My guest again this week is author Maya Cantu who returns for the third and final part of our conversation about her fascinating book: Greasepaint Puritan — Boston to 42nd Street in the Queer Backstage Novels of Bradford Ropes. In this episode we focus on Ropes' 1934 novel, Go Into Your Dance, the third in his evocative backstage trilogy which also includes 42nd Street (the source material for both the classic film and the stage musical), and Stage Mother, (a sort of proto version of Gypsy). All three of these novels were heavily inspired by Ropes' actual experiences as a dancer and performer on Broadway and in Vaudeville during the 1920s. To a great extent Go Into Your Dance is a roman á clef of the star dancer & legendary showman George White and his scandals, both professional and personal, including his long-standing relationship with Broadway star Ann Pennington, fictionalized by Ropes as "Ted Howard," who rises from messenger boy to dancer to one of the most powerful figures on Broadway, and his indispensable collaborator, "Nora Wayne." Ted Howard's series of "Town Talk" revues become major competition for "Lane's Frivolities" (Ziegfeld Follies), and along the way he interacts with figures from what Maya and I dub the "Bradford Ropes Literary Universe" such as producer/director, "Julian Marsh," dance director, "Andy Lee," and "the Wilson Brothers," a thinly disguised version of the Shuberts). Of perhaps greatest interest are the two gay chorus boys, Arthur and Bobby, who befriend Ted when he joins the chorus of Marsh's musical "Sweet Sally," and play a crucial role in the plot of this remarkable novel. Maya and I also discuss the major themes that tie these novels together, as well as her remarkable six-year journey in unearthing and re-discovering the life and work of Bradford Ropes. If you missed the first two episodes in this series you may want to catch up with those before listening to this one. May Cantu is a dramaturg and historian who teaches on the Drama Faculty of Bennington College and is also the author of American Cinderella on the Broadway Musical Stage: Imagining the Working Girl from “Irene” to “Gypsy”. This compilation celebrates iconic modern Gay Pride anthems and their importance to the LGBTQ+ community. The 2023 selection revitalizes legendary anthems from the past half-century, presenting them in an updated format for today's dancefloors. We bring you the most emblematic, compelling songs that echo the universal messages of love, unity, resilience, and defiance within our community. Kicking off this collection, we've selected the ever-resilient anthem, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. It's featured in an exquisite, previously unexplored version - Eric Kupper's House remix, offering a gentle start before escalating into high-energy beats. The list also highlights Whitney Houston's timeless hit, "I Will Always Love You" in a Julian Marsh remix, and Diana Ross' empowering track "I'm Coming Out," remixed by Barry Harris. Each song carries significant meaning for our community, often becoming soundtracks to personal stories of love, acceptance, and identity. Other standouts include Lizzo's "Everybody's Gay" and Miley Cyrus' "Flowers," showing the continual evolution of queer music. Toni Braxton's heart-wrenching "Un-Break My Heart" and CeCe Peniston's classic "Finally," both in revamped remixes, add to the rich tapestry of our anthems. To ensure these powerful messages resonate with listeners, we've chosen remixes that retain the essence of each anthem while injecting a modern energy, making these tunes relatable to the current LGBTQ+ generation. The curation of these modern Gay Pride anthems of 2023 was a challenging task due to the abundance of choices, but we are confident we've selected the most impactful tracks that resonate globally. Our goal was to craft a collection that honors the past while embracing the future, mirroring the continual progress within our community. So, turn up the volume, let the music inspire you, and remember: these songs aren't just anthems; they're a testament to our journey, resilience, and pride. Stay tuned for the release of volume 2 of the 2023 Gay Anthems For A New Generation collection, filled with more modern Gay Pride anthems to soundtrack your celebrations. Mary and Steven are back! And they have some director notes Julian Marsh himself would have had an over the top fit over in this week's episode of From The Top! Show Notes for 42nd Street. Steven nitpicks the details of production life and how it's portrayed in all the shows variations, while Mary brings comedic relief showing just how this show holds a mirror up to show life in all it's crazy. Then they hold their own heated audition process with a QuikCast, and of course, enter their magical land called "What If" and flip this show on its head. So get ready to sweat, laugh, and bring the heat as our dynamic duo return to the show. Happy Listening! FOLLOW US! For only the second time in my career, I'm doing back to back shows at the same theater. First there was Anne of Green Gables this past summer and now there's 42nd Street here at the Goodspeed Opera House. It's a show I've done before a few years back and in the same role as well, only this time there's a lead producer who's working to bring this production (and hopefully its cast) to Broadway. It has Carina-Kay Louchiey as the young starlet Peggy Sawyer and Max von Essen as the hard-nosed director Julian Marsh. I'm in the role of Pat Denning, playing opposite one of my favorite leading ladies of Broadway... Kate Baldwin, who plays the veteran actress Dorothy Brock, joins the podcast to talk about this current production of 42nd Street and why it means so much to the both us. Then we take a surprisingly candid and unvarnished look at her career and why she was told she'd probably never have one in theater. We also discuss the ways we performers often compare ourselves to others and how to handle those times when someone else books the show instead of us. And it was back in 2017 that MAESTRA MUSIC was formed by this