Archive on 4 is available on BBC Sounds featuring previously unheard tapes of Kenneth Williams reading Bible stories. They were recorded by a young James Jones, now the retired Bishop of Liverpool when he was a young producer working for a Christian charity, charged with getting new recordings that would bring new audiences to Christianity. The tapes explore Williams's talent in bringing these well-known stories to life and 'open a window into his soul', exploring his own relationship with faith through the people who knew him. Edward Stourton discusses Kenneth Williams' faith with Mark Oakley who is the dean of Southwark Cathedral, and James Jones, the former bishop of Liverpool. Also on the programme; the founder of the first secure school for young offenders with a faith ethos, says the spiritual health of teenagers needs addressing. Steve Chalke says schools in his Oasis group use an holistic approach to address bad behaviour. According to a new Teacher Tapp survey commissioned by the BBC, more than a third of secondary school teachers say they've seen misogynistic behaviour from a pupil in their school in the last week. But while Steve Chalke argues that a faith ethos in a school can help, are some religious beliefs part of the problem? As Israel continues its bombardment of Gaza, six UN aid agencies have this week appealed for a ceasefire and the resumption of urgently needed aid deliveries. We hear from Muslim Aid, which has worked with aid workers in the strip for the last 19 years. Meanwhile Jewish people around the world are celebrating the start of Passover – but in Israel some of the hostages who've been released say it's hard to celebrate this festival of freedom when 59 hostages are still in captivity. Did you know that the earliest extant letter written in New Persian was composed by a Jewish individual? In other words, any scholar engaged in Iranian studies who intends to explore the New Persian language must not overlook this document. By "New Persian," we refer to a language distinct from both Middle Persian and Old Persian. While it is not feasible to assign a precise chronological demarcation to these linguistic transitions, it is generally understood that Old Persian pertains to the Achaemenid period, whereas Middle Persian corresponds to the era following the Arab invasions. In 1901 CE, a British-Jewish archaeologist by the name of Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862–1943), during his excavations in one of the most remote regions of Greater Iran at the time—specifically, a site known as Dandan Uiliq, situated in eastern Turkestan near Khotan—unearthed a letter that has since been a subject of extensive scholarly examination by Iranologists. The letter, consisting of thirty-seven lines, was inscribed on sheepskin in a script referred to as "Judeo-Persian" (Farsihud), using the Hebrew script but written in the Persian language. Owing to the passage of time and natural deterioration, portions of the letter have sustained damage. Initial research suggests that this letter, which is devoid of foreign loanwords or expressions, was likely composed in the mid-8th century. The content pertains to commercial transactions, possibly involving the trade of sheep. In this conversation with Rabbi Moshe (Peyam) Shirazi on the Persian-speaking television programme Derakhte Zendegi (The Tree of Life), we shall explore the subject of Judeo-Persian (Farsihud) in greater depth.

Recently the kids and I watched the film 'A house in Jerusalem' by filmmaker Muayad Elayyan who happens to be a far cousin and friend of my husband Tariq. Although he told me that he had a small role as an extra in this film, which he's had in all Muayad's films, I did NOT recognize him. Turns out the policeman in the scene when Rebecca wanders off from the summer school activity in Jerusalem and ends up with the Palestinian puppeteer, is MY husband!! We only realized at the end of the film when we saw his name in the end credits, that we had missed out on recognizing him. It was a hilarious moment when we played it again and then figured out the policeman was Tariq!Muayad visits Singer Cafe regularly so it wasn't hard to catch him for a podcast interview. After his earlier films: 'The reports on Sarah and Saleem' and 'Love Theft and Other Entanglements' this film 'A House in Jerusalem' is the latest. It came out in January 2023 and it is still being shown at film festivals around the world. In this film a British Jewish girl named Rebecca comes with her father to Jerusalem after her mother has died in a tragic car accident. Her grandfather has a house in West Jerusalem where they can live. They are both overwhelmed with the trauma of losing the mother, but the father is trying to make things work in their new environment. Rebecca explores the garden, finds an old well, manages to open it and finds a traditional rag doll in the well. This leads her to connect with