IP Telecom, the leading provider of cloud-based voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and unified communications telephony services to business customers across Ireland, today celebrates International Women's Day with a fundraising event in support of the Irish Homeless Street League. The Irish Homeless Street League is a volunteer-driven non-profit organisation that uses the power of sport to transform the lives of people who have found themselves affected by social exclusion. Today's event run by IP Telecom, in celebration of International Women's Day, will be dedicated to raising funds for the organisation and its work. Under the theme, 'Inspire Inclusion', the event will include attendance from charity CEO Christopher O Brien, and womens player Vanessa Lynch, who is due to speak on her experience with the charity. IP Telecom joins the likes of Colin Farrell in its support of the charity, which is currently fundraising towards supporting an Irish entry in this year's Homeless World Cup in Seoul, Korea. At the IHSL, there is a belief 'A Ball Can Change A Life'. Via nationwide leagues, the charity looks to create positive change by motivating, inspiring and developing people who have experienced homelessness, alcohol and substance abuse, or are ex-offenders, long-term unemployed and refugees, delivering positive social change throughout Ireland. Through strategic partnerships and dedicated efforts, the organisation aims to break down barriers and create opportunities for women to rebuild their lives. Many of the female participants have gone back to education, created a career for themselves and also gained a new perspective on life. Speaking at today's event, Shena Brien, CEO of IP Telecom, said: "This International Women's Day, we're not just celebrating - we want to take action. Empowerment and inclusion are core drivers of our business at IP Telecom, as we aim to create an environment that supports women - this ethos goes beyond supporting our own internal team, but how we inspire inclusivity on the outside. Today we're raising funds for the Irish Homeless Street League, which uses the transformative power of sport to create opportunities and instil hope across Ireland - this is a fantastic charity, and I would urge those who can to visit their website and find out more about the work they do." IHSL first launched its campaign to create a league for women In 2016; this started off as one league in Pearse St Dublin, has grown to three leagues nationally, with two in Dublin and further league in Limerick. The organisation's first women's team participated in the Homeless World Cup in Oslo 2017, and have continued to participate in many European tournaments. Most recently the team achieved 4th place at the Homeless World Cup which was held in Sacramento California 2023, the highest ranking ever by an Irish team in the tournament itself. The support of IHSL is not the first time IP Telecom has given encouragement to female sporting organisations. Since 2023 IP Telecom has been the proud lead sponsor of the Women Senior Team of current Women's League of Ireland champions - Peamount United. As the primary sponsor of Peamount United's Women Senior Team, IP Telecom eagerly aims to contribute to the team's success and growth, as well as nurturing the development of women's football within the club, and the country as a whole - empowering the next generation of talented women in sports, business, and technology. IP Telecom, led by CEO and co-founder Shena Brien was founded in 2010, and is based in Dublin West. The company, which offers a full suite of innovative, leading-edge business telephony services and solutions to over 4,000 business customers across a variety of sectors, holds a near 50:50 gender split in its staff. "Ensuring that our staff is balanced, inclusive and more representative of society as a whole is of great personal importance to me. We are committed to inspiring women in all walks of life - be that technology,...
