Could the mental strategies of elite athletes revolutionise our performance, whether in the operating room, the boardroom, or the classroom? In this episode, psychologist Josephine Perry joins me to unravel the art of applying sports psychology across high-performance domains. With a background that zigs and zags through journalism, marketing, and even crisis communications, Josephine embodies the shift from non-athlete to an iron-willed triathlete, proving that the philosophies of sports psychology are not just for those on the track but for anyone chasing their peak potential.Facing a career crossroads can be daunting, especially for those steeped in the medical field, where the weight of expectation often nudges one down a preordained path. This episode explores the layers of this existential dilemma, offering a compassionate look at the internal struggle medics might face when their career no longer echoes their inner values. Together, we sift through the importance of decision-making guided by personal purpose and the courage it takes to steer away from years of study when it leads you astray from your true calling. Through real stories, Josephine shares her battles with a lethargic alter ego, dubbed "Lazy Larry," we explore how aligning our life's actions with our core values—like family and bravery—can not only quell the perfectionist's anxiety but also stoke the fires of motivation.Connect with Dr Josephine Perry:WebsiteLinkedInGet Josephine's book the 10 Pillars of SuccessConnect with Rolake Ojo:LinkedInInstagramWebsiteBrand New Dr. is produced and managed by Urban Podcasts.

In this episode, Holly and I are delving into the psychology of running and nutrition. We have a special guest with us for much of the episode, Josephine Perry, a sports psychologist who has genuinely blown our tiny minds. Josie got into sports psychology after doing an Ironman, while facing a scary ocean for the swim section. The tannoy shouted out to the assembled athletes: “You guys can't change those waves, but you can change the way you feel about them” and it switched her brain into gear, gave her a triathlon PB, and motivated a change in career. And it's lucky for us that she has. We have so many questions for Josie, and she talks to us here about how the brain is connected to our bodies, and she explains the part of the brain, the Amygdala, which is the bit that notifies us about threats. We talk about how this can affect us on the start line of races (a lot, it turns out). And we also talk about sports and exercise addiction, and the unhealthy attachment of sport and food. Holly and I both found this chat extremely revealing, and a little bit emotional if I'm honest. What Josie reveals about the dynamic between exercise, food, and historical unhelpful behaviours and thinking feels like a light switching on. What we need to be doing, it turns out, is discovering what our values are, and making sure we run for those things, rather than as a negative punishment. Sounds obvious – often isn't. This feels like a really illuminating and important podcast – I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Please take care here, there are some potentially triggering mentions of eating disorders and sporting addiction.LinksDo please email us at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk!Josie's book The Ten Pillars of SuccessYou can get your hands on your first issue of Women's Running for just £1! Master the 40: The Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald

We kick off season 2 of Master the 40 with our first foray into the series of "juveniles" Fitzgerald wrote for the Saturday Evening Post between 1928 and 1931. Actually, he wrote two coming-of-age series for the magazine, one about a boy (Basil Duke Lee) and one about a girl (Josephine Perry). The latter tend to be darker and sadder, while the former offer nostalgic glimpses of Fitzgerald's own adolescence in St. Paul in the 1910s. Chronologically, "He Thinks He's Wonderful" is the fourth of eight Basil stories and captures our hero smackdab in the middle of the awkward age. We explore Fitzgerald's treatment of American teenagers before they became rebels without a cause. On the one hand, the author's empathy for young people led him to depict the foibles of growing up with far more psychological realism than predecessors such as Booth Tarkington. At the same time, the Basil series eschews the "fall from innocence" vision of coming of age modernist contemporaries shared, which insisted that some kind of epiphany would mercilessly and irrevocably initiate young people into the hypocrisies and compromises of adulthood, forever denying them their prelapsarian naivete. In the end, Basil is no Holden Caulfield ... but he just may be a more honest depiction of adolescence, an intense but ultimately transitory stage of the life cycle. No matter how much American popular culture glamorizes the teen years, most of us are happy never to go back to that age!

Sports psychologist Dr Josephine Perry has some insight into what makes athletes tick, but wasn't prepared for what happened to her yesterday morning when she was doing laps at a swimming pool. A man she had overtaken pulled her under water by her feet and held her down, before shouting at her. When she shared the incident on social media her timeline filled up with women saying similar things had happened to them. “Purity Culture” is a term used in conservative households that attempts to promote a biblical view of purity by discouraging dating and promoting virginity before marriage. Chloe speaks to two young women – Chrissie and Kirtika – about their own experiences of growing up in households that promoted purity culture. On Thursday it'll be 100 years since the Plumage Act banned the importation of feathers for use in hat-making. At its peak in the late 1800s, the trade in plumage was placing over 60 bird species at risk of extinction. But then a group of women, led by Emily Williamson, started a 30-year campaign to ban feathers from fashion. Beccy Speight from the RSPB is hoping a series of campaigns will bring Emily Williamson's achievements back to life. Attitudes towards corporal punishment have shifted significantly in recent decades, such that smacking is now banned in 59 countries around the world. That includes Scotland, where a smacking ban came in last year, and a similar ban is due to come into force in Wales in 2022. New research out today from University College London suggests England should follow their lead. Presenter: Chloe Tilley Producer: Frankie Tobi
