The science shows we're doing it all wrong! New research about virtual and offsite meetings shows they're leading to burnout and lack of engagement. We're doing it all wrong. In this episode Lone Rock Leadership cofounder Russ Hill shares three new scientific research studies that shows how we need to adjust our virtual meetings and our offsite schedules to boost engagement and drive results.• Virtual meetings should ideally last 30 minutes, never exceeding 2 hours• Limit meetings to 3-4 per day with substantial breaks between them• For offsites, start later (9-10am) or at noon, not 8am• End meetings around 2:30-3pm when brains naturally disengage• Block your calendar to prevent back-to-back scheduling• Leave people "wanting more" rather than completely depleted• Microsoft's brain activity research shows significant stress during back-to-back meetings• Long meetings create both mental underload (boredom) and overload (information saturation)• Shorter meetings lead to more engagement and better outcomes• Allow time for networking, individual work, and natural connectionsShare this episode with a colleague, your team or a friend. Some of you just want to be liked. Others of you are obsessed with the scoreboard. The crowd and the metrics shouldn't be your ultimate gauges of success or value. In this episode Lone Rock Leadership Cofounder Russ Hill explores where leaders seek validation and how this fundamental choice defines leadership effectiveness, sustainability, and ability to scale.• First Leaders seek validation from the crowd, prioritizing harmony and being liked• This approach creates pleasant environments but often fails to drive results• Second Leaders seek validation from scoreboard metrics, authority, and status symbols• While driving short-term results, this leadership style struggles with innovation and retention• The most effective leaders seek validation first internally, staying consistent with their principles• Trusted advisors who provide honest feedback form a second critical validation source• External validation—whether from crowds or scoreboards—is ultimately unreliable• Some people will unfairly judge you regardless of your actions or intentions• If you don't have critics, you're likely not making enough impact• Understanding your validation source requires honest self-assessmentShare this episode with a colleague, your team, or a friend. You've heard of all four companies. Two of them are battling massive declines. Two are incredible examples of growth. Why the difference? It all came down to their leadership teams' ability to lead through change and disruption. This is part two of our series on leading through change with Lone Rock Leadership Co-founder Russ Hill. • Pizza Hut and Subway demonstrate the consequences of failing to adapt to changing market conditions• Both chains failed to return to pre-pandemic revenue levels due to outdated business models• Chipotle doubled revenue and quadrupled net income by embracing digital innovation• Chick-fil-A nearly tripled per-store revenue through continuous innovation and future-focused leadership• The ChangeOS model reveals how organizations move through status quo, mourning, adapting, and innovating phases• Most struggling companies get stuck in the mourning phase, unable to accept new realities• Effective change leadership requires validating initial concerns while preventing extended mourning• Leaders must embody excitement about future possibilities rather than anxiety about disruption• Your value in the marketplace directly correlates to your ability to lead through changeShare this episode with a colleague, your team or a friend. Your brain hates and loves change. It despises it yet craves it at the same time. If it's true for your brain then it's true for all your employees too. So, as the rate of change increases in the world around us - think tariffs, think AI, think market swings, think customer demands, think hybrid work - have you stopped to consider what your strategy is for leading through change? Here's some of what Lone Rock Leadership co-founder Russ Hill dives into in this jam-packed episode:• Status quo bias makes us perceive changes as threats, triggering unconscious resistance• Novelty seeking drives our desire for innovation, new experiences, and fresh approaches• The modern workplace is transforming at unprecedented speed, requiring greater adaptability• Leaders must position themselves on the past-present-future continuum based on their role• Senior executives need to operate 6-12 months ahead while building teams that handle present operations• Effective change leadership acknowledges both our resistance to change and desire for innovation• Organizations moving too slowly risk irrelevance while those changing too frequently create fatigue• Building strong teams enables leaders to focus on future strategy rather than present operationsIn our next episode, we'll explore the tactical aspects of leading people through the three stages of organizational change.