The Homeless World Cup, founded in 2003, today brings unhoused people together in 70 countries to connect through the universal language of football, each year culminating in a World Cup tournament in a different city. Founder and leader Mel Young, and formerly homeless player turned referee Sarah Frohwein talk with host Desire Wanden about why and how the Homeless World Cup was born, spread across the planet, and is bringing dignity and community to those without a home. “How on earth have we created a system that leaves millions of people living on the streets?” asks Young. “It's crazy. We don't have to have it. We sent men to the moon, we invented the internet, and we can fix it. The aim of the Homeless World Cup is not to exist because there will be no homelessness.” www.homelessworldcup.org ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. We hope that this podcast series will show you that, far more than a slogan, “all power to the developing” is a loving activity, a pulsing heart in an all too cruel world. ----more---- The East Side Institute is a hub for a diverse and emergent community of social activists, thought leaders, and practitioners who are reigniting our human abilities to imagine, create and perform beyond ourselves—to develop. When I was High School, Sturm Graz, one of the two teams of my hometown in Austria and the club I was born into, had its most successful phase. We made it to the CL group phase twice - and eventually went bankrupt from it. One of the protagonists was a young, serious-looking player from our own youth system who was known to be not your stereotypical soccer player. We were aware that he had a love for languages and philosophy. During the same period, in 2003, also in Graz, the first Homeless World Cup took place, on the city's main square: 18 nations, 8 homeless players each, streetsoccer style on a small pitch. The tournament, its founders argue, has “The power to transform the lives of participants, and shape attitudes towards homelessness." I would argue it also has the power to recenter the attitudes of soccer fans like us towards the power of the beautiful game. We hear from one of these founders today, Mel Young, a social entrepreneur from Edinburgh, Scotland who is president of the HWC til today. We also hear from that young, serious Sturm Graz player I watched growing up: his name is Gilbert Prilasnig, he now coaches Sturm's under 18, but it turns out he began his coaching career at the Austrian Homeless World Cup national team, already during his active career as a player. He still coaches the HWC team now, making him Austria's longest tenured national team coach. Please leave a quick voicemail with any feedback, corrections, suggestions - or just greetings - HERE. The tagline of Dream (2023, co-written and directed by Lee Byeong-heon) is: You are hopeless, helpless and homeless? No, you are NOT! Dream leans in hard to the classic underdog tropes and is loosely based on the real-life 2010 Homeless World Cup. Maybe you were moved and shed a tear like Megan or perhaps you felt a bit more meh like Amy and Lia. Either way, kick the sports ball plot down the (very small) field and ponder why IU was recording an entire documentary on her hand-held camera. Also, warning, Lia's Mpbs were not scoring any goals either.Sign Up for Our Newsletter!Want our thoughts on why everyone should watch I'm Not a Robot in a 500-word essay? Eric Houghton has been involved with the Homeless World Cup since he was the England captain back in 2003. But it was a chance conversation with one of his mates Dave Morton – who doesn't like football one bit – that led to them launching the Homeless Games. There are huge benefits for each and every homeless person who takes part. A chance to improve their health, both physical and mental. Developing their confidence and pride. Helping them to find new pathways, gaining new skills and accessing much-needed support. Since 2010, The Homeless Games (THG) has hosted the two-day annual Homeless Games in Liverpool, providing ‘Olympic style' games for people who are or have experienced homelessness in last two years with participants coming from across the UK to take part. THG has arranged and organised provision for health and well-being stalls and services including Cancer Awareness, Drink Awareness, Substance Misuse, Sexual Health Advice, Massage, Health Checks, Premier League Health Courses, Dental Advice, Healthy Eating and Dietary Advice were made available to all those who attended the main two day event. These were offered in conjunction with the local area Primary Care Trusts, the local Premier League Football Clubs (Everton Foundation and Liverpool Football Club), Age Concern and Local Authorities. In this episode Toria talks to founder of Empathy Week Ed Kirwan. Ed Kirwan is the CEO, founder and filmmaker at Empathy Week - a global educational programme that uses the power of film to develop students into empathetic leaders, with the aim of building the #EmpathyGeneration. Ed entered the working world through Teach First and taught science in North London for 3 years, including as a Head of Chemistry. Since then he has spent his time filming and using visual storytelling to champion social causes - particularly homelessness and in 2018 went to Mexico for the 2018 Homeless World Cup. In 2019, Ed travelled to India where he worked alongside Slum Soccer to develop a leadership modular course for their young participants. These opportunities led him to create Empathy Week which incorporates the use of powerful films, lesson resources and a ‘Global Empathy Action Challenge' and in 2020 the programme reached schools in 40+ countries across 6 continents and engaged 20,000 students before growing to engage a massive 80,000 students during 2021!A strong believer in a fair education for all, Empathy Week is free to every government and state funded school around the world - every child should have the opportunity to develop the skills of empathy, leadership and resilience. It's not only an essential step to creating a better world but one to help every student be a success in life within and beyond school.Ed is a storyteller. A firm believer in the power of film and an eternal optimist. Film is a tremendous tool and has immense power to inspire, encapsulate and motivate us to believe that we have the ability to change the world - because we truly do. Crucially, it allows us to experience another person's life who we would never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise and allows us to place our own life in a new and more powerful context because of it. This is how Empathy Week aims to move students and teachers into action and towards a world where there is less ignorance and stronger relationships across cultures and borders. With the success in schools, Empathy Week now offers services to businesses and employees at different levels of their careers. Ed believes that to change the world we first have to understand the people in it and that's as important for business as it is for schools. Empathy shouldn't be an add-on. It is crucial to all human interactions, life, performance and wellbeing. To find out more and subscribe go to http:www.empathy-week.com
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development shows that 580,466 people were counted as homeless in 2020, representing a 2.2% increase over 2019. Outside of homelessness 16% of children in the US live below the poverty line (they represent the poorest age group). Of those 73% are children of color. The pandemic has only exacerbated all of this, which is why organizations like Street Soccer USA and people like Reed Fox exist. Street Soccer USA offers a soccer-based life skills program to empower those living in poverty. They have 22 programs across 16 cities, with over 1,000 volunteers and have teams that participate in national championships as well as the annual Homeless World Cup. Reed Fox is a Program Manager within the organization carrying out various key roles including acting as the lead of the Homeless World Cup program for the United States. He's also co-founded Sports Charity Mwanza, an NGO in Tanzania, providing sustainable infrastructure and developing the sports environment in the Mwanza region of Tanzania. Reed, thanks for joining us on the show!