the ghost of the young Palestinian girl Rasha. What follows is the story of what happened to this girl Rasha during the 1948 Nakba when the family was forcibly displaced from their home.In the podcast interview with Muayad we touch on many aspects of the film and on Muayad's personal family history. His both grandparents were displaced from their homes. The theme of intergenerational trauma both on an individual level as well as on the collective level are very present in the film.Muayad could never have imagined that his film would come out just months before the 7th of October and before the ethnic cleansing campaign in the Gaza strip. "There are many parallels to what happened in 1948 and what is happening in Gaza."If you want to follow up with news of screenings of the film then this is the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ahouseinjerusalem Connect to Stories from Palestine on social media, sign up for the newsletter, read more about traveling to Palestine and if you can, please support the podcast on Ko-fi. Toby Lloyd didn't grow up religious. But the British Jewish author became fascinated with Orthodoxy—how different people, even in the same family, can interpret biblical texts as either literal or metaphorical. Wanting to tap into the meaning and effects of people's belief systems, as well as reinterpreting stories from the Torah and wrapping it in the guise of horror, Lloyd wrote his debut novel, Fervour, out March 19. The story blends difficult family dynamics, a critique of religion and intergenerational Holocaust trauma, when a patriarchal grandfather survivor dies, sparking his adult children to suspect their own daughter of falling deep into Jewish mysticism and becoming a witch. To explain how and why he wrote the book, Lloyd joins Ralph Benmergui on Not That Kind of Rabbi for a conversation about writing and the role of religion in modern British Jewry. Credits Not That Kind of Rabbi is hosted by Ralph Benmergui and produced by Michael Fraiman. We're a member of The CJN Podcast Network. (Bonus) The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British Government in 1917 during the First World War announcing its support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine, then an Ottoman region with a small minority Jewish population. The declaration was contained in a letter dated 2 November 1917 from the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. The text of the declaration was published in the press on 9 November 1917. Immediately following their declaration of war on the Ottoman Empire in November 1914, the British War Cabinet began to consider the future of Palestine; within two months a memorandum was circulated to the Cabinet by a Zionist Cabinet member, Herbert Samuel, proposing the support of Zionist ambitions in order to enlist the support of Jews in the wider war. A committee was established in April 1915 by British Prime Minister H. H. Asquith to determine their policy towards the Ottoman Empire including Palestine. Asquith, who had favoured post-war reform of the Ottoman Empire, resigned in December 1916; his replacement David Lloyd George favoured partition of the Empire. The first negotiations between the British and the Zionists took place at a conference on 7 February 1917 that included Sir Mark Sykes and the Zionist leadership. Subsequent discussions led to Balfour's request, on 19 June, that Rothschild and Chaim Weizmann submit a draft of a public declaration. Further drafts were discussed by the British Cabinet during September and October, with input from Zionist and anti-Zionist Jews but with no representation from the local population in Palestine.

In this edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts Ben M. Freeman, author, educator, and founder of the modern Jewish Pride movement.Born in Scotland, Freeman rose to prominence during the Corbyn Labour Jew-hate crisis and quickly became one of his generation's leading voices against anti-Jewish racism. In February of 2021, he published Jewish Pride: Rebuilding a People, which became known as the Jewish Pride manifesto. In October of 2022, he followed that book up with Reclaiming Our Story: The Pursuit of Jewish Pride, the second in what will become a groundbreaking trilogy when he publishes his finale in 2024.Freeman's journey to Jewish Pride marries two distinct identities and experiences. For a long time, his identity as a gay man and his Jewish identity were, as he puts it "totally separate." While he was raised in a vibrant, tight-knit, strongly Zionist Jewish community in Glasgow and proudly served that community for five years, the 36-year-old Freeman was born in 1987, at the height of the AIDS pandemic."That really clouded society's perception of what it meant to be gay, and I absorbed that, and I internalized it," Freeman tells Rabbi Yoshi. "I felt a huge amount of shame, and had to do a huge amount of work to undo all of that."