Power To Speak with Confidence. Conversations that will inspire and empower.
Is a TEDx talk on your ‘to do' list for 2024? If so, listen to this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking. It's a TEDx Special! My guests have all stood on that red circle. They've walked the walk and most definitely talked the talk! Alongside me will be TEDx event organiser, speaker and coach, Catherine Sandland, communication and Unsquashing expert, Trisha Lewis and Multi-Story man, speaker and TEDx emcee, Andrew Thorp. If you're interested in speaking, coaching speakers, organising an event, or hosting one, this episode will answer SO many questions for you. How do I find an event? How do I apply to be a TEDx speaker? Do I need to be a confident speaker? How long should a TEDx talk be? A TEDx has been on my bucket list for years but only in the last couple have I even contemplated actually going for it. So, this is a dream panel for me and it was a fabulous conversation. You are feeling a bit stale and stuck. Your motivation is wobbly. Time to explore your options you think. But how you go about this exploration might be more meaningful than you realise. This episode explores how to explore. The episode is inspired by the journaler and author Marion Milner (aka Joanna Field) and the two psychologists behind the self-discovery tool known as the 'Johari Window'. What would you think if you were invited to explore your options by exploring your unknown unknowns? What does it mean to explore with 'wide attention' versus 'narrow attention'? How can you practically use these insights to go on a mini voyage of discovery - a bit like being aboard the Starship Enterprise - but very down to earth. You can see the video of this episode on my YouTube Channel. If the concept of 'unsquashing' intriques you - I invite you to explore my book and TEDx talk and connect with me on Instagram and LinkedIn. Stop beating yourself up! Not so easy. Negative self talk, inner critic, catastrophising, self-doubt spirals - they are a natural consequence of being human. But - our rush to beat ourselfs up when we believe we have 'failed' in some way - is a real squasher! It stops us moving forward and often results in us wallowing in a swamp of self-doubt for hours, weeks or even years! In this episode you will join me in exploring why we do this negative self-talk and - crucially - how we can manage it - accept it and then do something to move us forward. There is a kind of mind trick involved - and it revolves around a well researched concept - 'distanced self talk' - Article here. I also recommend the book - 'Chatter' by Ethan Kross. And - my book - 'The Mystery of the Squashed Self' and TEDx talk. Subscribe and share - please!

Making Conversations Count: Honest, relatable conversations with business leaders
Carrying On The Conversation about 'unsquashing' yourself to overcome imposter syndrome that Wendy had with Trisha Lewis Are you ready to unsquash yourself? Effective communication Showing up isn't always easy. And sometimes we find it much more comfortable to reduce the chances of feeling judgement and shame by holding back. And that's not good for anybody. And it's exactly why it's important for us to work on 'unsquashing' ourselves so we can bring our gifts to the world. Wendy's been unsquashing for a while now! Wendy's recently been working extra hard on unsquashing herself, and this is being reflected in the information and tips she's sharing with listeners. She's owning her gift for using conversations to change lives and businesses. [00:00:05] Neal: I do love that. I do love that. it is true. What you said in the conversation about that makes absolutely no sense, but it makes perfect sense when you know what it's talking about. [00:00:16] So communication coaching, essentially. [00:00:19] Wendy: Yeah. I mean the, the boring version versus the 'Impact' version. So yeah, communication coach versus "UNSQUASHABLE!" And I think Trisha has a really good insight on the awareness of what holds us back in conversation and even demonstrated it herself by messaging me the day before, because she'd had that minor operation on her face and her nose. [00:00:52] So I think it was a really important message that even she sometimes squashes herself because she was thinking outside of herself. And I was like, no, actually I want to know all about what happened with your nose. And let's flip this into a positive so that we can give a positive message about staying safe in the sun. [00:01:20] And she was up for it. And I think it really worked and demonstrated kind of what we all go through. Even when we're experts. We can still second guess ourselves. [00:01:34] Neal: Hence why you need someone on the outside to be your cheerleader and just say, you know what? You should be feeling a bit more confident about what you bring to the table, because it's really interesting. [00:01:47] I once knew somebody that was on the face of it incredibly arrogant. [00:01:53] Wendy: Did she have a big nose too. [00:01:58] Neal: No, he, he didn't have a big nose. That was one of the things he didn't have that was big. But the ego, I mean, on the face of it, he had a massive ego and he once turned around to somebody. And I overheard this conversation and somebody had essentially accused him of being arrogant and he turned around and he said, no, It's only arrogance, if you can't back it up. [00:02:21] And part of me thought, oh, but actually in line with what Trisha's teachings are actually he's unsquashed himself and he's being an unapologetic about it. So at what point, does it stop being egotistical, arrogant, fool? And at what point does it become no actually unsquashing himself, which I found fascinating to consider and ponder. [00:02:46] Did a lot of pondering on that. [00:02:47] Wendy: Yeah, it's that awareness, isn't it. And, Trisha goes on to talk about the conscious choices that we need to make in order to be seen and to be heard and that was something that, you know, she got me thinking, cause sometimes you just kind of run out of steam on an idea. [00:03:08] and I know you and I have talked about, you know, personal branding, and to me, it's just who you are at that time. And that grows and changes. And I think it does also come back to who you surround yourself with. I mean, Trisha talks about that community, you know, that you are the media, the John Esperians previous, you know, activists, Janine, Coombs, going on about feminism and stuff like that. [00:03:36] it's just fascinating that it really just, it brought up a whole heap of fresh curiosity for me. To revisit what I was stuck on.... it's not that I'm stuck ever to communicate, but what I really want to communicate. It's that importance and purpose of it, rather than just doing it for doing its sake. [00:04:06] So she's helped me. She won't know. I'll have to tell her.

