I sat down with scholar, Nilesh Kumar to explore how Korean cinema has reflected shifting notions of gender, identity, and social structure across decades. From the angry men of the Korean New Wave to the defiant heroines of modern streaming hits, this conversation examines how bodies on screen become battlegrounds for power, memory, and desire. We begin by talking about how technology defines Park Chan-wook's groundbreaking movie Oldboy, as well as its absence of allegory, signaling the start of post-modern Korean cinema. Then, we explore three main themes in Korean cinema across time: Masculinity, femininity, and queer representation. The first section sees us discuss Chilsu and Mansu (1988), Peppermint Candy (1999), A Single Spark (1995), Whale Hunting (1984), Burning (2018), and Parasite (2019). We then turn our attention to Hostess Cinema (1974-1982), Yeong-ja's Heydays (1975), Right Then, Wrong Now (2015), Ballerina (2023), Han Gong Ju (2013), and My Sassy Girl (2001). Finally, we look at King and the Clown (2005), Moonlit Winter (2019), Mine (2021), The Handmaiden (2016) as well as the importance of Seo Dong-jin and Paul B. Preciado. I was particularly impressed by how Nilesh put each section in context, describing the importance of the socio-economic and political conditions of the time. Nilesh Kumar is from England, of Gujarati-Indian background, and is based in South Korea. He is a Film Curator and co-founder of the Seoul-based underground-movable cinema, STEAK FILM and the sexuality themed, STEAK CINEMA. Contemporary and performance artist Paul Maheke moves between France, Congo, and Canada, exploring the ‘archive of their body' through drawing and dance, via Taboo Durag (2021). To Be Blindly Hopeful emerged from the very last sentence of a journal that Paul Maheke kept between August 2020 and June 2021, capturing the turbulence of the COVID pandemic. Central to Maheke's practice is a delicate dance between the individual and the collective, personal and broader sociopolitical contexts, echoing the sentiment expressed by bell hooks, who reminds us that ‘the space of our lack is also the space of possibility.' Currently based in France, Paul shares works 'staged' in previous exhibitions at South London Gallery, Chisenhale Gallery, and Tate Modern, highlighting how the ‘new' drawings, prints, book illustrations, and paintings on display here have long formed part of his practice. He explains how performance and dance can be both emancipatory and trapping, with respect to queerness, masculinity and gender, and the reality of being ‘brown body looked at my white audience' - drawing on his lifelong admiration for the French-born ice skater, Surya Bonaly. We discuss Paul's popular culture and academic Influences like Grace Jones and Félix González-Torres, Audre Lorde and Édouard Glissant, and Bruce Nauman to Paul B. Preciado - not as icons but real, complex people. Finally, Paul highlights how his work changes in its global travels, from the Baltic Triennale in Estonia, to Johanneburg, South Africa - and, drawing on collaborations with family members and fellow artist Melika Ngombe Kolongo (Nkisi) for the Congo Biennale in 2021, his personal relationship with arts institutions on the continent, as a diasporic artist. ⁠Paul Maheke: To Be Blindly Hopeful⁠ runs at MOSTYN, Wales until 29 June 2024. We meet artist Li Hei Di on the eve of their debut UK solo exhibition 700 Nights of Winter at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London.In new paintings, Li explores primal, sexual urges with their signature fluid application of paint. Balanced on a knife edge between abstraction and representation, paintings feature figures that swim in and out of view beneath diaphanous veils of paint; each layer offers a different world, or a portal to an altered oneiric space, guided by desire and emotion. Multiple perspectives collide and overlap, creating dynamic compositions that offer manifold realities within a single work. Luminescent orbs appear as though submerged in deep water, giving the compositions a nebulous quality.Li's multidisciplinary practice is concerned with repressed desire, rooted in personal experiences of navigating hetero-normative environments that obstruct open expressions of queerness. Their work eschews rigid sexual codes and gender categories in favour of a liberated approach to fantasy and beauty, which exists apart from hierarchical and dominant social structures. For Li, the dichotomous relationship between sexual arousal and repression finds a parallel in the covert ways in which erotic love flourishes on cold winter nights, as bodies become entangled in pursuit of warmth, lost but for the other. The existential threat posed to romantic love by the culture of narcissism engendered under globalised capitalism sets the stage in Li's work for the negation of the self, in the radical recognition of another, as espoused in the writings of cultural theorist Byung-Chul Han.This commingling of two entities is found not only in humankind but in the natural world