[RELATED: Wise Members Share Their Story at Pride Shabbat]It wasn't until 2018, when the Jewish community of Britain united to oppose Labour Party MP Jeremy Corbyn's possible ascendance to the office of British Prime Minister, that the connection between Freeman's two identities crystalized. Working at the Hong Kong Holocaust Center, Freeman was somewhat on the sidelines as a firestorm erupted around Corbyn's history of antisemitic behavior, his defense of those espousing antisemitic conspiracy theories, and the increasingly antisemitic attitudes of the party he led. He took to social media with the aim to educate, approaching the situation from with his background as a Holocaust educator. While he was inspired by the united response from the British Jewish community, he noted the difficulty many high-profile, left-leaning Jews had with calling out the clearly racist and antisemitic tropes present in Corbyn's anti-Israel rhetoric."I believe they were so married to their identities as leftists," Freeman says. "That just got me reflecting on my experience with gay pride, how it changed my life, and I thought, 'This is unacceptable. We need a pride movement. We deserve a pride movement,' and I started talking a bit online. I made a video with some friends, being like, 'This is why I'm proud [to be Jewish]; why are you proud?' and it went a little bit viral."Freeman emerged as a thought-leader on Jewish education, history, and identity, and his trilogy of books is informed as much by that as it is his own experiences with LGBTQ+ pride as a gay man. With his trilogy, Freeman aims to educate, inspire, and empower Jewish people to reject the shame of antisemitism imposed on Jews by the non-Jewish world, as well as non-Jewish perceptions of what it means to be a Jew.

The Elizabethan Age draws to a close. Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest serving monarch passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire on Thursday 8th September 2022 after 70 years on the throne. Her loss is indescribable and her passing has sparked the most extraordinary outpouring of grief from across the world. But what did she mean to her Jewish subjects? Will the nation's temperature change? Is the end of the Elizabethan age a symbol of the end of the post World War II settlement? Will King Charles live upto his role? And where does Israel fit into it? As the nation comes to terms with the loss of the Queen, Jonny Gould covers the whirlwind of constitutional events and political change. The episode also includes audio tributes from the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Lord Stuart Polak, Lord David Wolfson, the Right Hon. Grant Shapps and international royal correspondent, Jonathan Sacerdoti. I also have a lovely anecdote from Israeli President, Isaac Herzog. I'm not ashamed to ask for your help. Michele K. Troy is professor of English at Hillyer College at the University of Hartford. She studies Anglo-American literary modernism in continental Europe and is the author of Strange Bird: The Albatross Press and the Third Reich, the first book to be written about the Albatross Press, a Penguin precursor, that entered into an uneasy relationship with the Nazi regime to keep Anglo-American literature alive under fascism. The press was, from its beginnings in 1932, a “strange bird”: a cultural outsider to the Third Reich but an economic insider. It was funded by British-Jewish interests. Its director was rumored to work for British intelligence. It distributed fiction in English by both mainstream and edgier modernist authors such as D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway to eager continental readers. Yet Albatross printed and sold its paperbacks from the heart of Hitler's Reich. Michele and I talk about how weird this is, among other things.

Few literary characters have loomed as large and felt as "real" as Shakespeare's Shylock. Though, as early 20th-century British Jewish historian Cecil Roth reminds us, he is a "sheer figment of Shakespeare's imagination." Or was he? Louis Jacobs was Britain's most gifted Jewish scholar. A Talmudic genius, outstanding teacher and accomplished author, cultured and easy-going, he was widely expected to become Britain's next Chief Rabbi. Then controversy struck. The Chief Rabbi refused to appoint him as Principal of Jews' College, the country's premier rabbinic college. He further forbade him from returning as rabbi to his former synagogue. All because of a book Jacobs had written some years earlier, challenging from a rational perspective the traditional belief in the origins of the Torah, the Jewish Bible. The British Jewish community was torn apart. It was a scandal unlike anything they had ever previously endured. The national media loved it. Jacobs became a cause celebre, a beacon of reason, a humble man who wouldn't be compromised. His congregation resigned en masse and