Welcome back to 'All Good in The Sisterhood' with your host Sophie Donald. This week we are joined by Sarah Rhind, a former heroin addict who turned her life around and is now Street Soccer Scotland's Women's Co-ordinator.Haven't heard of Street Soccer? Either had I until I heard this truly inspirational story. After years of battling addiction and two rounds of rehab, it was football that helped Sarah recover and change her life around. Football became the highlight of Sarah's week and led her to play for Scotland in the Homeless World Cup in 2015. Sarah tells us in the episode that 'addiction doesn't discriminate' and throughout her life she had always struggled to be in her own skin. Heroin allowed her that escape and eventually she became dependant on it to function. Football was something she knew she was good at and gave her the confidence to take control of her life. Maybe we already know the benefits of sport, but I hope this story will emphasise the life saving mental benefits of sport and fitness in our lives. You can follow Sarah on Twitter:@SSS_SarahRhindand you can follow Street Soccer Scotland on Instagram:streetsoccerscotlandIf you found this story inspirational (I know you will) then please help me spread the words and tag the podcast on your stories, rate on the itunes app and share with anyone you think would enjoy :)

Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
The world needs more Empathy– but teaching it is not enough Empathy Week 2020 is an invitation for 200,000 young people to put empathy into action and create a better world. Together, we are building the #EmpathyGeneration. Ed Kirwan is an educator, filmmaker and photographer who works to challenge the status quo of social issues and lead people into tangible action. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Bath and worked as a research scientist for a year before he moved into secondary education where he taught science in North London. In the 2 years since, Ed finished a Masters degree in 'Leadership' from UCL:IOE before going on to highlight the issue of homelessness in the UK., educating the general public on ways they can help through powerful visual storytelling. Ed now runs a community that brings homelessness organisations together in the UK, acting as a key networker for the sector and between grassroots organisations and larger national charities. In addition to his work around homelessness, during the past two years, Ed has volunteered and worked in Uganda and India on international development projects and also documented the Homeless World Cup in Mexico in 2018 and Cardiff in 2019. It is ultimately his experiences in the classroom, at the Homeless World Cup and working alongside Slum Soccer in India that led Ed to create Empathy Week 2020. A free secondary school resource, it invites young people to put empathy into action and create a better world by empowering them to make change in their own communities. Ed believes teaching empathy alone is not enough and that students need to be given the freedom, time and space to develop the leadership and empathic skills that are so vital in everyone's career and life. As a dedicated basketball player, he also recognises the importance of sport in character development and has therefore focused on the theme of 'Sporting Change' for this year's Empathy Week. Ed now continues to work on Empathy Week, enabling its impact to spread across the UK as well as continuing to grow his own production company Both Buckets, which has a long term goal of showing that businesses can exist earning a profit whilst 'doing good' at the same time - fulfilling a life of filling both buckets. www.empathy-week.com (https://www.empathy-week.com/) Instagram - @empathyweek Facebook - @empathyweek Twitter - @TheEmpathyWeek Twitter/Instagram/Facebook - @edkirwan Show Sponsor The National Association for Primary Education speaks for young children and all who live and work with them. Gregor sits down with David Duke, Founder and CEO of Street Soccer Scotland and Change Centre. In the early 2000s, David was homeless, living on the streets with an alcohol problem. Whilst traditional business leads with profit, True Business leads with your creative spirit and aligns with your true nature and purpose to build the business you were born for. Which is the perfect place to start today's show. So looking back was it obvious that she was heading towards burnout, and with a bit more knowledge proceeding the event could have stopped it? And why does she see her business flourishing so naturally nowadays, congruent to her spirit or just great PR? