Avast Ye Harties! Yar! This week be the inaugural episode of a New Streamer/Academic Guru season. Join us as we set sail with a bang and embark on an adventure with the famous and controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Formerly of the Young Turks, Hasan has carved out a niche as a popular left-wing commentator. He is sometimes described as representing a new wave of political communicators who leverage social media and live streaming to reach new audiences, particularly disengaged younger viewers. But how does he fare in these Decoding waters? We take a look at his recent interview with Rashed Al-Haddad, a dashing Yemeni teenager (nicknamed Tim Houthi Chalamet), who recently found himself streaming video on an international transport ship hijacked by Houthi militants. But fear not! Hasan addresses this sensitive topic and the complex geopolitical issues involved with due diligence and care. Moreover, Rashed reports that all of the kidnapped crew are having a grand old time in Yemen! They are simply vibing with their captors, chewing khat, and have fully embraced the honourable Houthi perspective. The Houthis' official slogan, "God is the Greatest, Death to America, Death to Israel, A Curse Upon the Jews, Victory to Islam", and reports of severe human rights abuses in their territory, might still give one pause... but as Hasan explains—drawing on his deep political and psychological insights—the Houthis are just like the heroic Straw Hat pirates in the popular anime One Piece! So with that settled, we can focus on the more important questions like what videogames Rashed likes, if he has ever heard of Mr. Beast, whether he's eaten 'Western' food, what cartoons he watched growing up, and if there are KFCs in Yemen? Truly, this is a conversation for the ages, and Hasan is just the man for the job.So join us for this week's episode as we ponder whether combining influencer culture with political analysis was a wise move and if there are any possible contradictions or minor ideological skews in Hasan's content.Links- Hasan Interviews Viral 'Hot Yemeni TikTok Pirate' | Hasanabi Reacts- Atlantic article about the Houthis and the situation in Yemen- AP article on the crew of the hijacked 'Galaxy Leader' ship and their ability to contact their families- Amnesty article on Houthi sentencing of stoning and crucifixion for crimes of homosexuality- Human Rights Watch article on Houthi recruitment of child soldiers- Human Rights Watch article on the al-Ahli Hospital Explosion- Willy Mac 'drama' YouTuber collated episodes on Hasan (part 1 and part 2)

The double burger becomes Wendy's best seller without changing the price or the size. It is a profit growing lesson for any business. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, word from our sponsor which is... Well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Mothers Brewing Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders podcast. Dave Young, alongside Stephen Semple. And Stephen, you told me we're going to talk about Dave Thomas and Wendy's. And man, that takes me back. I remember when it was like all of a sudden there was this third thing. There was McDonald's and then there was Burger King and then all of a sudden, what the heck? It's a square hamburger. Stephen Semple: It's a square hamburger. Dave Young: It's a square hamburger. Who'd thought of that? Brilliant. Stephen Semple: Dave Thomas, that's who. Dave Young: So where are we going with this? Stephen Semple: Well, before we go into Wendy's, we really need to talk a little bit about Dave Thomas, because Dave Thomas actually had a big impact on another restaurant chain before he started Wendy's. And that was KFC. Dave Young: Oh, okay. Stephen Semple: Dave Thomas, started at KFC and actually owned four franchises at KFC, and they were KFCs most successful franchises. Dave Young: Oh, no kidding. Stephen Semple: Yeah. And look, the man's brilliant. So here's the things that he brought to KFC. He created the whole idea of the standardized menu at KFC. Remember, KFC in the early days was an item that was added to the menu. He was really the first to go, no, there should be this standardized thing where all you serve is Kentucky fried chicken because for many of the franchises it was a product to add on. He was the first to make it a store, make it a thing. Kentucky Fried Chicken was a store. He created the red and white look that we have today. You know those striped banner sort of look on the roof? That was Dave Thomas who created that. You know the bucket which had the chicken and it was a whole meal? Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Dave Thomas invented that. