We discuss the importance of shoulder strength and mobility for swimming and touch on the nuances of swimming technique, the differences between open water and pool swimming, and how strength training and mobility work hand in hand. Emphasizing simplicity, we highlight how gym workouts and other activities can enhance these physical attributes, ultimately benefiting athletes in their swimming and cycling endeavors. We explore the importance of simplifying swimming coaching techniques to focus on key aspects of an athlete's performance. We examine how individual swimmer's capabilities determine their stroke style and how this links to their gym routines, emphasizing the need for tailored mobility and strength exercises. We discuss the common mistake of overcomplicating training with trendy, complex exercises seen on social media, and the value of basic, yet essential, exercises like the shoulder external rotation. Additionally, we touch on the significance of shoulder girdle strength and stability, particularly on the posterior side, for achieving a long and effective stroke reach. We also discuss the anatomy of the shoulder joint, highlighting its unique structure and the role of rotator cuff muscles in maintaining stability without sacrificing mobility. We focus on the importance of strengthening and stabilizing the scapula and rotator cuff for overall shoulder health, particularly for athletes. We discuss the benefits of exercises like bent-over rows and scapula push-ups for building muscles such as the rhomboids and the serratus anterior, which are crucial for stabilizing the scapula. We emphasize the necessity of balancing rotator cuff work with exercises that target the muscles around the scapula, advocating for a 50/50 approach in workout programs. Additionally, we touch on the role of mobility in sports like swimming and cycling, highlighting how mobility affects performance aspects like reach, rotation, and breathing coordination. To improve mobility, Kate recommends dynamic movements over static stretches, as these can enhance muscle fascicle length whilst also building strength, tailored to the individual needs of the athlete. Lastly, we focus on the concept of reciprocal inhibition and its role in enhancing mobility and strength, particularly in swimmers and triathletes. We explore strengthening exercises that can improve the coordination between agonist and antagonist muscles, allowing for a full range of motion and mitigating tightness. Kate shares specific workouts like the lat hang, scapula hang, and movements that target the rhomboids and lats, providing not only strength but also mobility benefits. We discuss the importance of core engagement and proper form to maximize the effectiveness of these exercises. The conversation also touches on the common issue of shoulder tightness due to prolonged positions in sports, such as the TT position in cycling, and how certain exercises, like the overhead dowel movement, can counteract this by opening up the chest and simultaneously strengthening the shoulders and core. Kate offers practical tips on maintaining correct posture and avoiding excessive strain during these exercises. LINKS: Dr Kate Baldwin of Valere Endurance at https://valereendurance.com/

Mikki and Bev discuss the importance of pre-sleep protein intake for athletes. They explain how consuming protein before bed can help athletes meet their daily protein and caloric goals, which can be challenging due to busy schedules and time-consuming training. Pre-sleep protein, particularly casein, is beneficial as it is a slow-digesting protein that releases amino acids into the bloodstream over an extended period, providing a steady supply to the muscles throughout the night. This can aid in muscle protein synthesis and recovery. A recent study also showed that pre-sleep protein consumption increases both mitochondrial and myofibrillar protein synthesis rates during overnight recovery from endurance exercise. Welcome to Season 7! One of the joys that can come from being an actor, besides getting to perform on stage, and feeling the energy of a live audience, is that of working with other wonderful actors and collaborating on stage as well as building friendships off stage. Throughout the past six seasons, I've had the pleasure of bringing on some of these wonderful castmates, and not only share with you their stories, but I to get to learn a little more about them as well. This past year I was cast in my second production of 42nd Street, this time at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. You heard from Kate Baldwin last season, and so for this first episode of the season, I wanted to bring on another wonderful performer from that production.  