Seeing his kids freaking out, Matt freaked out on the inside instead of calling people in the program or using his tool.John I joins him and they talk about how to be prepared for the unexpected moment and how to get through tough moments. On this week's show, I'm talking about weight loss, how to build a strong plan and what to do if you hit challenges along the way. I'm joined by Trisha Lewis, of Trisha's Transformation who has been incredibly honest about her weight loss journey so far. ‘I don't know how I didn't cop it already Karl but I had an eating disorder…I have a binge eating disorder and from there I went to therapy and I realised I needed a bit of help with my head and from the first session everything made sense to me.' Trisha tells me how the pandemic impacted her weight loss plan and how she has gotten back on track and finally found balance in her life. Like many of us, Trisha has found therapy helpful in learning to set boundaries and say ‘no'. ‘If you feel that you don't have boundaries and you're that person that says yes the whole time chance the ‘no' every so often because it's actually so refreshing and you realise how much time you actually have and when you say ‘yes' it's because you actually want to. Trisha has written a new book, Trisha's 21 Day Reset which gives you the foundations of a resilient weight-loss plan, so that when you fall off the wagon you don't have to beat yourself up – you simply reset. Trisha, who is best known for documenting her weight loss experience on her instagram, says it hasn't been easy: “Failures, setbacks and curveballs have all been part of the journey, but I want to spread the message that weight loss doesn't have to be about constant deprivation and self-punishment.” As a chef, she also gives top tips on how to eat better: “I believe it's important for people losing weight that they don't lose out on flavour as well.” For more episodes, tips and advice from the show just go to: www.independent.ie/podcasts/the-re…health-podcast/ And you can get in touch - I'm @KarlHenryPT on Instagram and Twitter and realhealth@independent.ie. Power To Speak with Confidence. Conversations that will inspire and empower.
This is my Christmas Creative Conversation with communication guru, Trisha Lewis. FASCINATING! Trisha Lewis is forensic about how you communicate with yourself and others. Through a series of ‘misaligned' jobs, the actor in her kept popping back up. Trisha is now a happy communication coach, podcast host, speaker and author.
After an indulgent mid-term Ray Foley is ready to reset and who better to bring the motivation than Trisha Lewis. Despite the Halloween Decorations being down the crew aren't quite ready for Christmas and there's now €4,300 up for grabs on the 745 Secret Sound.
I am joined by the communications expert, Trisha Lewis. If you want to be listened to more and have people engage more with you, you need to listen to this episode. We hop right in and talk about what people struggle with when they communicate. One challenge is having your voice heard in meetings by overthinking how you will be judged. To rectify this, make sure to know how to listen well and speak with clarity. You need to find a balance of both. I mention some of my experiences in the past. Then we spoke about communicating at networking events. Relax and use humor to start discussions. It will help you break the ice. If people do not respond to your efforts, move on. It was not worth your time then. To get better at communicating, use role play. I love to facilitate role play sessions! Learn how to speak with knowledge and authority by practicing. Trisha offers up a couple of strategies that she uses, including TOTO: Try Observe, Try Observe, vulnerability weaving, conscious tweaking. You can also work with coaches, mentors, and accountability partners to help you communicate better. Also, keep Trisha in mind ;) I love the idea that Trisha uses an alter ego, Investigator Lewis. I encourage you to find your alter ego! In Episode 6 we have the terrific Trisha Lewis, also known as Trisha's Transformation on Instagram. Trisha takes us on her journey from being morbidly obese and in the depths of depression, to learning to love herself enough to change her life forever. This uplifting and inspiring episode explains how someone fighting an incredibly difficult internal battle, can master that reset button, start again, and 'beat the bulge' for good. This woman went from avoiding photos completely to filming workouts for the nation to see. Over the next hour we discuss how to remove the bully that lives in your brain, making weight loss a positive, enjoyable process, dealing with gym fear and handling plateaus in weight loss. This is a woman who went from lashing out at the ones she loved and physically feeling like she was going to die, to waking up every morning, tying those shoelaces and getting shit done. Her basic, yet powerful daily mantra ‘do you want to be fat or fit, happy or sad, healthy or dying will help so many embarking on their journey.Visit https://theothersideofperfect.com/Trisha Lewis https://www.instagram.com/trishas.transformation
As a communication coach, Trisha Lewis helps her clients remove barriers to success and unleash their full potential. Part of her role is to help people manage their 'inner critic' and overcome what's known as 'Impostor Syndrome' Trisha describes Impostor syndrome as an irrational and pervasive feeling of self-doubt. A sense that you are getting away with it - you are a fraud and you will be found out soon! Putting success down to luck rather than your skills. Comparing yourself to others and having a sense that everyone else has got it together - and they will realise that you haven't. Imposter Syndrome is very common amongst professional experts, emerging thought leaders, speakers, authors and entrepreneurs. Indeed, it's a major barrier that often stops smart and passionate people from publishing their own content, sharing their stories and ideas in public, getting up on stage and speaking, and positioning themselves as a go-to informational resource on a particular topic. As Trisha says: Don’t spend too long inside the cage of Impostor Syndrome - unleash your potential!
