fWotD Episode 2852: Overdrawn at the Memory Bank Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 24 February 2025 is Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is a 1984 science fiction television film starring Raul Julia and Linda Griffiths. Based on the 1976 John Varley short story of the same name from the Eight Worlds series, the film takes place in a dystopian future where an employee at a conglomerate gets trapped inside the company's computer and ends up affecting the real world. It was co-produced by Canada's RSL Films, Ltd in Toronto and New York television station WNET. Because of its limited budget, the motion picture was shot on videotape instead of film and was pre-sold to small American cable companies. It premiered on CBC Television in 1984 and was later broadcast on American Playhouse in 1985. The film had a mixed reception from critics. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank was featured in the eighth season finale episode of the comedy television series Mystery Science Theater 3000 in 1997.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:25 UTC on Monday, 24 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Overdrawn at the Memory Bank on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Raveena.

The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2021/08/binary-system-podcast-277-wtnv-191-the-many-many-lives-of-frank-chen/ We may have mentioned this before, but the Binary System Podcast team loves a good time-travel story. We especially enjoy it when the writers use the side-effects of time travel to really mess with longtime fans who know that none of what's happening is normal. (Sheriff Pamela Winchel? Michelle Nguyen is marrying Sara Sultan, the fist-sized river rock? Cecil likes Steve Carlsberg's scones?) After we recap the wibbly-wobbly, timey wimey story of poor doomed Frank Chen we move on to the weekly SitRep which is, well, the news of the world could honestly be a little better. (The sounds of sirens and the helicopter life-flights coming from the hospital near Elizabeth's apartment were particularly active this week which seems PRETTY DARN APPROPRIATE.) To distract ourselves from all of THAT, we discussed Lore Olympus for a little while, along with a bit of Penny Dreadful, a smidge of John Varley, and Kathryn's "meh" review of the space horror movie "High Life". The bulk of the episode was devoted to episodes 1-7 of Beastars Season 2, and if you're not caught up then you probably better skip from minute 19:00 to 35:54 because we spoil ALL THE THINGS. The outro music this week is a clip from Finally Free by Linn Friberg. Corrections: According to the transcript http://www.nightvalepresents.com/welcome-to-night-vale-transcripts/2021/8/1/191-the-many-many-lives-of-frank-chen for this week's Night Vale episode, Frank Chen traveled to Constantinople in the year 600, not 1600. He also traveled to the year 2121, not 2021. Hi, we're bad at time. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Want to buy them (or yourself) a square foot of a castle in Scotland? In this episode we review this timeless classic, talk about the real-life risk of meteors and comets hitting Earth, discuss how much it feels like nonfiction covering an event that just hasn't happened yet, and debate what makes a book ending great. As always, we also recommend and discuss some similar stories if you're looking for more great books to read. This week we recommend Titan by John Varley, Ringworld by Larry Niven, The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu, and The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson.YouTube link if you prefer to watch the episode.NO SPOILERS BOOK SUMMARY: Earth's asteroid collision warning system detects a new object in the deep solar system, on an orbit that will take past Earth and close to the sun. As it gets closer, it becomes clear it is a massive cylinder, and it's far too perfect to be natural object. An alien spaceship is heading deep into the solar system. There is only one human ship that can intercept the object before it whips around the sun, and we follow that crew as they arrive at the object and open its airlock door. Note that in this episode we talk about the ending of the book, starting at 19:30.

Welcome to episode 17 of Season 12 of The Coode Street Podcast. For those very few of you who might be wondering what Jonathan and Gary ramble on about when they're not recording or talking to guests, here's a taste—especially if you make it all the way to the last ten minutes or so, when we end up talking about our vaccination cards and possible travel plans.   Before we get there, however, we touch upon the new Lavie Tidhar novel The Hood, which we're both in the midst of reading and is due out in October. That leads to a broader discussion of Tidhar's work and an even broader discussion about how historical material is handled differently in fantasy from the way it is in SF, and whether the classic view of SF's manifest destiny even holds up anymore, given the variety of voices and perspectives now available. Some of the authors we touch upon are Arkady Martine, John Varley, C.J. Cherryh, Isaac Asimov (and the forthcoming Apple TV+ series derived from the Foundation series), Kelly Robson, John Varley, and a few others. A mixed bag, for sure.