composer/lyricist and music director to give support, visibility, and community to the women who make the music in the musical theater industry. Their membership is made up of female-identifying, non-binary, and gender non-conforming composers, music directors, orchestrators, arrangers, copyists, rehearsal pianists and other musicians who are an underrepresented minority in musical theater. It was back in Season 4 that Stitt came on this podcast to talk about her career and this wonderful organization. FINAL FIVE QUESTIONS WITH KATE BALDWIN In addition to our main conversation, Kate answered the five final questions on topics that we only briefly touched on in this episode. She shares her definition of "making it" as well as what annoyed her most about some singers (riffing). She also discusses music directors, her early days in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and the importance of going where you are loved. Read it all on the WINMI Blog. Follow Kate: Website | LinkedIn
Two weeks ago we started preview performances for 42nd Street here at Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. I've been so grateful to continue on at this theater after the successful run of the Anne of Green Gables musical. And so far audiences have been loving 42nd Street and the plethora of talented tap dancers on the stage. During these previews we have continued to rehearse and make the show the best can be, not to mention understudy rehearsals as well (I'm covering the role of Julian Marsh). And I even had to go back to New York City for an in-person audition (though I didn't get a callback), all the while coming down with an actual cold, though not Covid thankfully. So I come to you today asking for a bit of patience and understanding at the lack of a new episode this week. certainly one reason why I'll never make it is my own inconsistent time management. Sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day, and then sometimes there isn't enough productivity in those hours. But as with everything I continue to grow and learn and am thankful for listeners like you who are on that same journey with me. There are some great guests coming up like singer songwriter Elaine Romanelli, dancer and actor Ricky Schroder, as well as lyricist and playwright Joe DiPietro from Broadway's Memphis and Diana the Musical. So enjoy your week and I'll be back next Monday with a brand new episode of Why I'll Never Make It. Check out past episodes on your podcast app or at whyillnevermakeit.com.
Russ doesn't live in the Springfield area anymore, but he was a mainstay on the Muni stage during much of the 1980s. He made his Muni debut as James in Shenandoah in 1979. Later that summer he played Billy Bigelow in Carousel. David Robert Jones (8 January 1947—10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie, is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Fueled by a range of musical styles, Bowie often projected a variety of personalities depending on which project he was working on and where his musical interests lay at the moment. From Glam Rock, to Disco and everything in between — he achieved massive success with his art that affected millions of lives with each evolving iteration. Since his death in 2016, Party Favorz has received many requests to create a Legacy set featuring his work. Given the substantial output and variety of his catalog that literally goes back to 1969 — it was near impossible to do any justice to the legacy Bowie has left us — until now. There's no doubt he would have gravitated toward the current electronic movement and even began remixing his work in the early 90s. That being said, with a variety of music styles and the ability to capture the true magic of his work — it is near impossible to recreate. Nevertheless, I persisted and pulled off something special for hardcore fans (such as myself) that at the very least extracts multiple highlights of his career even if it's not all-encompassing. Frankly, a good portion of his catalog would be near impossible to translate to the dance floor. I have to admit, the Julian Marsh remix of "Space Oddity" and 7th Heaven remix of "Rebel Rebel" are spectacularly executed, as well as several others. I cannot deny the emotions that overwhelm me when I listen to his music as it brings back a flood of memories — some good, while others, not so much. It just proves that Bowie's music will stand the test of time. It is with much love and respect that Party Favorz honors David Bowie with his own tribute to dance music. Some may consider this tribute blasphemy but there's no doubt this would have been his next act. RIP Ziggy. RIP Ziggy. Doris Day - Heaven Tonight (Julian Marsh Remix) In honor of the passing of a truly great actress and signer I admired all of my life I would like you to hear a remix I was honored to have done in 2011.
Doris Day - Everybody Loves A Lover (Julian Marsh Mambo Mix). In 2011, when I was asked to remix Heaven Tonight for Doris Day, her record company offered me any song from her catalog to remix. I chose Everybody Loves A Lover and gave it a Mambo styling.
If you know me, then you know that I prefer my music happy and uplifting. I gotta say, this is some seriously happy stuff (at 134 bpm and higher). Uplifting, melodic vocals... the kind of trance you'd cry over (depending on your state of mind LOL). These tracks take me back to the late 90s / early 00s when I would play music for (and with) my San Francisco family. So not only is this mix for Roy, but it is also for my brother, Gregory Cox Byfield. I have to credit the blending of the two Red 5 remixes to super-dj Julian Marsh, who brilliantly did it over 20 years ago... and I still think it's amazing. Tracklist: 1) Can't Live A Day (Tiesto) / Avalon 2) You're Beautiful (Original) / Madagascar 3) Seven Cities (Armin van Buuren Vocal) / Solarstone 4) Outlaw (Space Brothers) / Olive 5) Club For Life '98 (Solar Power) / Chris & James 6) Toca Me (Club) / Fragma 7) Everytime (Mike Koglin) / Lustral 8) Honey (Chicane Club) / Billie Ray Martin 9) Lift Me Up (Striking Man & THK Club) / Red 5