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Kat Byles Show Highlights During the show we discussed such deep weighty subjects with Kat Byles such as: Why it is so important to walk the walk and listen to your heart before you ever listen to any external advice. How your body feels so much better when you are working in an environment that is truly suited for you. Kat recalls how her boss was in complete denial as to her burnout (as he was probably suffering himself too) and lastly...... The Homeless World Cup in Oslo came to an end this week, how striking that it should be played out against the backdrop of a record breaking transfer window. We hear from Sophie and David who both found themselves in need of help in their lives and are now on the road to recovery through football, proudly representing Wales! Social went last week. When you win the World Cup... but have to go back to work There was an unexpected side effect to the recent victory of the New Zealand women's rugby team at the World Cup in Ireland. The city of Auckland lost its ability to send one of its detectives under cover. Why? Well when you've just captained the rugby mad nation to another World Cup win there aren't that many people, or criminals, who don't know who you are! By day Fiao'o Fa'amausili is a detective in the Auckland police force, at night she spearheads the finest team in women's rugby. From Old Trafford to New Beginnings Fast cars, flashy jewellery, expensive clothing, sure… but being environmentally friendly isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when you think Premier League footballer. But one man who played at Manchester United alongside Ronaldo, Rooney and Giggs, is trying to prove otherwise. Now retired, Richard Eckersley is the owner of "Earth Food Love" a shop in Devon in the South West of England that is trying to become Britain's only zero waste supermarket. That means none of its 200 products comes with any packaging. So don't forget to bring your own bags, bottles and bowls if you want to buy anything! Todd and Jedd Wider Todd, Jedd and Lori I talk about their new film God Knows Where I Am. We touch on mental health issues, the “other”, the poetic edge to filmmaking and the “ever porous cracks” in our social safety nets. Watch the Trailer here. Synopsis The body of a homeless woman is found in an abandoned New Hampshire farmhouse. Beside the body, lies a diary that documents a journey of starvation and the loss of sanity, but told with poignance, beauty, humour, and spirituality. For nearly four months, Linda Bishop, a prisoner of her own mind, survived on apples and rain water, waiting for God to save her, during one of the coldest winters on record. As her story unfolds from different perspectives, including her own, we learn about our systemic failure to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Biography For over sixteen years, Todd and Jedd Wider have produced numerous critically and commercially successful feature documentary films including the 2012 King’s Point nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short, the multiple Primetime Emmy Awarding winning Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God (2012) directed by Alex Gibney, the Emmy Award nominated Semper Fi: Always Faithful (2011) directed by Rachel Libert and Tony Hardmon, the multiple Emmy Award nominated Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer (2010) directed by Alex Gibney, 2008 Academy Award Winner for Best Documentary and 2009 Emmy Award Winner for Best Documentary, Taxi to the Dark Side (2007) directed by Alex Gibney, the 2008 Sundance favorite Kicking It (2007) broadcast by ESPN, about the Homeless World Cup soccer tournament, the POV film A Dream in Doubt (2007) about the first post 9/11 revenge killing, Morgan Spurlock’s What Would Jesus Buy? Tom from The Scottish Football Blog is this weeks guest. You can follow him on Twitter@ScotFootBlog. Since Tom is a Hibs fan, and considering the recent sacking of Colin Calderwood, we discuss who we see taking over at Easter Road. Laurie brings up the recent goings on at Hearts and we discuss Romanov's recent comments on his position at the club, as well as the recent speculation on a new stadium. Paul Band's charity bet last week was for St Mirren to draw 0-0 with Hearts and he was correct, so we have £45 in the charity pot already. We also cover the weekends SPL games, as well as looking ahead to the Scotland game on Friday. Tom is doing a charity blogathon, in aid of Alzheimer Scotland and the Homeless World Cup, which involves writing one blog an hour over a 24 hour period. Please visit his site and donate to the good causes.