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Best complete idea of a complete meal that you could take home which went on to become a best seller, Dave Thomas created the bucket and that whole concept. The bucket being put on the pie line outside the restaurant, that iconic thing, Dave Thomas came up with that idea. Dave Young: So Colonel Sanders was just basically the chicken and the little outfit in the tie. Stephen Semple: Yeah. And even that, him becoming the spokesperson for it, Dave Thomas' idea. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: Yap. All the stuff that makes KFC KFC, Dave Thomas. Dave Young: Wow. That's amazing. Stephen Semple: Yeah. He was so successful at KFC, when KFC was bought... Because if you remember the Colonel sold KFC, when KFC was bought, the new owners immediately promoted Thomas into head office to help them standardize the brand. And then it's a long story, they then really him off and he quit. So Dave Thomas quits and now he's unemployed, 37 years old with five kids. And he decides to open a burger joint in this, as you said, saturated market because not only was there Burger King and McDonald's, every Tom, Dick, Harry and celebrity had a burger joint. Dave Young: Oh yeah. There's Tasty Freeze, and Tasty King, and Dairy Queen and there were loads of them. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So how do you stand out? Well, one of the first things he looked at was everyone was doing frozen patties,
Across New Zealand there are 267 KFCs and McDonalds Sounds like a lot, right? But according to the Asthma Foundation, it pales in comparison to the number of specialist vape stores that have been springing up around the motu. It says there are now more than 900 vape stores - up almost 300 since the start of the year - and that lots of them are in dairies and near schools. This is the first show I've broadcast in more than a month in which Auckland has been out of the dreaded Alert Level 4.And honestly, I thought this time, things *might* be different. I thought after more a month of sitting at home, more of us in the big city might have taken stock, kicked the habit, and set our aspirations a little higher for the move to Level 3. Aucklanders might have learnt from every one else around the country. A new start. A new dawn. A new opportunity to refresh our routines. But no. We all went to McDonalds and Burger King and Wendy's and Carl's Junior, and KFC, instead.Well, not all of us. I'm not trying to be all high and mighty but I haven't had any of that Worldwide-franchisey-plastic-additivesy-supersize-me shit in almost fifteen years and I'll be damned if a move to Level 3 was going to convince me to spend half an hour with an idling engine waiting for some chicken nuggets in a drive-through queue. What's wrong with people? On Wednesday I could see queues down the street for my closest franchise. Addicts waiting for a fix! Honestly, big brand fast food franchise marketing has to be one of the greatest media swindles of all time. Because in case you haven't noticed, the food's really not that good. It's ok I guess. A bit of sugar, salt, and saturated fat plus however many hundred additives. Call me old fashioned but I prefer my food to be prepared with ingredients, not random numbers. And before you accuse me of elitism, know this: I'm not a vegan. I'm not a health nut. I eat sugar and salt and saturated fat. But if I'm going to enjoy some takeaways as a bit of a treat, I'd much rather spend my money on a roti canai at the Malaysian hole-in-the-wall down the road, or on a scoop and a piece of cod at the local fish and chip shop. Independent small businesses need all the help they can get right now.I know we love to joke about it. Haha! Two guys got caught trying to smuggle buckets of K-Fry over the Auckland border. Hilarious. I just think sometimes the fixation is a bit... lame. Apparently health officials have been considering setting up a vaccination system at KFCs, Piza Huts, and Taco Bells. Part of me thinks it's smart. Part of me thinks it's funny. Part of me thinks it's pretty sad state that there are apparently people in our society who would rather get a Cheesy Gordita Crunch than a vaccination for a deadly virus.I saw Population Nutrition Professor Boyd Swinburn on Breakfast this week, lamenting the fast food ‘culture of craving' that has dominated Covid-19. I totally agree with him. It's a conversation our society don't really want to have and you shouldn't need me to make this point: If you think Covid-19 puts pressure on our health system, just wait until you hear about bad nutrition! There are plenty of reasons I hope we never go back to Level Four. Plenty. Top of the list: I'm sick of people treating a quarter pack or a McChicken combo like a sweet sip of water after a long march through the desert.