Blake Stadnik is probably most well known for his role as Jack Damon in NBC's This Is Us, but he's actually been performing since his childhood thanks to his mother, who introduced him to dancing and performing after he lost the majority of his eyesight due to Stargardt's Disease. He went on, though, to get his BFA in musical theater from Penn State University. In our conversation, Blake will talk more about this disease and how it's impacted his life on and off stage. We'll also discuss the responsibilities of being an actor, and how Blake has had to remind himself at times why he is a performer. Lastly, he shares the tragic events that led to his father's passing, the impact of that loss, and the ways in which he carries on his father's legacy. Timeline of this episode's conversation: 03:12 - Blake and Patrick discuss 42nd Street at Goodpseed  06:54 - How Blake dances with Stargardt's Disease 13:53 - Story #1: Not getting cast because of his disability 19:47 - The limits others place on Blake vs. those he places on himself 33:11 - Story #2: Blake's internal struggle with selfishness for being an actor  38:55 - Story #3: Losing his father just as he was about to start This Is Us 49:23 - Missing his father and carrying on his legacy     Subscribe to WINMI If you wanna listen to our full conversation (with Audition Stories and the Final Five questions) as well as get episodes a week early from now on, then become a monthly or yearly subscriber to Why I'll Never Make It. For only the second time in my career, I'm doing back to back shows at the same theater. First there was Anne of Green Gables this past summer and now there's 42nd Street here at the Goodspeed Opera House. It's a show I've done before a few years back and in the same role as well, only this time there's a lead producer who's working to bring this production (and hopefully its cast) to Broadway. It has Carina-Kay Louchiey as the young starlet Peggy Sawyer and Max von Essen as the hard-nosed director Julian Marsh. I'm in the role of Pat Denning, playing opposite one of my favorite leading ladies of Broadway... Kate Baldwin, who plays the veteran actress Dorothy Brock, joins the podcast to talk about this current production of 42nd Street and why it means so much to the both us. Then we take a surprisingly candid and unvarnished look at her career and why she was told she'd probably never have one in theater. We also discuss the ways we performers often compare ourselves to others and how to handle those times when someone else books the show instead of us. Learn more about WINMI Podcast at whyillnevermakeit.com  Subscribe to WINMI and get Bonus Episodes on Supercast  Donate to the making this podcast and its production efforts   MAESTRA, founded by Georgia Stitt As Kate mentions in this episode, she and Georgia Stitt have worked together for years. And it was back in 2017 that MAESTRA MUSIC was formed by this composer/lyricist and music director to give support, visibility, and community to the women who make the music in the musical theater industry. Their membership is made up of female-identifying, non-binary, and gender non-conforming composers, music directors, orchestrators, arrangers, copyists, rehearsal pianists and other musicians who are an underrepresented minority in musical theater. It was back in Season 4 that Stitt came on this podcast to talk about her career and this wonderful organization.   FINAL FIVE QUESTIONS WITH KATE BALDWIN In addition to our main conversation, Kate answered the five final questions on topics that we only briefly touched on in this episode. She shares her definition of "making it" as well as what annoyed her most about some singers (riffing). She also discusses music directors, her early days in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and the importance of going where you are loved. Read it all on the WINMI Blog. Follow Kate: Website | LinkedIn

Estrenado en Broadway por Carol Channing en 1964, ha conocido muchas versiones a ambos lados del Atlántico e incluso se llevó al cine en 1969 dirigido por Gene Kelly con Barbra Streisand de protagonista. In anticipation of their (wildly successful) community concert, we invited some of the brilliant women behind Maestra, an organization that supports women in musical theater, to speak with us on Clubhouse. Founder Georgia Stitt, Tony nominated actress Kate Baldwin and film producer Laura Ivey helped open our eyes to the inequality that still exists for women in theater and then Joe and Jess discussed the work that still need to be done in our own companies. Get into Clubhouse and our club in one quick click: http://bit.ly/BroadwayUnlockedCH Join in on the conversation with #TechTheatreCH on Twitter, and join our weekly show at 12:55 Eastern on Clubhouse! Want to guest moderate a conversation with us? Pitch us your ideas here: https://www.broadwayunlocked.com/ch Why have just one conversation when you could have conversations around conversations about conversations? We were thinking the exact same thing- crazy! #TechTheatre: Clubhouse Conversations is a podcast to continue that conver-ception. Every week on Clubhouse (12:55 Eastern- come join us!) we have amazing conversations with amazing people at the intersection of technology and theatre. We always walk away with thoughts about them, and decided to share those out and reach even more of our friends and collaborators! Broadway Unlocked co-founders Jessica Ryan and Joe White discuss the discussions with their unique points of view coming from theatre and tech startups respectively- a co-hostship created in our nerdy tech-theatre dreams!