created a new synagogue for him in Abbey Road, the heart of fashionable 1970s London. It became the go-to venue for Jews seeking reasonable answers to questions of faith. A prolific author of over 50 books and hundreds of articles on every aspect of Judaism, from the basics of religious belief to the complexities of mysticism and law, Louis Jacobs won the heart and affection of the mainstream British Jewish community. When the Jewish Chronicle ran a poll to discover the Greatest British Jew, Jacobs won hands down. He said it made him feel daft. In Reason To Believe: The Controversial Life of Rabbi Louis Jacobs (Bloomsbury Continuum, 2021), Harry Freedman tells the dramatic and touching story of Louis Jacobs's life, and of the human drama lived out by his family, deeply wounded by his rejection. He writes regularly for Tricycle, The New York Times, and other publications, and his most recent book is One Blade of Grass: Finding the Old Road of the Heart, a Zen Memoir.LINKS FROM THIS EPISODE One Blade of Grass: Finding the Old Road of the Heart, a Zen Memoir by Henry Shukman More Books by Henry Shukman Mountain Cloud Zen Center Waking Up with Sam Harris App Transcendental Meditation San Francisco Zen Center Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) Symptoms and Causes | Mayo Clinic The Beatles and the Transcendental Meditation: In Their Own Words | Transcendental Meditation Deepak Chopra | Twitter University of Oxford Why Now is Bliss | The Age David Wants To Fly | Prime Video 5 Types of Meditation Decoded | Chopra.com Vatican Inc.: 5 Facts About the Business of the Catholic Church | CNN Money History of Zen Buddhism | International Zen Association Japanese Zen Buddhist Philosophy | Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy The Difference Between Rinzai and Soto Zen | Sanpai Japan Sanbo Kyodan | Wikipedia Sanbo-Zen What Is a Koan? | New World Encyclopedia What an Ayahuasca Retreat Showed Me about My Life | Vox David Eagleman: Can We Create New Senses for Humans? | TED Talk Thich Nhat Hanh: The Fullness of Emptiness | Lion's Roar The Buddhist Concept of Emptiness (Sunyata) | Buddhist Sympathizer Buddha: How to Tame Your Monkey Mind | HuffPost What Is a Flow State and What Are Its Benefits? | Headspace Nihilism | Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy How to Meditate: The Buddhist Guide | Lion's Roar Intro to Meditation Talk 1 with Henry Shukman: Fundamentals of Why We Sit | Mountain Cloud Zen Center After the Ecstasy, the Laundry: How the Heart Grows Wise on the Spiritual Path by Jack Kornfield Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) | CDC How Two Weeks of Protests Have Changed America | Vox The Coronavirus Pandemic's Impact On Pollution And Climate Change | NBC News Racial Trauma Is a Public Health Emergency | Psychology Today My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem Comparing Democratic Distress in the United States and Europe | Carnegie Endowment for International Peace The Bodhisattva Ideal | Dharmanet Fact-Checking the Portland Protests: How Violent Are They? | The New York Times How to Practice Zen Koans | Lion's Roar 61 Zen Koans with Commentary by Clark Strand | Tricycle Four Myths About Zen Buddhism's "Mu Koan" | OUPblog The Gateless Gate | Wikisource Zen: The Authentic Gate by Yamada KounSHOW NOTES How we each began the journey toward practicing meditation. From 1940 to 1945 the Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to fall under Nazi occupation. German anti-Jewish decrees became part of the Islands’ legal structures. Local police and government officials identified and registered the few remaining Jews. Jewish property was Aryanized and Jews were deported, all with the knowing involvement of government officials who remained officially loyal to the British Crown. This lecture examines both the legal and moral failures and the ambiguities which surrounded this little known part of British Jewish history. (This paper was given on 7 March 2013 at the German Historical Institute London as part of the European Leo Baeck Lecture Series London, 2013.)

This Friday November 2nd is the 90th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. This is David Billington with the November 1st edition of the Bible in the News. On October 31st, 1917 in the third battle of Gaza led by the British General Allenby, the British succeeded in braking through the Turkish defenses at Beersheba. A key engagement in that battle was a bold charge by 500 members of the Light Horse Regiments of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACS), into the Turkish lines in Beersheba. This event was reenacted in Beersheba this past Wednesday with great fanfare. On November 2nd, 1917 the British government issued the Balfour Declaration by way of a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to a British Jewish leader named Lord Walter Rothschild, who was to inform the Zionist Federation.