Grand total: 33 victims Craig Bowley- corresponded with Gacy while he was in prison. Robert Ressler: FBI profiler who worked the Behavior Science Unit in the FBI. He went with Bowley to interview Gacy on May 4, 1992. News anchor Jay Levine- ABC 7 He got a tip in December 1978 to head to 8213 W. Summerdale Avenue for a major story. Robert Piest was Gacy's downfall: Piest was 15 and working at a Nisson Pharmacy in Des Plains. His mother came to pick him up, and Piest came out to say he wanted to talk to a contractor about a possible job. She said she would wait for him, and he never came back. They launched a full-scale search for him immediately. This kid was unlike Gacy's other victims. Piest shared a close relationship with his family and was not one to just disappear. Gacy's business: P.D.M Contractors. He remodeled pharmacies and hired teenagers to do the work. Former employees described Gacy as easygoing and kind. May 1978- Gacy organizes a Polish parade and has his picture taken with First Lady Rosalynn Carter. He had Secret Service clearance. As police search for Piest, they put Gacy under surveillance. Gacy got chummy with the cops and started eating with them at restaurants. The detectives reported he would sometimes invite them in to use his restroom. Gacy was very arrogant. He invited them to dinner at his house. In Gacy's bathroom, Bob Shell smelled the distinct odor of death when the heat kicked on. This gives them probable cause to get a search warrant. They find bodies in the crawl space of Gacy's home. Episode 2 The episode starts with Gacy talking about having fun being a clown. He called it a “release.” Clowning helped him relax. Gacy's time in Iowa: First wife's father owned several KFCs. John took over 3 restaurants. Waterloo Jr. Chamber of Commerce: the Jaycees- Gacy was a member and the Chaplain. Gacy was a recruiter for the Jaycees. Gacy claims they showed “Stag” films to boost membership from 100 to 400 members. John and his first wife were swingers. 1968- John is arrested for sodomy in Waterloo. 16 y/o son of a state representative goes to the police and says Gacy coerced him into committing a sex act. At the time, Gacy was running for president of the Jaycees. Gacy claimed the boy was blackmailing him for money, and when Gacy refused, he went to the police and said Gacy raped him. Gacy hired another man to beat up the complainant. He eventually pleaded guilty to the sodomy charge and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Anamosa Men's Reformery. Gacy recruited for the reformatory Jaycees in prison. Gacy's father was an abusive alcoholic. Gacy's sister said John was the usual target of their father's rage. The father thought the mother coddled John, and called him names and beat him. John Gacy was paroled 1.5 years into his sentence. He married his second wife, Carol, who was a friend of his sister's, in the early 70s. According to her, she knew he was a bi-sexual when they got married. He went to college, got married, joined a local Jaycee club and was managing KFCs. He eventually started his own business called PDM, but only hired boys and young men to work for him. So for today's episode, we are going to take a look at two equally iconic KFCs — Kentucky fried chicken and Korean fried chicken. How are they made? How did they influence each other? And we are looking further than that — to the Korean war, the first cookbook…

Restaurant veteran Gary Zancanelli joins Smart Companies host Kelly Scanlon to discuss his entrepreneurial rise through the restaurant industry. Starting as a cook and busboy working in the family restaurant, Zancanelli went on to build a group of 70 KFC restaurants, including all the KFCs in the Kansas City area. After selling them to a private equity group in 2011, Zancanelli introduced the Red Door Woodfired Grill in April 2013 in Leawood, Kan. Find out the behind-the-scenes story that inspired Zancanelli to create the Red Door Grill concept, what he and his business partner Mark Kirke are doing to build a brand around the "upscale neighborhood joint" concept, how they've expanded the concept and what he future holds. When I first met Bruce Friedrich, he was running PETA's awareness campaigns. Yeah, those campaigns — the ones where naked people stuffed themselves in saran wrap and cages, and where wounded chickens limped outside KFCs.He was also one of the smartest, most informed, and most thoughtful experts I'd found on animal suffering. He had immersed himself in a subject most of us — myself very much included — would prefer to ignore, and he had learned some surprising things, including that vegetarianism was probably worse for animal welfare than cutting out eggs but keeping beef.Since then, Friedrich has become director of the Good Food Institute, as well as a founding partner in New Crop Capital, an investment fund that backs companies creating alternatives to animal-based protein. In this podcast, we talk at length about:- Why you can't trust the humane labels on eggs- Friedrich's path to becoming a food-tech investor- Why Bill Gates and the Google founders are investing in lab-grown meat- How the market for plant-based proteins has changed- Why the all-or-nothing frame around vegetarianism is counterproductive- Why eating eggs is much worse for animal suffering than eating beef- Whether we can really solve global warming without looking at our food choicesAnd, of course, much more. This was, for me, a fascinating conversation that is already changing the way I eat. I hope it does the same for you. This episode is brought to you by The Great Courses Plus.