Broadway star Kate Baldwin joins host Robin Milling for Let's Do Lunch! at Village Prime in New York City. On stage at 59 E. 59, Kate gets her honky tonk on as Tammy Trip, a former Nashville Grand Ole Opry queen in Songbird; music and lyrics by Lauren Pritchard. She tells Robin she has never been to Music City but studied Robert Atlman's film 'Nashville' to prepare for the role and read up on famous female country artists like Wynona Judd and being a woman in the world of country music. She reveals her ultimate inspiration for the character looking sinewy and fit was inspired by a pop star. Her country twang came from listening to a playlist of several country singers, and one in particular became her model. At Village Prime, the fresh baked bread on the table was tempting, but Kate abstained as she is keeping her strict carb-free diet that she began with her husband; fellow actor, Graham Rowat, who also got in shape to play a gladiator in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. A foodie herself, she jokes that they may look great but they're 'exhausted and starving!' She tells Robin how they met during a run of 1776 at the Fords Theater in Washington, D.C. playing Richard Henry Lee and Martha Jefferson. Kate says their four and a half year-old son Colin is an equalizer between career and motherhood. Kate tells Robin her Broadway debut was as a swing in The Full Monty, and then as a dancer in the ensemble of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Learning the line dance in Songbird was plenty for Kate who jokes that she is a 'recovering dancer.' The menu at Village Prime consisted of Pumpkin Bisque soup, Roasted Salmon with Hudson Valley spaghetti squash and artichoke puree, Vegetable Flatbread with grilled seasonal veggies and mozzarella cheese, and Tuna Nicoise with bonito tuna, hard-boiled egg, haricot vert, potato over mixed greens.

As promised in our first episode, George Schlichter joins us today! Friends since college - Gary, Roscoe and George share memories and a few laughs in this lucky Episode 13. They went to Illinois Wesleyan, Gary and Roscoe majoring in theatre and George in English. George talks about his college stage debut in Waiting for Godot. They have all been roommates at various times and have tales to tell. George and Roscoe were sharing an apartment in Chicago in 1993 when Roscoe made a brief but successful return to the stage. A highlight was his role in Bailiwick Repertory's Don Juan on Halsted. Tony Adler's review suggested that Roscoe's character "deserved a sequel all to herself." (read more here) Roscoe describes having found the unexpected ability to move like Margot Fonteyn in 5-inch heels. His rave reviews for this and other roles during his comeback were very exciting. He remembers George calling him, "the toast of two continents." Roscoe gives an update on his circus training. We got the Actor's Gymnasium's fall class brochure and Roscoe wants to take Contortion. George is not sure Roscoe has conditioned properly for such an undertaking. They talk about the shocking August 6 GOP debate, featuring 10 of the 19 primary candidates in prime time. George thinks Ted Cruz looks like Joe McCarthy. Listen to hear who he think Trump resembles. All very disturbing. Roscoe makes a prediction about who will be the Republican nominee. Cultural Updates: Gary has been to see Writer's Theatre's great producion of  Doubt, set in the Glencoe Union Church. Our friend Geoff Barr, who works at Writer's, gave us a tour of the outside of the new theatre under construction, scheduled to open in March. Looks like it's going to be gorgeous. We can't wait for the new season. They are doing Company! HMS Media invited us to a live taping of a Kander & Ebb revue for a national PBS broadcast in February. The song selection was a little bizarre; we're guessing "lesser known" Kander & Ebb. Still the performances were fantastic, especially from 2015 Tony award nominee, Kate Baldwin! This event was the setting for a hilarious encroachment incident involving a 5-year old in our row. Which leads us to other dismaying displays of complete lack of theatre etiquette. George tells us that people are texting even in church! Kiss of Death:   Blaze Starr: Icon of Burlesque read her fascinating obit The film Blaze, starring Lolita Davidovitch and Paul Newman, was based on her memoir.
