In late February 2023, 37-year-old Nicholas Downey rented a car in Florida to visit his wife in Mississippi. While he made it there safely, the visit was brief, as Nick needed to return to Florida and drop off the rental car. During his drive home, he spoke to his wife one last time. After that call, he vanished without a trace.Nick's disappearance wasn't immediately noticed until his wife tried to call him again the following morning. Her calls went unanswered. Eventually, someone did pick up, but it wasn't Nick; it was a deputy from the Liberty County Sheriff's Office. The officer explained that Nick's rental car had been found abandoned on a remote property in Liberty County, Florida, and Nick was nowhere to be found. In fact, there wasn't even a footprint left in the sand to follow. A K-9 tracking team was brought in to search the area but found nothing: no tracks, no personal belongings, and no signs of a struggle. Even more perplexing, the car was discovered far off any logical route Nick would have taken to return the vehicle. These circumstances have left both his loved ones and investigators searching for answers.The case has become so puzzling that some law enforcement officials have half-jokingly suggested, though with a hint of discomfort, that the only remaining explanation might be something out of this world. Donald Lee Hassler, a Texas parolee, has been charged with capital murder in the mysterious disappearance and suspected murder of 57-year-old Sheryl Siddall. Siddall, a grandmother residing in Horseshoe Lake Estates in north Liberty County, northeast of Houston, vanished without a trace on September 18, leaving authorities and her distraught family searching for answers. The ordeal began when Siddall's concerned niece reported her missing, triggering a welfare check at her home. What deputies discovered inside Siddall's residence only deepened the sense of dread—a trail of blood on the kitchen floor and cabinets. Despite a thorough search in the community and the lake behind her house, Siddall has not been found. When deputies arrived at Siddall's home, Hassler, an acquaintance of Siddall's answered the door. His assertion that Siddall had left to visit her sister in Oklahoma and that he was in the process of buying her house raised immediate suspicions. Authorities, however, found Siddall's belongings—wallet, purse, ID, and vehicle—inside her home, contradicting Hassler's claims. Complicating matters, Siddall's phone, which last pinged a cellphone tower near her residence on September 11 before going silent, has yet to be located. Hassler, who was initially booked into the Liberty County Jail on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm—a parole violation—remained at the center of the investigation. As the case unfolded, investigators discovered eight firearms in a box trailer belonging to Hassler and in his pickup truck. The additional charges intensified the severity of the situation, marking Hassler as the prime suspect in Siddall's disappearance. Following his arrest, Hassler's lack of cooperation with authorities became apparent. Deputies stated that he pleaded the Fifth Amendment against self- incrimination, heightening suspicions surrounding his involvement. Hassler was subsequently held without bond, a decision made as the search for Siddall continued. Unfortunately, a date for the resumption of the search was not immediately available. This week's episode of Parsing Immigration Policy covers the impact of immigration on the American education system. Two experts from the Center for Immigration Studies join us to discuss this issue. Steven Camarota, Director of Research, talks about the impact of both legal and illegal immigration on public schools throughout the United States, which was the subject of a recent report that provides a visual representation of the impact on the education system in each community. Todd Bensman, Senior National Security Fellow, focuses on how a recent influx of illegal immigration has affected one specific community outside Houston, Texas.The findings in Camarota's report show that students from immigrant households account for an enormous share of public school students in many areas. Moreover, a larger share of students from immigrant households come from low-income families and speak a foreign language at home, creating significant challenges, often in areas already struggling to educate students from disadvantaged backgrounds.Bensman examins the effect of immigration on public schools in Liberty County, Texas, about 40 miles north of Houston. In just the last five years, tens of thousands of illegal-immigrant families with school-age children have taken up residence in the county..