too, and Li's work explores the role animal pollinators play in the reproductive lives of plants. Such co-evolved relationships encapsulate the exuberance of life in connection with erotic activity and, therefore, death.In this new body of work Li also investigates the ways in which desire manifests and, notably, declines under the ‘pharmacopornographic regime', a term coined by philosopher Paul B. Preciado to describe the intersection of the pharmaceutical and pornographic industries. Li Hei Di (b. 1997, Shenyang, China) lives and works in London and received her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art and a BA (Hons) from Chelsea College of Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 2024, Li will have a solo exhibition at Pond Society, Shanghai and will be part of a group exhibition at Le Consortium, Dijon. This year's Berlinale saw the filmmaking debut of acclaimed philosopher Paul B. Preciado with the feature, Orlando, My Political Biography. Born in Spain and based in France, Preciado is the author of a number of groundbreaking texts about gender and sexuality—including his 2008 work of "auto-theory," Testo Junkie, in which Preciado weaves reflections on his experience of taking testosterone with ruminations on how the body and its desires are formulated, controlled, and regulated by society. Precaido's first film is as much of an exuberant formal invention as that book was. He was invited to make a documentary about his life, and instead, enlisted a diverse ensemble of trans individuals to interpret their lives through the text of Virginia Woolf's 1928 novel, Orlando: A Biography, which details the centuries-spanning adventures of an aristocrat who magically changes gender overnight. Blurring the boundaries between self and other, documentary and fiction, fantasy and reality, and past and present, Preciado crafts a work that explodes binaries not only in content, but also in form. On today's episode, Film Comment editor Devika Girish interviews Preciado about the making of Orlando, My Political Biography, his decision to make a collective portrait rather than a biopic, and about the violence that cinema has inflicted on trans people across history—and how we can use moving images to pave the path for a different future. Al otro lado del río y entre los árboles llega por fin a la gran pantalla, ha sido una mujer, la directora Paula Ortiz, con la que hablamos, la que se ha embarcado en esta aventura, es su tercera película, su primera rodada en inglés y con un elenco internacional increíble basada en la novela que escribió Ernest Hemingway y en la que está basada. toda una canción de amor, vida y muerte. O Corno ha sido una de las grandes sorpresas de la temporada cinematográfica no solo en nuestro país, Concha de oro reciente Festival de San Sebastián, también en el de Toronto. O' Corno, es el segundo largometraje de Jaione Camborda, una historia sobre la maternidad, el aborto y la voluntad de las mujeres. Me he hecho viral, es otra de las cintas que llega a las salas protagonizada por Blanca Suarez, una historia basada en el caso real de una mujer que usó en pleno vuelo el dedo de su marido dormido para desbloquear su teléfono y descubrir una infidelidad. Si l'on s'en tient au rôle le plus souvent joué par les psychanalystes dans le débat public ces dernières décennies, on peut aisément avoir le sentiment que leur savoir et leur pratique sont orientés vers le conservatisme et vers le maintien de l'ordre symbolique et social, en opposition aux avancées pour l'égalité des droits obtenues de haute lutte ou encore objets des combats féministes et LGBTI+. Bien au contraire, montre Laurie Laufer dans un livre récent pour lequel Julien Théry l'a reçue, la psychanalyse a vocation à se réinventer pour intégrer les formes contemporaines d'existence et d'éros. Dans son livre paru chez La Découverte, « Vers une psychanalyse émancipée. Renouer avec la subversion », Laurie Laufer (qui est non seulement psychanalyste, mais aussi professeuse à l'Université Paris-Cité et directrice du directrice du CRPMS, Centre de recherche psychanalyse, médecine et société) renoue avec ce qui fut la vocation première de la psychanalyse chez son fondateur, Freud, tout comme, par la suite chez Lacan : la subversion des préjugés dominants, la réinvention par l'ouverture au contemporain. Trois moments de l'histoire intellectuelle et militante offrent à la psychanalyse, selon Laurie Laufer, les moyens de dépasser la sclérose de l'enfermement dans une expertise rétrograde de la « vie psychique » : le mouvement féministe, avec ses deux branches fondatrices, différentialiste et radicale (Antoinette Fouque, Monique Wittig), apparues à partir des années 60, la révolution post-moderniste due non seulement à Foucault et au foucaldisme (avec les 4 volumes de « L'histoire de la sexualité » parus à partir de 1976) ainsi qu'à Deleuze et Guattari, mais aussi à des penseuses et militantes états-uniennes comme Gayle Rubin, enfin la pensée queer et trans élaborée aujourd'hui par des figures comme Paul B.