--Get weekly leadership tips delivered to your email inbox:Subscribe to our leadership email newsletterhttps://www.leadin30.com/newsletterConnect with me on LinkedIn or to send me a DM:https://www.linkedin.com/in/russleads/Tap here to check out my first book, Decide to Lead, on Amazon. Organizational disruption is a critical yet often overlooked aspect of leadership that can dramatically enhance innovation and growth when applied strategically. Too many companies keep the same people in the same seats for too long, creating stagnation that hurts creativity, motivation, and ultimately, market performance.• Johnson & Johnson's military-style three-year rotation model promotes innovation and fresh thinking• Whitney Johnson's book "Disrupt Yourself" details the S-curve of innovation and why personal disruption is essential• Strategic disruption increases motivation, innovative thinking, and helps break through status quo mentality• Organizations with the same leadership for extended periods often see flattened growth curves• Top executives regularly make strategic changes to their leadership teams to maintain momentum• Not all organizations need disruption—some currently need stability first• Thoughtful, strategic implementation works better than chaotic reorganizationShare this episode with a colleague, your team or a friend. We call them silos but what we really are describing is division that exists in our organizations. Division is one of the biggest issues in society, and this same problem exists within many of the companies we lead.• What truly creates a team is having both a common desired purpose and a common external threat• Organizations with cultural problems typically have internal enemies (other departments) rather than external threats• Underdeveloped leaders are holding organizations back when companies only train on technical skills and not leadership• Purpose must drive organizations, not just revenue or growth targets• Unity happens when teams share common metrics instead of competing departmental goals• Leaders must frequently communicate both purpose and the common threats the organization facesShare this episode with a colleague, your team, or a friend. 348: What happens when leaders stop asking questions? In this episode of Lead in 30, you'll discover how a lack of curiosity can impede collaboration, shrink networks, and stifle innovation. Drawing from my experiences with senior executive teams, I'll share stories and observations that illustrate the remarkable impact of curiosity on both personal and organizational growth.Listen to the tales of two striking in-flight encounters—an adrenaline-pumped base jumper and a focused Chick-fil-A franchise owner—that reveal the broader issue of a "kiss the ring" mentality. Despite their fascinating lives and careers, these individuals showed little interest in engaging deeply with others. These experiences underscore the critical importance of curiosity in leadership. As we head towards the historic Battle of Gettysburg, prepare for reflections and actionable insights that will help you cultivate curiosity and elevate your leadership effectiveness.--Get weekly leadership tips delivered to your email inbox:Subscribe to our leadership email newsletterhttps://www.leadin30.com/newsletterConnect with me on LinkedIn or to send me a DM:https://www.linkedin.com/in/russleads/Tap here to check out my first book, Decide to Lead, on Amazon. Is there a work ethic crisis today? The guys from the All In Podcast debate Comfort Culture vs Performance Culture after recent comments from the former Starbucks CEO and Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google. We unpack the implications of their contrasting views—one advocating for switching off after 6 pm and the other emphasizing the necessity of intense work for startups. In another compelling chapter, we navigate the enduring importance of in-person collaboration amid a wave of corporate returns to the office. Using case studies from Dell, Apple's campus designs by Steve Jobs, and Bell Labs, we highlight how spontaneous interactions and mentorship in physical workspaces can drive innovation and career growth. We also tackle the generational divide as younger employees lean towards remote work, potentially missing out on invaluable mentorship. Finally, we close with a balanced look at performance culture versus comfort culture, sharing personal experiences from our consulting careers to advocate for a hybrid work model that combines the best of both worlds.--Get weekly leadership tips delivered to your email inbox:Subscribe to our leadership email newsletterhttps://www.leadin30.com/newsletterConnect with me on LinkedIn or to send me a DM:https://www.linkedin.com/in/russleads/Tap here to check out my first book, Decide to Lead, on Amazon.