You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. During their conversation, Mark and James discuss: His experience writing as a freelance investigative journalist within the diet and fitness industry for the LA Times and Chicago Tribune How James' literary agent compared his previous book The Holy Shit Moment as a combination of Malcolm Gladwell's Blink with Jen Sincero's You Are a Badass The way that The Holy Shit Moment was a book with a bit of a scientific analysis on "how shit works" and learning that you can't make those "holy shit" moments happen, but you can set up the groundwork for making it more likely to occur The way that the book The Holy Shit Moment flopped and what that meant for James' career despite all the media attention and support Being in a tough and tight headspace where he wasn't sure what was going to happen with his career, with a book flop, Trump looking like he was going to be re-elected, a Covid-19 pandemic lockdown The way that exercise can be an important part of paving the way for an epiphany moment The long bike-ride James was on that led to the idea for this new book and shift to his writing focus over to history The idea of the "this day in history" posts to share to Facebook How the 2nd post about May West "blew up" on social media (5 million views within a month) and prompted people to suggest he should convert these types of posts into a book The way James would decide on what to write for any specific day The more than 1000 variations of the word "Fuck" that appears in the On This Day in History Shit Went Down A future book that James has been working on called Greedy Sexist Religious Bigots Who Hate Science The move James made to Patreon with his daily history post content and his weariness about whether or not it would work. But how, within a few hours, he was already well into a few thousand dollars How, within 3 months, James was in the top 30 of all writers on Patreon Moving over to Substack and how they encourage people to provide content for free to create an audience, while also having some content behind a paywall The deep and meaningful connection that people can feel towards writers they respect and admire The generosity shown to sci-fi author John Varley via a health crisis and GoFundMe campaign How, even though people can read the entire content of the book for free, sales of On This Day In History Shit Went Down are exploding The print book significantly outpacing the eBook sales on this title despite doing no advertising or marketing outside of sharing free content from the book on social media The importance of a blatant and direct CALL TO ACTION to "get the book And more... After the interview Mark reflects on the change in writing focus James took as well as his fully embracing both traditional publishing and indie publishing options to fully leverage his IP to his greatest benefit, as well as his combination of nimble indie author marketing tactics combined with a progressive business-oriented approach. Mark then thanks Patrons of the podcast offering them one of two opportunities to win one of two free download codes for an awesome new writing bundle from Storybundle called "The Right Stuff Storybundle" (which is only available until May 25, 2021.   Links of Interest: James Fell's Website Body for Wife / Books On This Day in History Shit Went Down James Fell Facebook Page James Fell on Substack Episode 60 - The Holy Shit Moment and Other Sudden Insights with James Fell Episode 2 - Living the Healthy Writer Life with Joanna Penn Episode 138 - Cash Flow for Creators with Michael W Lucas Episode 148 - A Voice Double Conversation with Joanna Penn The Write Stuff Storybundle (Until May 25, 2021) Kevin Closs Music Patreon for Stark Reflections Wide for the Win Mark's Canadian Werewolf Books This Time Around (Short Story) A Canadian Werewolf in New York Stowe Away (Novella) Fear and Longing in Los Angeles Fright Nights, Big City   About James Fell My name is James and I say "fuck" a lot. Talks about direction of historical wargaming having young guys who were enamored of Nazi kind of stuff - fetishized it - and he thinks D&D saved the gaming hobby, by providing a setting in which people can roll play sketchy/evil people but not have it tied to offensive, real world, horrible evil like the nazis. question about all the dice rolling -- why? (talking about the random generation of worlds, people, and creatures). Marc says that using that kind of random generation helps "allow interesting things to happen". origin and creation of the Spinward Marches Beside Dumarest, Vang, what novels/series does he recommend and which were really super influential in the origin of the game. He says stuff by H. Beam Piper, Space Viking, Cosmic Computer, John Varley, Citizen of the Galaxy. I comment that I appreciate that he has always kept the bar high -- high standards. Traveller never goes low. Never incorporates creepy, sexist, gross-out, lowbrown stuff, and that from getting the boxed set when I was a kid the game was uplifting and "made me feel smart." He says many people have told him the game changed their lives, and he appreciates that. Later in the talk, with regard to potential movies/TV, he reiterates his desire not to allow lowbrow lowest-common-denominator stuff (My words, not his) to be associated with Traveller. Talks about Zhodani core expeditions a bit. That's all I got, folks. It was a 2 hour talk, and really fun. I got a chance to really look at the new hardback Book 1. I have the PDF, and I found the PDF overwhelming. Looking at the book in person, I found it easier to understand. This isn't an official review, but it this looks really good, seems well-organized. Looking at it as a toolkit makes a lot of sense. He mentions that it will be $100 for the whole set - compared to $150 for the 3 D&D 5e books, so its a bargain! Oh, the art is pretty good in the books. Mark mentioned that he prefers descriptive art in his books so you can see what things look like, as opposed to "atmospheric" art. The new book very much adheres to this. Christopher Rowley: Novels -- The Vang Series www.christopherrowley.net    Jeff's models!

This week's episode ranges from a discussion about the growing importance of novellas and their advantages both for readers and writers, the difficult question of which story you might pick to introduce a new reader to a favourite author, the importance of distinctive voices in both short fictions and novels, the upcoming 87th birthday of the great Gene Wolfe, and James Cameron's new TV documentary on SF, which features appearance from several SF writers and critics, including Gary. Then Jonathan springs on Gary the question of what his favourite book is, so Gary tossed it right back to Jonathan. We both came up with answers that date back to our respective childhoods. In addition to Gene Wolfe, some of the authors mentioned include R.A. Lafferty, Ted Chiang, Margo Lanagan, Kelly Link, Robert A. Heinlein, T.H. White, Sam J. Miller, Kate Wilhelm, Ursula Le Guin, Andy Duncan, Howard Waldrop, Catherynne Valente, Jeffrey Ford, Lavie Tidhar, John Varley, James Patrick Kelly, Alec Nevala-Lee, and Joseph Heller. In a recent interview with Locus, Hugo and Campbell Award-winning author Ian McDonald discussed his new hard SF novel, Luna: First Moon: ‘My next books are Luna parts one and two, a duology set on a moon base – Game of Domes. In the Luna books, I'm still writing about developing economies, it's just that this one happens to be on the moon, about 2089. It was basically Gary K. Wolfe who was responsible for it. On an ancient Coode Street podcast about invigorating stale subgenres in science fiction, he said he'd love to see a new take on the moonbase story. I don't know why, but I've always loved moon stories. John Varley did one, Steel Beach. I thought about it, and Enid, my partner, was watching TV, the new version of Dallas. It wasn't very good, but the old version was great. My book is Dallas on the moon, so it's got five big industrial family corps on the moon, called the five dragons, and it's about their intrigues and battles.” Given Coode Street's part in the history of Luna (see episode 72), we decided to invite Ian, a long-time friend of the podcast, back to discuss the new novel, his writing, and much more. As always, we'd like to thank Ian for making the time to be part of the podcast, and hope you enjoy the episode. More next week!
