to potential education and structure models that work in the Acton Academy by breaking it down into a range of dimensions. River explains that Acton Academy has small class sizes, with elementary students ranging from 20 to 40 kids, middle school students from sixth to eighth grade, and sixth to eighth graders in the same classroom. Acton Academy runs in person classes with online courses through programs like Khan Academy Newsela, allowing students to work on core curriculars like math and reading in the same space while working at their own pace with their own computer. The first half of the day focuses on individual studies, such as math and reading, while the second half is more project-based electives, such as science engineering or real-world skills. Teachers are known as guides while students take a proactive approach to learning. The older kids are encouraged to tutor and mentor the younger ones, focusing on leadership skills. Extracurricular activities are often outside of the school, as they are often independent of the school. Developing a Diagnostic Guide Will Bachman talks about mentoring in education, which can be divided into four dimensions: student-to-student mentoring, academic progression, and open-ended research programs. He suggests that these dimensions should be mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive, covering all aspects of the educational process. He also mentions the importance of parent involvement and homework and suggests that schools should be assessed based on their maturity model, which includes the maturity of the program, the novice stage, and the developing stage. He mentions that a diagnostic guide could be developed to help identify problems or opportunities. He suggests offering productized offerings, such as a student government module, which can be tailored to the specific needs of the school. The number one thing that VAs come to me for help with - and the ones that don't come to me also want to know this … ...where to find clients? We have this sense that when we build it they will come and that is so not the case when we start our VA business. We struggle trying to perfect our website, our social media like our IG grid, our branding - and then when we finally deem all of that to be perfect and ready, we have no idea how to get clients. To have a VA business, you need to have clients. Without it, you have a hobby - or a job that pays like crap. So you have to prioritize learning how to find clients in order for your VA business to be successful. And that starts with where to look, which is often the most important part. In a nutshell, you have to find the places where your people are hanging out, and then go hang out with them there. That's it, that's the advice. You know I tell you exactly this when we talk - when you ask for advice, that's what I tell you to do. To find the place, or places, you need to know who your people are - and then where they go. Today I will tell you 8 places to look for clients. Business can be hard if you don't. Once again, it's not about getting somewhere quickly. It's about having the right plan, with the right steps - and moving towards it every day. Find your people, find your places, and get clients. I'd love to help you get there. It's time. Finding clients is hard. And it might even be getting harder. But that doesn't mean you can't do it. In fact, there are lots of copywriters who don't struggle to book clients for weeks or months into the future. So how do you do it? On the 401st episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, Kira and Rob talk with client acquisition specialist, Ryan Guthrie, about the three ways to get clients. We go into depth on this. You're going to like it. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: It doesn't matter how good you are as a writer, if you don't have good, high-paying clients, you will never have a successful copywriting business. It all comes down to your ability to attract, connect with, and get hired by business owners who will pay you to help them tell their story. And even though we've talked about this topic a lot on this podcast, it seems as if there's always more to learn. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And for today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, my co-founder, Kira Hug, and I talked with copywriter and client acquisition specilist Ryan Guthrie. Like many of us, Ryan started out as a copywriter. But he cracked the code on finding clients early on, so other copywriters began asking him for help with their own pipelines. And he shared a lot of how he does it in today's interview. But before we jump in with Ryan… We have a new gift for you as a listener to the copywriter club podcast. We went through the past 400 episodes of this podcast looking for the ideas that our guests have shared over the past couple of years related to finding clients. We pulled out a bunch of our favorites and compiled them into a new pocket sixed guide that will inspire you as you look for ways to attract the right clients to your business. Ryan shares how he does it on this episode. But once you're done listening, or now if you are near your phone or computer, visit thecopywriterclub.com/pocket to download your own copy of this new guide. And with that, let's go to our interview with Ryan Guthrie... Kira Hug: All right, Ryan, let's start with your story. How did you end up as a client acquisition consultant? Ryan Guthrie: By doing a lot of other things first. I started copywriting in February of 2020, which is an awesome time to start something new. But I was going to be a nurse, right? And I just kind of fell out of love with it. I didn't want to go to work every day and see people having the worst day of their lives. And so I kind of dropped out of college a little bit. And my girlfriend at the time, who's now my fiance, said, Hey, you're a pretty good writer. Here's this course that showed up on my Instagram feed. It's an ad, take a look at it. So I took a look at it. And I was like, I can do this. Sure. It was a copywriting course. I can, I can do this. And so I like, fully dropped out of college and bought this course with all my savings to the horror of my mother. She was like, you know what, you go do this for a year and we'll see what it looks like after a year and then we'll talk about this again, right? So I did that, and so I worked at my regular job from like six to three, six in the morning, three in the afternoon, and then I would get home and I would just do copywriting stuff, right, from like four to like 10, doing hand copy and just trying to learn as much as I could going through this course. After about three months, I got my first client, and it's a funny story, people always think they need to be super polished for that first client. I did my first sales call in the parking lot of a Trader Joe's, And I took notes on the back of an organic cookie box. So just throwing that out there. That was my first ever sales call. I got that client. He paid me $400 for some emails. And then I was like, this is it.
